Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Diversions preempted listening to the show for a few weeks, and first thing I hear upon returning is the Party track with that slightly wonky-warpy-spin flavor. A reacclimating and affirming reentry.

No thoughts but I saw her on a morning show and liked the arrangement (who's the steel player), though I regretted the fiddle part came out of a synth.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 12:31pm geezerette:

@Lane: Thanks for reminding me! I never think of him but he was an important part of the show. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Danny!
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 12:33pm Lane Gray:

I'm not sure who's on steel. I wish he had a bigger amp, he was overdriven on the live thing I saw.
The title cut (Detour) is a duet with Emmylou
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 12:34pm JP from KC:

I swear this track is lining up perfectly with the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan track Bryce is playing on the main station right now.
  Fri. 5/13/16 12:34pm Dean:

According to the wikithing it's Dan Dugmore.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 12:35pm Doug Schulkind:

This Min Bul cut is monstrously good.

Dan "Blue Bayou" Dugmore.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 12:51pm Uncle Michael:

They're all old ones...most from about 1924-26.
  Fri. 5/13/16 12:52pm Dean:

On the record. The one clip I've seen, from a CBS morning show, featured a performance not including pedal steel, and the guitarist didn't look like Dugmore.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 12:55pm Lane Gray:

Michael, it's in the first couple minutes.
Fatso sings the Jimmy Durante for just a few bars
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 12:56pm coelacanth:

Who's fatso? I have no idea what you're saying, Lane.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 12:58pm Lane Gray:

I put a live thing of her doing Heartaches by the Number live on my FB.
The player is playing a Carter, but the amp is underpowered, kinda overdriving

Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:03pm Lane Gray:

One of my favorite Biblical passages is right after the flood, Noah becomes a vintner grows a vinyard, makes wine and gets drunk, all in one sentence. I guess he really needed a drink.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:19pm Doug Schulkind:

That sizzling trombonist playing on the stream was Mark Weinstein, no relation to David Weinstein, host of Give the Drummer Radio's latest new show, Ridgewood Radio. It will debut on the stream this coming Wednesday, 2-4pm
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:19pm coelacanth:

  Fri. 5/13/16 1:19pm Dean:

Good one! Kinda ironic, too, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:24pm coelacanth:

Brian in UK, is "skewiff" means "wonky", what does wonky mean? i've heard/seen it used in the states, but thought it too was a british term. no?

Anyone else having trouble with the pop up player? Keeps going out on me (I'm able to restart it without any problems, but it's an annoyance).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:27pm Brian in UK:

@coelacanth well you know it just aint right. It was alright this morning when I last looked at it now I can't get the darn thing to work properly. It's one degree off centre.

Well I guess they are both from over here, just thought wonky would be understood more better.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:29pm Doug Schulkind:

@docjazz
Pop-up working fine over here. Sometimes it requires re-starting when the stream switches between shows. Maybe when Uncle Michael lost his connection to the stream, that same problem arose when he re-connected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:29pm Brian in UK:

Uncle Ian Hunter's invention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:30pm coelacanth:

right. that's how i've heard wonky used. i like your example!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:30pm mauri:

Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:31pm Lane Gray:

Doctor, Tunein pulls it in just fine
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:33pm coelacanth:

pop-up never works on my ancient windows machine, which i'm on now. it works fine on my ancient macbook, but stops at the end of every show, curiously.
  Fri. 5/13/16 1:33pm Dean:

OED has an entry for "skew-whiff": Askew, awry (lit. and fig.).

And "wonky": Of a person: shaky, groggy; unstable. Of a thing: faulty, unsound; unreliable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:34pm coelacanth:

Louie Jordan was a God.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:35pm Jeff Golick:

Hard not to sing along to this one, much to the dismay of my co-workers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:35pm Brian in UK:

@Dean never used wonky to refer to people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:35pm Brian in UK:

BOK BOK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff, tell them to be on their way.
  Fri. 5/13/16 1:36pm Dean:

Here in the US "wonky" is more often used to refer to nerdy people.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:37pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:37pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:38pm Brian in UK:

The term 'wonk' seems to have entered the language recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/13/16 1:38pm doctorjazz:

Love this set...Louis Jordan is indeed Royalty of R & B

The pop up ALWAYS stops working at the end of a show, I take that as a given. But, I've had it do the same weird thing (sort of like a skipping vinyl record) during the show a couple of times. Not a big deal, easy to restart, but thought I'd mention it.
  Fri. 5/13/16 1:38pm Dean:

From a 1981 Times Literary Supplement article: "The vast majority of murderers are ipso facto acutely wonky, and most frequently wonky in dispiriting and unimaginative ways."
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:40pm geezerette:

"Policy wonk" should perhaps be "Policy Wank" then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:41pm coelacanth:

haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:41pm Brian in UK:

Dean. Language is a many splendoured thing.

@geezerette that was on the tip of my tongue (so to speak)
  Fri. 5/13/16 1:41pm Dean:

"Wonk" meaning nerd appears in 1962 in Sports Illustrated, then again eight years later in Erich Segal's Love Story! But there are earlier uses with different meanings, e.g., 1938 Australia, "a white man."
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:42pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:48pm coelacanth:

Brian UK, now i wonder if "wank" has a slightly different meaning than what it's accepted to mean here. (though i probably shouldn't ask!)
(...just as when i once told my australian girl friend, "i have to go get my fanny pack." and she started laughing histerically!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:49pm Brian in UK:

Just been reading Elmore Leonard's Western Stories. Great book. Never realised that he wrote 3:10 to Yuma.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:49pm Webhamster Henry:

A wonk is someone who "knows" backward. Or maybe that's a swonk.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:50pm geezerette:

They don't sound gleeful. Love the offensive movie cliche "Indians coming" piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:50pm coelacanth:

ha! good one Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:51pm mauri:

wonky skewiff, wanky spewjizz
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:52pm Rich in Washington:

That's great. It reminds me of this Coast Guard men's chorus album I have. They do a couple of really rigid takes on rock songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:52pm Brian in UK:

coelacanth wank in the Biblical sense is Onan's work.

Fanny is either front or backwards facing depending where you come from methinks.

I used to have a sidecar.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:52pm geezerette:

Brian the '50s Glen Ford "3:10 to Yuma" is a good film.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:52pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

You always play the songs I thought I'd forgotten. Thanks.

Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:53pm Rich in Washington:

This Sailcat song is vaguely Nilsson-like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/13/16 1:53pm doctorjazz:

So, is it official? Is "Ghost Riders..." the new "Last Thing On My Mind"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

Unofficial...for a while...till I tire of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 1:55pm coelacanth:

that song, which i forgot about, i thought was Paul Simon when it was an am hit. ...but yes, quite Nilsson-like.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 1:56pm ndbob:

ah always good to hear a rodent song
  Fri. 5/13/16 1:57pm Dean:

Disney hears this song, they're gonna sue.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:01pm Brian in UK:

The old Sid Vicious joke of the fan hitting the shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:03pm coelacanth:

BrianUK so a band called "the wankers" is a variation on a band called "the humpers", essentially? i think here it's used to mean "self-gratification".
(please excuse me people, i like to know the correct meaning of things!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

The gif wishes to be activated for this track.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:04pm geezerette:

haha...doin' what?
  Fri. 5/13/16 2:04pm Dean:

One entry in OED refers to it as "self-abuse."
  Fri. 5/13/16 2:05pm Dean:

I wonder if Part II of "it" is any different from Part I of "it."
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:05pm geezerette:

they're giving each other back rubs, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:06pm Brian in UK:

I think the self abuse refers back to Onan who spilled his seed and that was not necessarily self gratification.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:06pm coelacanth:

hahaha! self-abuse! crazy! imagine how over-populated the world might be if ...

The noun of the collective for Bankers is "wunch."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:09pm Brian in UK:

The word WANKER is wonderfully anglo saxon in its primitive sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:09pm Brian in UK:

A Spill?
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:10pm Lane Gray:

A wunch of bankers
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:10pm geezerette:

Those Saxons had sharp Angles.
  Fri. 5/13/16 2:11pm Dean:

Origin of "wank" is unknown. Could be "echoic," claims Eric Partridge in his 1951 slang dictionary. I'd never heard of "wanker's doom," which is "disability caused by excessive masturbation." Great band name, though.

Pedal steel AND pedal steel with sitar bar together. Cool (sitar with sustain is usually us...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

That's why I played it, Lane.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:21pm Jeff Golick:

Is this a slightly different version than was on the original album?
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:22pm Jeff Golick:

Or maybe I'm thinking of some alternate version that I've heard more recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

It's gotta be...or horribly remastered.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:22pm ndbob:

Have you heard Stan Hitchcock's "Honey, I'm Home"?
Hal Rugg all over it with his sitar bar (he just got it that day)

Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:38pm Lane Gray:

Take care, Geezerette
  Fri. 5/13/16 2:38pm Kris Holmes:

ha, we were supposed to "teach" this dude "how to DJ" in NYC last year when I was on tour. But he cancelled last minute. Might have been fun.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:39pm Little Danny:

That would have been a beautiful Coral electric sitar. Also used by Joe South.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:39pm ndbob:

ah - double entendre dentist song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

Pokey, Kris?
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:40pm Lane Gray:

You sure, Danny? It sounded like a bit more sustain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:41pm coelacanth:

that's quite a cavity you've got there!
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:42pm Lane Gray:

Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:44pm Little Danny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:50pm coelacanth:

i always liked Del Shannon's "needles & pins" (maybe because it was my first?), but Jackie's version might topple Del's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 5/13/16 2:50pm Kris Holmes:

  Fri. 5/13/16 2:51pm Dean:

Trump's campaign theme song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/13/16 2:51pm doctorjazz:

Don't think I ever heard Jackie DeShannon's version before, like how she goes off with it at the end. Her's is the original, I believe. Love The Searchers take as well.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:51pm JP from KC:

It would be interesting to hear a DJ set by Pokey LaFarge... I bet it would appeal to the likes of us, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/13/16 2:52pm doctorjazz:

Coming to that time again, thanks, Michael, have a great weekend, all!

You know what would almost certainly NOT be interesting to hear? This: www.factmag.com...
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:55pm ndbob:

Jackie's version of Needles and Pins did chart - top 100 but not top 40 - a hit in a few places like LA
  Fri. 5/13/16 2:55pm Kris Holmes:

yeah that made me throw up in my mouth a bit when it flashed up on fb :(
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:57pm JP from KC:

This is unfounded speculation, but I imagine Kylie Jenner's DJ set would probably sound like Randy Marsh's Steamy Ray Vaughan performances on South Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/13/16 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

I can't use it in my bidness.
Avatar Fri. 5/13/16 2:58pm geezerette:
