@JeffG - I enjoyed D:O Radio (including bonus hour) on Sunday. Was errand running so didn't get a chance to comment on board. P.S. I laughed at your wife comment about giving your listeners an Easter treat with one less hour of music. Cruel!

wow, that Tom Brady track was something else. didn't realize he recorded Instruments of Happiness - must've been during offseason? OH WAIT, /TIM/ Brady. (Tom's cousin, presumably.)

Hi Tony , great start !

This is making me put off the inevitable. (That being a nice plate of Home Style Tofu with chilies.)
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Instruments of Happiness is the name of the guitar ensemble that performs this Antoine Berthiaume track and the thing by Tim Brady heard earlier. The group is Canadian and was founded by Brady.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:22pm βrian:

Ear mushrooms, speaking of fungi.

@ Tony - Hackett's in your hood this eve, FYI
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:26pm Mayuko:

Listening!
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Both this Berthiaume and the Brady sort of seem like an extension of the sound of proggy guitarists like Steve Hackett or Steve Howe.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Mayuko!!
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:27pm Jeff Golick:

I thought is was death and Texas.
  Tue. 3/29/16 12:27pm Dean:

@VP: I listened to some Hackett just yesterday, including the reissue of Voyage of the Acolyte with a live "Ace of Wands." Nice.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:30pm βrian:

Feeling phlegmatic today, are we?
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, both phlegmatic and Phlemish.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:31pm βrian:

Pommes frites and Mort Subite. That'll fix ya up!
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:32pm V Priceless:

@ Dean - cool! The live experience is top notch - perfect balance of solo and lesser-played Genesis faves this time out.
  Tue. 3/29/16 12:34pm gerardo:

Phlemish enough for a Mort Subite ? bont think so
  Tue. 3/29/16 12:35pm Dean:

I thought the full quotation was, "Nothing is inevitable except death, taxes, and platitudes."
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:35pm βrian:

Oh, it's all one big slurry over there.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:36pm βrian:

"Death, Texas, and dead platitudes in the middle of the road."
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Lewis! Yeah, remember the good old days when all the kids made out to the Art Bears? The memories....
  Tue. 3/29/16 12:49pm Dean:

"Remember the good old days when all the kids made out to the Art Bears?" Yes, in fact I do.

Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:20pm βrian:

Alpena? How could Wikipedia be that far off?
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:27pm Cecile:

where are these surprise guys from?
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:28pm Cecile:

I think Alpena and Slaginaw are spitting distance in the scheme of things.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Surprise were from Saint Louis, MO. They only put out that one album.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:30pm Cecile:

wow, that guitar player had a great European folk flavor to his solos. I usually only hear that stuff IME in European bands and such.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:31pm Guido from Cologne:

Hi Tony!
Funny I just switch in!
There is a great version of "Gelin Aysem" by singer Alpay from 1965 which I have.
this sounds like a prog-re-treatment.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:31pm Cecile:

that's really cool. That's why I tune in and post here. Another new lead in the mystery of music.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Guido! Don't know that version ... I will seek it out.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:32pm Guido from Cologne:

... this one here is missing the basic e-piano figure I must say.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:34pm Guido from Cologne:

It's about his bride named Ayse
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:38pm Jeff Golick:

Your diacritics game is on point today, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:38pm Guido from Cologne:

here is the Alpay version:

Very bad quality. The original vinyl is way better.
maybe it's about time to start digitalising my Turkish single collection.
You'll be on my recipients list.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff: Thanks to cut-and-paste and autofill!
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

@ Guido: That'd be great! It's funny how melodies that seem exotic and novel to people from an outside culture can actually be extremely familiar to people from a given country.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

Is this Grow Fins set, uh, worth a deep dive?
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:46pm Cecile:

yes, Jeff it is. It also has some super rare live footage.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:47pm Jeff Golick:

Oh, thanks, @Cecile. I've had it in my sights for years now, but never took the plunge.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

I think it definitely is worth a listen -- particularly if you don't have any Beefheart boots. There's a lot of overlap with earlier boots -- although, of course, the sound quality is better on Grow Fins.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:48pm Cecile:

I bought it like the week it came out. What Tony said, and also the packaging is gorgeous.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:50pm Guido from Cologne:

"Grow Fins: Rarities" is great for the booklet, which tells all about the starving band and the misstreatment of John French.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:52pm Cecile:

yes, that part of it makes me sad.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Oops -- this track is not in fact from 1871 (you'd never guess). Will fix in a sec.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:07pm Jeff Golick:

Unexpected percussive keyboard! (?)
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:11pm Guido from Cologne:

Percussive organ was a speciality of John Lord
  Tue. 3/29/16 2:14pm Dean:

Howells! Marvelous.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:19pm Jeff Golick:

I've had this "Atom Bomb" record in a saved for later pile and now think I'll need to get it. Curse you, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:20pm Tony Coulter:

It's really, really good, Jeff. You've gotta get it!
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:23pm Jeff Golick:

Ok, then. It's a very reasonable (almost criminally so) $6.49 download at emusic.
  Tue. 3/29/16 2:27pm Dean:

Criminally reasonable...I can get behind that.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:34pm Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Sorry to say, there will be no Give the Drummer Some show tonight. Happy to say, Jesse Kaminsky will start Kaminsky Kamoutsky an hour early and cover for me. Jesse will be live on the Drummer Stream, 6-10pm. Here is his playlist page: wfmu.org...

Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:42pm βrian:

Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:43pm βrian:

I hear some of Joni's maneuvers here. Or vice versa. Lovely.
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

OOPS! Scratch what I said on mic -- just read Doug's announcement above. Drummer Some is off today, and Jesse is covering for Doug -- so it's four hours of Jesse, beginning at 6:00. Here's the playlist: wfmu.org...

Great band name: The Lalo Schifrins
Avatar Tue. 3/29/16 2:57pm V Priceless:
