A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am PaulRobeson1920:

A determination to fight for genuine peace, baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am YETI BOB:

Can you imagine being on the surface of the actual moon, that far away from home, with only one other person, knowing you can't survive there very long, and not being sure that your rocket would even get you home? Staying calm and collected and trying to ration your remaining electric power and not just totally FREAKING OUT? (which I'm sure is what I would have done!!!).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am YETI BOB:

@RevRab: I remember one Sunday during my youth, being allowed to stay home from church to watch an Apollo launch ... this was somehow more important than Jesus (at least for that day)

@Yeti Harsh mhmmm “ I can't pay no doctor bill.
(but Whitey's on the moon)“
Avatar 9:24am fm Mike:

This is gonna sound weird, but I swear that painting looks like a tweet where a guy is describing his family and supernatural events, and he had a picture of a person in that exact same pattern of clothing and said, "This is a certain type of witch doctor. If you ever see one like this at market, walk directly past and do not talk to them."

Otherwise, pretty picture!
Avatar 9:25am Marc Francis:

This is all so perfect. Thanks Trouble!
Avatar 9:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You get Gil's point (& they were all white males...) But the budget is 53% Military & who knows how little for the Universe... Overall - the whole Martian Chronicles idea of we'll only have to face our Inner Space the farther Out we go makes sense tho. Why polute another planet with sadism & waste if we just poop in our own doggy dish on Earth...
Avatar 9:28am nematomorpha:

Hi all!
Slowly recovering from a pretty bad stomach flu
this is sooo trippy.
Maybe i forgot i took it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am YETI BOB:

It would have been Apollo 10 (18 May 1969) or Apollo 16 ( 16 April 1972) - those were the only ones that launched on Sundays. It was probably the 1972 launch.
  9:30am SledDawg:

I watched the first moon landing in the living room of a deaf mute couple while their son (not deaf mute) was doing a big pot deal with my friend. True...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am cccinkc:

Trouble, this whole thing is amazing! Thanks so much for this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am PaulRobeson1920:

Thats interesting Sleddawg. I imagine a hundred thousand+ 19year olds hearing about the Moon landing from the radio while in Vietnam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Trouble:

you are very welcome @ cccinkc!
  9:40am Bill W:

Sounds like that interview track was a press briefing about the Apollo 13 crisis... though I thought it was Jules Bergman of ABC asking all the questions.
Avatar 9:40am Listener Gregory:

Not sure what that all was, but pretty incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am YETI BOB:

they were really IMPROVISING, nobody had ever done this before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am melinda:

Fab set!
Avatar 9:41am fm Mike:

Did you know that the original Apollo broadcast was sent down to Australia, and was perfectly clear? It was only because it got transmitted across the world that we have that grainy audio of it, instead of the super clear audio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am YETI BOB:

13 was the unlucky one, right?
Avatar 9:47am fm Mike:

Moon Love started with the same second note as the first note of 'Savage'. I was like, "WHUT LOL" for a second!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Handy Haversack:

YB, yes -- I can see the VHS from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Brian in New Orleans:

love the grainy audio.....imagine it is space dust
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Trouble:

thanks @yeti bob
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am YETI BOB:

Maybe they should have skipped over 13 and just called it Apollo 14 - like building elevators
  9:49am johnzo:

HELLO MODERN WORLD & WORLDSTERS
  9:51am Warwick joe:

Great great stuff
Avatar 9:52am fm Mike:

@Yeti Bob, there was probably some New Yorker on that NASA naming team who said the same thing lol. And everyone was just like, "Hah, superstitious New Yorker."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Handy Haversack:

Apollo 11 was the one that worked -- the first landing. One of the A13 astronauts never got to land after having to abort, as I recall.

The movie is competence porn but still worth a watch. Ed Harris looking concerned is always a treat.
Avatar 9:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Competence Porn
...you mean like - for women?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Handy Haversack:

Like Ron Howard gently reassuring the US of A that, gosh darn it, white guys in ties can solve anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am YETI BOB:

@HH: Nobody from A13 landed on the moon .... they looped around and came back without landing
  9:58am Bill W:

The veteran commander of A13 was Jim Lovell, so it was expected he would get another shot, I guess. Instead he got to be played by Tom Hanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Handy Haversack:

YB: Right, but the astronaut corps wasn't that big. The expectation was that if they didn't land that time, there was still a good chance of doing so on another mission. But then we started deprioritizing landings, moved to the Space Shuttle, and then ceded space to private capital.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am YETI BOB:

The Apollo missions were all "one guy stays on the orbiter (SM), two guys go land in the LEM". So there was always that one guy who made it most of the way to the moon, then had to hang out by himself while his buddies got to go play golf and plant flags and make famous quotes and stuff. (I have a lot of sympathy for astronauts)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Trouble:

good morning @bill W; glad to 'see' you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am YETI BOB:

@HH: Oh, I see what you mean
  10:00am Adrian in London:

Oh lovely, The Apartments. I saw them play with Piano Magic in a tiny candlelit room in a recording studio in Crystal Palace a couple of years ago. What I’d give to go to such a gig now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Handy Haversack:

Fred Haise "was to have been the sixth person to land and walk on the Moon, but the Apollo 13 mission was aborted before lunar landing. He went on to fly Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests in 1977, and retired from NASA in 1979."
Avatar 10:01am Joe McG:

Thanks for the Apartments, Trouble. Always loved this song, always forget about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Hughie Considine:

I love how you just never know what The Modern World will serve up.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Pale Son:

I am so into the harp lately. Looked into possibly buying one as I'd love to learn to play. Unfortunately, they cost about $35,000!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am YETI BOB:

@KFHP: They tried (unsuccessfully) to recover it - "shuffling feet for two hours in soft muck". Honestly one small drone in Lake Michigan is not going to make that much difference. Also the eagle appeared to be unharmed. Official report from the Michigan Department of the Environment here: www.michigan.gov... (I was hoping for video, but no)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am ParUbi:

this fursaxa is pretty neat! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Trouble:

@pale son: alice coltrane's birthday is next thursday. and to celebrate the coltrane house is holding a concert live via facebook featuring harpist brandee younger. look up coltranehome on insta and perhaps their facebook name is the same?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am YETI BOB:

This report from mighigan.gov is great!!! A few quotes (note, EGLE stands for "Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy", and the EGLE drone was brought down by an Eagle!)

From the report:

"Eagle populations have rebounded in Michigan. A 2019 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey showed 849 active nesting sites In Michigan, up from a low point of 76 nesting sites in the 1970s.

EGLE reached out to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to see if it might issue a citation or violation notice to the rogue eagle. A spokesperson said the agency has no mechanism or authority to issue corrective action notices to individual, non-human wildlife, noting it would likely take an act of the legislature to do so. Even then, it might be subject to a legal challenge. "Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do," the spokesman said. "Nature is a cruel and unforgiving mistress."
Avatar 10:20am βrian:

So the eagle really just made an editorial correction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Pale Son:

Oh nice, thanks, Trouble! Been listening to a lot of AC these days. I'm not on FB, but should be able to hack in somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Handy Haversack:

Yeah, we go to Western MI, near the lake, every year (except this one, damn it), and over the last 25 years I have watched eagles become, if not common, at least expected. It is strange not to see one pretty much daily out there, and there are a few spots we know where they nest and we can expect to see them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Trouble:

many pages are open to the public, so you don't have to 'be on' facebook...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Pale Son:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am YETI BOB:

Earlier this year Bannon said: "When people see the difference between the order of Trump and the chaos of Biden, I think it’s going to be a pretty clear choice and I think Biden’s going to have a very tough time making this case to people." Yeah, Nothing says "order" like a slew of indictments!

WFMU is just chock-a-block with good news this morning. First, I find out that Lonnie Holley and Vangelis recorded a cover of the Apollo missions, and now Bannon has been arrested by <reads>... agents from the U. S. Postal Service?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am tim from champaign (now washington):

I live in a state with mail in voting. It's awesome! The state also provides a non-partisan published voter guide that is excellent. Ballots can be mailed or dropped off. I spend a lot of time driving in rural areas of the county I live in and have seen that drop boxes are pretty easy to get to. Boxes are typically found at libraries, fire stations, government building et al.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Yes:

great tim maia track :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Carmichael:

Maybe Matt can work his zapping magic ...

I see Brian Eno in the setlist. Guess I'll be in the archives later!

Trouble - that's awesome about the Coltrane house. I had no idea. Did you see the Maggot Brain mag cover feature on Alice Coltrane. It was cool but maybe not revelatory for Alice fans. There's an Alex Brown painting of ALice Coltrane in it that's pretty amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am sphere:
