Hello gang! I've 93.7% recovered from my illness + am SO psyched to be here!
Avatar 3:03pm The Contessa:

Good evening from a cold and dark London, Miss Sheila B!
  3:03pm P-90:

今日は いかがおすごしでしょうか? Time to go Boom Boom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Adrian in London:

Good evening Sheila and Sophisticates, I'm hoping tonight's show will include photos of Japanese goats
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:05pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Sheila and all! Glad you're mostly feeling better, and thanks for the kind shout-out last show (I listened via the magic of the archives)!
Avatar 3:05pm statoj:

Hello, Sheilab! We will try to kick that last 6.3% to the curb with all the good music and good vibes. So glad it is Friday!
  3:07pm modchick65:

Hi Sheila! The good news... I've been psyched for this all day. The bad news... I think I may be getting whatever you had. Is something going around NYC? Or maybe just among people with exquisite taste in music?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Carmichael:

Heya Sheila and others. That first song was indeed bouncy.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Rick from SC:

Beautiful song. Love the show
  3:07pm modchick65:

This Holly Macve song reminds me of Angel Olsen.
Avatar 3:07pm The Contessa:

Holly is SUCH a glamour puss
Avatar 3:08pm statoj:

2105? Sheila has arrived in the Tardis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Adrian in London:

Oh wow, Holly Macve! She's SOOO good. We saw her at Daylight Music at Union Chapel a few weeks ago here n London and she was spellbinding. Can't wait for her album next year.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Guido from Cologne:

hello sheila
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Guido from Cologne:

Thought this is a new Angel Olson
Avatar 3:09pm djsheilab:

Hehehe....@statoj I can't anything past you guys!
Avatar 3:10pm statoj:

My bad. I work as an editor. Let me take off my Hat!
  3:11pm Mark R.:

This Holly Macve track is really cool. However do you come upon a self-released bedroom demo? Did you record it in the bedroom yourself?
  3:12pm modchick65:

Hall & Oates. Fyeah. Philly in the house.
Avatar 3:12pm statoj:

Hall & Oates is always soooo welcome!
  3:12pm Mark R.:

OMG I was doing a fill-in a few months ago and I mentioned that Hall & Oates were a guilty pleasure of mine. I played something from a tribute album by the Bird & the Bee.
  3:12pm JakeGould:

Whoa! Going deep on the Hall and Oates!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Afternoon, Sheila and all!
Avatar 3:13pm The Contessa:

Always loved them! No guilt!
Avatar 3:13pm djsheilab:

Hey @Adrian + @The Contessa! You two know about every single up-and-coming act, dontcha? : )
Avatar 3:14pm djsheilab:

This Hall & Oates album is my favorite of theirs hands down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm common:

lovin' this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Adrian in London:

@djsheilab Well, y'know, London… ;-) Holly's signed to Bella Union, incidentally.
  3:15pm modchick65:

I could have seen Hall & Oates on the H2O tour, but my dad wouldn't take me. :(
  3:16pm JakeGould:

The actual knocking sound on this track is creepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm common:

i saw them on that tour. my first concert. pretty great.
Avatar 3:16pm The Contessa:

He's no dad!
Avatar 3:16pm djsheilab:

Awwwww....@modchick65 I feel your pain! What a gig to miss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Adrian in London:

This sketch from Big Train sort of ruined Hall & Oates for me www.youtube.com...
  3:18pm modchick65:

@The Contessa... he wouldn't take me to Live Aid, either, but he did take me to see my 5th grade boyfriend, Rick Springfield on the Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet tour the night before my 11th birthday, so I can't really complain. At all. :)
Avatar 3:19pm djsheilab:

@Mark R. That Bird & the Bee tribute is brill. You can hear how much Hall & Oates have influenced their latest record.
Avatar 3:19pm The Contessa:

@modchick65 You're too generous!
Avatar 3:24pm statoj:

More people should sing shoobeedoo these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm northguineahills:

I have a soft spot for "It's a Shame About Ray".
Avatar 3:26pm Baumer!:

I have such a soft spot for this album. Great pick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm northguineahills:

Near simulpost!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm listener james from westwood:

That Holly Macve cut was quite lovely; my first star of the day and likely not my last!
Avatar 3:39pm statoj:

"J'ai rendez-vous" = I gave it to you? (Where is my translater?)
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Gaylord Fields:

@djsheilab: I missed some good stuff — but knowing that equally good stuff is coming mitigates that loss. (Also, archives.)

  3:44pm JakeGould:

Nice! Listening to Shirley Ellis last night.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Gaylord Fields:

Once again, poor Chuck gets excluded from The Name Game through no fault of his own!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm JtotheK:

Hi everyone! I missed out tuning in to the live broadcast the past few weeks, glad to be here today. Haven't listened to this Shirley Ellis in a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm maestroso:

Hi djsheilab, I've got to say hello before drive time...Hello! Will be listening on radio in car
Avatar 3:47pm Baumer!:

Every time i hear this I always hope that a Chuck will slip in there somehow. This also reminded me of the Clapping Song, which Tom Waits takes lines from in Clap Hands which always intrigued me.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@djsheilab: My favorite '60s Brit girl single — "While I'm Still Young," by Yvonne!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm JtotheK:

The Shirley Ellis 'soul time' is really great, too.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm JtotheK:

@sheilab -- I looked at the playlist from 2 weeks ago you spun ann margret 'someday soon', neil sedaka 'too late', and tom jones 'looking out my window' -- props! Especially for that Sedaka.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm listener james from westwood:

Diggin' the Chairlift!
  3:54pm JakeGould:

Do I hear holiday bells?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm JtotheK:

I have a soft spot for the pop star 45s that cross over to the northern/popcorn scene... another good one is Andy Williams 'house of bamboo' ... and my personal fave Paul Anka 'I Can't Help Loving You'. And I'm trying to find the Boots Randolph northern 45...and the Glenn Yarbrough northern 45. And recently found the Streisand northern 45...finally!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Guido from Cologne:

Something I have
good old barry White production
  3:56pm sharon g:

Smashing Time - one of my FAVORITE movies! Your selections, mixes, and segues are really good. I used to have a women's arts show on WBAI - wish I had had your library back then.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@djsheilab: One Halloween, Kathleen dressed up perfectly as the made-over-for-pop-stardom Yvonne from Smashing Time — literally no one knew who she was supposed to be! I was so proud of her!
Avatar 3:56pm Baumer!:

Oh man loving this track!
Avatar 3:58pm Baumer!:

Since the topic did come up today, I am curious what the most expensive record ever played on WFMU is.
Avatar 3:59pm The Contessa:

Look at their boots!
Avatar 3:59pm statoj:

Sharon g- yes! I love Rita Tushingham. She hasn't had many lighthearted moments in her movies so Smashing Time is kinda unique.
  4:00pm JakeGould:

@Baumer!: I would guess that Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass LP, “Whipped Cream and Other Delights” right?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm listener james from westwood:

melisma = miasma!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm JtotheK:

@JakeGould - that, or Leo Sayer 'endless flight'...
Avatar 4:02pm The Contessa:

I hate the over singing/shouting. Whitney was so good at it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm common:

i love the cover of that record, jake. used to stare at it a lot when i was a lad.
Avatar 4:03pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

I call it "star search" singing - which was the show that was the "modern" precursor to all the current talent shows on TV. EVERY singer had to do the crazy oversinging.
  4:04pm JakeGould:

@common: That’s why it’s worth so much money.
  4:04pm sharon g:

Have you ever heard "Doing It Wrong" by Anita Blay? It was the theme song to a BBC TV show called Some Girls (great show, GREAT song). I think you would dig it.
  4:04pm Mark R.:

I agree with you about melisma--but I'm OK with Aretha doing it. I just think she's the only one allowed to do it. I still think"Dr. Feelgood" and "I Never Loved A Man" are some of the most amazing pop/soul songs ever recorded. Actually, between 1967-72 she could do no wrong imo. But "Sweet Bitter Love" is cool, too, and like so many records you play, I hadn't heard it before! You've turned me on to a lot of cool tuneage.
  4:08pm sugarplum fairywolf:

I love Smashing Time!
Avatar 4:08pm David Shortell:

I remember Now & Then Records in Hazlet had multiple copies of the Smashing Time soundtrack. I wonder if they ever sold any? I also wonder if anybody truly thought that movie was funny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm common:

@jake: wish i still had it.
  4:09pm sugarplum fairywolf:

Did anyone watch The Wiz last night (speaking of melisma)
Avatar 4:09pm statoj:

Some Girls? No, but I will look it up for sure. Thanks!
  4:09pm JakeGould:

@common: You are pretty much open $1 bin away from your dreams.
  4:10pm JakeGould:

Little Cindy sounds creepy. Has she seen a therapist?
Avatar 4:11pm Baumer!:

DJ Duo Zed's Dead put heart rate monitors on some of their fans at a show and recorded the results. I wonder what would happen if that was done to us listening to Sophisticated Boom Boom.

