The gelatin printing method was called a Hectograph. Yes, I'm a nerd.
  9:26pm P-90:

Note for those on board whose interests straddle the worlds of Dave Emory and efd: these copying machines were ALL against the law to own in the Soviet Union, because no unauthorized/controlled publishing was allowed
Avatar 9:28pm InBrkly:

ahh rexograph. sweet memories of grade school.
Avatar 9:28pm Holly in NC:

I have the 1985 2nd print edition of TP guide RIGHT HERE. Also website bookmarked on my toolbar, also right here:-)

BTW, I was a total brown-nose in 1st grade, solely so I could use the ditto machine. Purple dust yes yes yes... mash up with rubber cement! ;-0

re TP bands: I first discovered Trouser Press maybe 10 years ago searching google for Tragic Mulatto. It was the only result.

Congratulations on being WFMU show number 55555. What is that called, a quintefecta?
  9:31pm P-90:

Avatar 9:31pm Joe B:

great to hear him mention the Yardbirds - great liner notes from Mr. Robbins in the late 90s Roger the Engineer re-ish
Avatar 9:31pm InBrkly:

Why didnt TP become the way better version of allmusic?
  9:33pm P-90:

I remember that first Elvis Costello interview!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm fleep:

Futile debates? You've come to the right place.
  9:37pm Toddophonic:

Please ask Ira if he knows what is up with Joseph Custom Tailor.
  9:38pm P-90:

Lorde's passing through a stage that every artist goes through when they first become big enough to get wide coverage, and have to come to terms with the fact that they can't control what's written about them...oh well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm joe:

I was just flipping through the covers of TP and I would venture to say they probably covered more King Crimson then any other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm fleep:

No "Hot For Teacher" by Thundertrain this set? Don't tell me you don't have that 45 Evan!
  9:45pm Robin Eisgrau:

Ah, Ira Robbins and Evan "Funk" Davies -- two favorite men of mine on one of my favorite shows on my favorite radio station. Ira what's the most important album of the Trouser Press era? and please play "Starry Eyes" by The Records xo Robin
  9:45pm P-90:

@ fleep; yup- she's only seventeen, she'll learn;
remember John Lennon said the same thing, "they wanna put you up in a tree or on a pedestal, and then all they wanna do is throw rocks at you and try to take you down" --but that's the game
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm joe:

My theory is
There are those who want to make music and those that want to make it in music. The two have nothing to do with one another and are in no way mutually exclusive. Anybody can do the first one because it is completely based on personal satisfaction. The second can have many levels of achievement but it has to be understood that in some way even in the smallest sense you are at the mercy of your "audience/critic" in turn making what you create only part of the over all package.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm efd:

Todd, I have it at home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm efd:

side note: The cover of the "Hot For Teacher" 45 was shot in a classroom of my high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm joe:

@Toddophonic here you go in case you have to scratch the itch right away. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Alex of Chicago:

  9:51pm li'l funk:

I wore out one copy of TPRG and put a ton of miles on a second copy too. It was my favorite thing to read when I had some, oh, let's call it down time. For many years I carried around in my wallet a list of albums I thought I'd like based on TP reviews, and I'd pull it out whenever I was in a used record/tape store. I'll never forget the thrill of finding the Lightning Seeds' "Jollification" in a little shop in Lansing, Michigan-- and it's still one of my favorites. TP also led me to another of my all-time bands, E*I*E*I*O (and its offshoot Semi-Twang). Thanks, Ira!
  9:52pm P-90:

@ joe: yeah, like most artists, someone like Lorde is basically a control freak, and they always have to learn this lesson that their reception by their own audience and especially by the press is just NOT something they have complete control over, it's a paradox they've got to learn to live with
  9:52pm ira robbins:

gret choices -- glad to be of service
Avatar 9:53pm Holly in NC:

@Ira - no disrespect intended, I searched out any/everything you & your staff wrote about, and y'all really did change my life. Differing tastes are fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm joe:

I love the fact that the Power Pop fest has now made it to 3 different places. Asbury Park to NYC to Brooklyn at this rate by 2016 it should be in Boston.
Avatar 9:59pm Holly in NC:

Quote from random page drop (p. 261 )

Then we bend down and smell your feet

Mark Shipper put out 2 issues of Flash and one issue of a parody fanzine called Brain Damage.
  10:07pm Eddy in Australia:

We got TP in Melbourne, too (later issues anyway). 'Back to Mimeo' badges for all! This is great listening, Evan. And I second the request for 'Starry Eyes.'
  10:07pm P-90:

Those microfilm readers do make you dizzy- the pages "spin" by, also there's a strobing effect on your retina that gets really freaky after a few hours
10:12pm Michael from the Left Coast:

I love it a Mark Shipper reference! I'm emailing him now.
Please say hi to Ira and I will listen to the rest from the archive.

  10:28pm Eddy in Australia:

EFD: I'd love to hear Ira's take on the relevant music from down here. I'm thinking of bands like The Riptides, first album-era Scientists, maybe the poppier end of the Birdman scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm joe:

Ira is there one band that you guys really had a thing for at TP but for some reason just never caught on. Kind of the TP secret band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm joe:

even with fanatics
  10:33pm Jay:

Ira your enthusiasm for and knowledge of quality rock music after all this time is amazing! You should have your own radio show (sorry Evan lol).
  10:41pm johnk77:

  10:42pm Mark Brown:

Ira and Trouser Press published my first two paid music articles, and off of those two clips I got a career. Ira is a god.

  10:54pm ira robbins:

as ypu should, steve! time to relive the past
  10:54pm Jim Allen:

I bought the Trees album precisely on account of the TP recommendation, and I love it to this day. A shame there was never a follow-up, though I've looked up Dane Conover online and I believe he has made music subsequently.
  10:59pm Carmichael:

11:23pm Eric the Half a Bee:

OMG, EFD, I haven't heard this Bonzo Dog Band piece in probably decades! Awesome! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm pacific standard simon:

Well whose fault is THAT, boyo?
  11:32pm Camilla:

Hey, Ira, I met you at Andy Shernoff's first solo gig a few years ago at a tiny club in the East Village. For the record, you published my gushing 15-year-old groupie-girl missive re: The New York Dolls in your 4th issue. At the time, I picked up TOTP at a place in Poughkeepsie called The Record Lover, owned by a lovely man, Gary Danna, who was a friend of mine. I used to help him out in the store sometimes on weekends when I was visiting upstate. Thanks for the great mag, Ira, and Happy 40th! PS: So cool that Dwight Twilley is playing for you this weekend. I am glad to hear he's still at it! I only know his first two records, but we loved them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm jmd:

Residents b/w Cheap Trick! Terrific!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm pacific standard simon:

I used to pick up my issues of Trouser Press at Rather Ripped Records in Berkeley, along with the Krautrock zine. The Residents records would stare at us from the rack in silent reproach.
  11:37pm Drawmark:

This is like being in my room in the 70s playing records on the floor and thumbing thru Trouser Press. Thanks Guys. Gonna go slather Clearasil on my face and argue with my parents now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm pacific standard simon:

Seems reasonable, "Funk".
  11:40pm JakeGould:

Trouser Press? Thhbbbt! That is for old fogies! I am totally into “Deluxe Digital Pants Press” I jack-into that e-pub every day! www.sharperimage.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm Jann Wenner:

Shouldn't be friends with bands?! BLASPHEMY!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm joe:

I went to see Cheap trick about 7 years ago when someone gave me free tickets. I went being a fan of the band but not a super huge fan. I walked out that night speechless and with my mouth hanging open. To this day one of the best shows I have ever seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm eyenoise:

Thanks for asking about the flexi discs, EFD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm eyenoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm pacific standard simon:

I confess -- the flexi-disc never convinced me to subscribe. By that time, I was never certain that TP would continue to publish another month.
Swag For Life Member 11:55pm 12539:

Great talk! Thanks, Ira & Mr Funk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

That said, I still have my copies. Never sold, traded, gave away or cut up any of them.
