Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 10:57am Parq:

I are back. James, the book's discussion of the Bishop show wasn't extensive, so it's understandable that you don't recall it. What I loved most was his section on the birth and growth of Vegas. Something just really grabs me about that whole scene, even though I am not drawn personally to its values (cf. Seth McFarlaine).
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 10:58am chromaphone:

Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 11:04am listener james from westwood:

@Parq: Vegas's history and growth are both favorite topics of mine. The town, then and now, doesn't deserve to be tarred w/ that MacFarlane yutz. That he covered Sinatra at Lincoln Center for Frank's 100th is like accenting a Tiffany lamp with a blob of old chewing gum.

Yeh, McFarlaine being the avatar of all the Rat pack represented tells you everything you need to know about the current state of mainstream pop culture. It reminds me of a latter-day Loony Tune, in which Pepe LePew is asked to address himself to some lame task and compares it to "asking Charles Boyer to play the Fonz."

@chromaphone: Aside from some of the character designs and sight gags, his shows generally punch down and go the "I'm only offending to show how this is offensive!" route way too often for me. Plus I usually don't give a jot about the pop culture they spoof, so they consistently fall on my mental blind spot.

  Fri. 2/26/16 12:16pm Dean:

Brings to mind the joke:

A man goes to prison. The first night he hears someone yell out, "58!" and everyone in his cell block bursts out in laughter. The next morning at breakfast he asks another prisoner why everyone laughed when someone yelled "58". The other prisoner said that the same jokes get handed around and end up being assigned numbers. After a few months he had learned a good bit of these jokes and one night yells out "36!", which he knows is a particularly funny joke but is met by dead silence. The next morning he asks one of his fellow prisoners why no one laughed, since it is a particularly funny joke. The prisoner replied, "Some people just don't know how to tell a joke."

But you got three plays for the quarter. My favorite jukebox was the one at Al's Bar in LA. A band--Fear, Claw Hammer, Nervous Gender, what have you--would take the stage, perform a set, and close. Somebody would fire up the jukebox: Sinatra, followed by Violent Femmes, the Pistols...

  Fri. 2/26/16 1:16pm Dean:

Sunday at Down Home Records, JC played a Porter Wagoner greatest hits record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:17pm Listener Scott:

re Foreigner/Jaws, yes, I figured it was your intent to menace
  Fri. 2/26/16 1:18pm geezerette:

@ Uncle Michael:
No problem! Dontcha make no nevermind.
  Fri. 2/26/16 1:19pm Dean:

OED on "juke": Probably < Gullah juke, joog disorderly, wicked, of West African origin; compare Wolof dzug to live wickedly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

Right Dean...which is why no "juke joint" songs today. Juke Joint doesn't necessarily mean there's a Juke Box.
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

This is a gem of a track to come back to. How do, afternoon crew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:33pm Uncle Michael:

James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:43pm Mike East:

how was your lunch date, james?
  Fri. 2/26/16 1:48pm SeanG:

I'm with ya!
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

Excellent, thanks! Much discussion and catching-up. Though we agreed our server, a longtime dud, should consider a different career.
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

Hey, jukebox, don't knock being a coin collector. A lotta of connected guys made a lotta 'scarole back in the day working jukebox routes.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 1:52pm chromaphone:

Jukeboxes must have had built in reverb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:52pm Parq:

Who knew jukeboxes had such nice speaking voices? I never pictured one sounding like Boris Karloff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

He always wanted to be an ac-TOR.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 1:58pm chromaphone:

Wow, no idea Hardy did stuff like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 1:58pm Parq:

Very superstitious.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:13pm Ken in Tucson:

Apparently there are hardly any bad songs about jukeboxes.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:14pm chromaphone:

Maybe Jukebox Hero is the only bad one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Oh, you want bad ones?

Hey Ken!
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:15pm Lane Gray:

Dang. I forgot all about the Hinky Dinky. Was busy working on my MSA pedal steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

Well, it's not like you missed any C&W today.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:19pm Lane Gray:

Don't Stop the Jukebox, by Buzz Busby. The honky-tonkiest bluegrass guy...
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:20pm Lane Gray:

Bob Dunn was a MONSTER steel player...
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:21pm Lane Gray:

I'm gonna have to listen to this show later. Great selection, Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

Was this record earlier...sounded like a natl. Steel.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:24pm Lane Gray:

The Dunn? Naah. It's electric. Resonators don't have the sustain.
My buddy can groove your baking steel, I just asked him. He can do it this weekend, if you want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

It'll have to wait till after Marathon. Thanks.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:26pm chromaphone:

Speaking of acoustic slide, been listening to the Jerry Douglas/Peter Rowan album in my car lately. Digging it more than I have before.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:26pm Lane Gray:

No rush. He can do it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

this one might be bad!
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:31pm davefromtoronto:

i'm terrified that that loop behind you is gonna turn into the actual tune...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:31pm annie:

you've done a great job UM!!
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:33pm chromaphone:

I wish I had a Columbia Records ladle.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:34pm Lane Gray:

Please don't play A-11
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:34pm Leonardo:

Too late, Lane.

Yes Lane, too late!

Welcome late arrivals!
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:37pm davefromtoronto:

don't play B-17 either while you're at it...
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:37pm Dean:

Maybe Lane was requesting the tune by quoting it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:38pm annie:

is a nickelodeon the same as a jukebox?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

Nope, no matter what Teresa Brewer thinks, it's not!
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:39pm Dean:

A rhetorical question, annie? Or one concerning the ontology of musical devices?
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:39pm chromaphone:

It's too bad David Lee Roth said "record machine" instead of "juke box" in the song Jump, otherwise I'm sure we'd be hearing it today.
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:40pm johnk77:

tips on wolof
and peter rowan
great comments today
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:40pm Dean:

Really, it's too bad David Lee Roth said a lot of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

A Nickelodeon played motion pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:41pm annie:

actually, dean, yes.. a real question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:42pm doctorjazz:

Great track, this Jackie Edwards.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:42pm Lane Gray:

Perhaps I was requesting the Lloyd/Paycheck version. Country rarely got better than the Little Darlin Paycheck sides....
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:43pm Lane Gray:

Is this the grovelthon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:43pm annie:

cool, i had no idea.. only popular for about 15 years..so the song: "put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon" is misleading
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:44pm chromaphone:

Yea of all the bands I like, Van Halen may have the weakest lyrics in their songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:44pm doctorjazz:

So, we'll expect a jukebox instead of a band for hoof and mouth...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

Groveling is a couple weeks away Lane.

I'm going over my time!
  Fri. 2/26/16 2:46pm geezerette:

Ramblin' Jack Elliot used to say,"I ain't no jukebox" when people would shout out requests.
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 2:46pm Alex In Illinois:

@annie: unless someone wanted to spend more time watching more short motion pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:47pm annie:

the second line is.... "all i want is loving you and music music music..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 2:48pm annie:

creative license i guess
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 2:49pm Lane Gray:

Ahh. You're always welcome to preempt the computer shuffle.
And Paycheck sang about the Meanest Jukebox in Town...
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 2:49pm Alex In Illinois:

@annie: I was wrong. You are correct. The lyric is misleading. I had confused Nickelodeon with a Kinescope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

I played that too, Lane.
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 2:51pm Alex In Illinois:

. . . and I did not realize the next line referred to music.

@Rich the Wray's Three Track Shack double cd is the way to go. it packages this one with Beans and Fatback and Mordicai Jones. Will catch you right up.

I remember the Juke Box at the Shakey's Pizza when I was a kid. There was a sign next to it saying "No dancing".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 3:01pm Parq:

Were it possible, UM, I would send you over a nice hot cup of coffee and a piece of home made pie. Great job on the jukebox tribute (my daughter, as a tot, used to call it "the juice box"), and greater job still on your last minute sit in for Our Leader. Great weekend and great week to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 3:02pm Uncle Michael:

17 year-old Liza.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 3:02pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the thought Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/26/16 3:03pm doctorjazz:

Still going at 3:03-another hour, maybe? :)
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 3:04pm Rich in Washington:

I used to work at this shitkicker restaurant and lounge and every Saturday and Sunday morning used to have to muck out the empty lounge before all the drunks came shuffling back in. The juke box was my salvation. The guy that stocked it and collected the coins not only showed me how to make it play for free but also gave me the codes for the dozen or so records that weren't listed on the menu - mostly rock music.
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 3:05pm Rich in Washington:

NO!! KEEP GOING!
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 3:05pm ndbob:

excellent show UM!

Listening in bits and pieces today. Really fun show, always sad to hear the exit music
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 3:07pm chromaphone:

Thanks UM. That was a great 6 hours!
Avatar Fri. 2/26/16 3:09pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks for being our human juke box, Uncle Michael! This has been a delightful show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/26/16 3:10pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks everyone!
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 3:11pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, UM, for the huge show! Don't spend all those quarters in one place!
Avatar    Fri. 2/26/16 3:55pm Jeff Golick:

Was pulled away at the last half hour, but wanted to say hooray for the marathon session, and well done! Yuge!
