Options Brian Turner: Playlist from May 7, 2013 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

They've been relatively lowkey in American circles, though some years ago released a Michael Gira-produced album "Ego Echo" released on his Young God imprint. Avant-classical leanings, subtle nods to Circle and even Swans float from their amps; Ulan Bator will be playing at the Delancey in NYC on May 15th with Insect Ark, Ron Anderson, and Martin Bisi. Lineup today: Amaury Cambozat (Vox/Guitar), Nathelie Forget (Onde Martenot), Luca Andriola (drums, FX), Diego Vinciarelli (Bass). Setlist: Ah-Ham / Fakir / We R You / Colere / En France/En Transe / Moon Du Bugurach / Pensees Massacre / Take Off. Band is on tour thru May 15th around the USA, check out their site for more!    1:35:05 (Pop‑up)

Hahahaha, that KFC must have been on the Isthmus, we leave the bones everywhere. for extra calcium. cause we care, and hey-we have a back-log.

Avatar 3:10pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

No isthmus here.
...but there are bones.
......i hate the bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm DCE:

I love cassettes, and continually have to hear about how backwards I am from my techfriends. It's true, though, I am totally bassackwards.
Avatar 3:11pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Bro JT changed my life forever with that live track w/Vibrolux (i saw the eye, etc) first heard on this very program, infact...
  3:11pm Woo:

Cassette player in my '99 Toyota doesn't work anymore. Only one half of my dual cassette works in the house. I still have a Walkman and that plays at strange speeds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Nate K:

I ate the bones...YES! What took you so long? Brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm DCE:

try explaining bones to your 4 year old..."without bones, we would just be a gelatinous goo!"
Avatar 3:12pm Cheri Pi:

I play my tapes all the time. Does your 4 year old know about the handmade, sun-dried, salt-cured trumpet-bones?
Avatar 3:13pm Cheri Pi:

Bespoke of course, from only the finest producers' thigh bones.

OK, if you are going to go on with the UK Psych, the Nick Haefner album is pretty great. And you can't go wrong with the Frond
Avatar 3:18pm Cheri Pi:

Hola Cecile!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm tim from champaign:

Cassettes or Legendary Pink Dots, Cecile?
Avatar 3:19pm Cecile:

I know I've heard tons of Dots songs, but they never register with me.
Avatar 3:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I'm with Cecile on this one (cassettes). They were a necessary evil back then. Like surgical staples or ipecac. They got the job done cheaply. But that's about it.
  3:20pm common:

nice lazer soundz
  3:21pm Dave in PA:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Tome:

my heart sinks over the years losing all my tapes and I miss mostly the cheap Teac which I always thought "sounded" better then the much more expensive Revox and I mean MUCH more expensive 35 years ago..,.,.,
Avatar 3:26pm Cheri Pi:

I love the natural hiss a tape provides. It makes hearing the music precarious- an adventure you're lucky to enjoy. I also enjoy Hi-Fi sound, but viva la difference i say.
Avatar 3:27pm Cheri Pi:

Towers , these kids right here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Mike East:

I miss the experience of making mixtapes, but not the shitty sound quality or the fickle tape decks always destroying my tapes.
Avatar 3:28pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

  3:28pm common:

i still record music on my 4 track. sounds good.
Avatar 3:28pm Cecile:

Avatar 3:29pm Cecile:

recording studio - yes. compilation medium - no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Mike East:

ah yes, 4 track recorders are a different beast...I definitely miss those...every one I had has crapped out, and it stopped being worth it to get them fixed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm tim from champaign:

Very profound comment, Cecile. ie - gogdheadsilo. Can I quote you?
Avatar 3:31pm Cecile:

yes, please do.
Avatar 3:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Still have my old cassette 4-track machines. All the crazy kids had Tascams & I was the outcast with my Yamahas. Ah well... Noise was made, behold, amen.
Avatar 3:32pm Cheri Pi:

Yes-that's a quote for our time C.

Avatar 3:36pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

The DC performance (ulan bator) was a brain quaker. ...

& common: mine (yamaha mt-120s) both seem to work great, though I haven't touched 'em since about 2001. Dug 'em out recently to do some digital archiving of the old crap. Weird machines.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm rob t:

i love good jungle. just love it. makes me want to sell all my dubstep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Mike East:

I've preferred the Yamahas to the Tascams I've used.
  3:41pm Woo:

My Tascam 4-track still works. It's my third one. Usually the play and record buttons break.

This is odd... just yesterday I installed a new old stock transport mechanism into an MT-120 to do transfers of some old 4 track cassettes to digital via a 4 channel firewire D/A converter
  3:45pm Woo:

Tim: A rare appearance by Twilley in Chicago. Saw him at the Beat Kitchen 10 years ago and it was great. Gonna have to pass this time.
  3:46pm JP:

Woah! GABBER!!!
Avatar 3:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Everyone else had Tascams but my old MT-120s just seemed to have better EQ or something. eh, old-fart tech geek now pauses to throw staplers at the ceiling in a feral rage...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Carmichael:

All this talk of cassettes (pronounced CASS-its, BTW), did anyone listen to Tony Coulter's Tape Hiss show on the Drummer Stream? He needs info on an 80s band called Arcane. My guys on the street are clueless ...
Avatar 4:12pm Cheri Pi:

Arcane? I'll look into it. Are they "new wave?" or 80's rock?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...barely out of the CDR compilation (80 min.s) era myself
...I like that I can shuffle an iTunes Playlist
...click on a column top & exactly reverse the songorder!
...make Playlists 900 songs long on an iPod, shuffle them, & not have to repeat a song for weeks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Carmichael:

@Cheri: 80s no-wave/experimental rock. There are about 6 bands using the name Arcane these days. They're just in the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm tim from champaign:

Punky Brewster?
Avatar 4:15pm Cheri Pi:

OK-right after we introduce Mr. Dawson to Pierre for a friendly spot of dolphin-spotting on the Isthmus- I'll take up the Arcane case.
