A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Trouble and everyone. Kerry James Marshall is great - I've seen a few shows of his work here in Chicago. I don't know the painting that's on the playlist today, but most of his painings are very large and are just overwhelming when you stand in front of them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am YETI BOB:

Ok, found it - this one - titled “Black and part Black Birds in America: (Crow, Goldfinch)” - is not huge, it's 27 7/8 x 24 3/4 inches. If you are interested in more about this great artist, here's his gallery page: jackshainman.com... , lots of great work there. Looks like he was also featured in the NYT recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am redbee:

Thanks Yeti! I've always thought of his figurative work, but this is such a lovely composition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Trouble:

the Marshall painting is from a brand new series made this spring, on exhibit now at david zwirner www.nytimes.com...

Good morning

Trouble is Always on that Top Shelf!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am redbee:

On a bird-related note, I took up some recommendations from you all, from a few weeks back... I visited the Audubon center in New Jersey (Scherman Hoffman) and used the Song Sleuth app to identify a bunch of birds. It made for such a pleasant, lovely day. Highly recommended, and I can't wait to get a pair of binoculars and go back during migration season.
  9:19am Ed From Jersey City:

It sometimes borders on a Mexican prison riot with the distance learning but , all in all, everyone is healthy and happy. The dog is in seventh heaven because he has company all day. I hope DJ Ice Pack and Mr. Trouble are good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Yes:

Morning all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Handy Haversack:

Nice, redbee! We went out to the Delaware River to see friends a couple of weeks back and saw some birds that are less common in north Brooklyn: grosbeaks (they left here when it heated up), goldfinches, titmice, chickadees, hummingbirds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Trouble:

i feel for you @ed... so hard for parents of young kids. my college student is deep in his computer all day long, no social life, but that's another kettle of fish. say hi to nilka!
Avatar 9:21am Really Lisa:

@redbee, I was going to ask if you made it to any of those spots! Glad it worked out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am YETI BOB:

Thanks Trouble. That NYT article is really good, I'm glad they featured him. The other link I posted has a lot more of his work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Trouble:

  9:23am Bennett:

Morning everyone!
Avatar 9:23am rebuketodali:

Thank you for playing this Arthur Russell. I have had another track from World of Echo in my head for weeks and was not able to place who recorded it. Mystery solved!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am YETI BOB:

Suddenly thinking of how long it's been since I've been to a museum or art gallery (something I used to do a lot). Lately I've been walking around the city photographing graffiti, trying to get my art fix. There's some pretty great street art in and near my neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am redbee:

HH: I love the Del Water Gap, really incredible birding there, and such a variety of flora as well. I think I've seen grosbeaks there earlier this summer. I've not yet seen a hummingbird on the east coast, that's awesome! Glad to hear you had some good sightings.

Lisa: Yes! Thanks much! New favorite spot, and I'm looking forward to checking out some of the waterfront preserves in the future.
Avatar 9:25am BeNowBobby:

The article On James Marshall is stunningly amazing, beautiful art and artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am redbee:

With the help of using the Song Sleuth app, I realized that the hawk I thought I was hearing near me in central Brooklyn is actually a blue jay impersonating one. At the Audubon center I was able to hear a blue jay and a hawk screaming at each other (hah), the difference is subtle...
Avatar 9:28am Henry C.:

really entranced by that Anika track, thanks for spinning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am deborah:

@9:25YETI BOB: Thinking the same. Miss it all. Montclair Art Museum is within walking distance and was a favorite haunt, along with galleries there and in Jersey City. It might be a while until these places reopen. Sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Handy Haversack:

Ha, redbee, yeah! Our local bluejay teens have been amusing themselves by hawk whistling to scare the sparrows off the feeders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am YETI BOB:

(Interesting nugget from the NYT article, if you don't have time to read it: James Audubon was probably Black, with Haitian origins ... part of the reason Marshall is working with bird imagery)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am redbee:

"bluejay teens", haha! Feathery blue terrors. I'll hear the cry and then see a flock of pigeons go scattering.

For some reason that direct URL wasn't working, but here's what got me through:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Passaic River Blues:

@A: The Jean C. Roché records I've come across are pretty good.

