Hi Surface Noisers!
30 years ago, I went on a vacation with my siblings to Sag Harbor, during Hurricane Bob. I was left with the cat while they retreated and listened to an aircheck of a show Rob W. did on Bollywood obsessively.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am WO Town Wick:

The Tindersticks' duet "Travelling Light" is the saddest song, but wonderful. Always loved his voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am David (in London):

My brother had a lovely old red 2CV. It was christened 'The Biscuit Tin' as some of its body panels were about the same thickness. My son used to love prodding them when he was a toddler. We once delivered some components to a French guy and he damn near burst into tears when he was saw it, it made him feel so nostalgic.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08am nathan:

i've been OBSESSED with this first del amitri album lately. i dont understand how they basically turned into Counting Crows
Avatar 10:08am Joe McG:

@WO: Love that one! That whole second album is brilliant. @nathan: Yeah, the first one is amazing! After, well.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am David (in London):

I can't even remember who the review was about now, but I remember a line that said that whoever it was "had been scrounging around in Del Amitri's bins".
Avatar 10:09am Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Nice, two Glasgow bands in a row. David (iL) - I have a soft spot for the 2CV, but my first and most missed car was a Renault 4 - similar vibe, slightly less lethal in an accident
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am David (in London):

Kevin - I hear you. Renault 4 a much-missed classic. Today's automotive offerings are so dull in comparison.

Also, hello! (to quote RTD).
Avatar 10:11am Joe McG:

@David: There are nice moments in their later stuff, but the first one is consistently great. They have a new album out, btw.
  10:11am JT:

i seem to recall that james may shot a bazooka at a 2cv and renault 4 to see which one was safer in a war zone

  10:35am egould310:

I think “10 CC” is a reference to the volume of ejaculate as well. A more scientific “Lovin’ Spoonful”.

Going to be a great set. John Sebastian wrote some great ones....even the B sides. Still lives up here in Woodstock.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:39am Mike Sin:

"Butchie's Tune" is one of their greatest. Joe Butler -- who rarely sings -- delivered just the right amount of reserved vocal bittersweetness.
Avatar 🎸 10:39am TDK60:

I saw some text recently that said folkies in a pre-Dead formation saw L.S. play the Bay Area, then they went electric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Dennis Diken:

just tuned in to hear "Butchie's Tune," one of my favorite recordings by one of my favorite bands of all time. thanks Joe!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:40am Krys O.:

Used to watch John Sebastian host a TV series on TBS, I think, called Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am David (in London):

Phillippe, "confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme, and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current line-up, is that the band name represented a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated, thus emphasising their potency or prowess."

Apologies to anyone having lunch.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48am Matt Fiveash:

We saw John Sebastian solo at Johnny D's in Somerville MA a few years ago- he was magnificent. So many of these Spoonful tunes worked so well as Mississippi John Hurt-style solo fingerpicked versions... plus he did some actual MJH tunes, and a beautiful instrumental version of the Everlys' Walk Right Back...
  10:48am Jeremy:

Did they just sing "the full weight of your loving" ??!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am tim from washington:

@Dennis Diken - I read White Label Promo Preservation Society last week. I enjoyed your chapter on Friends. The book definitely served it's purpose because somehow I had been completely unaware of Friends.

@Matt Fiveash - cool! John is one of the most treasured of American treasures!!
  10:49am SledDawg:

Used to be in a band with a guy who was in the 2nd edition of The Critters. He told me a few stories about how Sebastian became persona non-grata on the NY scene for a while for narcing out some other folks on the scene. They went to jail and he sort of submerged until his Kotter comeback...
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

John Sebastian is a lovely guy. Saw him play in a church once!

Songs are still great of course - it was a different time and who knows what pressure he was under.

Saw John S. solo in '80s; played baritone electric guitar along with acoustic.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:52am Matt Fiveash:

SledDawg- it was actually Zally & Steve who fingered their dope dealer to avoid jail time, but the whole band got blacklisted by the counterculture mob after that, somewhat unfairly in my opinion.
  10:52am ?:

do you have their rock and roll hall of fame performance? lol...
Avatar 10:52am Danny C:

Cool set, Joe. My cousins remember seeing John Sebastian walking around Greenwich Village back in the day...
  10:52am John Pietaro:

Got to speak w Sebastian several years back, up in Woodstock when he was a guest performer w Ramblin’ Jack Elliot At the Colony.. I was reviewing the show and as I arrived, Jack and John were out in the driveway smoking and kibitzing. They were so nice to talk to, totally welcoming, but after a few minutes, gave them space. The show was absolutely great, btw, w Sebastian’s phalanx of harmonicas adding gorgeous counter-melodies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Dennis Diken:

@tim from washington - thanks! hope you dig Friends! @Matt - yes indeed, read about it in Steve Boone's fine book "Hotter Than A Match Head"

I like these John Sebastian stories! He has so many stories to tell himself. Does he have a book?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Dennis Diken:

back to the Spoonful for a second - I heard somewhere that "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" was Brian W's inspiration for "God Only Knows." the bridge to The Kinks "Shangri-La" was inspired by the section of "Summer In The City" that sings "but at night it's a different world, go out and find a girl, etc." and "Good Day Sunshine' was a reaction to "Daydream." the Spoonful spent an evening with Lennon, Harrison and Brian Jones in London, ca '66
