hello Sheila & everyone!

Hey boom-boomers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm SeanG:

Hi Sheila! I'm ready for the show.
Avatar 3:06pm djsheilab:

Hey @Baumer! + @Guido + @SeanG + boom-boomers far and wide!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm SeanG:

this is my new favorite song Sheila!
Avatar 3:08pm djsheilab:

I'm late to the Grimes table, but really digging what I've heard so far!
Avatar 3:10pm drewo:

Happy Friday! Love the new Grimes too! It's positively addictive. Check out the Fader magazine video-doc with Claire just out.
Avatar 3:10pm djsheilab:

@drewo! I am honoring your request last week in just a bit : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Adrian in London:

Blimey! Chris Rea?! This is almost Teesside yacht rock! Nt sure they have yachts n Middlesborough
  3:13pm modchick:

Wow, that IS the epitome of adult contemporary! Would we also classify this as Yacht Rock? It has that yacht rock gloss. Thoughts?
Avatar 3:14pm djsheilab:

@Adrian in London Chris Rea is part of my DNA thanks to my dad. I do love this song!
  3:14pm Cooh John:

Hello djsheilab and fellow boom boomers. Let the weekend commence.
Avatar 3:14pm djsheilab:

So is this what Yacht Rock is? I was never clear about that term. What else is Yacht Rock?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Carmichael:

Boom! Slide the "smooth" control up to 11!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Adrian in London:

It's got a yacht rock feel to it to me. Your dad was into Chris Rea? I once saw the movie Chris rea made, about a boy who wanted a Ferrari or something. Shirley bassey wa in it. *whispers* It was;t very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm SeanG:

this is hot massage rock
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Carmichael:

Loggins & Messina, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates, Toto. All Yacht Rockers.
Avatar 3:17pm The Contessa:

Good evening Sheila and everyone else, too
Avatar 3:18pm djsheilab:

Oh my....describing Chris Rea as "hot massage rock" So right, yet so wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Adrian in London:

@Carmichael Yeah, anything that you can imagine being overly tanned to and swooping around the Med in the mid 1970s to. Without socks.

Avatar 3:19pm djsheilab:

So the entire video for Duran Duran's "Rio?" @Adrian?

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm JtotheK:

hi everyone! i'll be tuning in via the app (mostly) today - great version of 'Fever' to start off, hadn't heard that before...
Avatar 3:20pm Aly Dukes:

What would you listen to if you were Leo DiCap in Wolf of Wall Street?
  3:22pm sugarplum fairywolf:

Duran Duran's music is not yacht rock though.
  3:22pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Adrian in London:

@djsheilab More mid to late 70s. Think Cinzano ads.
Avatar 3:22pm The Contessa:

Any silver boots this week?
  3:22pm JakeGould:

And on a serious note, nice Chantal Goya track you played back there.

  3:33pm modchick:

Yacht rock is like obscenity. You know it when you see (hear) it! :)
Avatar 3:33pm Baumer!:

Does Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street count as yacht rock?
  3:33pm βrian:

What comments board?
  3:34pm βrian:

I always confuse Yacht Rock with Yat Kha.
Avatar 3:34pm Aly Dukes:

"First, tell me your name" I think. "D'abord" is kind of confusing me.
Avatar 3:34pm drewo:

  3:35pm JakeGould:

Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" counts as awesome.
  3:35pm modchick:

Gerry Rafferty is totally Yacht Rock.
  3:36pm Dean:

A buddy of mine layered multiple instances of "Baker Street" using an LP with an eccentric hole. If it's yacht rock, the seas are stormy.
Avatar 3:36pm Baumer!:

It is awesome @JakeGould
  3:37pm Mark R:

I love Stereolab so much...there was about a year there where I listened to them just about every day. I have a video of my daughter falling asleep in a baby swing to one of their songs...
Avatar 3:40pm The Contessa:

Oh, Glass! Divine!!
Avatar 3:41pm The Contessa:

The video to this track is AMAZING!
  3:41pm Adrian in London:

Stereolab are definitely not yacht rock. They are, however, a nightmare if you're a collector. They put out so many coloured vinyl sevens and limited editions.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Wasn't the Captain and Tennille the 70s yacht rock? Maybe they were muskrat rock. It was years ago.
Avatar 3:41pm djsheilab:

Glass courtesy of @The Contessa + @Adrian in London. I friggin' LOVE this duo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Howdy Boob-Boom. When I think about my early FMU listening days, Stereolab comes to mind.
Avatar 3:42pm The Contessa:

Er, we must give @Adrian in London the credit! Thanks from him
Avatar 3:43pm djsheilab:

And for Stereolab to sustain such a high level of quality for so many years...that's a feat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm KevinfromBayRidge:

EEKS!!!! Meant Boom-Boom... Can't blame it Auto-Suggest!
Avatar 3:44pm βrian:

Unlike RadioLab, dear me.
  3:44pm JakeGould:

"Captain and Tennill"e are awesome as well.

Hahaha! Boobs are much appreciated on "Boom Boom." Not to worry @KevinfromBayRidge : )

Think about birds, no doubt, Kevin:
Avatar 3:46pm Baumer!:

Really dug that Glass track! I'm going to have to check them out.
  3:47pm Adrian in London:

@Kevin Read on Twitter today that some troll had accused a journalist of not caring if parts of London were subject to Sharia law, except autocorrect had changed it to Shania Twain!
  3:47pm Mark R:

I honestly never heard this term "Yacht Rock" before.
Avatar 3:48pm Baumer!:

My introduction to Dionne Warwick was as a child when she hosted Solid Gold and I think did some life insurance commercials for seniors. So later in life, I was shocked to discover just how good her music was.
Avatar 3:48pm Aly Dukes:

That's because it was made up today in this comments section
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Guess I unconsciously had your show description("female-fronted pop")on my indecent mind!
  3:50pm Mark R:

1) There are no parts of London subject to Shariah law. It's like a hypothetical "What if spiders had guns?" construct by the crackpots 2) Shania Twain is going to be my wife some day, and she can do anything she wants. so watch your filthy mouth!
  3:50pm Adrian in London:

@AlyDukes Nah, yacht rock's a thing, honest. Mind you, I only found out about vaporwave yesterday.
Avatar 3:50pm djsheilab:

@Baumer! Solid Gold was my intro to Dionne Warwick too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Thanks for covering for me, Brian!
  3:51pm Mark R:

There really should be an iPhone app that dings and alerts me when these things like yacht rock and vaporwave come along. Just so I don't go, you know, totally squaresville, daddy-o.

Today's SBB special: Yacht Rock + Boobs!
Avatar 3:52pm Chris M.:

  3:52pm Dean:

Yer all kids. My intro to Dionne was her work with Burt Bacharach way back in the '60s.
  3:52pm Mark R:

Only it seems that yacht rock alert would have gone off in 1979.
Avatar 3:52pm djsheilab:

@Chris M. Right back atcha!
Avatar 3:52pm Baumer!:

@djsheilab you're the first person I have talked to who seems to remember Solid Gold! Not that Solid Gold comes up that often in casual conversation, but more than one would suspect.
Avatar 3:52pm Aly Dukes:

Trying to make a funny, but thanks for the bg info on yacht rock!
  3:54pm Mark R:

I remember Solid Gold (I think). It was syndicated and I think they showed it on Saturday afternoons when no one was home.
  3:55pm modchick:

Solid Gold should totally come up in conversation. How does no one else remember that? Saturday night at 6pm (or wast it 7pm). Remember the dancer with the long braid who would dramatically lay all over everything?
Avatar 3:56pm Baumer!:

I have hazy recollections of it, but I could have sworn it was an NBC show on Saturday Nights for awhile, and then in the later years NBC dropped it and it switched to syndication? Or maybe it was in syndication all along. Man the things I remember from being a kid is weird haha.
  3:57pm modchick:

I am having absolutely no success listening to this show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Mike Sin:

Moseying around upstairs here in Jersey City and enjoying the show very much.
Avatar 3:59pm Aly Dukes:

Too young fro Solid Gold. Soul Train was still a thing when I was a kid though. It was right after Saturday morning cartoons too. X-Men, Batman, Gargoyles, then dance around to Diana Ross or TLC. Good stuff.
  4:00pm Ted:

Shelia....Sloan made probably their best record of their career a few years ago, The Double Cross...check out.
Avatar 4:01pm Baumer!:

Soul Train was pretty awesome too.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm listener james from westwood:

Watched a lot of Solid Gold and Dance Fever as a kid. With the occasional Battle of the Network Stars. Victoria Principal registered for me early.
  4:03pm JakeGould:

Pretty sure "Solid Gold" was always syndicated. That and "Soul Train" were the cool music shows on syndication.
  4:03pm modchick:

DARLENE. LOVE. She is amazing to see live. Fabulous.
  4:03pm Adrian in London:

I have a Stereolab jigsaw puzzle coaster.
Avatar 4:03pm The Contessa:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm northguineahills:

I used to love Sloan, but the album I listened to around 2005 was rather meh. Haven't tried their new stuff since, will look at the latest,

@Neil, yeah I do prefer when they were Slowdive. But this track's lovely.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:17pm listener james from westwood:

Whoa, where the hell was I in '95 when this came out? Glad to hear it now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Adrian in London:

Simon Scott, the drummer from Slowdive, does some lovely ambient/field recording/experimental records.
  4:19pm Eager Beaver:

I had to check the listing because I wondered why I hadn't heard this Cowboy Junkies song before.
  4:19pm modchick:

I didn't listen to Mojave 3 back in the day, but I feel like I saw them at CMJ. Isn't that terrible? I can't even remember. This track is really nice.
  4:20pm Dean:

First heard Mojave 3 on WFMU, and now I have pretty much their entire catalog, not counting EPs, singles, etc. Really happy to have discovered them, and I do like Slowdive, but I give the nod to the later group.
Avatar 4:20pm βrian:

Indeed. Where's Margo?
  4:23pm nEIL cOMMA wILD:

I am also a total sucker for sixties era twangy guitars (like Telecasters)

@Joe McG Isn't it a stormer? I wish she made more 60s Japanese beat records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Adrian in London:

Ooh, love Faye Wong, but I've only really heard that album Simon and Robin from the Cocteau twins produced. And she's great in Chungking Express, of course.
Avatar 4:37pm Baumer!:

I'm going to track that Faye Wong album down.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm listener james from westwood:

Holy Christmas, glad nobody was hurt in the accident!
Avatar 4:42pm Jeff:

No!!! Spotify makes terrible software which keeps breaking our computers!

And it refuses to remember that you've told it not to start every time you log in, and it doesn't give you the option not to apply updates (which re-break a setup you might just have gotten stable).

We really need to find some alternative to Spotify. I'd like to eradicate it from the station. Anybody have suggestion?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:44pm JtotheK:

great cookies 45!
Avatar 4:45pm Baumer!:

I have so much rare stuff in my itunes library i can't break away and use Spotify full time. I also don't like how they went away from a desktop app to a web interface. I feel a bit defeated where I have just backed up all my local files, deleted them and just use Match/Apple Music. Apple Music is basically just for adding what songs I can find from this show at this point haha
  4:46pm marc15:

I was almost killed in a car accident because the driver was texting and driving. She ran a stop sign and hit my car into the lane of oncoming traffic. I was injured badly
Avatar 4:48pm djsheilab:

@Marc15 That is awful. Texting and driving is rampant. And I don't know what it's gonna take for people to learn just how dangerous it is. I definitely learned my lesson last week and am SO lucky no one got hurt.
Avatar 4:48pm Aly Dukes:

I've found a lot of stuff on Spotify that I hadn't found anywhere else. I hadn't synced my ipod in 5 years and when I tried this past summer, iTunes deleted 7 years or accumulated music. I wept all night and swore I would never use iTunes again.
  4:48pm killerz:

i know, ppl who do that should be ashamed of themselves. kids could die
Avatar 4:49pm Jeff:

@βrian: there's no need to use iTunes even for that - VLC is a fine choice for listening to streams. Way more lightweight than iTunes, and not prone to those sudden user-interface redesigns which always seem to be aimed at pushing a product or service to the front rather than serving users.

  4:49pm mg:

sorry/not sorry, love causing a commotion
Avatar 4:50pm Stephanie:

Hi Sheila!!
Avatar 4:51pm djsheilab:

@Stephanie! So nice to see you here.
Avatar 4:52pm Baumer!:

I do most of my WFMU listening through the radio app on the 3rd generation Apple TV. The rest I do through the iOS app on the go.
Avatar 4:54pm Jeff:

For those who miss when iTunes was a good way to index your own music you had physically on your own computer... note that several formerly-iTunes-using DJs with gigantic collections of music have been migrating to JRiver Media Center:

Media Center's main difficulty is that it probably just does too much stuff, so the interface can seem a little complicated, but people get used to it, and come to trust the software more than iTunes. And you can configure it to show less stuff.

Available for Mac OS, Windows and Linux. The visual design is still a little bit uncomfortably Windows-y on other platforms because Windows is where it originated, but the Mac port is now solidly usable.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jeff - Ditto for VLC. That thing gives me no problems. I haven't messed with Spotify, but I have used Google Play Music on my Android phone. I searched "Hallogallo" and it played it and a bunch of other songs that are similar to it, which was what I wanted that day.
Avatar 4:57pm Aly Dukes:

Is winamp still a thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...geez - what is all this...maybe I'm lucky (sorta - in a way) in having old computers that won't update newer versions of iTunes ??
...Somebody took up WinAmp & saved it.
Avatar 4:58pm Baumer!:

I think they recently went out of business?
Avatar 4:59pm Jeff:

A lotta people swear by Winamp, and keep using hoarded copies of it it steadily.

The original project got shut down and there have been no new updates in quite awhile, but I understand there are efforts underway to revive it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but I don't think they're updating WinAmp again yet, or supporting anything related to it...

You can still stream w/ WinAmp - but I think the lack of updates & support shows up in little ways - like the stream addresses staying listed, rather than station names (?) - which is awkward interface. I always liked you could choose skins & such...
I'm fine now w/ iTunes to do all audio in one place (streams, lists, podcasts, iPod programming/loading) - so I hope I don't update it one day to Horrors you all speak of...

@northguineahills That Vannier track gives me chills every time.
Avatar 5:15pm djsheilab:

@Jeff thanks for all the computer tips. I'm still completely lost and only just switched over to Spotify for new songs. Cos the new iTunes is HELL. Will read over all your advice properly after my show.
Avatar 5:16pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Who needs a frigging computer when you've got LaBrenda Ben?!!?
Avatar 5:17pm Aly Dukes:

This is the jam!

@djsheilab: Colin Blunstone's most gorgeous song out of too many to choose from!
Avatar 5:18pm djsheilab:

Haha! @TOPT I think we should resume the boob conversation from earlier.
Avatar 5:18pm djsheilab:

@Gaylord AGREED. It is perfection. Lucky Caroline Munro. Although he does go a bit over-board with the self-pity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if I were singing about breaking up w/ Caroline Munro - I don't think it would be that graceful...
Avatar 5:20pm djsheilab:

All of life's important messages in this single song!

Ruh-ro. Is that a chinchilla hat on Colin Blunstone?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:23pm chris:

Avatar 5:28pm Baumer!:

Avatar 5:29pm djsheilab:

Thank you @Linda Lee!
  5:31pm MONEYBAG$:

at a rare Versus show, I stole the setlist before they came out for an encore, so they played this song instead of whatever they originally planned, which was a big step up
Avatar 5:31pm djsheilab:

Excellent work @Moneybag$.
Avatar 5:31pm Aly Dukes:

Thank you for taking me through the end of my 10 hour shift today, Sheila. It's the perfect combo of tired, excited, beautiful, and mild pissed-offedness
  5:33pm Linda Lee:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Gaylord Fields:

If I recall the story, Colin was upset that she put her career ahead of him, or some such silliness. I mean: Look. At. Her. www.google.com...
Avatar 5:34pm Aly Dukes:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Adrian in London:

Hey Jeff, any chance of coming to south London and fixing my fried Time Machine?! Man, El Capitan has turned my laptop into a snail, and one that's in a bad mood at that.

Ketty Lester, 'west coast' on Tower is a cool tune, too. And she has a few northern 45s on RCA...
Avatar 5:50pm The Contessa:

@Linda Lee I can reveal it was at a party…
Avatar 5:50pm Jeff:

@Adrian - it's been far too long since I was last in Souf London, but I ain't fixing no computers there.

If you're experiencing a crippling surplus of bitter and Cuban cigars, though, I could see popping over to do my bit to help.
  5:53pm P-90:

If Seven Second Delay was the classy show it desperately doesn't want to be, this would be a cool theme
