Belated thanks to Chris from New York for his generous post-show pledge!!

And, of course, many, many thanks to everyone who pledged over the past two weeks!!!

And to those about to pledge!! Hiya Tony and listeners.

S'up'ers ready! Heya, Abby!

For my money, M Squared was the greatest Australian label of the '80s: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

Free trip to the moon for anyone who can ID the LP underneath today's cassettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:33pm Cecile:

I think I have some stuff on Fast Forward magazine somewhere. I have some Aussie books on the no/new wave and punk of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:34pm Cecile:

I knew about M Squared but never heard anything from them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:35pm Cecile:

Tony, do you know the Australian band Tactics?
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Cecile!

I used to have a couple more issues of Fast Forward, but traded then away ages ago, unfortunately.

M Squared is the best.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Don't know Tactics, no. Any good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:37pm Cecile:

Yeah, imagine Talking Heads if they played strange, robot, deconstructed dub reggae. And made less sense lyrically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:37pm Cecile:

I'm not much of a THeads fan, but Tactics are good. Their My Houdini is a classic.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

I'll look for them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:39pm Cecile:

they have a compilation that came out, and in typical perverse fashion, singer David Studdert sequenced them completely randomly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:42pm Cecile:

You do know them!

Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

Jeez! Guess I'm getting senile. Thanks for turning me on to my own record collection.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Ah, yes, I see I took those tracks from this fine comp: www.discogs.com...

Don't have any full releases by them.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Or "Watch My Hands" anyhow....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 12:55pm Cecile:

The Tactics compilation Sound of the Sound is pretty damn cool.
Avatar    Tue. 3/22/16 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

Fascinating stuff so far!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Now I'll definitely look for it! Thanks for the tip/reminder!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you're enjoying it, James!

I knew work was keeping me from something! Hey Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/22/16 1:02pm JtotheK:

Slapping Flesh was very enjoyable!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, VP!!
  Tue. 3/22/16 1:07pm Dean:

When Sandy Pearlman was interviewed on KROQ around the time of the second album he dedicated "Safe European Home" to me, "the world's greatest Clash fan." No kidding.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Impressive, Dean! (And greets.)
  Tue. 3/22/16 1:08pm Dean:

All downhill from there.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

Oops! Sorry for jumping the gun, tracklist-wise.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:17pm Tony Coulter:

Philip Perkins (on now) has some sure-to-be-good cassettes I hope to come across some day: www.discogs.com...
  Tue. 3/22/16 1:19pm Dean:

Do you know Tod Dockstader's series of "Aerial" recordings?
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

Haven't heard those, no. Really only know the early stuff.
  Tue. 3/22/16 1:22pm Dean:

The Perkins smelled a bit like them, but "Aerial" is much more dense.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

No, not that "Blade Runner. I checked!
Avatar    Tue. 3/22/16 1:23pm listener james from westwood:

Happy to hear Anderson here.
Avatar    Tue. 3/22/16 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

good points on Burroughs. Part carny barker, part mark warning you away. And after you've heard his Dr. Benway voice, it's tough not to hear it upon reading him on the page again.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, the way this tape mixes music, skits, and interviews is quite fun and intriguing. Wish more comps did that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:28pm Cecile:

And they did it all with razorblades and tape.
  Tue. 3/22/16 1:31pm Dean:

That's how Dockstader composed "Aerial," too.
Avatar    Tue. 3/22/16 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

Whoa, I have heard this "Bacillus" background Italo-disco elsewhere in some form on the station. Fabio IIRC used a version as bed music. Crazy! That's WFMU for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:35pm Cecile:

RELEASE THE BATS!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks to youtube videos, I now see bats as adorably cute rather than sinister.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:43pm Cecile:

where in Michigan? and who's on it? It kind of looks like something connected with WCBN's Special Ed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:44pm Cecile:

Just be careful, Tony. They are flying bags of rabies.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Wyandote, MI, wherever that is. No band names are given. There's just a long alphabetical list of everyone heard throughout the tape, and almost every name is unfamaliar. It's definitely got strong connections to Frank Pahl and Only a Mother, though.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:48pm Cecile:

Wyandotte is near Ann Arbor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:50pm Cecile:

is there a Mark Murrell listed?
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Nope, he's not listed -- but Lennon/McCartney are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/22/16 1:53pm Cecile:

awesome
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

I actually have four tapes in this mysterious series -- will play others here in the future.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

Or, umm, three cassettes. Volume Four is an LP and a lot easier to figure out: www.discogs.com...
  Tue. 3/22/16 2:07pm Dean:

This imposes some order on the chaos: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Tape-Number-One-A-Private-Studio-Compilation/release/7889262
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Dean. Of course, whoever added that to discogs couldn't figure out the performers/bands either.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Here's that link again, made all clicky-feely: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

The track titles that start with "Ode" or "Warped" are almost certainly by Pahl/Only a Mother.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

Along with many others, most likely. Some tracks really don't sound like them, though. Who knows!?!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Or perhaps Only a Mother didn't even exist yet.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:17pm Tony Coulter:

Guess I should just ask Frank Pahl and get him to explain everything. Though I like a good mystery now and again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/22/16 2:21pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the show today, but have to leave early -- thanks Tony!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

See you, JtotheK!!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:38pm V Priceless:

there's that mutated Tull riff! ha!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:39pm Tony Coulter:

Mutated Beatles coming up soon....

Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Jeff G!!
Avatar    Tue. 3/22/16 2:49pm Jeff Golick:

This is fun.
Hi, Tony.
Have been here, though first arrived as "Abby."
Avatar    Tue. 3/22/16 2:51pm listener james from westwood:

Enjoyed the heck out of today's hiss! Glad to have these dives into the archives!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:51pm V Priceless:

thanks TC!
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everyone! Stick around for this Pseudo Code track -- which first appeared on a cassette comp.
Avatar Tue. 3/22/16 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

See you next week, everyone!! Thanks for stopping by....
