Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

This morning as I was listening to Morning Edition on my Local (WAMU) NPR station. They did a story about how all the grocery stores in Detroit were closing, and reflexively I thought: Someone should open a Hinky Dinky -- "put saving in your shopping cart"...

hell of a good idea!

As a college kid, I worshiped the ground Joni walked on. I'm much less enamored of her these days, but I give props and them some for the stunning contralto remake of "Both Sides" that is used in the move "Love Actually".

Looking through the list, I have "Limo" which I bought purely for Eddie Hazel's version of "California Dreamin", and "Pumping Vinyl" just for the cover.

I did download all of the Loss Leaders from that blogger, and tried to listen to them all in order. Found my interest waning somewhere around the mid-70s, and eventually skipped ahead to Troublemakers.

me too, Simon...me too.

Anyone recognize the voice-over talent?
  Fri. 5/22/15 1:02pm Dean:

Best I can find of a Marriott/Stewart connection is an article from July 1978 in NME describing an appearance by Marriott, under the pseudonym Matt Vinyl, with a band dubbed Blind Drunk at a London pub. "The repertoire included The Meters' 'Cissy Strut' with Stevie on keyboard, and Muddy Waters' 'I'm Ready,' retitled 'I'm Giddy' and dedicated to Rod Stewart."
  Fri. 5/22/15 1:02pm johnk77:

Paul Stookey?!!
  Fri. 5/22/15 1:06pm Dean:

Grain of salt: the article goes on to describe a similar surprise appearance by Alex Harvey. It claims he was, at the time in 1978, 104 years old. But there are photos, so it's probably legit. Another Hinky Dinky coinkidinky: the article above this piece on the page of NME is, "What Is this Thing Called Doll by Doll."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

I think I'll 'spain on mic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:06pm Stevel:

coelacanth: Likewise. I knew those adverts backwards and forwards. I'd perk up on the ones I knew, but never went for it.

Yes, Dom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:08pm coelacanth:

Rod had 4 Excellent solo albums,in my opinion. and was great prior to those...and his voice was killer.
...it was a big loss for me when he went lame- then "disco".

Talkin' 'bout Stan Cornyn with an associate, he reminded me that WB owned the back page of Billboard throughout the '70's. You would check out the WB ad before even looking at the front page.

Ah ha Rod talk. I remember seeing him in The Faces and they were the most amazing live act you could imagine. Bottle of whisky in one hand, mike stand in the other.

I should have said "Southern Rock." This is not Southern Rock, in any case.
Avatar    Fri. 5/22/15 1:23pm Alex In Illinois:

Thanks for the explanation Uncle Michael. I had heard of the idea of having one item priced to sell at a loss to bring the customer in the door, because the customer will likely make up for it in other purchases, but I did not know the term. I thought of it as bait but without the switch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:24pm coelacanth:

Mike E, i don't know what frame of mind i'd have to be in to like that album through & through, but i'm sure it has some gems. i feel like every album from smiler on might.

a callow yout'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:27pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:32pm coelacanth:

Oh my. Evan i did not know! i have to check that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:33pm Uncle Michael:

I never saw ABB till '92 and I saw a bunch of amazing live shows with Warren and/or Derek in the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:34pm efd:

Ha, there's been a Hydra single in my 45 box that I bring to my Show for the past few weeks now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

well, play it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:40pm coelacanth:

i must confess ignorance to any Allman band material since the early 80s. -the change away from blues & toward "southern rock" started immediately after Duane's passing- then solidified after Berry's passing; and i lost interest.
....i'm not totally closed though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

They came out the other end as possibly the best jam band ever. They smoked my gourd pretty regularly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:45pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, good news, Michael -- I found a new job only a block away from my old job. Still get to walk to work! Doesn't start for a week and a half, but that's what unemployment insurance is for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

Great news. Baking?
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 1:46pm ndbob:

Great Simon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:46pm pacific standard simon:

Yep, almost the same duties as before. Cleaner kitchen, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

I'm so glad that for all the great food we don't have in this area, we have one freaking great bakery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:53pm pacific standard simon:

I wish there was just one Chinese restaurant around here -- even a mediocre one. We do have bad Thai and meh Japanese and OK Mexican (just don't order the margarita!) -- but no Chinese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

I'll bet your less than mediocre Chinese is 5x better than our best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:55pm coelacanth:

i'd better get back to work! Great program Michael- Thanks!

later on,y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for hanging out, coelacanth.

I may have to learn to DIY. Either that, or take the boat into Seattle.
Avatar    Fri. 5/22/15 1:57pm Jeff Golick:

Holy cow, an ECM Loss Leader. Was ECM distributed by Warner Bros.?

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 1:58pm pacific standard simon:

Lyrically, this Lovecraft seems to be the product of one those fridge poetry magnet kits. And it works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

I think their twin lead vocals obscured a multitude of sins.
  Fri. 5/22/15 2:19pm johnk77:

Sire Records went with Warners
at least partly on the basis
of WEA distribution
which at the time was very strong
in North America
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 2:23pm efd:

Another in the list of songs I'd play on my show if I could!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I feel your pain, Evan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 2:25pm efd:

There's a reporter on one of the local newsradio stations here named Glenn Schuck, and for a while when ever I'd hear him wrapping up a report with "I'm Glenn Schuck" I'd say to myself "he just don't give a fuck."

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 2:42pm Uncle Michael:
