  9:02pm sufferwords:

Just strap on a guitar and we’ll play some rock and roll... peace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Handy Haversack:

RIP. RIP.

Hey, efd, everyone.

Man, No More Heroes ... but still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm efd:

I never seriously considered giving my show a name or having a theme song, but when I flirted with the idea, this song/name is what I kept landing on.
  9:07pm Choggie:

I wonder why this band is so underrated they're awesome
  9:07pm CC:

The word 'Funk' represents a lot of very diverse ideas???
  9:07pm V Priceless:

RIP Dave Greenfield.....thanks for this trib, EFD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm efd:

I had to do it, V
  9:08pm sufferwords:

Stranglers like Mink DeVille are still bands that a few of us acknowledge as seminal but have remained a personal delicacy... that said nice that the rest of the world has caught up with Kraftwerk... V2 forever - peace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm ultradamno:

Lyrical content was an issue for some, particularly Sometimes, London Lady, Bring On The Nubiles...
  9:12pm steveL:

Stranglers sounded like nothing else. Pretty much still do. It took time for me to wrap my head around Black and White (I was still in high school) Much of it felt downright threatening.
  9:14pm Isaac:

They were called "The Stranglers," not "Up With People."
  9:14pm steveL:

Isaac: Definitely had something to do with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Matt_E:

Hey! Skin Deep is my favorite Stranglers tune
  9:16pm steveL:

Coincidentally, I dated a girl who went off for a year with Up With People around the same time. Our musical tastes were not really compatible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm efd:

nice one, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm ultradamno:

Oddly, they seemed to take a lot more scrutiny for just for being as popular as they were. I never heard as much heat directed at say, Eater, whose Get Raped was at least as problematic.
  9:17pm Isaac:

"Black and White," indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Matt_E:

Also, Mean to Me. (not a request)
  9:18pm Jett:

@EFD I guess you're playing The Stranglers in memory of Dave, will we also hear Kraftwerk? Florian Schneider died today, So did Millie Small.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm efd:

oh I've got "Mean To Me" lined up for the second set, never fear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm efd:

@Jett I'll leave those tributes to other WFMU DJs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Matt_E:

Nice!
  9:21pm chip:

hope this is just a tribute not a memorial. what a bass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Handy Haversack:

This is so good, efd. Thanks.
  9:21pm V Priceless:

what a fabulous track! Love ‘La Folie’
Avatar 9:22pm Erella:

These songs sound so great. I never thought of the stranglers as such a keyboard heavy band but today, that's what I notice
  9:22pm CC:

if you want to make a statement... the best way to do it is to write a song!!!
  9:23pm V Priceless:

woo! Dave forever!
  9:25pm ?:

Thanks for these tracks...i didn't realize how much i really dig the Stranglers..until i listen to these together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm ultradamno:

Tank, drive defensively!
  9:26pm steveL:

Tank, of course, was the very first Stranglers song I heard. It hooked me.
  9:27pm Will:

I remember the Stranglers were dissed by some because of the (prominent) keyboards, like, that wasn't punk.
Avatar 9:27pm RobinSays:

The Stranglers had a sort of grounded grandeur, very much anchored by Dave Greenfield's accomplished keyboards.
  9:27pm chip:

Ah, nutz. every time a band is played more then 3 times in succession = not good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm ultradamno:

Kind of a nice companion to GoF's Armalite Rifle
Avatar 9:29pm RobinSays:

@Chip. So true. I heard about Joe Strummer passing when Joe Belock played several Clash songs in a row. Very sad...
  9:30pm gw:

Dutches of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah. That set was so blisteringly good. But I sure do look forward to a week without a memorial show someday.

While also super grateful that WFMU DJs are here to remember the musicians we're losing.

But, hoo, long weeks.

I wish there were more stars I could put on this show, too.

(And thanks, Skeleton Scott!)
  9:31pm CC:

that's why people decided to stay home and just die instead!!!
  9:31pm sufferwords:

thanks for doing a double dip- Stranglers def have a deep enough catalogue
  9:32pm gw:

Duchess that is , great song
  9:33pm sufferwords:

they were punk to us- operating thesis being fuck you here it is- it was never a style though the tubes would tell you as much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Dave in SoDak:

I started doing College Radio when I was a Sophomore in High School. One of my fave delights back in 1981 was The Stranglers "Vietnamerica." Something about the open spaces - and the keyboards. Stellar.
  9:34pm CC:

the bad thing about respirators is that you can't sit up and cough good!!!
  9:34pm steveL:

Grounded Grandeur. Fits
Avatar 9:34pm ashokmudholkar:

I would give my balls to be in your place hearing a Stranglers' song for the first time listening with THEM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Aitch:

makes me feel like a wog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm ultradamno:

