Avatar 3:15pm djsheilab:

That Etta James record is so sassy! Wish there were more "conversations with instruments" records.
  3:16pm JakeGould:

That would be an interesting late night talk show, “Conversations with Instruments.”’
  3:18pm Mike tp:

Listening happily to booming selections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I wonder if Geowulf had a site on Geocities?
  3:22pm Cooh John:

@JakeGould: my gateway record for talking horns was "Tubby the Tuba".

Taking the show mobile in the car, but wanted to thank you for the wonderful music all this year! Happy New Year, Sheila and all!
Avatar 3:39pm djsheilab:

@slowbear Agree about those ballads. Always so sincere + powerful.
  3:43pm slowbear:

This sounds like American jpop
  3:43pm Joe R.:

That chorus from Girls Aloud sounds like it was nicked from Abba (that's a compliment)
  3:45pm JakeGould:

Digging deep into the 1980s with this Kim Wilde!

  4:01pm JakeGould:

Janis Ian was on my mind since she came up in recent days to defend Steve Martin’s tweet regarding Carrie Fisher. Her reaction was top notch. Good person! And a dork who shares cut animal videos on social media as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm patrick321:

Hey Sheila B! I was listening in car but I had to park and sign in to say thx: Praying for Time what a beautiful song.
Avatar 4:03pm deep surface:

i LOVE cut animal videos @jakegould
  4:06pm Brian in New Orleans:

Great Janice Ian track....i never noticed before but she uses the term "dull surprise"....just like the band Cream did from around that time....

  4:13pm jerry h.:

I must share my thoughts with those who seem to be sympathetic to my beliefs. I subscribe to the NYTimes. I have for quite some time. I can no longer read or look at page1 or even the entire first section. Way too depressing. I do not have my head in the sand ,either. I recently saw a photo of a polar bear from the arctic circle who has now had to come to populated areas of Alaska and forage for food on the outskirts of town! His(or hers) source of food has also struggled or moved on as well. I will never forgat that photo taken maybe 50 to 100 ft. away but it was looking at the camera! At us! We can now look forward to an administration who deny the effects of global warming so things will get even worse. O woe is Me! and us!
  4:15pm jerry h.:

Sorry to be a bummer.
Avatar 4:17pm djsheilab:

@jerry h. No need to apologize. Many of us feel the same. It's very grim at the moment :(
Avatar 4:19pm djsheilab:

I find joy in completely inane things like segueing from an extreme 80s J-pop record into the very classy Jane Weaver and discovering they're in the same key :)
  4:21pm ncjay:

I'm convinced that segue was bred in a lab, @djsheilab. It was almost TOO perfect, and messed with my mind....
  4:22pm jerry h.:

Thankfully, not all is depressing. We must find joy and pleasure wherever and whenever we can. Now more than ever. One of those joys is Sophisticated Boom Boom with the incomparable djsheilab! ! :^)
Avatar 4:23pm The Contessa:

Hello Sheila! Sorry we're late. Hello everyone.
  4:26pm JakeGould:

Winter is kinda depressing at this specific time of year, so there’s that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Michael 98145:

i repeat: this year would have been SO much worse without WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm dale:

i had to google that jane weaver - npr called it a "kraut-pop opera of sorts"
  4:28pm Adrian in London:

Good evening Sheila, good evening all, Johnny Two-Desserts here. (Just been out for a VERY good meal)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm dale:

do you like ute lemper, sheliab?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Michael 98145:

( i see there is a hell circle for Virtuous Pagans :)
  4:34pm Kevin:

Careful what you wish for Shelia B. Mike Pence is the scariest guy in the room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Michael 98145:

( @dale, we were fortunate enough to see Ute at the Kennedy Center )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm SSS:

I agree. Look how close together his eyes are. Praetor eyes.
Avatar 4:36pm djsheilab:

@Kevin UGH. I always forget that he's next in line if Trump spontaneously combusts.
  4:37pm JakeGould:

