Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Happy Birthday Uncle Michael
I wonder if anyone has bothered to collect the songs sung at birthdays before the "Happy Birthday To You" song was written. I recall my first grade teacher had one that started with a descending melody, going: "Light the candles on the cake, __ is __ years old today ...." but I don't recall the rest of it.

I just got one of those Stanford Marching Band LPs and it has a cover of The Beatles Birthday. I don't think it's available online anywhere.
Coincidentally, I plan on ripping the LP today.

Honey Pie. Just throwing that out there.

Don't Pass Me By.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:28pm JP from KC:

Honey Pie was meant to be terrible. That doesn't count.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:28pm Webhamster Henry:

Do Swingles pronounce it as in English or as in French ("Swang-luh")?
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:28pm Rich in Washington:

I love that Slovene industrial band Laibach chose to cover Let It Be in its entirety because they claimed it was the Beatles' worst album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:29pm Mike East:

As a parent, that gif breaks my heart. Happy Birthday Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:30pm JP from KC:

I will say, Don't pass me by was a worse Ringo composition than Octopus's Garden. Maybe that's just because Octopus's Garden was better executed by the whole band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/20/16 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

Mike! I don't have kids! I don't care!
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:31pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I don't mind "Birthday" at all, it's a rockin' song. Worse than that? Oh so many to choose from. "Yellow Submarine", "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Revolution 9", "Octopus' Garden", "Hey Jude", "Wild Honey Pie". I admit I cheated and googled "worst beatles song" for reminders. (Yes although I'm a baby boomer, I am not a Beatles lover, why do you ask?)
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:31pm chromaphone:

Always liked Beatles' Birthday. Many songs of theirs that I think are worse. Worst song = The Long & Winding Road
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:32pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Love your comment to Mike! The kid didn't even get burned and it breaks your heart??
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:32pm Goyim in the AM:

Run for Your Life is the most inexcusable Beatles song. I say nothing here about its artistic merit.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:32pm Flash Strap:

I love Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9

run for your life is worst beatles song
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:32pm Flash Strap:

Hey Goyim! we agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:32pm Parq:

JP from KC at 12:38, that's a good point and it occurred to me. That's why I added the "throwing it out there" disclaimer.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:33pm ndbob:

@Goyim Definitely the worst Beatles lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/20/16 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Lizzie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:33pm annie:

hey, wait, JP, i LOVE those two songs! not that i really had a thing for the beatles, but i found 2/3s of their tunes not bad. "In My Life" is one of my faves.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:34pm Flash Strap:

I actually think Octopus' Garden gets monstrously short shrift. I like it a lot for what it is
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:35pm JP from KC:

Which two songs, Annie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:35pm Parq:

Also throwing this out there: I have had too much fun at too many birthday parties where "Birthday" was drunkenly blasted to have a strong negative opinion of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/20/16 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

Parq, that's saving it with irony.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:37pm Flash Strap:

I think that those type of experiences redeem "birthday" as a song, Parq, but maybe not as an album track
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:37pm Goyim in the AM:

Flash Strap -- yet I think the Headcoatees' gender-switching cover is pretty badass. Power dynamics, man.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:37pm Flash Strap:

or what UM said
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:38pm annie:

"Honey Pie" and "Don't Pass Me By"
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:38pm Flash Strap:

Goyim: agreed, totally different ballgame. That's saving it with total inversion
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:39pm JP from KC:

My feelings exactly, Flash Strap. I think that's why it's better executed than Don't Pass Me By. Don't Pass Me By takes itself way too seriously as a song. Octopus's Garden is a fun little ditty. that's all it was meant to be, and as such, it's pretty good.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:40pm chromaphone:

Another worse Beatles song is Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! But Long & Winding Road is the worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:40pm JP from KC:

Woah, now. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite is a great song.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:41pm Flash Strap:

I – uh – like pretty much all Ringo's songs

you know what else? I THINK PIGGIES IS FFFUCKIN GREAT
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:42pm annie:

right on flash!
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:44pm chromaphone:

When I first started getting into the Beatles in 2nd grade my favorite song was Don't Pass Me By.

love this clown set to death, Uncle Pagliacci
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:45pm JP from KC:

I like Honey Pie as well, Annie. But Honey Pie is clearly just the band having fun. It' a goof-off track that just sort of ended up on the album, like the opening to Two of Us.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:45pm Lane Gray:

They didn't have many clunkers
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:46pm ndbob:

Many people I know would put Hey Jude at the bottom

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:47pm coelacanth:

greetings Uncle M Happy Birthday again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:47pm Mike East:

@Sweet Corn Lizzie - I think he did get burned...even if he didn't, he goes from elation to sobbing, which I've seen first hand, and that really sucks...especially on the kid's bday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:48pm annie:

i never really bought into the Beatles hype, and preferred ringo to the rest of that bunch. each had his own style, though, which is what they were heading towards anyway, individuality. oh yeah Hoeny Pie was just for fun..i love its lilting despair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:49pm JP from KC:

I'm with you, Lane. I'm sort of indifferent to Hey Jude. It never registered with me like it apparently did with the masses.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:49pm chromaphone:

Thank god you didn't play Tears of a Clown :) You ever heard Patches the Clown by Deadbolt? classic.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:49pm ndbob:

@Melinda - me too - I remember getting the Something Else LP and hearing it for the first time
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:49pm Jeff Golick:

I agree with Lane that there were surprisingly few clunkers, but I have to say that most of my least faves are on Sgt. Pepper. I just don't get/like that record very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:49pm annie:

Mike East, i was thinking that he wore at least 4 differing emotions as that whole thing came down.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:51pm chromaphone:

I'm with you Jeff. Although there are a couple gems on it.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:51pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/20/16 12:52pm melinda:

@Bob: I've heard it before but I don't know if I knew it was Dave Davies.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:52pm 67tele:

'rather see you dead little girl than to see you with another man' was stolen from Elvis' 'Baby Lets Play House' right?
  Fri. 5/20/16 12:52pm V Priceless:

I did read a Lennon interview once where he admitted he hated that song more than any other he wrote.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:53pm Rich in Washington:

I have been threatening for decades to do an all Ringo song Beatles cover project and call it The Dung Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:53pm annie:

next week's assignment: submit your top 10 fave Beatles tunes and top 10 least faves. ahh, the hitch would be before the break-up? or after?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:53pm Goyim in the AM:

"I'd rather see you dead, little girl/than to be with another man" is a line from "Baby Let's Play House", so there may have been some ironic distance happening.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

Agreed, @chroma. I'm a horrible, horrible singer (maybe one Hoof 'n' Mouth will reveal this, one day) but "Lovely Rita" somehow falls into my super narrow range. Mostly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 12:53pm JP from KC:

That Lyric in Getting Better always bothered me. Just like Springsteen's phrase "You ain't a beauty but hey, you're all right," in Thunder Road always seemed really unnecessarily rude to me.
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:53pm geezerette:

oooo...this is creepier than the Beatles!
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:54pm ndbob:

@melinda - I remember hearing about the single release as by Dave, but since it came out on a Kinks LP at the same time it's kind of both
Avatar Fri. 5/20/16 12:54pm Dominick:

It's partially a homage to Elvis' "Baby Let's Play House" and the sentiment wasn't all that alien at the time. After all there were songs like "Git to Gittin'", "Better Not Burn My Beans", and several thousand C&W songs

I can't hear Little River Band without thinking of Will Farrell in "The Other Guys"

I don't know that thing, JP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/20/16 2:48pm JP from KC:

That's the movie he did with Mark Wahlburg (sp?) where they play cops, and Michael Keaton is their captain who keeps quoting TLC song lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/20/16 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

Missed out on that joy, I guess.

They make a surprisingly good comic duo. Anyway, Will Farrell's character is a mild-mannered guy who drives a prius and listens to Little River Band. Mark Wahlburg's character gives him shit about it. Nothing particularly funny about that particular scene. I just remember that line from the movie when I hear or see the name Little River Band. And the award for least interesting story in the comments section goes to...

@Dean: My brother was trying to describe "The Princess Bride" to his wife one day, and the first thing he said was "So Columbo's reading this book to Wonder Years..."
