Hey! Thanks to Governor Cuomo insisting the MTA get WiFi by the end of the year, I can write this comment while stuck in a subway train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Michael 98145:

* The song is based on a Ukrainian folk chant called "Shchedryk". *

  3:17pm JakeGould:

And the music helps too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm listener james from westwood:

Agreed, Michael. This Honey & the Bees track is worth a thousand Burl Ives–burped "Holly Jolly Christmas"es.

Avatar 3:30pm The Contessa:

May I just tell my Marvin Gaye story again, please? My friend met him in Kentucky Fried Chicken in Notting Hill in London and he gave her his phone number. She didn't ring him!!! Strange girl…

@Michael 98145 The Dali museum? Yes, we may well do that. Been here less than 24 hours and already met one pro cyclist.
  3:37pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Awesome memory! The fact that WFMU has somehow attracted a whole bunch of people who have complex and oddball relationships to Judaism is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Michael 98145:

yes, Dali haunts the area. See Port Lligat.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Rob Kopp:

Love Dali. Saw a big exhibition in Rotterdam in the early 70's. Another "modern" painter I like is Hundertwasser. When you're in Vienna to watch the famous Hundertwasser house, don't forget to go to the Hundertwasser museum nearby as well. Beautiful paintings. One of the things he created as well was a flag for Israel AND Palestina
Avatar 3:48pm Cecile:

oh! Bret McKenzie (under the name Blazer Force) wrote one called Electronic Santa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Adrian in London:

Ah, Juniore?!?! Juniore are one of the best things you've introduced me to Sheila, I'm like a ten-year-old going doolally about Adam Ant when it come to them. Love the b-side of this, their Mariah cover, too.
Avatar 3:53pm djsheilab:

@Adrian in London So glad to hear it! Their record came out on Burger over here, but nothing really happened. They are one of the best new bands me thinks.

You know what’s a Christmas movie people don’t talk about “3 Days of the Condor.” All of that crap happens during the holidays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Adrian in London:

YES!!! Fanny and Alexander is THE Christmas film. The vomiting witches!! The terrifying priest!! GOD, that priest is the most terrifying character in film!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Summer and Michael:

We watch "Fanny and Alexander" on Christmas, too! Sending love to you, dear Sheila!
  4:07pm ilovenon:

Topper. B
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Parq:

Well, F&A and Die Hard are great movies, but Christmas movies should be warm and sentimental. That's why my choice is Edward Scissorhands.
Avatar 4:08pm Cecile:

here is the one calypso/soca song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Adrian in London:

Kieslowski's Dekalog is a fun Christmas outing too, probably because I first saw it at Christmas on BBC2 a million years ago. Also, The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant and David Niven is a lovely Christmas film. I think it's on Mubi at the moment, the UK one at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Guido from Cologne:

Famous cover artwork, Kay Martin:
  4:09pm ilovenon:

should say Topper 1937 B
Avatar 4:09pm Cecile:

I watch Mark Morris's ballet "The Hard Nut" every Christmas. It's done in a 60s style with lots of gender bending and amazing Charles Burns sets. Full 90's Mark Morris narrates it. He looks like Kenny G.
Avatar 4:10pm Cecile:

Topper is fantastic.
  4:10pm mark:

oh no,
doctor jazz ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Mike Sin:

I've always loved that Lord Nelson track!
Avatar 4:11pm Cecile:

The Bishop's Wife is much better than the remake. The other actors are fine, but Whitney Houston is only good when she's mad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Rob Kopp:

Another one who's singing about Joey Ramone. Amy Rigby's single Dancing with Joey Ramone is high on my waitlist (have her album Little fugitive)
  4:13pm nachurall:

Thank you Sheila b for being a beacon of light in what has been a turd
Avatar 4:14pm djsheilab:

A friend also insisted I watch Topper, so Topper is it! Thanks all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm doctorjazz:

Love this version of Dedicated to the One I Love
  4:17pm JakeGould:

“Fanny and Alexander” is set in Uppsala, Sweden… And WFMU began it’s life at Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. Makes you think.
  4:18pm Joe G.:

As rare as delicious fruitcake, our d.j. finds a way to spin really decent holiday tunes from an ordinarily pedestrian effort by most others on the radio dial. Thank you and happy holidays, Sheila, and to all listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm maestroso:

Alphaville! Volume up!!
Avatar 4:21pm The Contessa:

Thanks @Cecile, We'll watch the Mark Morris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm listener james from westwood:

Hells yes to Alphaville!
Avatar 4:22pm Cecile:

I think you will not be disappointed.
Avatar 4:23pm Cecile:

Waitresses = Tin Huey with a female vocalist and a lot less weird. But still good.
  4:24pm JakeGould:

@Cecile: That is quite a WFMU listener comment right there!
Avatar 4:25pm steve:

i think this is the only good Christmas song i've ever heard played at the supermarket
  4:25pm Peter in Seattle:

God Yul und
Fröhliche Weihnachten Sheila! Can't wait for that Badalamenti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Lizardner Dave:

Where is the think piece talking about how this song is bad because the female protagonist needs a guy to be happy? There's gotta be one somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Parq:

Smiling just at the thought of my first Christmas in New York with a real tree, dollar-store ornaments, and a copy of "Ze Christmas".
Avatar 4:27pm Cecile:

I think because Patty Donahue is singing it, it takes the ook out of it.
  4:27pm JakeGould:

Pretty good interview with Chris Butler on how “Christmas Wrapping” basically broke up “The Waitresses.” But it’s also a really good history of how the band came together. Fave part? How he found Patty Donahue, “Undeterred, he walked into a bar one afternoon and stood on a chair to ask if anyone was up for doing something different. The voice that piped up belonged to Patty Donahue, a 22-year-old waitress working her way through college.”

