Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug.
Is this the penultimate show for Mr A? If so, WHY no more after next week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
We have one more monthly installment planned for February. Six shows seemed like a good chunk to arrange for at the start, with a break for WFMU's fundraiser in March (though Chris and Matsuli Music will have a presence on my show during the marathon—more to come on that). The possibilities of more happening after February are wiiiide open.
  8:59am Really Lisa:

Please to see ya, Ramblin' Ray!

@Funky16Corners
Someone in the control booth had the good sense to cut the vocal mics on this gem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am listener Rey:

Helllo Drummer-somers. I like this Hadnott record a lot but I'm really curious about the B-side.

Avatar 9:50am Listener Gregory:

Unexpected celeste appearance. We should have been warned!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

@listener Rey
I just made a last minute change to the flip side of that Billy Hadnott number. Seems "Junk Wagon" was release with two different flip sides.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
My apologies. I will always alert you to upcoming glöckenspiels.

King Perry was the Dr. Fauci of his day. Or maybe it's the other way around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

"Socks" here has maybe a different meaning than you may realize. This was Ongala's huge AIDS anthem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am doctorjazz:

Fauci seems like he won the lottery these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Pedro in Arlington
I loved Dr. Fauci's early releases. Before he sold out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Brian in UK:

doctorjazz, unlimited button-down collar shirts for Dr. F.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

All kidding aside. Dr. Fauci was a hero of the AIDS era, as he is a hero of today.

What is the meaning of "socks" here, then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am sinner:

They keep your feet warm.

@Jeff, your mind is 20 seconds dirtier than mine, because I had the same question, a little later.

@Jeff Golick
See late-'80s rap references to "Jimmy Hat."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

A friend we've met via the local dog run is a photographer and took a portrait of Fauci for, I think, Time magazine. She said he was super nice and charming and told her to call him Tony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of warm, welcome brother sinner!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Brian in UK:

Chris what is the general standard for recording equipment, over here people went mad for umpteen tracks in the past. These sounds are just right I cannot imagine there are huge banks of equipment needed to produce them..
Avatar 10:43am Chris Albertyn:

Deep question Brian, you make my bit rate flutter ... those days it can't have been much - simple and upfront
Avatar 10:45am Chris Albertyn:

@Brian this book gives first hand account of these recording sessions www.amazon.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Brian in UK:

I have never spent much money on listening stuff as most of the music I have would not warrant it. That said, live music is the acid test.
Thanks for the link.

Almost sounds like a New Orleans brass band alongside the Ramblers here. What an amazing sound.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, spodiodi!

Jonas is 19 here on this track. He co-wrote this number with Hugh Masekela and drummer George Makhene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Rob Weisberg:

Thanks Chris - I strongly second what Irene said! And thanks Doug - sad to hear the news about Jonas Gwangwa but thank you for the musical appreciation - nobody could do that better than you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

So many all-time South Africa jazz giants there with the Jazz Dazzlers: Kippie Moeketsi, Mackay Davashe, Hugh Masekela, Gwigwi Mrwebi, Sol Klaaste...
Incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Diepkloof was a neighborhood in Soweto. This song title translates to something like At Home in Diepkloof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Monk's records made it to SA, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

As with "Fuduwa," this cut, "Carol's Drive" is a Jonas Gwangwa composition.

Listen for this iconic trombone sound underpinning this stuff. Classic bebop, with a twist.

@Jeff Golick
You betcha.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
The Jazz Epistles featured Dollar Brand at the ivories. He was (is) a known Ellington and Monk adorer. (Aren't we all.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

All-time genius of S.A. jazz alto saxist Kippie Moeketsi has been ever-present on the tracks so far.
Avatar 11:25am Listener Gregory:

John Mehegan and his et al. are doing pretty well here; no clue that this is an African group.

Poor al!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

This track is often misspelled "MRA." It is "Mra," which was the nickname for saxist Christopher Columbus Ncgukana. This track is often credited to Masekela. It was written by Dudu Pukwana.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am spodiodi:

The debut recording from Letta Mbulu!!!! Jonas, on trombone, is the composer.

I'm so late. But I survived a 3 hour one-on-one video call with one of my many bosses.
You know what's worse than a zoom call? A Microsoft Teams call that crashes at times
Avatar 11:38am Lewis:

@fred - I think 3hours is cruel, but perhaps not as unusual as it should be... Welcome!

Lyrics to "Sasol":

Leave them alone, we shall get them, we shall revenge
In the evenings, in the dark
They spending sleepless nights because of "umkhonto we sizwe"
They have no peace of mind because mkonto will exterminate them
They have no place to hide, because we are everywhere
This "mkonto we sizwe", we of "mkonto we sizwe"
Everybody knows about mkhonto, wherever they go
They spend sleepless nights because of Sasolberg
Vorster is ill as I am talking to you now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am fred:

@Doug: Was "Crashing Teams" considered as a band name in your high school days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Umkhonto we Sizwe were the armed freedom fighters of the ANC.
Avatar 11:43am TDK60:

Got to see The Specials a few years ago. Fun.

This killer Jonas Gwangwa disc from 1969 was produced by.... Ahmad Jamal!!!

I had very much wanted to play "Switch #2" from that same LP. Just more KILLER groove. Unmistakably Dudu Pukwana on sax.
