There's an episode of the show Superstore in which the Wal-Mart like chain requires all employees to sign on to an inhouse social media app. One of them brings up some points one might hear on this show about surveillance and is shut down for being paranoid, until they realize the app is monitoring their break times.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm listener james from westwood:

I am living right down the street from the '80s arcade where I used to play in the day, and they indeed had a Tron console that pulled my quarters. (And fuck yeah for the start tune!!)

  6:43pm David in London:

The tank battle game was called Battle Zone here in the UK, and I felt as excited by it as you describe Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU goes Twitch.
  6:44pm Ed Flynn:

That Tron game stole more quarters from me than Missile Command and Galaga by far.

That was fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Handy Haversack:

Tron. Life. Whatsa matter with our world?!

Lovely piece, Mark!
  6:45pm ignatatus666:

Mark I loved the game Tron at the video arcade there was another game not really similar but it was monochrome it was called Omega Man just wondering if you remember that or have any knowledge of that game
  6:45pm Dave Miss:

Tron was a great game.

Wasn't it COMBAT on the Atari 2600, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Oh yeah - Battlezone was cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Webhamster Henry:

Shout out to the WFMU Asteroids console.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm listener james from westwood:

Yes indeed, Handy! Came with the system IIRC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Gen Xers represent! I spent a lot of time and many quarters in the arcade near the Ledgewood Circle in northern NJ, and in various arcades down the shore. Oh, and I played the race-car game, Pole Position, at the Rockaway Roller Rink. All that said, I prefer pinball.
  6:47pm Dean:

Never got into arcade games, but I do remember playing an elaborate board game involving interstellar travel and colonization. The rules prescribed a multi-dimensional play space with a bunch of chits. Roughly contemporary with Dungeons & Dragons. Anybody have an idea what this would have been called? We're talking '70s here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm mecha maiko:

Greetings, folks! Mark, great bit on Tron. Pinball PA is one of the best arcades I've ever been to in the states and unfortunately they are closing down/selling off a bunch of their machines. If any of you are in the market for some vintage cabinet games... check em out.

  6:48pm cosmic matrix:

No, besides being entertaining, this program does fulfill a noble public service. A lot of truth here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm mecha maiko:

Oh wait. Maybe they aren't closing after all! Still worth a visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Handy Haversack:

Dean: Traveller? That was the main SF RPG of the nerdier ends of RPG life. Or maybe the first edition of Twilight Imperium if it was more boardgamey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm listener james from westwood:

The Willowbrook Mall had the Aladdin's Castle arcade into the 2000s. I'd go to a nearby Tex-Mex joint for lunch, play a bunch of rounds of Galaga (they had the souped-up quick-laser setting, so rock and roll!), then hit Borders for books. Best triad of geekery since the Tower Records–Newbury Comics–Compleat Strategist triangle I'd run through in Boston back in the Reagan–H.W. era at college.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm ultradamno:

Was there ever a Lawnmower Man video game?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Handy Haversack:

Or maybe the greatest boardgame of all time, Cosmic Encounter?
  6:49pm Ed Flynn:

BTW don't bother watching the sequel. It disappointed a little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm listener james from westwood:

"This is Free Trader Beowulf, calling anyone..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm listener james from westwood:

@Dean, @Handy: Either Cosmic Encounter or Triplanetary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm mecha maiko:

Can we get a de-gifitng guide? How to convince our loved ones to get rid of their existing surveillance devices?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Wendy del Formaggio:

The flying indoor drones thing makes me especially nervous for women and Queer youth living in abusive households.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Fuzzy:

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.

There is a small mailbox here.
  6:51pm Dean:

None of them ring a bell, Handy and ljw, but this was definitely nerdy. Cosmic Encounter seems very similar to what I remember. I remember the board and pieces were die-cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Handy Haversack:

James, Cosmic Encounter just came out with a two-player version, Cosmic Encounter: Duel! I picked it up. Hoping to play it this week!
