Good morning. Enjoying the set. I was staring out the window at the top of a building under construction against the blue blue blue sky for Up, Up and Away and that felt correct
Avatar 9:15am Joe McG:

In my view, Dom should've claimed composer credit on this version of "Spinning Wheel." All but unrecognizable!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Handy Haversack:

Nice, Phillippe. I kept the sparrows, mourning doves, and juncos in seed through this last snow. Hardly seems worth hanging the other feeders back up since we're just getting snow every other day for the next ten days, it looks like.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Rich in Washington:

That's hilarious! I was just thinking about this very cover of Caravan! I had recently ripped this LP from my father's collection so he could listen to it on his tablet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Handy Haversack:

steveo, I haven't paid the snow bill all winter, but they won't seem to cut off the service no matter what I do.

We were going to go a little ways upstate next week but now think we might have to call it off. Our car is not one that handles snow very well. It's ... vastly disappointing ...
Avatar 9:24am Joe McG:

Glad you guys are enjoying some Monday morning geetar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy no doves yet this winter here. Lotsa different kinds of waterfowl, though, at least 10 different kinds
Good to hear steveo. As someone who spends his time on the board talking about birds, good to hear he won't be clamping down on the non-music talk. Speaking of which, great set so far, Joe!
Avatar 9:25am βrian:

We $prang for winter tires last year. The difference was dramatic.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am steveo:

@handy We've got a subaru rental scheduled to head out to past where Joe is from for a couple of days next week... i hope there's not too much snow to hike a little...

@Phillippe, I'll be a little surprised if -Ken mentions birds tonight
Avatar 9:28am Joe McG:

Wait a second, who let this piano player in here. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am steveo:

this guitar sounds like a piano
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Handy Haversack:

βrian, one sad thing is that this is the first winter of any even mild severity (it's a thing!) we have had in years. If we had been getting a bunch of snow *last* Jan. and Feb.? Hurray! But this year, when we actually want to try to go sit *somewhere else* sometimes, it's ... punishing. We're already at more snow than at least since 2016, if not 2010.

steveo, we have a 2003 Corolla. It barely likes rain!

that is a nice thing about not owning a car; you get to rent new ones. (but i know kate needs for work)
Avatar 9:32am βrian:

How many inches total have you gotten? About 14 years ago, we got 101 inches. Not so crazy this year.
Avatar 9:33am βrian:

@steveo: In our household we had beaters for years. If we wanted to travel to visit family, we always rented.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Handy Haversack:

Maybe 30-40" in the city total, with some melting in between. A lot more out in Jersey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Phillippe Bastille:

@steveo (wipes brow)
My beater truck pretty much died back in November -- sucking antifreeze into the engine, but it has a quarter million miles on it so I can't complain. My bride has decided that we can get by on one car. Only problem is her car is relatively new and has such a small trunk that we have to buckle the costco-sized paper towels into the back seat. Not gonna fly in the spring when we need about 20 bags of mulch... Plus being in the 'burbs, we'll totally lose our "divide and conquer" approach to running errands on the weekend.
  9:36am Will:

Well this is amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am steveo:

Phillippe, maybe a trailer?
Avatar 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Phillippe Bastille:

It's pretty low-slung, so I don't think a hitch would be much help, steveo. Delivery is a good option though.
  9:42am Alice:

Joe! This is a perfect playlist for working this morning. Thank you :)

great first set, I enjoyed all the tones

i've had my eye on a particular bike trailer for years, but haven't pulled the trigger

steveo, our granny cart busted a wheel coming back from the pet-food store a couple of months back, and if we have yet to replace it. Hard times.

Ah! Woke up in the middle of the night so am able to hear this show -- when I heard Tom Jones as a beatnik poet the other day I almost fell off of my chair! Wondered what you thought Joe! *L*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am steveo:

yeah, Handy, that's what happened to ours; sorta sucked pushing a 3-wheeled granny cart half a mile with 100 lbs of groceries
Avatar 9:51am Joe McG:

@Miss G: Thanks for the head's up on this new album!
  9:51am Brendan:

After hearing Buddy Fite , It would be cool to hear Buddy Love (from the original soundtrack). After all, he’s a lover not a fighter, but he’s also a fighter so don’t try anything funny. Nutty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Handy Haversack:

I feel like I should be standing on Zanzibar or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am PaulRobeson1920:

@Ken From Hyde Park- I imagine Anthracite coal mined in Wales and Pennsylvania powering that steamer! BABY

I love walking the shore at Jones Beach State Park and finding old pieces coal that had been drifting on the waves for years. Sometimes they washed up at the beach after a big storm. Always groovy to find a shiny piece of anthracite in the sand

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Hughie Considine:

Meanwhile, the Boss is losing some long-time fans after that Jeep ad. Apparently Little Early Burly came by in his curly-wurly and tried to run him over.
Avatar 9:57am Joe McG:

@Hughie: Wow, the Boss did a car ad?
  9:58am Niko, Copenhagen:

Hello to Joe and listeners. From snowy Denmark!
Avatar 9:58am waters7:

Love this version of Under Pressure. Really difficult to do this. Also--Tom Jones! Still relevant. Boyo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Hughie Considine:

Well, it was more like a solemn benediction for all of us to meet in the middle (the literal middle) in the guise of a Jeep ad. It strains credulity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Rich in Washington:

As a Washingtonian, I am legally obligated to point out that Willie was a radio DJ in Vancouver Washington in the 1950s anytime his name comes up.

@Pasc: Tom's new LP looks promising, mostly cover tunes, but interesting ones! Glad he's recording again after losing his wife.
  10:05am Rick A:

WFMU's own Dennis Diken played drums on that Nancy Sinatra album though I don't know if he played on that song. The album features a musical cast of a thousand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Handy Haversack:

Wow, this set is star-studded -- both the artists and the clicky variety. Fantastic, Joe!
Avatar 10:07am Joe McG:

@Rick: Yes, that track was recorded in Hoboken mostly!

@ Joe, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry was never on tv for like 20 years and now there is a cable channel that shows it every other day. I am ruining it for myself, but I love everything about that movie. Brian, well, The Country Sect came out in 1965, so that's pretty early. I interviewed Don Crane some years ago, and Gram Parsons told him that he acknowledged the Sect as the first. Whether there are earlier examples in the musical fossil record, I don't know.

@ nardo, great movie. Great music. My theory regarding Peter Fonda is that he actually directed Easy Rider because Hopper was stoned all the time. Hopper took the credit though and thats why Hpper and Fonda were not friends later in life. I believe this because Fonda continued to direct good movies and Hopper while an awsome actor, never directed another good movie

Joe, you have been really living in the 70s lately between WKRP, White Line Fever and Dirty Mary... My babysitter had a big crush on Jan-Michael Vincent. I agree regarding seeing movies in a cinema. Before the pandemic, the NYC film revival seen was really exploding, featuring a wide array of independent retrospective houses. I felt very privileged and was rigid about avoiding films on the small screen. However, the pandemic broke me. I will happily return to the cinema to see old movies when we can do that. However, now Turner Classic Movies has been my go to given our old school cable package. I saw Battleship Potemkin last night. I just hope those independent theaters will survive these trying times.

I saw a band years ago called Naan Violence. They would fit in with this set.

I don't miss movie theaters so much (because rude people) but do wish i had TCM or that other quality film streaming service. Criterion Channel is gone i think.
I settle for Youtube movies or cheap DVDs. (A Better Tomorrow was the latest). The Dig on Netflix was quite good.
