I patiently await the hiss, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 11:52am Tony Coulter:

Look carefully at the lineup of cassettes to your left. Can you tell us which one grabbed your handbag and ran?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 11:53am listener james from westwood:

music! mayhem! oxide! live and direct to your door!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 11:53am Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael!

i think it was the guy on the left. i recognize his sour expression.

Hula Hi Hola, Listener James!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:00pm DCE:

Tony! howaya?

Second Tape Hiss in a row where I recognize at least one of the bands, w00h00! (Vox Populi)
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, NGH! I'm playing the hits, I am.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Couldn't decide whether to include the exclamation point, which technically is part of Vox Pop's name (# + !, actually). Decided to live it up.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:13pm !:

Good call, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:14pm Guido (Cologne):

Hi Tony!
Just stumbled in.
Vox Populi is the only familiar name here.
I remember I had the one or the other track on some Swiss or Belgian compilation.
Seeing their story going back as far as 1982 is new to me.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Doug ! Doug !
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Guido! This is Vox Populi's first release.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:15pm listener james from westwood:

digging the vox thus far!!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

The Populi are glad.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:18pm Rich in Washington:

Dangblasted internets are up and down constantly here at work. Don't know how much I'll be able to listen.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Dagnabit! Greetings anyway, Rich!
  Tue. 2/4/14 12:20pm ?:

called tape wank this bit!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

The wank will get proggier later on, which may make you happier, Sir ?
  Tue. 2/4/14 12:24pm ?:

how do you know what I like?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Maybe you're not the you I think you are. You could be another you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 12:26pm Carmichael:

He could be a lot like him, you doesn't like what the other likes. Like, wow ....
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:27pm DCE:

?, don't ? Tony's knowledge. It's a losing proposition.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:28pm Rich in Washington:

Be Your Own You was an unsuccessful children's LP and book.
  Tue. 2/4/14 12:28pm ?:

I am that You and you should know better! But you are right - You is my favourite Gong album, after all you are what you is!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:28pm Guido (Cologne):

For those who don't know it yet, here the page of my old pal Don Campau, mostly dedicated to the cassette-culture (Cassette-Underground Archive): livingarchive.doncampau.com

Don does regular DIY-only radio-shows in Silicon Valley since … mid 80ies or something.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Some Christmas music for you now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 12:29pm pacific standard simon:

Hi, Tony. I'm a happy feller this morning -- finally found my homemade Hawkwind CD! Space party at work this afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 12:31pm pacific standard simon:

These guys sure were on the same page with early Negativland, eh?
  Tue. 2/4/14 12:31pm ?:

Striped Bananas, Nad Neslo, Sons Of Hippies, Robert Ziino, etc.
Really Guido I have never heard of any of the bands your mate Don C. played this year on the radio.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

@ Guido: Thanks for link. Don's Living Archive site is really great. I have one little mini-feature on there (on the Illusion Production label).
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, P.S. Simon!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

@ Guido : Thanks for "the link," I mean.
  Tue. 2/4/14 12:39pm ?:

talking about great alternative radio shows there a really good WFMU Nat Roe show from (Playlist) June 12, 2010 in the archives where he plays nothing but Four hours straight of Bizarro German Musik, mostly from the early 80s.
The Acid Dreams , Brain Ink, Human Puppets etc.
I seriously recommend it!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:50pm Guido (Cologne):

Brain Ink were Dutch with a British mastermind!

... ah Tony, I see you are contributung as an author and veteran CJ!

I have my little "early experience" article there:
livingarchive.doncampau.com...
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

Ah nice -- I will be sure to read your piece after the show. Thanks!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, that capstan noise you're hearing on side B of this tape is actually *in* the recording -- probably developed some point during their dubbing of the release. One of the perils of no-budget self-releases, I guess.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

Hey! Who invited Herman's Hermits!?! (Damn autofill)
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:01pm northguineahills:

I like Nat Roe's selection of music, but he uses the same darn filter effects when mixing, which sometimes gets old to me after a few years....
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:03pm Guido (Cologne):

Pretty sophisticated stuff!
we should never forget the technical conditions!
No samplers, just tapes, maybe a lot of self build electronics.
A lot of work to do this!!!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

True, for sure. And, somehow, when things are harder to do, they often turn out better.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:07pm Rich in Washington:

Mr. Fab at Music for Maniacs made to proposition that Bandcamp is the new Cassette Revolution.
I must say I have probably purchased more music on Bandcamp than any other electronic means. The sliding scale on most offerenings is really enticing although I often feel compelled to give more than the suggested price.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:09pm listener james from westwood:

already really liking the trio. evidently you've got my frequency tagged this tape hiss!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

The new Cassette Revolution, perhaps, but without all the beautiful, highly individual packaging.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

The above was aimed at Rich, natch.

Glad you like the trio, James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 1:10pm Uncle Michael:

I want the video game that this is the music for.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

Pierre Bastien is only credited with playing bass & guitar -- but his Meccano contraptions are in there too, methinks.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

that's a lot of farts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

cantata for tuned armpits
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:26pm Doug Schulkind:

I am enjoying quite a lot.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

I once gave a copy of this cassette (of which only 300 were made) as a birthday gift to an FMU DJ. Looking back, I now realize it wasn't the perfect fit. Should have given it to Doug.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:30pm listener james from westwood:

was it nachum?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! No -- but maybe only a little bit less of a mismatch. It was Irene.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

Would be great if she'd actually been listening to the stream just now! "Hm, that sounds familiar...."
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:36pm Doug Schulkind:

♬Happy Birthday to Me♬Happy Birthday to Me♬
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Don't worry: I have a Menudo remixes CD lined up for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Ah, World Music...
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

Funny you mention that. One of my oldest record-store tricks is looking in the world music sections. All sorts of stuff gets stuck there, just because stores don't know how else to file it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/4/14 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

My workplace is closing for the weather...45 minutes into my work day.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Lucky you. Have fun throwing snowballs.
  Tue. 2/4/14 1:46pm Dean:

My response to "world music": What? Verdi wasn't of the world?

