Hey there, efd, everyone! We are also alive and glad to know you are, too!

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Jim the Poet:

Hey efd I'm dead on the inside but let's do this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Chop Scott:

Hello EFD--sounding great! Thanks for the board op Scott W.!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm mariano:

Hey efd, crew, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Fuzzy:

Hello! We're alive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Handy Haversack:

You've lowered your case, mariano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm MARIANO!!!!!!:

There, you happy now, Handy? Huh? HUH?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Mariano:

(Thanks for the reminder)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Handy Haversack:

Better. Better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Mariano:

I've wondered before if an exclamation point can be legally added to one's name.
Avatar 9:11pm javakid:

Have a Mooney Suzuki promo (different album) that has this NYT quote featured "Loud, boring and utterly charmless." I disagree and have a feeling they did too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Handy Haversack:

Probably a state-by-state matter, Mariano. In LA ... hmmm. I'd put the over/under at "maybe"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm efd:

odd choice for a quote on a promo sticker!
Avatar 9:15pm Joe B:

hey efd!
Avatar 9:15pm javakid:

It's on the back tray of the CD efd. The irony....

  9:17pm Aaron from Ocean:

Starting out stronggggg
  9:17pm Figgsrock:

EFD, I bought this comp I think because you played this cover a few years ago? Is that possible?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm efd:

hiya Joe, Scotts, javakid, M/mariano(!), Handy, Jake, Jim, Fuzzy, UM and all! Thanks for tuning in! The White Hills set coming up is killerrrrrrr
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm efd:

@Figgs that is extremely possible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Handy Haversack:

Black America specifically not singing Ringo? I mean, I'm fine with that! Just wondering if it was a specific choice or a coincidence that just no one wanted "Octopus's Garden."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Mariano:

Wowww, had no idea the Stairsteps did a cover of Dear Prudence. It's the only one I've heard that preserves the bass line, which is my favorite part.

Handy: I've heard a soul version of "It Don't Come Easy", can't remember who it was, maybe Aretha. Pretty damn good too. Then again, a soul treatment can make any song good.
Avatar 9:19pm JakeGould:

“Loud, boring and utterly charmless.” That’s what she said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

My cryptic blurt refers to the fact that Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey is drumming on that "Dear Prudence".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Handy Haversack:

We are off to a smoking-hot start, efd!

Mariano, I heard Ringo was going in for a long course of soul treatment.
  9:22pm dano59:

Get a real World Party vibe off this ... (digging out Clean box set now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm efd:

not sure how many shows I'll need to do from home for me to stop being amazed and awed that this works but.... I still can't believe this works!
  9:23pm Figgsrock:

@EFD, I imagine that I’ve easily bought 25 albums and twice that many physical/digital singles because of your show through the years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Uncle Michael:

More Demis Roussos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Scott Williams:

One day, EFD, we will see you perform these Aphrodite's Child drum-fills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm efd:

gosh, I hope so Scott!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Uncle Michael:

Scott, will you sing this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Mariano:

Reminds me of Jane's Addiction a bit, this Aphrodite's Child. Speaking of whom... you never seem to hear much JA these days. When they came out they were like the second coming gauging from the way many friends of mine went crazy for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Scott Williams:

Well, UM - I'm no Demis Roussos in the pipes dept!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Uncle Michael:

How about...ummm...Bryce!
  9:27pm Justin:

Interesting comment Marian. Actually does sound like JA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Handy Haversack:

I think that a lot, Mariano. I was and am a big fan. There was Porno for Pyros the other day on ... WarWake and Bake? No, Mark Hurst played it! Ha!

But with all the bootlegs out there, I'm surprised not hear them a bit more?

Manny and I have periodic JA nights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm efd:

I was hoping to get Clay to do it, but that hasn't panned out to date
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Scott Williams:

@Mariano, I was a big JA fan back then - but they haven't aged well, a lot sounds extremely 1991
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Uncle Michael:

This album is just amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Handy Haversack:

I still AM extremely 1991, Scott!

(Also, hi, Scott!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Scott Williams:

Hahaaa, hey Handy!
  9:28pm Justin:

I saw them live in 88 or 89 at lamour east in brooklyn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Mariano:

Scott: Yeah, I didn't dislike them but I wasn't crazy about them. I saw them at the first Lollapalooza and was really impressed with their live show, so I liked them more after that.
  9:30pm she:

too close to the mic EFD??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm PigeonsAndRust:

Great show so far! Might want to back off the mic gain a little
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Handy Haversack:

I saw that and then a couple of solo shows, Mariano, ... and then the Relapse tour in ... 1998? Which was very good -- they were superb in a smaller venue.
  9:32pm Melissa:

Where can i find that Va-Let album? Loved Dear Prudence
  9:32pm johnk77:

lollapalooza secret name
line up of losers
did that first tour include
a stop at a dusty outdoor venue in nj?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Mariano:

I really liked seeing JA live, but Siouxsie was on right before them, and I did feel a bit of outrage: Siouxsie, opening for JA? That's so 1991!
  9:33pm andrewb:

I'd like to see rammstein in a lounge setting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, I feel that, Mariano. Siouxsie called it the "sunset schizophrenia set" when we saw it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

That Emperor track sounded like Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm mndave:

@efd, sounds studio-quality to me over here!
  9:36pm mr_donutsu:

Yeeszzzzzzzzz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Scott Williams:

Hahaa, when I saw that 1st Lolla, Siouxsie reminded us that "this will not be another fucking Woodstock!" Jane's, NIN, Buttholes and Body Count were all great. Too many onstage guns tho.. ahhh, the early 90s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Mariano:

johnk77: I went to the one in Kansas. Highlights for me were definitely Butthole Surfers and Siouxsie, but in general I'm not a huge festival fan, especially for seeing a band like Butthole Surfers.

That was a cool set, Handy: huge statue of a reclining Buddha iirc. And yeah Scott, of course Gibby had his shotgun.
  9:38pm mr_donutsu:

White Hills is THE live band of the pandemic. Thx Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm efd:

I can assure you it is my absolute pleasure, mr_donutsu!
  9:39pm DJPeezyWeezy:

very nice!! i love the three piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Scott Williams:

@Mariano, and didn't Ice-T have, like, a big silver .45?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm efd:

I should have mentioned that I'll be talking with White Hills after the set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Stevel:

Well, if this isn't a first-world crisis--my bluetooth speaker just took a dump. Jamming through the computer speakers. The humanity.
Avatar 9:41pm coelacanth∅:

digging this
  9:42pm DJPeezyWeezy:

Please ask them when they will do another episode of Cooking With Dave W.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Handy Haversack:

Body Count did sound really good, though. I saw it in Atlanta. Body Count was a big hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Uncle Michael:

Bodycount was easily the loudest band I ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Mariano:

You know, I don't remember, Scott: Body Count was where I decided to brave the concession/bathroom line (over an hour), so all I heard was a loud 'I'M ICE MUTHAFUCKIN' T!" and then the band kicked in. I do remember a woman from an activist group getting into an argument with him over his violent lyrics. That just happened to go down steps from where I was standing, I think it was being filmed for MTV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm efd:

@Stevel that is a freekin' EMERGENCY!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Handy Haversack:

Or for SVU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Stevel:

Thank you for feeling my pain. I just dug out some dubious headphones. Pray they last. Pray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Mariano:

Rollins Band was there too, at least in the one I went to. Haha, Handy! Yeah, so weird that the Cop Killer wound up as a TV cop.
  9:48pm mr_donutsu:

LSD, of course!
Avatar 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

i wonder just what the threat against him was that forced him to take that roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Scott Williams:

@UM, mine was Wedding Present at CBGB, 1994(?). Caveat: loudest, while still sounding amazing. I don't count loud that sounds like crap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Scott Williams:

EFD, good GOD this set sounds good!
Avatar 9:50pm ian_:

that is NOT what i expect to hear when i see the name "Emperor"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm efd:

I knew I could count on them to do it right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Mariano:

They *don't* recommend the use of LSD? What is wrong with them?
  9:51pm CC:

nice sound quality excellent stereo separation!!!...
  9:51pm Andal:

wf MU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Handy Haversack:

Liability purposes, Mariano.

Also: backing up Scott's review. This sounds great!
  9:52pm mr_donutsu:

Recorded in a kitchen people...

...Dave was cooking pancakes with his left hand while all this was laid down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Chop Scott:

A wonderful treat this White Hills set!!
Avatar 9:53pm javakid:

@Scott loudest for me was MBV at the Ritz (uptown) in 1992. They headlined with Pavement and Superchunk supporting. Absolutely the loudest experience of any kind I've experienced.
Avatar 9:53pm ian_:

loudest show ever for me has to be between LoOp in a tiny pub in Brighton or Motorhead at Brixton Academy. I think.
  9:53pm DJPeezyWeezy:

Loudest for me was probably Motorhead in 87 at the Trocadero in Philly.
Avatar 9:54pm ian_:

live set is ripping, Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm efd:

Thanks man! I'm digging it too, got the headphones cranked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Mariano:

Yeah, amazing set from White Hills, efd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Uncle Michael:

I can't say that Bodycount sounded amazing, Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm efd:

honestly I'm just so delighted that I/we/they could make this happen at this time, it's really cool.
Avatar 9:56pm Joe B:

this is great!
  9:56pm mr_donutsu:

Motörhead Seattle 82 - in an empty theater.
Big Black final show in an all concrete power plant, Seattle 87.
But Swans at ATP Iceland 2015 might top them both.
Avatar 9:57pm javakid:

agreed - sounds great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Handy Haversack:

@efd, do you talk to them about their practice during lockdown times in the interview? Kate's been polling bands she knows and thinking hard about how bands are dealing with this.

Hey, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm efd:

the interview will be live, so we'll talk about that!
Avatar 9:59pm Joe B:

loudest band I ever saw - Dinosaur Jr at Maxwells; runner-up Ramones at City Gardens
  9:59pm CC:

I got it cranked on the Hi-Fi so it can complement the natural ambience of my living room!!!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, cool, @efd!
Avatar 10:00pm Joe B:

re Lollapalooza - enjoyed the first show - went to both nights at Waterloo Village in NJ and the day after the second show, listening to FMU and hearing the two DJs (who I can't recall) talk about how pathetic Lollapalooza and its fans are. Oh well!
Avatar 10:01pm javakid:

there are stories of MBV, Dinosaur Jr. and Jesus and Mary Chain on the Rollercoaster tour trying to 1-up eachother in terms of volume. It was one of the ages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Mariano:

Yeah well who's laughing now, Joe B ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Scott Williams:

Joe B, that's the show I was at. Let's guess who the FMU DJs were! Hmm.....
Avatar 10:05pm Joe B:

It was one male, one female. not sure what the context was - maybe a show transition, or maybe one person was a guest.
Avatar 10:06pm coelacanth∅:

i went to a small festival at waterloo village c.1998 that i totally forgot about until now. i wonder who played...
Avatar 10:07pm Joe B:

Waterloo had its moments - Neil Young in 1989, great Allman Bros. show in 1990 or 91, first three Lollapalooza tours, the Everly Brothers in the tent ...
Avatar 10:08pm coelacanth∅:

ha- cool cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Stevel:

Holy fucking great cover!!
Avatar 10:10pm Joe B:

How many times is this for White Hills now on your show? third? plus Primavera ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Handy Haversack:

In Atlanta, the amphitheater venue was new -- might have been the first season. There hadn't been anything like it. Saw Lollas 1-3 there and WOMAD, which was amazing. For Atlanta, it felt liberating.
Avatar 10:10pm coelacanth∅:

i really don't remember! it must've been bands that someone else wanted to see that i didn't care that much about.

...i went to some other events at waterloo village, like a couple of native american festivals...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Stevel:

Thank you White Hills! Great set!

Tuning out the noise is important.

Only decent information is coming from our state and local government. Them, I listen to.

Luv Andrew!!!
Avatar 10:20pm JakeGould:

Festivals nowadays are out of control. At least Lollapalooza was about music when it started.

Also, Janes Addiction was big in that brief 1990s window before Nirvana and grunge overwhelmed everything. Then American indie rock became it’s own “Meh…” scene.

