Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Happy Third year of doin' the Hinky Dinky, Uncle Michael! Can't believe I missed Bob Dorough! That was always one of my favorite Schoolhouse Rock tunes. That and "The Energy Blues."

Schoolhouse Rock! did noble service in introducing young me to some fine crooners.
Avatar Fri. 5/6/16 12:29pm listener james from westwood:

I always thought this song was obliquely about Burroughs, esp. due to the drugs, wife shooting and "Willy Lee." Not so! Joan Vollmer outlived this song by 3 years.

Happy Anniversary! Cubs are rolling and so is Hinky Dinky!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 1:32pm Mike East:

anybody remember that farside comic that made reference to Mac the Knife? I remember scratching my head for years over that one because I had never heard the song and it made no sense without that knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 1:33pm Mike East:

@chromaphone - mac the knife is from threepenny opera
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 1:33pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 1:45pm northguineahills:

Pretty insane for Nels Cline.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 1:46pm doctorjazz:

Ahhh, love these mellow vocal groups...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 1:50pm doctorjazz:

Wild how different Cline sounds on his own (or in situations like Mischief and Mayhem) than he does with Wilco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 1:50pm Parq:

Mike East, if I remember correctly (a big if, given my age and track record), Ernie Kovacs used the original German recording of the Ballad of Mack the Knife as a soundtrack to some of his wordless sketches. Might that be what you mean?
  Fri. 5/6/16 1:52pm Dean:

We have Jonathan Swift to thank for Three Penny Opera.
  Fri. 5/6/16 1:59pm Dean:

Jazz Record Mart reopened, new location. I'll be there in mid-July.

mauri!

Yeah Dean...need to visit it myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:03pm Mike East:

@Parq - all I know is that when I was researching Mack the Knife to figure out that farside comic (when the internet finally came around), I learned that the original song was from The Threepenny Opera.
Avatar Fri. 5/6/16 2:04pm ndbob:

Right Mike - and the original lyrics are pretty brutal
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

Grant Green - guitar
James Spaulding - alto saxophone (tracks 1-5)
Joe Henderson - tenor saxophone (tracks 1-5)
McCoy Tyner - piano
Bob Cranshaw - bass
Elvin Jones - drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

This would be track #2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:05pm Parq:

Oh, *that* kinda comic. Sorry. You mean this one?
s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:08pm doctorjazz:

Great track, big Henderson fan...
on a different track...there is a "Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration" coming to PNC Bank Performance Center in NJ this summer. Anyone know anything about it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:09pm Parq:

Why is jazz the only type of music where radio announcers run through all of the musicians on a track? Back in the Mesozoic era, when I was on college radio, I tried doing the same thing with major-label rock tracks and had to stop because I couldn't keep from laughing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Because bands weren't static and even if you cared, how could you keep up? Because on a given session, many sidemen were well-known leaders?
  Fri. 5/6/16 2:10pm Dean:

Cripes, imagine having to back-announce a performance of Mahler's 8th symphony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:11pm doctorjazz:

Because the solo is a big part of the performance, so just knowing that the pianist is the leader but not who took that wild tenor solo is incredibly frustrating...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

I don't think I'd play Dave Edmunds' "Sweet Little Lisa" without mentioning that Albert Lee is a guest soloist on it. I think it's similar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:13pm northguineahills:

Or, back announcing Stockhausen's "Gruppen für drei Orchester" for three symphony orchestras....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:14pm Artie Haywire:

This is reminiscent of the programming on that SomaFM "Mission Control" station that plays chill out techno with actual NASA comms recordings mixed in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

ooh...I'd like that...for 20 minutes!
  Fri. 5/6/16 2:16pm johnk77:

albert lee was totally cool

probably still is
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

I can get from Grant Green to ABBA in two segues.
Avatar Fri. 5/6/16 2:17pm Jeff Golick:

I can't find it now, but I once knew of a cartoon that had as it's caption something like, "If all djs were jazz djs." You can no doubt get the joke from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:18pm Artie Haywire:

Right! I'll put it on at work when all the other stations are irritating me (Hah!), and it's smooth and good - until it isn't. For extra fun, try and guess which mission you're listening in on. somafm.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/6/16 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

I'm guessing the punchline is "every show would begin with one record and end with three hours of bloviating."

according to the internets, not only is Roger Nichols a multi instrumentalist, he is also a jeweler
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:26pm Webhamster Henry:

Three Penny Opera really was popular .. running off-Broadway (when the whole idea of Off Broadway was new) . It ran about 7 years, which back then was a blockbuster! If a show lasted more than a few months it was considered a hit!
ThreePenny was a flop in English in the early 30s, Blitzstein's new (less edgy) lyrics, and also more familiarity with Americanized Kurt Weill probably helped a lot.

Far out...maybe an unfinished song or an idea he expanded on later. Love that.

Got my colonoscopy recently. (TMI? Tough shit.) The report produces real opportunity for band names, e.g., Tortuous Colon, Hepatic Flexure...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/6/16 2:56pm Artie Haywire:
