Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Alex, it isn't hard for the components of a crude AM receiver to occur together accidentally.

I used to be able to hear something that was probably WCBS, WNBC, or the two mixed when I just touched one pole of the cable from a dynamic microphone to a radiator -- I mean a heating radiator, not a xmitting ant.

Avatar Fri. 5/15/15 12:16pm Alex In Illinois:

Okay, I will need to accept that. I just don't like to use them.
I built crystal Amplitude Modulation radio, too, but I kind of cheated -- I bought a kit.

Oh, I did too, Alex -- Radio Shack.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:17pm Listener Robert:

All it takes is a resonant circuit -- and just about anything conductive is resonant at some r.f. --, a rectifier (diode), & a transducer to audio. Demodulation is not essential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/15/15 12:18pm northguineahills:

You don't want to go to Jacksonville, believe me, I lived there until I was 18.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:19pm Dean:

If I had a nickel for every time I said, "Demodulation is not essential..."
Avatar Fri. 5/15/15 12:19pm Alex In Illinois:

Tis is the best version of "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" that I have heard. This AL Gree and the Bloodstone number have great bass guitar+guitar+everything groovemanship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/15/15 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

Hi, Listener Robert! Hi NGH!
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:20pm Listener Robert:

The diode can occur accidentally in the form of 2 conductors that are different in material or even shape. All it takes is a somewhat different resistance to one polarity from the other. Bring 2 dissimilar metals in contact, and due to galvanic action between them, it is likely for one to develop an oxide coating at the jct., & there's your rectifier.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:21pm Dean:

Gilbert O'Sartre
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:22pm Listener Robert:

Transducing the signal into sound merely requires some part loose enough to vibrate. Alternatively, a spark can produce sound.

So the story about dental work's becoming a radio receiver is quite plausible. It probably hasn't occurred as often as claimed, though.

Avatar Fri. 5/15/15 12:23pm Alex In Illinois:

@Pacific Standard Simon: I got mine at the nearby Science Museum gift shop. I built an electric motor from a kit that I got there. I wish I had purchased a dissecting kit and a pickled tarantula to dissect, but by the time I has save up enough money for it, they had stopped selling it. Alright, I admit, maybe I was a little scared first.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:24pm Listener Robert:

This is how I believe Mahlon Loomis accidentally created wireless. He ran up 2 kites on wires, like Ben Franklin, a distance apart. One had a key to ground, the other a spark gap to ground. He thought he was closing a DC circuit when his signal at one was received at the other.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:24pm Dean:

Continuing the urine joke thread from Doug's show, you do know the initialism for Internet Protocol?
Avatar Fri. 5/15/15 12:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Urine big trouble, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/15/15 12:26pm pacific standard simon:

At least I'm not a pissant.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:28pm Dean:

More Humble Pie! "Thirty Days in the Hole"!
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:28pm Listener Robert:

He didn't have the theory, but what he actually had were resonant circuits. Actuated by the sky-ground DC potential, r.f. transients were created when he made & broke the cx. These were then received at the other station. He noted that the kites had to be at the same height. Of course that was because then the wires would be of equal length, hence resonant. He thought, however, that he was tapping a horizontal DC current at that altitude of kite, with ground return.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/15/15 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

Howdy, Henry!
Avatar Fri. 5/15/15 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

I hope Uncle Michael plays some Urethra, frankly.
  Fri. 5/15/15 12:29pm Listener Robert:

He tried to sell his invention during the Civil War to the Signal Corps, but they weren't buying. However, a century later Congress recognized Loomis as the inventor of wireless on the basis of his patent at the time.
Avatar Fri. 5/15/15 12:29pm Jeff Golick:
