good morning jeff et al!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:00am fred:

Good morning Jeff and annie and others
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:01am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @fred! Hello, @annie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:01am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:01am annie:

hope everyone is fine today. we finally have a mild spring rain out there, and it appears it might be rainy on and off a week. we could use it
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:02am Jeff Golick:

'morning, @Andrew Waterloo!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

The good news: I am home from the Triscuit Wars today! The bad news: I'm home in order to write a paper. Will be procrastinating intermittently. Good morning, G:Olick!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:03am Dave in Vermont:

20 degrees (slushy snow that was wet is now frozen hard and crusty0 here but the birds are going nuts out there as if it is spring or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:05am annie:

they have no calendars to fool them dave, they know.. trust them..
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:06am fred:

@Doug: It could be worse: two friends are currently deep in PhD thesis writing, which doesn't even remotely look like fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:07am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and sensation seekers.

fred, good gig last night?
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:08am Jeff Golick:

How do, @Doug! Dave in Vermont! Brian in UK!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

More good news: Our dog was terrified of stairs at first, too. We thought she was scared of the slippery bare-wood steps, but it was really just about her conquering a fear of the unknown. My advice: Use treats. The desire for a succulent nibble usually overcomes all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:08am Brian in UK:

Jeff, any thoughts on Kyle Eastwood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:09am Brian in UK:

Oh Doug, a succulent nibble conquers all.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug. That's good to hear. Treats...and patience, I think. The latter will be harder to come by.

@Brian: imagine a blank thought bubble. I am ig'nant; do tell!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:11am Jeff Golick:

(Ooohhhhh...THAT Eastwood.)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Every time the dog traverses the stairs, give yourself a treat. Try that.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:12am fred:

@Brian: The venue sucked (too much hostile security) and I was disappointed by Wolf Eyes, but Scorpion Violente were good and different than usual, which made their set great in my book
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Ooof it really sucks how the security staff can ruin an evening, @fred. Haven't encountered that in a looong while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:14am Brian in UK:

Well, his last one The View from Here is good.

fred that is why I strongly dislike Brixton Academy upstairs seated. If you stand up just to scratch your arse they are on you to sit down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:15am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Insecurity Men
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Ha. Hello there, @Revolution Rabbit Nov63.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:21am fred:

I also understand that in the current climate, having security to prevent people from talking loudly outside is the only way to avoid neighbor complaints and keep the venue open. But making me throw away a small water bottle I needed to take meds, even though they were not selling water inside, ruined the first set for me. I complained to one of the organizers, and he went backstage and gave me one. These are good people
  Sun. 3/26/17 9:22am JtotheK:

Good Morning everyone.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @JtotheK! Welcome.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:23am Jeff Golick:

That sucks about the water. And here I thought those venues made most of their money selling water.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:23am Jeff Golick:

Although the postscript to the story is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:24am Brian in UK:

fred I know the cocktail of meds you have to ingest is mighty.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:25am fred:

@Brian: No, it's not. But it has to be taken on a very regular schedule, which can get inconvenient
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:29am Brian in UK:

Jeff, does this refer to Richard Feynman, the man who never got to Baku?
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:30am Jeff Golick:

I believe that it does, @Brian, but only based on my own supposition and hope.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:30am duke:

Hello D:Oers
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @duke!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I will leave my PhD thesis writing for another lifetime. Although, one should never say never. (But: never!)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:31am Jeff Golick:

That Feyman record is $4 at bandcamp, btw: nachtrecords.com...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:36am fred:

@Doug: Sometimes, a lifetime looks like it's how long it takes (I also know two people who have supposedly been writing them for decades: one on Godard, one on medieval burials in the Baltic area)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:36am Brian in UK:

Not doing too well today, think it was Tuva not Baku, similar part of the world.
Enjoying the sounds for this sunny day as we Springclean.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Tuva or Bust, yes, @Brian, but my brain picked up the wavelength without noting the difference.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:38am fred:

@Brian: Similar parts of the world? Man, you need a drink. I'm getting worried
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:39am Andy in Etobicoke:

Good morning Jeff,
Work, laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, radio happiness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:40am Andrew Waterloo:

trying to read the digital version of the Wire here :)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Have you seen/heard footage of Feynman playing bongos and chanting about orange juice? Go here: youtu.be...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Good morning to you, @Andy in Etobicoke!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:45am Jeff Golick:

@Andrew: have they made it any more user-friendly? Had a digital Wire subscription years ago but found the whole interface to be...difficult.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:45am fred:

This Oba Loba track is delightful
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:46am Andrew Waterloo:

@Jeff it's still crap. Especially when compared to how nice the printed version is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:46am Andrew Waterloo:

It's a little better on a tablet, for some reason I can't zoom as much as I would like.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:47am Jeff Golick:

@fred: brand new to me just this week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 9:50am doctorjazz:

good morning all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 9:54am doctorjazz:

Great Scheinman track... There are some great YouTube videos of them doing this live.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:54am fred:

@doctorjazz: good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...You can't expect a publication like Wire to have any insight into web presence...
In some great elliptical way - there's Chuck Berry in that track...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @doctorjazz! I saw that band (and got that disc) at a Vanguard gig they did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 9:59am Andrew Waterloo:

@RRR except for the fact that Wire publishes through Xact Editions, a company that is supposed to know web presence.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Upcoming release: "Scheinman Plays Feynman." (I can dream, can't I?)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:01am fred:

@Andrew Waterloo: I guess it's meant to be read on a phone, as most things are
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:06am doctorjazz:

Hey Fred, mixed reviews for the show last night, but seems to have worked out OK in the end. I saw a play, Sweat", pretty good, though it was undermiked and hard to catch muchof the dialog. Pretty well done attempt to capture the plight of the laid off factory worker, though the cynic could also see it as a way to assuage liberal guilt.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:06am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I'd buy that. Btw, I've tried to read Feynman's Six Easy Pieces. My verdict: not so easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:08am doctorjazz:

Stringin'us along,eh, Jeff?
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:09am Jeff Golick:

Hope so, @doc.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:14am fred:

@doctorjazz: Sounds nice, but I'm afraid I don't get theater. Too many words. Though I saw a dance show by Ambra Senatore last week that featured many words, but that somehow didn't bother me
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:17am doctorjazz:

I didn't do much theater until relatively recently, but having an actress daughter got the interest going. (my wife is also a big musical theater fan).
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:21am Jeff Golick:

The compression/clipping on this viola track is either intentional...or just a bad recording. It's not your set-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:22am doctorjazz:

I often have trouble "getting " dance shows, Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 10:25am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Reading Artaud's 'Theater & It's Double' from 1938 or such (about when Robert Johnson summed up PreWar Blues for export) - I felt that Rawk culture was (as a spontaneous reaction) basically the fulfillment of what he thot Theatre would have to be to really be relevant in these Times (he expounded on Light & Sound a great deal) - altho', he did wish for a specific well-developed & defined Language of these sensual elements...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

One choreographer/dancer whose work often incorporates music and musicians (dancing with their instruments!) in a captivating way is Yoshiko Chuma and her School of Hard Knocks. I recommend seeking out her work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:29am doctorjazz:

Gig alert in NYC area... One of my favorite bands The Microscopic Septet, will be at Smalls Sunday 4/2...hope I can get there.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:29am Jeff Golick:

I confess I tend to skip whatever dance perfs are slated for the Vision Fest. (Same re any spoken word, truth be told.)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:30am Jeff Golick:

Wow, Smalls? That'd be a great place to see those guys. They have a new record out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:31am doctorjazz:

I'm part of the advanced crowd fund raising for that CD, should get it soon.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:32am fred:

@Doug: She doesn't seem all that likely to come nearby, but I'll keep an eye out
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Actually, Yoshiko is constantly on the road, performing all over the world. She is currently performing in Cairo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:36am doctorjazz:

Jeff, Tuesday night @ Barbes they are performing (not exactly the Micros, a side project called The Silent Six). Right in your neck of the woods.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:37am fred:

Speaking of dance, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will have a stretched out performance of an earlier piece at MoMA next week. I saw the original work and parts of the museum performance, I think it's worth spending some time there: www.moma.org...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:38am fred:

@Doug: Do you have a link to her schedule? Google led me to a stale one with nothing past 2013
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I don't see a current web page for Yoshiko. She does post her movements and itinerary on Facebook: www.facebook.com...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 10:49am Dave in Vermont:

@fred, I am mourning that which is too geographically and financially distant. When I was falling in love with dance I used to watch this De Keersmaeker video that was set in some abandoned warehouse. I got to see her company once or twice. Along with Marie Chouinard she is the tippy top for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 10:56am doctorjazz:

Digging this Rova group.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:01am fred:

@Doug: I'm not on facebook (I know... I don't have a phone either)
@Dave: I saw Rosas somewhere north of forty times, so I'm obviously a fan. I don't remember that video, do you remember the name of the piece? I love this one, especially the part starting at about 12 minutes (this video also features Cynthia Loemij, my favorite dancer ever): www.youtube.com...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I congratulate you, Sir! Being "plugged in" is way overrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 11:03am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'dO' is in a sense an ironic title - as the idea is always to listen & wake up & actually get myself out to the BreakfastDiner in time on a Sunday...then I get totally pulled into the great stuff presented & the schoolin' & convo in the Comments...I could easily be reduced to an FMU receiving robot...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
RevRab is onto our scheme. Quick, put on a fake moustache!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:06am fred:

@RRN63: right on: I was debating going to the closing performance of Sonic Protest, but now it's too late. This show is too good
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:06am NOT Jeff Golick:

...way ahead of you, @Doug...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:09am fred:

@Doug: I'm not worthy of your praise: I'm sure I'd get a phone if I didn't think supporting the station was a better use of my limited funds
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:10am NOT Jeff Golick:

This is Horse Lords, btw, covering (if that's the word) a Julius Eastman composition, part of the spillover effect from the rediscovery of Eastman's work over the last year+.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:11am NOT Jeff Golick:

Youses guyses are the best listeners there ever was.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Honestly, I salute anyone who prioritizes richer more meaningful things ahead of being constantly connected via devices and such. I feel that way in my heart, but I don't have the courage of my convictions.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:13am Jeff Golick:

Staying away from social media since 1/20/17 has kept me out of the loony bin, I'm pretty sure.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:13am fred:

Julius Eastman's Femenine was one of my favorite "new" music last year. No way I'd have heard this without WFMU
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Same here, @fred! Have your heard the 3-CD collection that came out a little earlier, that has "Stay on It" on it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 11:15am doctorjazz:

And, the Horse Lords taxi is damn amazing!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:16am Jeff Golick:

I would like to ride in a Horse Lords taxi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 11:17am doctorjazz:

:)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:18am Dave in Vermont:

I saw Horse Lords in Winooski- there were like 10-15 people there and probably half of them or less were there on purpose for Horse Lords
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:18am fred:

@Jeff: I haven't. I guess I'm going to schedule some serious Eastman binge once I recover from the marathon (I stocked up on ramen and Guinness. Amazing deals after pledging: buy one get one free one week, and yesterday buy one get 7 free!)
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Wow, nice, @Dave. How was the show?
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:20am fred:

Gotta start lobbying Instants Chavirés to bring Horse Lords
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:22am Dave in Vermont:

incredible, as expected-
tho, with their long form compositions I hoped they would have played a longer set
  Sun. 3/26/17 11:25am melinda:

Hi folks
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @melinda!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:27am fred:

@Doug: Funny coming from a guy who built a even more outlandish model for what a radio station can be
  Sun. 3/26/17 11:29am from Quebec:

@Fred 11:20: looks like you may not need to do that. Horse Lords are apparently on tour in Europe, with a Paris date on Apr 1.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Now that's service! Thanks (Ike?) from Quebec!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 11:31am Brian in UK:

You gotta be in the know to know.
Gotta go, now the house is as clean as a new spring.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:32am Dave in Vermont:

Marie Chouinard is also touring around Europe, @fred.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Um, yeah. I am a study in contradictions. But I like your framing of it:

"GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO: An even more outlandish model for what a radio station can be."

I will try to remember that for next marathon.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @Brian! Thanks for being here.
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:35am Jeff Golick:

This band is ridiculous: Braxton; George Lewis, trombone; Muhal Richard Abrams, piano; Mark Helias, bass; Charles "Bobo" Shaw (RIP), drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 3/26/17 11:41am doctorjazz:

Amazing band-Shaw's drums really jump out in the mix
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:43am fred:

@from Quebeq: At Zorba? That's going to be a weird show. Thanks heaps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 11:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like Trane & Elvin or maybe Roy Haynes - & such a together band how they all fit in perfectly...Rawkers try & blow each other away - Jazzbos actually listen to each other ( ! )...sounds simple & obvious but it's the whole shootin' match...
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:49am fred:

@Dave: Her shows in France are already past, but I've already seen these (a bit too much ballet in there for me too)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 11:50am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...what they do w/ the Soace - all kinda soloing @ once there - like Post-Modal Dixieland...very interesting piece & performance...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 11:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

s*Pace (is their Place)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 3/26/17 11:52am Scraps:

  Sun. 3/26/17 11:52am JtotheK:

Enjoyed the show today -- thanks!
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:53am duke:

I've heard the excuse "the dog ate my homework.", but this is the first time for "the dog ate my radio show"
Avatar Sun. 3/26/17 11:55am Jeff Golick:

Ha. Yes. Sorry about that. Hiya, @Scraps!

@JtotheK: thanks for being here!