Regarding Audubon and the sometimes sordid backstories of many of the eponymous names of beloved American birds:
  9:39am Melmoth:

I recognize this tune from somewhere...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Trouble:

bird records i use are 10" recordings by Jean Claude Roché.
Avatar 9:40am BeNowBobby:

Marshall also talks about the "plane" with regard to his paintings which refers to Perspective, the imaginary line corresponding to viewers line of sight perpendicular to the viewers line of sight. if that makes sense... too many art history classes
Avatar 9:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thot it might be riffing on 'Summertime' - & beautifully...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am YETI BOB:

@Trouble: Letter sent, donation made!! Thanks for bringing this to attention. As redbee pointed out act.audubon.org is not 100% right but anyone with a brain can find it off the main audubon.org page.
Avatar 9:41am jt:

Along the forrest trail, during lulls in bird sightings, it often comes up that JJ Audubon was ALSO shooting the birds in order to get all the details right in his depictions of them..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am YETI BOB:

@RR1163: Tune of "Summertime" itself is lifted from a Ukrainian lullaby! (By a Jewish songwriter trying to create a Negro spiritual...)
  9:42am SeanG:

morning Trouble and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am JG:

@Melmoth- the flute part is similar to Jethro Tull's Bouree
Avatar 9:43am BeNowBobby:

Nana Adjoa's song is still in my head.
I had to grab it off Bandcamp. <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Trouble:

amazing children's book that gives insight to audubon's life and how he worked: " the boy who drew birds" by Jacqueline Davies
  9:44am Melmoth:

Rabbit, I think your right, it’s very similar to Gershwin’s summertime
Avatar 9:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fascinating Yeti ! I love the fusion that Gershwin was & how it could only happen in NYC & then.
'canto de xango' implies maybe a chant for a Vodun loa ??...
Avatar 9:45am BeNowBobby:

Have a bird on my fire escape who can't fly. they lived in my little birdhouse off apartment window... I think he fell out of birdhouse and parents were feeding him last night and this morning. Hope she gonna be ok

Avatar 9:46am Pale Son:

@BeNowBobby I read those birds usually figure it out w/o any human help.. keep the cat away and it should do ok.

O my yes keep those cats inside!
Avatar 9:49am βrian:

Avatar 9:49am BeNowBobby:

jt: ty yea I just watched from window, so thanks so much I'll let nature do its thing. I'm glad she up high on fire escape safe from Predators.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am YETI BOB:

BeNowBobby: If the parents are feeding the baby bird, that's a good sign.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am YETI BOB:

BeNowBobby: Does the bird have a comfortable spot on the fire escape? I've rescued a few baby birds and generally what I do is make a temporary "nest" for them out of a basket or bowl and some rags. If the parents know where the baby is, it usually works out OK.
Avatar 9:52am BeNowBobby:

Yeti- right? I thought so too and she is spunky chirping loud and strong has energy just can't fly yet she not that small. I thought it was a good sign too. Thanks Yeti I heard her all night out my window, poor little thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Handy Haversack:

Gah, Trouble, somehow I ended up with back-to-back meetings this morning. Blargh. The show has been sounding great. I want to hope I'll be back before the end ... but I'm low on hope this week.

At any road, thanks, Trouble! As always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am gilmour:

Good Morning. I'm glad to be listening. I hope you enjoyed your day off last week.

Thanks, Trouble, for the Zadie Smith rec, some really great stories in there and maybe not something I would have read on on my own.

I've just started Lincoln on the Verge by Ted Widmer (another NYer "briefly noted") -- it's very good and seems extremely relevant to current political circumstances; i'm learning a lot

"Invisible Man " Ellison coincidence..also just started reading it, a much marked up paper-back copy.. He is an amazing writer, not light reading at all. My partner is going through Octavia E. Audiobook recommendation: "Sigh, Gone" by Phuc Tran, a memoir of being an immigrant kid in PA in the 80s. If you're having trouble paying attention due to quarantine brain, this is good, since it's a series of funny, sad episodic segments, well-told, but also all connected. Great narration.
Avatar 10:41am northguineahills:

@WoodsOfNH: There was a gallery exhibit in 2003 called the "LP show'. Musicians and artists put together album covers. Christian Marclay used "whipped cream and other delights" and other album covers that copied/parodied it to make a pixelated image of the original album cover from afar. (there were scores of non-Herb Alpert covers used, many I've never seen since....

@dean from old bridge: i play him all the time, as do many wfmu dj's...
Avatar 10:56am northguineahills:

@Dean: I discovered Onyeabor from WFMU and The Wire simulateneously I believe when the first reissue came out. (I believe it was Scott Williams first, then Trouble).

