How do, Tony and all! Looking forward to those Coult 45s!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Heya James!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Today's show -- or at leas most of it -- will be heavy on stuff from the '80s. Just because.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

So is my brain!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

I assume you mean the 1880s, Tony. Golden age for the roots of psychprog!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:02pm holland oats:

greets tony et al! i sense postpunksploitation in my future
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Doug! Actually, I meant the 2180s.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

Holland, O! You got it....
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:04pm Rich in Washington:

YAY! I can probably listen to the whole show uninterrupted today! My officemate is off today and I've got a large project which affords me the leeway to tell everyone to piss off.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Rich! You tell 'em: Piss off!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:05pm holland oats:

image: batman smoking up to unknown pleasures?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Yes! It's Joy Division Batman.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:10pm holland oats:

omg that's actually a thing
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

@Rich: Booyah! Enjoy with pride!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:17pm βrian:

This music is silly! Thank you, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:18pm listener james from westwood:

Always love hearing the music that was around during the 70s and 80s that I never had any exposure to. I get this vibe from Uncle Michael's excellent show, too, that alterna-70s I never heard through my radio at the time. Grateful for both your show and his!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

You're welcome, Sir βrian!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

... and Sir James!!!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:20pm holland oats:

@ljfw - ever check out the 'messthetics' series? many gems, many volumes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 12:20pm Carmichael:

Hiya Tony and faithful. Fashionably late to the event.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:21pm holland oats:

in a yacht no less
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:21pm Rich in Washington:

Ghostwriters was such a great, underrated band!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Capt. Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:23pm βrian:

@Doug: I like your [ʃaʀli] cartoon.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:24pm DCE:

hi all
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Recently discovered that Ghostwriters released a cassette in the mid-80s. Am very curious to hear that.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, DCE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 12:31pm PMD:

You really don't need a reason to play all 80's music.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, PMD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 12:42pm PMD:

Hi Ho! Met Daniel Flessas from KBOO at SF Tape Music Festival Friday. Keep Portland weird! ;-) No, very nice.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Don't know 'im. Rich probably does.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

With a little bit of tweaking, this '80s Bongos track could easily be from the late '60s.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:52pm holland oats:

lemon foggy
  Tue. 1/13/15 12:52pm Dean:

More precisely, this Bongos track sounds a bit like "Shake Some Action" period Groovies.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

AND -- this Crawling Chaos track certainly sounds very prog psychy, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 12:56pm PMD:

Loving the music btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 12:56pm Carmichael:

Mystic flute.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Dean, was thinking the same thing at that one point in the tune.
@Tony: Agreed on the Crawling Chaos
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

@ PMD: Glad to hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 1:00pm PMD:

Hi Carmichael! Coming to see Sex and Broadcasting and go to the meetup?
  Tue. 1/13/15 1:02pm Dean:

@ljfw and all: I might have posted here earlier about a Kickstarter project, already well funded, to produce a film about the revival of the Flamin' Groovies. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/211524940/the-incredible-flamin-groovies-0
  Tue. 1/13/15 1:02pm Dean:

Voice Farm belongs in this set.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

The Eternal Flame-ing Groovies?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:13pm Rich in Washington:

@PMD/Tony: Yes, I know Daniel. He is my radio crazyland mentor. My show was right before his (long running) show for many years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 1:13pm PMD:

@Rich great guy!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:15pm Rich in Washington:

Indeed! I don't think I would be on the radio, were it not for his outstretched hand, helping me aboard the hobo train that is KBOO.
  Tue. 1/13/15 1:22pm R. Roundtree:

Let me Vocalize this Sucka!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:22pm Rich in Washington:

CHROME!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:23pm βrian:

Exclamation!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:24pm Rich in Washington:

I played a bunch of this album the other night.
I've said this many times before but I wish present me could go tell 1980s me that Chrome was THE SHIT!
I have no idea why I didn't realize that back in the day.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:27pm Rich in Washington:

I mistakenly thought the Chrome comp came out in 2014 (probably because that's when I bought it) and included it erroneously in my 'best of 2014' list. Oh well. Why not?
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:28pm Tony Coulter:

Years are just an illusion anyway.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

This Steve Fisk is on my best of 2015.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:31pm Rich in Washington:

You can hear where Negativland sampled from this Fisk track.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:33pm βrian:

Went back to listen to Jim Fox, the other day. Love that, too.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:33pm Rich in Washington:

This is from when SST Records had a fairly diverse roster.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, even people like Zoogz Rift.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:35pm βrian:

Steve Fisk, Jim Fox … they sound like made-up names from a 70s TV detective show.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:36pm βrian:

But Zoogz … not so much.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:38pm listener james from westwood:

"Zoogz" could've been the name of some spirit Kolchak the Night Stalker had to exorcise.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

If I had made a "best of 2014" list this EE Tapes comp "Insane 80s" would have been on it. It just made it into the year, in December, I think.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:40pm Rich in Washington:

when the 90s Alterna-Bubble burst, I remember picking up tons of SST CDs and cassettes for dirt cheap, as they had gotten really wide distribution in somewhat mainstream retail outlets. Here in Portland OR, a retail chain opened long enough to cash in on the grunge/alternative thing, then transformed into a liquidation outlet when Cobain and company went the way of the post-Easter Easter duckling
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

"I lied to Bozo, told him a fib...."
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

I crush Bozo...
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:44pm Rich in Washington:

Such a great show, Tony! I'm running out of stars...
  Tue. 1/13/15 1:45pm Dean:

Originally Dangerhouse this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 1:45pm Carmichael:

Randy has that Ian Dury quality to him.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:46pm Rich in Washington:

Yes, Carmichael, with a hint of Wild Man Fischer.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

OK -- we'll be leaving the '80s for the final hour .... going backward and forward.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:03pm Rich in Washington:

Listen: Tony Coulter has become unstuck in time.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:04pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks for the big blast of 80s shtuff!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

It's those flashing disco ball lights -- they're disorienting!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

The original "Nevermind"!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:15pm DCE:

nice!
  Tue. 1/13/15 2:23pm Dean:

Damn. Missed Human Hands. The record was a mainstay on Al's Bar's jukebox.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

Funny that based on membership both Human Hands and BPeople can be considered LAFMS bands. The pop side of LAFMS!
  Tue. 1/13/15 2:32pm Dean:

I missed the connection at the time. Great flyers here from LA shows: https://www.flickr.com/photos/33135085@N02/sets/72157612020683232/detail/?page=4 E.g., playing with Monitor and NON on KPFK. Mighta heard that one.

This has been a great set! I always dig Ross Bolleter.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, NGH! Yes, RB and his decaying pianos are indeed great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/13/15 2:56pm Carmichael:

@PMD, would love to, but 1 drawback: I'm in California. Have been seriously thinking, though, about flying out for a vacay someday.
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

Enjoyed the show, Tony; thanks for the 80s tunes and before/beyond in the last hour!
Avatar Tue. 1/13/15 3:01pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, James ... and everyone else, for showing up. See yerz all next week!!