Before that Janes Addiction and tons of genuinely interesting Brit indie bands were out there.

All I can say about Janes Addiction is that they were/are so much better than Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Yeah, I still can't figure out a way to be OK with liking RHCP, Jake. But I have friends who do. It's an area best avoided!
Avatar 10:22pm JakeGould:

MSNBC is a cable channel from in the 1990s in a partnership between Microsoft and NBC. This was the early days of the Internet and partnerships like that existed.
  10:22pm Anon:

Thanks so much for such a fantastic show!
Avatar 10:23pm JakeGould:

@Handy: When I was in college in in the early 1990s, I was into Red Hot Chili Peppers… My oh my does that crap age horribly. I somehow was into the Smiths and those a-holes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Scott Williams:

fantastic conversation, EFD - I like Dave & Ego so much!
Avatar 10:24pm JakeGould:

Thankfully some guy knew turned me onto Tom Waits and then a few years later I would discover See/Hear and discovered Beat Happening and even early Bikini Kill.

Always thank people who tipped you off to better stuff.
Avatar 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

the smiths were a great band...they just needed a good vocalist!
Avatar 10:25pm JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: “The Queen is Dead” is still a great album. I was also into Lush and Ride. That still stays with me. Ditto with Cocteau Twins.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, I like everything about the Smiths except the lyrics and vocals. So ... I tend not to listen often.

I somehow managed to find New Model Army when I was young, which made all the difference.
Avatar 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks white hills! great set you guys are the Bomb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Mariano:

The Furs were supposed to play here in New Orleans in April, really bummed about missing it. I still love the Smiths, despite what Morrissey turned into later. A while back I found a Smiths doc on YT. When they first started out, there was a fifth member, but they kicked him out because he was too much of a bloke: he was married, had kids, etc., didn't go with the overall vibe. He got the shaft, just like Clarence the fifth Beatle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Handy Haversack:

In terms of keeping people alive, WFMU > Cuomo.
Avatar 10:29pm ashokmudholkar:

So cool that they managed a set without their drummer under these conditions. It was a cool set.
Avatar 10:30pm ashokmudholkar:

Also, Mariano: Bitch, I'M the fifth beatle

I like hearing some songs twice but the first time you're not supposed to let it totally finish before you start it over...and then let it finish the second time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm efd:

this comments board has a lot of unconventional ideas!
  11:07pm Carmichael:

The guitar interplay between Edmunds and Bremner is a thing to behold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Handy Haversack:

Well, that's ONE reason why most of the rest of us aren't DJs.

Play half of it then play the other half backward while translating it into Icelandic!

Goodness, though, the show is great tonight.
Avatar 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

shall we call the comment board "free form"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Handy Haversack:

Maybe "form free," coela.
Avatar 11:09pm coelacanth∅:

and Dave Edmunds is an underappreciated guitarist, in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Handy Haversack:

"Waffles!"
Avatar 11:10pm Joe B:

yup studio version is on Accidental Falls
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 11:11pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Stevel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Stevel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Phillippe! I was just negotiating on your behalf. Kate has made a couple of collages that might be band posters one day. In the meantime, I'm going to get her to let me send the scans to discerning aesthetes like you!
  11:16pm Carmichael:

“The music is reversible, but time is not. Turn back, turn back ....”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

Absolutely, Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

This song is sublime, and I don't throw that word around casually
  11:17pm CC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Aitch:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Aitch:

Slum of Legs band name of the year for me. Seems a decent record too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, wow, I LOVE Slum of Legs. Never heard a sound I didn't like from them.
Avatar 11:21pm herb.nyc:

Melanie herself sang this song. 2,3 summers ago at a free Lincoln center (Central Park?) event. She said "they kept delaying me from singing till about 2 or 3am. And when I did, I felt transformed, an out of body experience." So lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Scott Williams:

All the Slum of Legs I've heard so far (2 tracks? 3?) has been great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Aitch:

Gives EFD a mongrel apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Jeezy:

Yes, this Slum track is good, but the Slum of Legs track Dash played last night is even better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Handy Haversack:

I think I heard first on Spin Age Blasters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm efd:

@Aitch no more than a half mongrel at most
