Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I still think the music Irwin's been opening his show with for a good # of yrs. now sounds like Man From UNCLE. It may be that the TV show's theme was ripped off the show tune.

MELINDA!

Hi.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

Strong contender if not actually king. Hell, even the isolated vocal track of TOAC, which I've heard on FMU now and again, kicks all manner of ass.

Oh wow! I never noticed the bass work on Every Kinda People before!.

Hi.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 1:48pm chromaphone:

Nice Lane! I have actually never played a pedal steel. One day... Do they require a lot of maintenance? I played some lap at a gig a couple of weeks ago through my acoustic guitar amp and it actually sounded decent enough.
  Fri. 3/4/16 1:49pm Dean:

"inverted French 6-9 chord"--Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 1:49pm doctorjazz:

Do the French have their own inverted 6/9 chords? They can be so difficult...

James was good. I don't care that there's an element of fromage to him and Larry Welk, there was SOLID musicianship.

"More 'Starry Eyes' Achieved"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:14pm Stevel:

Starry Eyes is a nearly perfect song, up there with Another Planet and I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight, in my book, anyways.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:18pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Agree about Starry Eyes. Much more to my taste than TOAC.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:19pm Alex In Illinois:

When I was a teen, I checked out an Album by the Records from the local library. It had Starry Eyes" and "Teenarama" on it.
Fri. 3/4/16 2:23pm Listening Out There:

Guess the Fantasy Records bldg in SF is aka The House that Creedence Built
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:23pm Goyim in the AM:

Oh, the last truly BADASS Queen song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:24pm Brian in UK:

Quick hello, Uncle. Been listening.
Starry Eyes, reminds me of an English band around this time called Starry Eyed and Laughing. After the Dylan song. Bit of a Byrds biased band. Seem to recall having the first album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:24pm Stevel:

No Sleep Till Canaby Island is worth the $35 bucks or so. You could make three movies out of it, easily. Order it direct from the author (don't have the info handy.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:25pm Lane Gray:

Burritos' Sin City?
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:25pm chromaphone:

Don't feel like you have to play Have a Cigar UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

it's no longer that hard to buy, Steve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:25pm Stevel:

Yes, to badass-Queen song. Very satisfying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:26pm Stevel:

UM: That's great news. Really cannot recommend that book enough.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:27pm Lane Gray:

Alex, MSA is Morrell Shields Anderson (all three deceased). Makers of pedal steel guitars
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:28pm Brian in UK:

Hello Lane, tough ride?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

Actually Steve, maybe it is...and I was thinking of Bruce Thomas' book.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:28pm Alex In Illinois:

THanks Lane. I found the websites, one for the Pedal Steel Guitars, and one for the Super Slide, but could not find a section about their history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

This Skynyrd song was written to be performed at an industry party. Can you believe that shit?
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:30pm chromaphone:

I guess no one will be writing songs like these anymore since the music recording industry is dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:31pm Goyim in the AM:

I hope Ronnie's grim specter haunts the fakes going around with his band's name.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:32pm SeanG:

YAAHHH
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:32pm Stevel:

Skynyrd: As punk as the Pistols.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

SEAN!

Hi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

I agree, Steve.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:33pm Jeff Golick:

Did you play Spoon's version of this theme last week?
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:33pm listener james from westwood:

@chromaphone: Nowadays they'd have to be about iTunes, Spotify, Google/YouTube, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:33pm Stevel:

"...until they wished that we had doyied."
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:33pm listener james from westwood:

My dad has started watching HBO's "Vinyl." I haven't seen it but I'm helping by providing him footnotes for the era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:34pm Goyim in the AM:

RADIO ON!!
Fri. 3/4/16 2:34pm Listening Out There:

Van Morrison's contractual obligation album would fit into today's program, sort of...
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:36pm Lane Gray:

It's a smooth ride now, Brian. Bonehead cost me 3.5 hours earlier. Last night's ISIHAC was brilliant. One song to the tune of another: Sometimes When We Touch to Scotland the Brave and Bob the Builder to Girl From Ipanema.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff, I layed the b-side last week.

"contractual obligation" is its own theme.

RADIO ON!
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:36pm chromaphone:

It seems like right when the industry was peaking is when the most complaint songs appeared. I think the amount of money being bickered over now is much less. Hopefully Talyor Swift will write something about it... not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/4/16 2:37pm Goyim in the AM:

The Bang Obligation sessions partake of both themes in part, no? Royalty Check, Have a Danish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

bread up front

you want a sandwich?
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:40pm Alex In Illinois:

I had an idea about a decade or so ago, when I had one of those early large mp3 players made by "Creative" that recorded in mp3 and uncompressed wave file format. My idea was to digitally record concerts for unsigned bands, make mp3's of their songs, and sell their songs for them directly to fans from a web site.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:45pm chromaphone:

Wow, this bed music is clavinet overload. hilarious.

Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:56pm ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/4/16 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

The two songs might share a drummer...it's possible.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:58pm chromaphone:

I'm not hearing a kick drum at all.
Avatar Fri. 3/4/16 2:59pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, UM; glad to be here this afternoon!
