Ha, @ngh. The way I said that was pretty stilted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:11am fred:

@Jeff: pretty good, despite the subpar conditions. These guys are great. I'm lobbying my fave venue to have them, and told one of the band members who they should contact there
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So knew right off this was a pretty recent track, cause we didn't always know... :
'The dwarf planet Pluto has five moons down to a detection limit of about 1 km in diameter. In order of distance from Pluto, they are Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra. Charon, the largest of the five moons, is mutually tidally locked with Pluto, and is massive enough that Pluto–Charon is sometimes considered a double dwarf planet.'

Way to build those bridges, @fred!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:26am JtotheK:

I'd heard of Hemphill and Dogon AD, but never actually /heard/ it. Enjoying - thanks for playing it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:26am Jeff Golick:

I could play this Hemphill every week, @doctorjazz. Was surprised it's been about three years.

How could it be any other way, @Rev?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:32am Jeff Golick:

@fred: thanks for the link. I tend not to read that feature, but that was good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:32am doctorjazz:

Happy Birthday Phil,. He's a bit long winded and hard to listen to these days, but I learned a lot about about Jazz from his trap shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like a metrically minimalist PostRawk Mingus - w/ some Ornette in there...Man - Thx for all these flavors I'd simply never know otherwise...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:34am Jeff Golick:

The Dogon A.D. record changed Tim Berne's life. He's spoken of its importance to him, and went on to study with Hemphill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:35am Jeff Golick:

You're gonna want to get comfy for this one (Hennies).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:37am fred:

This Sarsh Hennies piece is great so far, would make me comfy even at work
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:41am melinda:

hi folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:41am doctorjazz:

@Fred, the other Birthday Boy! Glad you enjoyed the show. I think you have inspired me to get off my rump to get to some shows. Caught the Microscopic Septet last week (great show, Love those guys. Have a new album based on The Blues that I also really like). Last night, at the local Paper Mill Theater saw The Million Dollar Quartet, which was actually a lot of fun. And Friday plan to catch Dave Douglas in Philly. Maybe squeeze something else in there (but we're having a big family gathering on Tuesday for the Jewish holiday, which will keep me busy with preparations and stuff)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:42am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @melinda!

And I see @Dave in Vermont has chimed in! Hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:43am Scraps:

This is vibraphone? Wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:43am doctorjazz:

You can really great Hemphill in Berne's tone, and also in his comparing/arranging. Not at all a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:44am northguineahills:

Sarah Hennies, new to me, and really vibes w/ me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:45am northguineahills:

oh, happy bday lads!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:45am doctorjazz:

That is amazing, this is one most unpercussive percussion instrument playing I think I have heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:46am melinda:

This sounds like Star Trek but more subtle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:47am Jeff Golick:

It's two vibraphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:48am listener james from westwood:

works swimmingly with proofreading!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Goes with the Reich piece @fred posted up at 9:26, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:49am doctorjazz:

It does still have that vibes "shimmer",and the tonality...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:50am Scraps:

It's hard for me to concentrate on this, as most lowercase stuff. ADHD. But I'm trying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:53am Dave in Vermont:

Jeff, you are now known as 'the dog guy' in my house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:54am Scraps:

Flourish is a weird title, to me. Doesn't have flourishes! (That's a very mild criticism.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:56am Scraps:

Oh, dear....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:57am doctorjazz:

I have Dogon AD on LP a an Arista Freedom 1028. nice that is available on CD now, it was hard to find for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:57am Scraps:

Back to lying down, and very much listening. Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 9:58am doctorjazz:

With Discogs and digital sources, though, I suppose you can find most stuff now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:59am Jeff Golick:

@Dave: ha. This dog will either kill me or improve my life immeasurably. It's made me very emotional.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 9:59am Jeff Golick:

I'll try to play music for horizontal listening, @Scraps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:00am fred:

I wear a battered leather jacket and cowboy boots to noise shows, and I love Sinatra
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:00am Brian in UK:

Bought this LP recently. Goes well with Cottage for Sale & In the Wee Small Hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 10:01am Jeff Golick:

I am a huge fan of the mid-to-late 1950s Sinatra run on Capitol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:01am doctorjazz:

Back to plug... Been Up So Long Seems Like Down To Me, the new Microscopic Septet album, is much fun to listen to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:03am doctorjazz:

Never quite "got" Sinatra, oh well. The Evans is great, though, he had chips in reserve he doesn't often show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:04am doctorjazz:

Chops in reserve, that is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:04am fred:

@doctojazz: Any clue about when Microscopic Septet might be playing in/near Paris? I'd go on your recommendation alone (unless it's as expensive as jazz tends to be over here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 10:05am Jeff Golick:

I was aided in my Sinatra education by the WNYC dj Jonathan Schwartz, and also my wife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:05am Brian in UK:

@doc never seen a pianist get his noddle so close to the keys as Bill Evans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:05am Brian in UK:

Frank S had some great songs to pick from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:07am Brian in UK:

S'funny the eighteen year old me is going 'Jeez you writing about Frank Sinatra'. Mind when I was growing up it was the toupee and cheesy gigs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:08am doctorjazz:

My wife likes to listen to Jonathan as well, but all that Sinatra he plays has just gotten him to OK, but don't get why he's musically a big deal (Schwartz!s talking is also getting longer and longer, and the music he plays slower and slower)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @Brian, one has to be able to see past what Sinatra became.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:12am Brian in UK:

You have a band of Bill Evanss'. Idris Mohammed. Yusef Lateef (I know surname change soon after birth)
  Sun. 4/9/17 10:12am from Quebec:

@fred @9:06 you're welcome! Glad to hear it was a good set; will try to catch them in Montreal in June.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:12am fred:

I guess I was lucky enough to grow up without Sinatra, so when I first heard him I didn't have the negative I would have got from endless play in vacation car trips
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 10:14am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @from Quebec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 10:14am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of a certain age that Frankie was the Enemy - a vocal Rawk Hater & the Vegas Culture & al this...got Hipper - said why not African-Americans getting all that cred & cash??...then we get more PostMod - & I read Miles learned from him (tho' Miles of course said many things...) - & then I heard some...Realized I always made fun of Crooners - because I like them - came to laff stayed to pray, as happens...Of course he's one of those you have to pick & choose the right period & stuff - not all his long output is equal...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 10:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:19am Brian in UK:

As Jeff wrote the mid-Fifties with Riddle & Jenkins (Realtors) were tops. As someone once said at a gig 'If you are waiting for the happy songs, you better leave now'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:20am doctorjazz:

As far as seeing the Micros, I don't think it's really possible these days, they don't do regular tours or gigs. They used to play regularly in the 80s and 90s, and I saw them many times then. One of the leaders/composers of the band Philip Johnston, moved to Australia, and the band broke up and didn't record or perform for many years. In the last few years, Johnston had been visiting the NY area once or twice a year, and they put on reunion concerts and record sometimes. Their first 3 albums are just fabulous (available as a CD box set "Seven Men in Neckties ", which is great stuff)

One dinner I did learn to appreciate from Jonathan Schwartz is Mel Torme... Hated him at one point, and he does some shtick I don't love, but he really had a jazz players chips and approach.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:25am fred:

@doctorjazz: I'll have to listen to these records. It could be a fit for a Sonic Protest appearance if their stuff is weird enough. My influence is minimal though

I haven't been in New York in five + years, but Joel Forrester does a lot of playing, both with his quartet and piano solo. He's really good, really individual, and why he's hasn't got more famous I really don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:30am doctorjazz:

Amazing how you can find some Sun Ra that fits almost any set...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 10:31am fred:

@doctorjazz: Thanks for the link. I'll try to drop the name, but really the coin of this land is live shows, so I don't think it will get anywhere

FORCES IN MOTION - one of my favorite books of any kind. I too feared it on some level; this was completely misguided. IT IS DELIGHTFUL! And deep. Am actually trying to bring it back into print via my day job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @fred. I had been thinking it was something I've been sort of inflicting on people.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 11:32am Jeff Golick:

Oh, good. There is of course of selfish motive: how else am I going to be able to listen to much of his stuff, and so closely?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 11:32am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Why not? What other Out stuff (which is after all what the Sign on the Door says) would you play ? How would this not be good enuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:37am doctorjazz:

True dat, it's just truth in advertising. And, while I also have some of this stuff in the record racks it's nice to focus on on it in depth (amazing how this stuff becomes less jarring over time...)
  Sun. 4/9/17 11:39am Dean:

It would be fun to hear multiple performances of the same composition from different times, different ensembles/performers. I wonder if I'd even recognize them as "same."

Yeah, I feel similarly, @Dean. I think that "6A" has been around a long while, could probably round up many perfs. The compositions often just provide the framework, rather then a set theme or head. I think. Probably not always.

True, those symbols Braxton uses sometimes I think are a abstract guide, without much else in the music written out.
  Sun. 4/9/17 11:47am Dean:

The Ghost Trance Music at least invokes a recognizable style of sorts.

No jazz act in my near future, but I'm going to see Gnod at last. I'll miss next week's show though, pretending to be a responsible uncle

Thanks for the Micros, Jeff! (was I annoying enough?)
I was really a groupie of this band for a while-saw many of their performances in lower Manhattan, including one at Under Acme on a Sunday when a blizzard started. I was there with a friend, and 4 other folks (family, I expect), who left for the second set. I have a tendency to bop to the music at shows, and at one point the whole band was copying me from the bandstand. I've talked to them between sets since then, and they still remember me from that show...

Play dos bluze, Jeff G!

Blues Forever, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 11:52am Jeff Golick:

I thought of the Muhal, but fear I've played it too recently to re-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:53am doctorjazz:

True, but it's great, OK with me if you put it on rotation in a while from now...

...sing a bit, does she...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:54am doctorjazz:

And, who can complain if Aretha is next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:55am doctorjazz:

Almost that time, great show, Jeff, have a nice week all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:55am fred:

@doctorjazz: I had fun times with Schwervon that way
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:57am doctorjazz:

A good show week to you, @Fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 11:58am Scraps:

I bop my head live, too. can't help it. i do it silently, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 11:58am doctorjazz:

(I had to Google Schwervon, check them out on Bandcamp...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 12:00pm Scraps:

oh, i missed the go-betweens. one of my ten fave rock bands, period
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

Kind of veered into end-of-Doug's-show territory here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 12:00pm doctorjazz:

I can't sit still if I love the music and it has rhythmic thurst, happens even at classical concerts (I annoy folks at times, not deliberately)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 12:00pm fred:

@doctorjazz: sorry, probably not your thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 12:01pm doctorjazz:

Not quite the Soul set, @Jeff, it's fine.
@Fred-lots of stuff is my thing, I'll check it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 4/9/17 12:02pm doctorjazz:

Any recommendations?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

That's good territory to be in, Jeff. Thanks for all three hours!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/9/17 12:05pm Jeff Golick:

A little late with the comment, but I really enjoyed the show.