Same experience, even at record stores that should know better: the WM section serves as the miscellany drop.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:46pm Guido (Cologne):

I often get a lough when our Cologne Carnival Schlager Singers get filed under "Word" at AMG. Allright, Cologne is part of the world, why not?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:04pm Rich in Washington:

At least one store in Portland has a "I don't know where to put this" section that's both an honest assessment of what's to be found there and worth looking through at least once a month.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

blows my mind that this music was burbling out there somewhere while i was stuck marinating in whitney houston or other pop slop in the nyc radio market. would be 6 more years before i was turned on to wfmu....
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

One could make a flow chart that would get from Whitney Houston to this. Starting with the fact that Whitney covered a Soft Machine track (Hugh Hopper's "Memories").
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:11pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony! Awesome stuff. Gotta run! Ciao!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Ah -- lyrics in Latin! I should do an all-Latin show one of these days.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

Ciao, NGH!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:13pm Rich in Washington:

Whoa! Memories was a Soft Machine track? I had no idea! Isn't that the Material crew on Whitney's version?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yep!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:14pm Rich in Washington:

Whitney's death marks the THIRD time a complete stranger felt compelled to inform us that a celebrity had died on our date night.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:15pm Rich in Washington:

Some clueless douchebag announced to to everyone within earshot in an Indian restaurant after he read it on his smartphone.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:17pm listener james from westwood:

the first thing i do when i am at an indian restaurant is to put my phone in stasis. nothing gets between me and indian food.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

Appropriately, the next track is called "Indian Holiday."
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:21pm Rich in Washington:

I hear you James. I have this thing about ever getting on them in restaurants if I am with anyone anyway. My wife and I see couples who hardly talk to one another or even whole families diddling with their phones instead of talking.
  Tue. 2/4/14 2:21pm Dean:

I'll bite, Rich. Whose deaths were the occasions of the first two?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

I'll guess one of them: Ernest Borgnine.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:23pm listener james from westwood:

that's tragic, esp. considering how little together time some families have aside from meals, if those.
i watched a high school kid walk straight by an attractive peer with his eyes fixed only on his cell. at that rate the species will peter out in 30 years.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:24pm Rich in Washington:

Tony: NO! But I passed up the opportunity to meet Ernest just before he died. A friend was sort of responsible for his portland appearance at the screening of Marty.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

er -- *this* is "Indian Holiday" -- my goof.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, I think they have the "other" Indians in mind.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

Dean: One was Lady Di. I believe it was one of our first dates. The waitress deemed it appropriate to go to each table and in a hushed tone, tell all of us that she had been killed.
The other was more recent. While out buying wine after our date, a clueless clerk hopped up to us and in an excited voice asked "did you hear about the famous actor who died?" . I was thinking it was a setup for a joke, so I repeated it back to him as such.
He told me his name and I didn't recognize it. He said he was in the Fast and Furious series and I told him I have never seen any of them, had no plans to ever see any of them and then he thought I was joking.
My wife and I were just sad that there are so many stupid people in the world.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:32pm listener james from westwood:

heard about diana when i was in LA. the TV coverage after that point was, as you can imagine in that town, wall to wall.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

Celebrity death news is still preferable to sports talk -- for me anyhow. (Go away Seahawks.)
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:39pm Tony Coulter:

(Please ignore my previous remark, sports fans.)
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

The Seahawks victory just gave my neighbors one more reason to shoot their guns in the air all night.
  Tue. 2/4/14 2:45pm Dean:

Rich: Diana went before cellphones, never mind smartphones, achieved prevalence. At least there's that, the personal touch from the waitress. But I can't fathom the restaurant's sense that keeping its customers apprised of the news, short of a real, proximate emergency, was its obligation.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:48pm listener james from westwood:

a greek joint up the street form me has tvs tuned to the local news channel on every wall. they're silent, fortunately, but you can still read the crawl. i guess i can be happy they're not on fox.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:50pm Rich in Washington:

I can tell you, it absolutely ruined our date. It was one of our first, shortly before becoming engaged. Not that we cared that much but my wife was rather fond of Diana and somewhat intrigued by the British Royalty thing.
But it was just, why the fuck go and tell people? It was stupid.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:50pm Guido (Cologne):

Top-Notch tape stuff in this show I must say!
I think Remo Tobs are my favourite for today.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Guido! The Nine Tobs LP is really good too. (It's called "Gruffy Splurge.")
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:53pm Rich in Washington:

Dean: There were indeed cellphones in '97, just nowhere near as prevalent in recent years. We just didn't have any yet, my wife and I. We begrudgingly bought them when our children became of driving age, etc...
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:55pm Rich in Washington:

Tony: This is amazing!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you like it, Rich! The vocalist has a bit of David Thomas going on, no?
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 2:58pm Tony Coulter:

NB: I will be going a couple of minutes over today, in order to finish this cassette.
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 3:01pm Tony Coulter:

And remember to stay tuned for Doug (at 6:00) and Jesse (at 7:00).
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

amazing show today, tony. lucky to have caught it!
Avatar Tue. 2/4/14 3:04pm Tony Coulter:

See you next week, everybody! Thanks for showing up!