Avatar 4:11pm The Contessa:

@JakeGould Agreed!
Avatar 4:12pm statoj:

No movie with Rita Tushingham is truly funny. She brings a sadness with her wherever she goes.
Avatar 4:14pm David Shortell:

That's certainly true of "Girl with Green Eyes"--which also co-starred Lynn Redgrave!
Avatar 4:14pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

It's those eyes.
Avatar 4:17pm statoj:

Green Eyes was part 2 of the same adventure (also w/ Tushingham) but it REALLY was not a comedy. I liked Smashing Time better.
Avatar 4:18pm djsheilab:

My Doris CD failed on me : (
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Adrian in London:

Like this Cathy Claret, it's Filles Sourires-esque.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Guido from Cologne:

on WFMU you never know if it is a corrupted CD your audio player collapsing or an edit intended to sound like this.
Avatar 4:20pm statoj:

This proves you are playing real records! (Sort of the Velveteen Rabbit test. :)
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Guido from Cologne:

I thought it was sm-Ken guest deejaying 4 a moment
Avatar 4:22pm statoj:

I meant "real CD's..."
Avatar 4:22pm djsheilab:

@statoj this is true! I couldn't bear to play off my laptop. I use it for a few new mp3s but it's much easier for me to use records + CDs with the hell that is iTunes.
  4:31pm modchick65:

Ack. Just missed this entire set. I'll be listening to it on Monday!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:32pm JtotheK:

if you have a spare $400 to spend on Susan Barrett 45s, look for "What's It Gonna Be" on RCA.
  4:32pm modchick65:

That quote book your dad created sounds really sweet. I bet he would have taken you to the Hall & Oates H2O tour. :)
  4:34pm modchick65:

I don't agree with the late '00s vs the late '90s quote at all. There's a lot of it. I really don't like much 90s music. It's much better now.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Guido from Cologne:

I was at a Simon Reynolds reading and I had the impression, it's just another lamenting about pop loosing it's "revolutionary" relevance.
Avatar 4:37pm djsheilab:

@JtotheK Have been looking for that for years. No joy!
Avatar 4:41pm statoj:

What amazes me is I spent the early 60s listening to 3 or 4 hours of New York radio "hit" station each night and I never heard of 80% of the artists that sheila plays from the 60s on this show . was I in the wrong town? I grew up believing NY was the center of the universe. (Luckily I lived long enough to learn about the Big World of music out there, thanks to Sheilab!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Adrian in London:

Ooh, this Yearning track is lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Ye Ye! - I is home & it be Friday...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Adrian in London:

Hey Sheila, aren't you hosting a club night tonight? Looks great.
Avatar 4:50pm djsheilab:

The first official "enka" song (traditional Japanese blues) I've played on my show.
Avatar 4:50pm djsheilab:

@Adrian Yup! 9 hours of DJing for me today : )
Avatar 4:53pm TDK60:

Statoj: not the wrong town. Even though radio was diverse back then, it was still a top 40 or 100, if AM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm common:

me too, rev rabbit! yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Adrian in London:

@djsheilab I know it's a common name but is Fuyumi Nakamoto related to with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Akiko Yano?
Avatar 4:56pm statoj:

One wonders how all these bands sold any records if they got no airplay. There was no internet, just a lot of touring I guess.
Avatar 4:57pm statoj:

Steve Karmwn- what river is he talking about?
Avatar 4:57pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

I've bought records that were never sold in stores, only on the road. Just a few hundred copies existed.
Avatar 4:58pm Aly Dukes:

Word of mouth probably played a big role.
Avatar 4:58pm statoj:

Oh my god- wig wam bam - this was in that Irish movie with Stephen Rea!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm common:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

That's what I love about FMU. I've never heard of most music played here. My batting average is about .090 ...
Avatar 4:59pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Lots of groups made money playing, money spent recording and making records was simply meant as PR. Not many bands make off of concert money these days!
Avatar 5:00pm statoj:

I think the movie was Shoot the Moon. The characters did a live version. Of the song.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Carmichael:

This sing is from The Sweet originally.

Avatar 5:15pm Todd-o-phonic:

Tim Gane's new band is actually pretty good. Sort of Stereolabby, but that's a good thing.

@TOPT Cindy Cole was Jeannie from Jeannie & the Big Guys!

@djsheilab: I actually agree with his premise in Retromania quite strongly — I'm just not on board with his conclusion that popular music must go forward to be enjoyable. (Full disclosure: I used to work alongside Simon at a music magazine, and think he's a really good thinker and writer both.)
Avatar 5:27pm statoj:

I must go. See you all next Friday!

And I look to music for enjoyment, not cultural progress.

@The Contessa - Hi, how are things in your area tonight? It's a balmy evening north of New York City here. I was at a work event earlier and just tuned in.

  5:41pm HWYUNI:

that was the best song transition ever
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Carmichael:

Contrary to popular belief, the Parsons Project was not a bunch of studio musicians. In addition to Eric Woolfson and Parsons, the nucleus of the band was Ian Bairnson, David Paton and Stuart Tosh (all from the band Pilot, which Parsons produced). All but Tosh (replaced by Stuart Elliott from Cockney Rebel) remained through the last album Gaudi, and even into the all-but-in-name album fiasco Freudiana.

@sugarplum fairywolf: Is a Baby Birkin like a Baby Bjorn, but it retails for $50,000?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Carmichael:

Is Ricky Wilde related to Kim Wilde, or Marty for that matter?
