Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Yes. I am glad we at least waited until "spring" to do this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:10am Uncle Michael:

I want a dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:11am Brian in UK:

james I was asking after you on Doug's show as I had not seen you around. Reports of your round the world trip were dispelled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:11am Uncle Michael:

Or a cat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:11am listener james from westwood:

Glad to be here!! Was traveling last Sunday in St. Pete at the tail end of a copyediting conference; prev. Sunday I was packing and pre-travel stressing! Love my editing buddies but glad to be home and in front of a computer playing D:O with some proofreading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:12am listener james from westwood:

Awfully decent of you to have asked around! Was waaaaay low on data so live listens while in FL had to be deferred until I was near Wi-Fi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:13am listener james from westwood:

(And sorry to hear of your wife's injury, Brian—sending wishes for speedy healing!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:16am Brian in UK:

Thanks; it is this side of well on the way to the peak of normal (an album title in there somewhere). Dog walking is a step too far as lateral movement is the worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:19am Uncle Michael:

Working our way toward steel-cut oats and thick-cut bacon here in Kansas. Denying myself that second cup of coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:22am Andrew Waterloo:

thick cut bacon is the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:22am listener james from westwood:

UM, that combo sounds excellent. Had a healthy smoothie earlier today, but now eyeing the danish I bought a short while a go. Having it with real caffeinated coffee is damn tempting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:23am Uncle Michael:

We've mastered the craft of labor-unintensive steel cut oats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:23am listener james from westwood:

Do you soak them in the milk overnight? I've found that helps cut down cooking time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:25am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:25am doctorjazz:

hi all!
Happy Birthday Scraps!
Hope your wife is feeling better, Brian (my experience with fractures, they're usually most painful the 1st 2 weeks, then feel better.
Welcome Listener James.
Hi everyone else!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:26am Uncle Michael:

Time isn't an issue. We've tried the overnight method. We like this method better. In our five qt. Belgian enamel dutch oven with the heavy lid, I bring 4 qts water to a boil with a half tsp. kosher salt. Stir in 1 cup steel cut oats and bring to a simmer. Put it in the oven at 350 on the middle rack. Stir it at 20 and 40 minutes. Serve it at 60 minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:26am Jeff Golick:

We're out of coffee...wife and I shared a half-empty bottle of cold brew we found in the fridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Belated welcomes to @Revolution Rabbit! Current hello to @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:27am Uncle Michael:

End-times, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:28am Andrew Waterloo:

I never run out of coffee. I enjoy buying it too much. Same with wine and books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oats are good for the tummy, skin & brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:28am listener james from westwood:

Ah, had not considered the Dutch oven option; thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:28am doctorjazz:

Caught the end of Abdullah Ibrahim, darn check it out later).
Have the same issue with the pop up player on a PC, stopped working when shows c change. Seems to only affect the Drummer stream, not shows on the regular stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:30am listener james from westwood:

One of the copy editors at the aforementioned conference is a home roaster of coffee beans who brings her full works (beans, grinder, Aeropress) on road trips. Serious Business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:30am Uncle Michael:

We dutch oven anything that requires stirring to avoid sticking and burning on the stove. Stews, chilis, bean dishes, lentils, robust soups..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:32am Uncle Michael:

We also finally found the one reusable pod for a Keurig that makes a good cup of coffee and cleans up easily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah, re the pop-up player: it's not your set-up. The player will often need to be paused and then "play" again to resolve the hiccuping that comes with a new live show coming on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:33am Andrew Waterloo:

Reportedly, one of our sales people prepares his own food in his hotel room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:33am doctorjazz:

Looking forward to catching The Microscopic Septet tonight in Manhattan. Their new album sounds like it should be fun (read a review), should be getting it soon. The Micros and Abdullah Ibrahim are up there with the artists I've gone to see most often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:34am listener james from westwood:

I was tempted to take a blender along this trip, as there was a Publix supermarket right across the way from the hotel—smoothies would've been much cheaper than at local outlets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:38am doctorjazz:

In the meantime, walk Ozzie, then back to trying to get should out of the PC. Kaspersky help scanned and listed programs for me to delete, but that's not straight forward (for me), add they're not all listed in the settings program delete...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:39am doctorjazz:

Cool set, Jeff, up my alley.
  Sun. 4/2/17 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Jeff and all D:Oobie Brothers and Sisters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Doug! That's a good one and I'm stealing it for a future email.
  Sun. 4/2/17 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Use it in G:Ood health.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:44am doctorjazz:

(get sound out of the PC was the sentence).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:45am Jeff Golick:

This Green Mountain will have to do (for me) in lieu of actual coffee for a while...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Third? As in Soft Machine - as in 'We Did It Again'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:45am Jeff Golick:

Glad you are digging, @doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:46am Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: dunno! I sort of her the DNA of the Dan's "Do it Again," come to think of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:47am Jeff Golick:

(And yeah, I said "The Dan." I hang my head in shame.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:48am doctorjazz:

@RRN3, the rhythm percolates in a similar fashion
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:48am Andrew Waterloo:

@doctorjazz Did you go through the "Troubleshoot sound problems"
  Sun. 4/2/17 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Back to the shelves of glory. Sounding glorious, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 9:49am doctorjazz:

I think I did, it tells me all is well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Doug! That Dulfer inspired by your playing of Rudd's "Maine" not so long ago. Bye, @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:54am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:56am Jeff Golick:

@Artie! Hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 9:58am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yay set. Good medicine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:01am Brian in UK:

Did he say agglomoration?

You know I think he did.

What a classy show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:02am Artie Haywire:

@UM: 1 cup oats to 4 quarts of water? Typo, or thin style?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:04am Uncle Michael:

Not a typo and thin at all...very thick. Trust me. But don't trust 350, I'm going back to 325. The pot is going to need soaking now, and that's no labor-unintensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:04am Jeff Golick:

Yayah, @RRN63!
@Brian: can't spell classy without assy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:05am Uncle Michael:

*not thin at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:05am Jeff Golick:

Dog now destroying an old cardboard box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:06am Uncle Michael:

That's the name of this track, Jeff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Ha. No, that's the play-by-play of what's happening in my living room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:08am Uncle Michael:

Dog following his/her bliss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:09am doctorjazz:

Is it a puppy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:10am Brian in UK:

Some good chewy toys are essential.

If it were a cat, it would simple jump in the box and pretend it was a ship and there were pirates to fight and gold to discover. Well, of course not, cats have the imagination of a, well cat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:10am doctorjazz:

Does Blythe play the tiniest bit sharp on purpose? Jackie McClean does this, I think Blythe does too (could be wrong, just what I think I hear...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:12am Jeff Golick:

A rescue, @doc, so we're not a 100% sure. We were told he's 3, but his very clean teeth suggested to the vet he was younger.

So many toys strewn, lifeless, on the carpet.

@doctorjazz: I don't have the ear to answer that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:12am doctorjazz:

It gets a bit of an edge on the playing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:13am Uncle Michael:

Cat imagination: If I hide in this box, something will scurry by, unawares, for me to kill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:15am doctorjazz:

Ozzie's mission in life is a tear the squeaker in his toys out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:15am Brian in UK:

Got to take a powder. Todays show sounds as intense as Doug's last Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Good day, Brian! Thanks for hanging here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:18am Jeff Golick:

The front line of this Synthesis band is Arthur Blythe, Olu Dara, and David Murray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:18am annie:

rats, i got sucked into the gospel show on OZ... can't.. turn.. off... bummer. i just got doug's email reminder.. oh well, archives for me!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:19am Jeff Golick:

Hard to compete with that, @annie! Thanks for coming by, anyway. Archives work wonderfully. (Does WOZ archive their programming?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:20am doctorjazz:

Olu Dara in his cornet playing days, cool. What a front line! Murray loved Flowers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:25am doctorjazz:

Taken from an Ayler theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:28am Jeff Golick:

INTERface is mostly John Fischer's group. He ran the Environ space in the 1970s, in NYC. This cut is Fischer with Lester Bowie and Blythe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:30am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @doc, Murray played "Flowers for..." in so many contexts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:34am Uncle Michael:

Ever heard Murray's Grateful Dead album, or recordings of him playing with the Dead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Nope! Are they bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:35am Uncle Michael:

Is that really for me to say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:35am Uncle Michael:

  Sun. 4/2/17 10:36am Dean:

Dark Star is a fun album. Murray's playing in Vallejo in five days.
  Sun. 4/2/17 10:37am Dean:

...with Kahlil el'Zabar, I might add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:37am doctorjazz:

I have the Dead concert with Branford Marsalis, and a CD of Murray doing all Dead music, but not that Dead/Murray show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:40am doctorjazz:

Great track! Blythe was one of the guys exploring the sound of bands with a tuba for bad...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:41am doctorjazz:

(..that should be.bass)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:43am Uncle Michael:

Branford sat in a bunch of times...Murray maybe just the once. Dean could say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Yup. Couldn't really be much more "in the tradition" that than.

Hi hi hi, @Dean! You going to see Murray?
  Sun. 4/2/17 10:45am Dean:

Heh. Could.

Listened just yesterday to Blythe's Focus with Gust William Tsilis on grand marimba and Bob Stewart on tuba. Cecil Brooks III drumming, naturally.

Murray's a maybe. A friend is going, but we'd have to get a sitter. Not sure it's gonna happen. Will report back if we do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Got something from that band cued up, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:49am Uncle Michael:

So, opening day...I'm excited and anxious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Yes, very exciting and anxious-making. Gotta pace ourselves, though. Loooong season.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:55am Uncle Michael:

That's the one, Doc.