Mike Pence is scary but competent which is scary. He’s normal politician scary. Donald Trump is an idiot who has validated base-level hate and prejudice. And that—to me—is a whole new level of crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm common:

happy friday sheila and all!
  4:38pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Funny you mentioned spontaneous combustion. Remember in the 1980s and 1970s when there were all of these reports of people just bursting into nothing all over the place? Why did that stop happening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm SSS:

Hey, I'll say it. If they both stroked out I would consider it proof of the existence of God.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm common:

agreed, sss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Michael 98145:

@ JakeG, and that was before everyone was vaping !
  4:42pm JakeGould:

@Michael98145: And before hoverboards as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm JtotheK:

bettye lavette 'what condition my condition is in' is terrific - i've yet to actually find that 45. the sharon jones arrangement of 'what condition' is very similar - also a great 45!
  4:43pm jerry h.:

Nothing against the New York Times. Sometimes I look at all this horrible stuff going on and think "thank you nyt for bringing this to most people's attention". So that would be a positive spin, right? Just hope the right people see it. Times has great Arts sections and I enjoy their tv listings as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm JtotheK:

and that Dee Dee was new to me, enjoyed it!
  4:46pm jerry h.:

Will write only re: music now.
  4:47pm Adrian in London:

NYT has Calvin and Hobbes so at least there's ONE good thing in each edition. But I wish it'd kept the overseas edition's name as the International Herald Tribune.
Avatar 4:47pm ChrisB.:

Sheila B., is this really you?
Avatar 4:49pm djsheilab:

@ChrisB That's a peculiar question! Yes, t'is me.
  4:50pm ashley morey:

Happy new year! Thanks for all the groovy tunes. Luv, ash + justin
  4:50pm Ken:

Hi Sheila and everybody! Enjoying the show from the middle of a deadly traffic jam in Pennsylvania. Music is helping.
  4:59pm jerry h.:

Great Nancy Wilson song!
  5:06pm JakeGould:

Jesus, Sheila… Today’s show is soooo 1980s… Not complaining!
  5:06pm Cliff in Prague:

Foreigner, whoa
  5:06pm Adrian in London:

My late grandmother, and I can't remember why, had a framed signed Engelbert Humperdinck photo that took pride of place in her kitchen. Big darts fan, Engelbert...
Avatar 5:06pm ChrisB.:

@Shelia B: Haha! That was not clear. I implied you were Lue Renney, as she is as exuberant as yourself!
Avatar 5:07pm KP:

Happy Boom Boom Year, Sheila and everyone!
Avatar 5:07pm djsheilab:

@ChrisB You compared me to Lue Renney! That is a compliment of the highest order. Thank you!
  5:07pm JakeGould:

FWIW, that sleeve design for “The Power of Love” is so beige/brown… Like you can buy candles and smudge sticks right near where that is sold.
  5:08pm Cliff in Prague:

Let's hear some Journey and Supertramp after this
  5:08pm JakeGould:

No “Supertramp” please… Now THAT would be too depressing.
Avatar 5:08pm djsheilab:

@Cliff In Prague They're all on this box set! It's ridiculous!
  5:10pm Cliff in Prague:

Sheila - AWESOME.

I just had an idea for those virtual reality goggle thingies in the TV commercials - the virtual drunk app. But then I thought, "What's the point?"
Avatar 5:35pm Cecile:

I will try to catch that. I miss Billy.
Avatar 5:36pm Cecile:

he wrote it about his partner who had passed away.

@Cecile Oh....that breaks my heart.

Avatar 5:42pm djsheilab:

@cecile completely.
Avatar 5:42pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:44pm Cecile:

the lyrics are tough here, too. Like an episode of Snapped ready to happen.
  5:45pm JtotheK:

@Cecile -- seconded, this Wham is quite popular in the JtotheK household!
Avatar 5:47pm drewo:

Thanks Sheila for the GM. The TOTP video of Wham! doing 'Young Guns' is a real treat. They are lip synching of course, but it's the dancing that makes it fab.
Avatar 5:47pm Cecile:

I don't know Michael's catalog that well. But the songs I know I love. Except for "Wake Me Up". That's just a wee bit dopey for me.