I can remember a guy telling me that he hated them mostly citing that Johnny Rotten had slagged them off in an interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm ultradamno:

Threatening, he seems so jolly lastfm.freetls.fastly.net...
  9:41pm CC:

Art is art... people will debate it!!!
  9:42pm V Priceless:

Such a great article. Thanks for the reading EFD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm ultradamno:

Well...Pink Flag
  9:44pm steveL:

Excellent piece. Thanks for sharing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Handy Haversack:

Damn. Thanks, efd. Seems all I'm capable of saying tonight! But I still means it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Chop Scott:

Great to hear all of this--as ever! Thanks EFD!! and Scott W.--Cheers!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm efd:

thanks folks! Here's the link to that article if anyone wants to take a look:
www.theguardian.com...
  9:46pm vertual:

Nice to hear rock journalism is still alive and well written. It's just very rare these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Scott Williams:

Great read, thanks EFD! And if anyone would also like to tip one to Florian, Alexis Petridis also has a brand new piece up on him: www.theguardian.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm efd:

Excellent, thanks for sharing that Scott! He's a pretty good at that writing stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Dave in SoDak:

thanks, scott w. Yeah, double whammy. Florian was genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Skeleton Scott!

What a freaking day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm ultradamno:

It would be nice if they were to allow a reissue of Ralf & Florian about now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Scott Williams:

Howdy Handy!
Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Julie M:

Eesh. I just tuned in a few minutes ago. I guess I've been isolating myself from news in general. So sad. The Stranglers carry very strong memories. for me. Thanks for the tribute, Evan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Matt_E:

Curve ball!
  9:57pm CC:

Funky show, EFD...cheerz buddy!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Scott Williams:

@ultradamno, it seems once Autobahn hit, Ralf & Florian disowned everything they did before, even the lovely Ralf & Florian. However there's a live show in Vancouver '75 making the rounds now that shows they were still playing Ruckzuck! Check Frow Show's archive from this week for a link to that show
  9:59pm Chapelhillian:

Are you going to go to the Vladimir songs that Dave was a key part of, or the Purple Helmets spin-off the JJ Brunel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm efd:

hi Julie - I feel the same way.
  10:00pm CC:

just remember you can't hide in in the dark when you have too many bright street lights!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Pablexa™:

Cheers - I only just found out about this from my buddy JB - Thanks for doing this
Avatar 10:01pm avalanche50:

Great mix of eras here, thanks much - saw Stranglers in 78, 80, 81, each time different and always fresh sounding, they kept challenging themselves in those early years
Avatar 10:02pm John from NP:

Pabs!! I love you!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm dave wuz here:

so many different sounds from the stranglers- "oh that's a stranglers song too, i love that song" rip DG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm efd:

thanks for saying so, avalanche50. Definitely leaning hard on the first few albums since that really when I fell in love with the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Pablexa™:

@JB I say Yes!!!! Let's name a date
Avatar 10:04pm John from NP:

How about last Tuesday?
  10:05pm sufferwords:

cause their high above the ground
Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Julie M:

Stranglers is one of those groups that I don't always think of when I'm in the mood for music, hell, there's so much out there, but all of these songs flood back so easily. And the beat, the beat, the beat. It's going to be under my skin for awhile, and I want that. Especially now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Pablexa™:

@JB Busy - Any earlier dates??
  10:08pm V Priceless:

Stranglers rule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Handy Haversack:

Well said, Julie M. Word.
  10:10pm steveL:

There’s a dark quality to their music that is oddly soothing these days. Not unlike my Rammstein binge about six weeks ago. Somber with bite.
  10:11pm N. Ron Hubble:

Highly unlikely there’s any Kraftwerk-Stranglers mashups in existence.
  10:11pm CC:

I liked the punk movement in the late seventies because it helped to drown out disco which made me sick because I couldn't stop my leg!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm ultradamno:

There is a Stranglers/Ghostface Killah mashup though www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:15pm John from NP:

@Pabs forget it, not interested anymore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Pablexa™:

@JB Ima very upset and Lynda wants Bring on the Nubiles
  10:17pm Lynderr:

Yes please - bring on the nubiles!
Avatar 10:18pm John from NP:

Lynderr!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Pablexa™:

Prolly not her JB
  10:19pm CC:

rock and roll!!!
Avatar 10:20pm John from NP:

That's our Lynderrr, is you dum?
  10:21pm Lynderr:

of course it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Pablexa™:

Yes™ - I'd just hate for it to be a coincidence
  10:26pm steveL:

efd: If you didn’t know, you’re kicking ass tonight. Carry on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm efd:

thank you SteveL!
  10:27pm CC:

yep!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm efd:

and CC!
Avatar 10:31pm John from NP:

Yeah, great show EFD, really enjoying it as I do my son's homework...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm radioronan:

Love how your Stranglers story segued into WBCN doc. It's great. Rent it for WFMU, people! Thanks for the Greenfield tribute.
  10:33pm Marie:

Hey Evan, I agree with steeL, above. I only tuned in as you were ending your tribute to Dave Greenfield. Thank you for that! I will be listening to the archive, fer sher! BTW, I saw Hugh Cornwell and band tour a few years ago and it was a great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Pablexa™:

I always get Dream Syndicate & Dream Academy confused
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm efd:

@radioronan I've picked up a thing or two over the years about how to string things together! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm efd:

cool, thanks Marie!
  10:34pm Marie:

I meant to type steveL :>)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm efd:

@Pablexa Dream Academy is the hey-yuh-yuh-yuh-yay one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Handy Haversack:

Sent a screenshot of the Stranglers set list to listener David (in London). I'm sure he'll check the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Scott Williams:

Wow, Steve Wynne's been listening to impLOG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm efd:

I don't hear a vacuum cleaner though??
  10:37pm Marie:

Also, Evan, I loved your Benjamin Orr/Cars tribute. Thanks for that, too. I SO love Benjamin Orr's voice. One of my fave male singer voices of all time.
  10:37pm vertual:

Always admired Steve Wynn and his mates to do things on their and terms and always sound the better for it- after all these years
  10:38pm CC:

Evan... I have been listening to you for what seems like an eternity!!!
Avatar 10:40pm ashokmudholkar:

Astonishing, great show tonight.
Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Ignore Function:

Aren't Flatworms on Drag City?
Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Ignore Function:

Good set, btw.
  10:42pm Marie:

Hey, I misspoke earlier, your tribute was to Ric Ocasek and the Cars as a part of his work. Sorry. I did not want to misrepresent your fine work, EFD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Scott Williams:

I definitely heard the vacuum cleaner!
  10:43pm N. Ron Hubble:

It’s on Cleopatra. I hope they don’t get ripped off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Chop Scott:

EFD! The show sounds great!!
  10:45pm CC:

it will be nice when bands can just take it on the road again!!!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm efd:

Thank you Chop Scott! btw I think someone you know is working this WBCN documentary- your name came up on our prep meeting yesterday. Initials E. L.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm efd:

@Marie I knew who you meant :) Thanks for the kind words
Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Ignore Function:

Whew. Now I can rest easy. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm efd:

haha, I found some mentions to Drag City that usurped the authority of the page that mentioned Castle Face!
Avatar 10:54pm Joe B:

hey efd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm efd:

hey Joe! You're up early for your morning show fill-in tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Handy Haversack:

People's Champ for Wake? That's worth getting up for!
Avatar 11:01pm Joe B:

efd, might just be an all-nighter!
  11:02pm CC:

Avatar 11:05pm JakeGould:

Breaking sad news… The co-founder (with his wife) of the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn has passed away. May all of his dreams come true! youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Kat in Chicago:

Hey Evan, been busy on the interwebs and haven't checked in, but excellent show tonight as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Kat in Chicago:

also I finally heard the Rachel Lichtman show, it soundtracked me deconstructing an old mattress in my kitchen because it was too heavy for me to drag downstairs by myself (the local metal scrapper appreciated the springs!)
  11:12pm steveL:

HONK IT!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm efd:

wow, that mattress deconstruction sounds like a chore and a half, Kat! Glad I could provide a soundtrack for that, thanks for checking in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Kat in Chicago:

I got time for such chores these days!
  11:21pm PJ:

Neutrals sounding very Gang of 4-y.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Handy Haversack:

I'm starting to fade, efd, but what a great show. Thanks so much to you and Skeleton Scott.

Have a good night, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm efd:

this has nothing to do with anything, but I just have to say that it remains MIND - BOGGLING to me that I can be sitting here in my house doing my goddamn radio show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm efd:

'night Handy!
  11:25pm steveL:

efd: Things will never be the same. We have, in part, our versatility to blame.
Avatar 11:31pm JakeGould:

@efd: You remind me of someone sending e-mail back in 1988.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Mr. Pumpy:

efd and all...hey!
Avatar 11:31pm JakeGould:

That’s not a criticism!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Stevel:

Jake: Spot on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Kat in Chicago:

Evan, it's amazing to me that you can do your show from home and it's indistinguishable from your studio show (I can't say that for all of them!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm efd:

@Jake well, I am someone who was sending email back in 1988, so... :)

@Kat I'm very happy that's the case!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Kat...agreed. I think it can be said for a good deal of them, though! Amazing crew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Kat in Chicago:

I don't even mind the glitches that some shows have had, I just think it's amazing that I can listen to Evan and hear no noticeable difference!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Kat in Chicago:

Bless everyone who's put time and money into keeping WFMU here for us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm radioronan:

Great show - Thanks Evan. Thanks Scott & skeleton crew!