If the Cubs lose in St. Louis tonight, the StL fans will act like it nullifies the 2016 season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:56am Jeff Golick:

I hate St. Louis fans with an irrational passion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:56am Uncle Michael:

It's not irrational.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:57am Jeff Golick:

A blog I follow during the season notes each Cards loss, and the current total of losses.
  Sun. 4/2/17 10:57am ?:

Loving the show JG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:57am Jeff Golick:

It's very satisfying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:57am Uncle Michael:

I love how Deadspin has it in for StL.
  Sun. 4/2/17 10:57am Dean:

So has Trumpism infected the national pastime, or vice versa?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 10:58am Jeff Golick:

That's the site/blog!

Glad to hear it, @?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:58am Uncle Michael:

Trump's too cowardly to show up and throw out the first pitch.
  Sun. 4/2/17 10:59am Dean:

Maybe he's a catcher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 10:59am Uncle Michael:

Don't ask, don't tell.
  Sun. 4/2/17 11:00am Dean:

That's his motto re: taxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:01am Uncle Michael:

I love how Mike Matheny comes right out and admits that he can't imagine being both competitive, and having fun.
  Sun. 4/2/17 11:01am Dean:

Blythe was at Yoshi's in '03?! Damn, I missed that! I was in law school at the time, so I missed a lot of shows. But I made it to Yoshi's for David Murray and James Carter around that time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:03am Uncle Michael:

I know I've asked...ever see the Junius Courtney band there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:03am Jeff Golick:

@UM: he should learn how to spell his last name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:04am Uncle Michael:

I'm going to PM Ted Barron something men on FB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:04am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Barron = redbird man?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:06am Jeff Golick:

Recently discovered that Barron is a very good photographer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:07am Uncle Michael:

Yes, he is. On both counts.

No Junius Courtney, I'm afraid. I forget the connection. Friend? Family? St. Louis fan?

My fave Bahb album.

The faves can rotate, I think.

Wull - after the 2009 Beatle Remasters - I see that as one body of work - which is easier when you have a Box to hold...
  Sun. 4/2/17 11:17am Dean:

Checking out the Courtney Big Band story...wow. Reminds me of a book I checked out last year from the library, a history of jazz in the East Bay that shows where the clubs were. One of the featured venues is now a Wells Fargo bank in El Cerrito.
  Sun. 4/2/17 11:17am Dean:

Ah, *that* Jim Newman!
  Sun. 4/2/17 11:18am Dean:

I also listened yesterday to a Charles Amirkhanian record.

Which Charles album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:21am Jeff Golick:

The idea here was, loosely, "talky."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:22am Uncle Michael:

I wonder if Amy ever heard Bob Dylan's 115th Dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:23am Uncle Michael:

I wonder if anyone's ever written "Talking Blues Talking Blues".

Walking Tune on Starkland, c.'92.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:26am Scraps:

UM, I think John Wesley Harding has almost done it...

Somebody flagged this recent story about Amirkhanian: http://www.musicandliterature.org/features/2017/2/2/restless-minimalism-lexical-music-and-the-text-sound-compositions-of-charles-amirkhanian

It mentions Ernst Toch. I work with his one of his grandsons.

Murray's "Dark Star" is, if not great, at least a deserved jazz exploration into the Dead's thing. He basically played the album at a Prospect Park concert around the time of its release w/a highlight being the playing of James Spaulding who I always loved from his days w/Sun Ra. Along w/Branford M, the Dead also jammed a couple of times w/Ornette in outings that, again, if not exemplary, were notable for the courage of all the players. Jerry played on Ornette's "Virgin Beauty" LP tho hard to distinguish him much in the mix.

Love Ava Luna. Think this is the first time I heard them on FMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/2/17 11:37am doctorjazz:

Hearing quite a bit of hot guitar (including the Dylan and Rigby tracks).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There are a lot of worlds from Hank, Sr. to Ornette - Jerry could move between them all. Bob Dylan *did* say that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:38am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: I keep waiting for them to make that really great album.

Preach, @Toby and @Revolution Rabbit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:39am Jeff Golick:

@doc: hot, as in "sounding fried through the radio," or hot as in hot shit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:40am Scraps:

Love Ornette, admire Garcia, but (imo) Virgin Beauty was a cold album (and the three tracks Garcia played on).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:42am Scraps:

Jeff, I agree that Ava Luna's strength is individual songs, not (so far) albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/2/17 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Also: hey, @Toby!

Story I heard about Dead/Branford shows (may not by didn't rehearse, Branford was oly slightly familiar with the muse. Jeffy would run through the chords before the show for him. When he got to Dark Star, he told Branford "This is boring, only 1 chord. But the fans seem to like it..."

Great show, Jeff.