Avatar 4:28pm Cecile:

Parq, that song was the soundtrack to my first Christmas as a married lady.
  4:29pm JakeGould:

@LizardnerDave: That interview has this quote that kinda addresses what you are saying maybe, “I noticed there were two or three stereotypes of women in music: the hard-rock babe, the sensitive folkie and maybe the black diva. I thought, ‘Where’s the normal working woman? Where’s the female Bruce Springsteen? It seemed pretty natural to build an honest personality that reflected what was going on around me.”
Avatar 4:31pm Cecile:

I thought this track was originally credited to the Crusaders?
Avatar 4:32pm djsheilab:

@Cecile It's a different version.
Avatar 4:33pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello there, all you wonderful people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Adrian in London:

I listened to nigh on 37 – 37!! – James Brown Christmas songs today. I felt about 0.005% more Christmassy at the end of all that…
Avatar 4:34pm Cecile:

I thought she did the vocals on the original?
  4:34pm Listener Robert:

That last piece is one I really got to like under unusual circumstances when I had to listen to it a lot. We had a snowstorm on a Fri. (maybe Thurs.) in Nov., and left work at UMDNJ Newark at noon. when they told us to close. What was usually less than an hour drive to home in the Bronx turned into 6 hrs. during which I nearly ran out of gas twice. I think I had WLIR on because whoever was on your station then on Fri. afternoons I didn't like much. When I got home, I mired my car in a snow bank for the weekend.

Anyway, they had this song in heavy rotation, don't remember how many times I heard it during that drive. I came to love it for its incongruousness, its cleverness, fitting to a march/disco beat a funny story told funnily with all sorts of little tricks in the lyrics to match the beat.

I never knew its right name until I saw it on your playlist now, and the rapping-wrapping ("Christmas Wrapping") pun makes it even funnier. A grand achievement in music composition & prod'n.
  4:34pm JakeGould:

@Ken: Oh… It’s you…
  4:36pm Derek:

Megadeth, lol- just what I was thinking of!

@KenFromHydePark: No new incidents hobos head-butting me. But in the lovely spirit of the season, a mom and child accidentally ran into one nasty neighborhood bum who scream, “What where the fuck you are walking!?!?!?” then sees the kid and says loudly, “Oh… Be nice to your parents!” He was wearing a Santa cap so it was charming.
  4:50pm Joe McG:

  4:57pm Joe McG:

@sb: Never too late! I'll "beg" it from you soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Michael 98145:

From the Interweb: ""Them There Eyes" is a jazz song written by Maceo Pinkard, Doris Tauber and William Tracey. It was published in 1930. One of the early recorded versions was performed by Louis Armstrong in 1931. It was made famous by Billie Holiday, who recorded her version in 1939 on Vocalion Records."

Avatar 5:11pm Cecile:

Loving the Catalunya sounds right now… (The wine is so cheap compared with London. I mean EVERYTHING is cheap compared with London, but that's a given…)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Adrian in London:

Think there's a record shop here called Moby Disk, which is quite promising…
  5:14pm Bob:

Thanks for the NY Times link! I do a mix every three years or so, can never find enough goodies to do them annually. My favourite find this year - The Friendly Beasts by Burl Ives...definitely melancholy.
  5:15pm Listener Robert:

Oh, "Soc Molt Poca Cosa"? I heard it as "Suit of Coca-Cola".
Avatar 5:16pm Linda Lee:

everything about this Anchorsong side is lovely~ & the cover photo is just fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Michael 98145:

@Adrian, we loved Spain and Portugal. great people, wine less expensive than water. what's not to love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Dano59:

Salome (I've always wanted to date a Salome) sounds a lot like Eartha!!

Since about 15 years we have a Top 2000 in The Netherlands (starts on 1st Christmas Day and ends on the 31st of december) with the 2000 favorite songs of the Dutch! Not my choice. 2000 Chris Rea's

Rob, you were given a list to vote on?
Avatar 5:45pm Linda Lee:

Kinks always fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Rob Kopp:

Yes. You could choose 15 songs from that list and add 10 others yourself (I think)
  5:46pm nick26:

Hey Sheila! Merry Christmas! Your show today has been a great mood lightener and Season's seasoning. You mentioned Spirited Away- my fave is Princess Mononoke- more textured story. Most of the rest are great, too. Have a good one.