Hello, late, from blissfully rainy London. By rainy I mean monsoon.
Avatar 11:00am BeNowBobby:

I skimmed through the Astralblack cd on Bandcamp I downloaded. Wow and wow !!! This gonna be a fun record. TY Trouble!!!
Avatar 11:00am Pale Son:

Do I hear Eno's voice in there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Yes:

sounds like it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Trouble:

sorry about that @ adrian. it is raining hear, and it's a nice rain as opposed to most of the ferocious, flooding rains we have had this summer. although there is a flash flood warning, so someone somewhere is getting it downpour stylee
Avatar 11:01am BeNowBobby:

What does freedom mean to you?
Nina Simone - "NO FEAR, NO FEAR!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am YETI BOB:

@PaleSon: Looking at the credits for this album - Eno is credited with backing vocals. And Robert Palmer (Addicted to Love) is credited with percussion. Really??
Avatar 11:03am Pale Son:

@Yeti Ha ha! Must've stopped by the studio one day.
Avatar 11:04am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Saw online Edinburgh had flooding. Been some compelling documentation of what rising sea levels are meaning for London.

Avatar 11:06am BeNowBobby:

Now I just downloaded that William Onyearbor track that sounded amazing.

  11:08am Listener Gregory:

Trouble, is it Robert Palmer the singer or the music critic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am YETI BOB:

"Silver and Gold" by Onyeabor is my favorite.
Avatar 11:08am Pale Son:

I think "Alabama" actually came after "Sweet Home...". It was a back-and-forth kinda thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am YETI BOB:

Gregory - the "Addicted to Love" singer.
Avatar 11:09am Pale Son:

Nope, I'm wrong. Trouble was right.
  11:09am Davec1:

Robert Palmer....what a guy...I’m sneaking sally thru the alley....
Avatar 11:10am BeNowBobby:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am YETI BOB:

I wonder if he ever got help for that addiction.
  11:10am Listener Gregory:

@Yeti B, yikes! The critic actually played clarinet on an Ornette Coleman album once, so it's not out of the question.
Avatar 11:11am Hubig Pie:

Angelique Kidjo does a great take on Listening Wind off Remain in Light
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am YETI BOB:

Hubig: That entire Kidjo album is GREAT. I can't really listen to the Talking Heads records any more (overexposure), but I can listen to Angelique Kidjo's version all day long.

Native of Portugal, here. "D" is "D." no matter what. Brazilian Portuguese has heavy African influence in the spoken language. So, difference is mostly about phonetics, not structure. Basically, it's Portuguese with some jazz added to the mix, making it a bit more melodic....and less rigid.
Avatar 11:17am Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello Trouble and all, just in time to can't get enough

@winston: I did my undergrad at UF, and my MA at CUNY-Hunter (NYC), and then spent 16 years up there, before coming back down to work at an environmental science startup before DeSantis slashed the Everglades restoration budget. Now, just underemployed. (I actually have a Gators facemask a friend made for me, out of the other generic ones I have). I used to have friends that lived in Tally, and used to visit often, but almost all of them left.

Don't forget that Congress mandated that the USPS fund a retirement fund for 75 years, something no other federal or private agency ever had to fund (hence their funding shortage).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am dave wuz here:

does buying stamps actually help the situation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Stanley:

Hi Trouble and everyone.
Please don't understimate the effect of the US on the rest of the world. For the sake of the whole world, please register, if you haven't done so and vote for a change in government.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Corey:

Have always been impressed with the consistency and scope of the USPS. Have had significantly more bad experiences with private carriers.
  11:52am Rich in Bristol:

When you're buying stamps from your Post Office, make sure to check out their variety of gimmicky alternative ones. I recently received a sweet Star Trek stamp from my buddy in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hip hop DJ stamps are available. store.usps.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Trouble:

yes buying stamps helps. write your representatives and tell them to save the PO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am ratso:

Great Show. Got me to be very productive!
  11:55am Rich in Bristol:

Nice, Ken!
Avatar 11:56am northguineahills:

@dave: The USPS gets no funding from the government, but they can have their hours reduced by executive decree. Less hours, less income. stamps is how they make the most of their money, even more then package mailing.
Avatar 11:56am TDK60:

Thanks, Trouble DJ.
