Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Also, "having a lift put in" means something very different, especially if it's said by a woman.
  Fri. 10/3/14 12:13pm Dean:

Uncle Michael mentions Woo. I only heard about them yesterday. Routinely compared to Eno, Durutti Column, and Cluster, but I hear Anthony Phillips.

Parq, welcome! Dean! brian! Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 12:14pm Parq:

Wasn't that Billy Preston's first single, right after "Concert for Bangladesh" heightened his visibility? The sound was so familiar, that when I first heard it just now, I assumed it was a TV theme.
  Fri. 10/3/14 12:15pm Santos L Halper:

That Billy Preston coulda been a Rockford Files spin-off theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 12:20pm Parq:

Hmm, I forgot about Outta Space. That may have been it at that.

Preston was the first rock artist to do a concert at Radio City Music Hall. I was a summer employee at the Music Hall (people who work there never call it "Radio City") and one of the stagehands told me that, for more than a week before the concert, Preston would come every night after the last stage show was over and practice on the Mighty Hammond.

I make a point of at least pledging in October the cost of the postage on my box of swag from the Spring marathon.
Avatar Fri. 10/3/14 12:32pm northguineahills:

I sadly won't be pledging this silentish marathon w/ lack of employment and all of the money I've sunk into everything that entails in getting my wife's green card the last few weeks (boy the gov't requirements are a pain in the ass)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

parq, I'd love to see that but if I can, I don't know how.
  Fri. 10/3/14 12:39pm Dean:

No more INS. Now, in our age of DHS, it's ICE. Least they could do is issue Pepto-Bismol colored cards.

Avatar Fri. 10/3/14 12:46pm northguineahills:

@Brian: It's the Dept of Homeland Security (which ironically I'm interviewing for [yes, I'm that desperate]). Many of the requirements make no sense today. I don't know any of my married friends that have joint bank accounts, credit cards, etc (and that's just the tip of the iceberg)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 12:48pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 1:47pm pacific standard simon:

Rock it old school with a mortar and pestle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

You first. My arm gets weary.
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 1:49pm Alex In Illinois:

@Steelguitarlane: I use a mortar & pestle.
The electric coffee grinder is in a cabinet below the counter, and it is more difficult to clean, and I am more likely to break it. For some reason, I enjoy crushing the cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, cloves, or cumin seeds in the mortar & pestle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:49pm Mike East:

after hurricane sandy I had to grind my coffee with a mortar and pestle cuz we had no power...took a lot of elbow grease
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 1:51pm pacific standard simon:

Put the spices between two sub-woofers and play this set of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

Going full Michigan on your asses.

Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 1:54pm Steelguitarlane:

I'm with Michael. And we now have an unused grinder.
2 coolest wedding presents: an uncle got us a crazy huge sauteuse and my brother got us a self grinding coffee maker
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:54pm Brian in UK:

@Alex With you on both counts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:55pm Sue P.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:56pm Sue P.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:56pm Uncle Michael:

I'll bring it back. I promise!

Hi Sue.
  Fri. 10/3/14 1:57pm Dean:

Dogs' "Slash Your Face" would fit the Detroit theme nicely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 1:59pm Sue P.:

ha, no worries, UM, you are treating it right.
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 2:01pm listener james from westwood:

Lots of excitement out here. First responders streaking off to the north, multiple town sirens. Heard helicopters nearby.--never good. Went outside and saw 3 over the town to my north. News sez: may have been a dumptruck falling through a parking deck. I know of one they'd been doing work on, so maybe it was weakened during their labors. Scary; I go to that strip mall now and again for BBQ. Not worth my car or my life!!
Avatar Fri. 10/3/14 2:01pm northguineahills:

i have a small mortar and pestle for small jobs and a igneous molcajate for large salsa jobs.

I need to seek out that doc, Rich.

Hi Rich. Hi Steve.
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 2:06pm Alex In Illinois:

Another problem with the electric coffee grinder is that if you have music on, it can drown out the music. But with a mortar & pestle, you can grind in time to the music.
Avatar Fri. 10/3/14 2:07pm Rich in Washington:

I UM! Great set! Rocking my cell/cubespace as much as company policy allows!
  Fri. 10/3/14 2:08pm Santos L Halper:

Igneous Molcajate- the unreleased follow-up to Vincebus Eruptum
Avatar Fri. 10/3/14 2:08pm Rich in Washington:

The doc talks about Vincent and crew stalking Zappa until he signs 'em. Pretty great doc all around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:09pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:11pm Brian in UK:

Oligarchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

That's not what she said!

Mercer wrote those lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

The phrase is, for better or worse, "or a darkie."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:15pm pacific standard simon:

"Employees may listen to music with headphones or earbuds, but are reminded that rhythmic borborygmus is prohibited in the cubicles."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:15pm Brian in UK:

Thought she said a Russian Oligarchy. Easy mistake to make.
  Fri. 10/3/14 2:15pm Steelguitarlane:

Michael, have you heard the Quebe Sisters version of It's a Sin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

Nope...I haven't.
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 2:17pm listener james from westwood:

My borborygmus is, if anything, arrhythmic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:17pm Brian in UK:

Around the time of No One Cares LP. Deliciously sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

I wish it was oligarchy.

Here's another tune Keith Jarret's trio, love 'em or hate 'em, has performed exquisitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:18pm Brian in UK:

Uncle the lyrics on Frank's 50s albums are sublime and then how he sings them. Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

Yes.

This Sammy arrangement is b onkers.
  Fri. 10/3/14 2:21pm Dean:

If you squint at ljfw's last comment it looks like he wrote, "My Borbetomagus is, if anything, the Eurythmics."

Counting down -- think I can just fit in a shower between the end of Hinky Dinky Time and the beginning of the Giants/Nationals game.

Those nutty squirrels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

I have no skin in that series. I like playoff baseball and want the series to go the limit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:34pm pacific standard simon:

I used to live in Detroit, so I'll go with Baltimore.
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 2:34pm Steelguitarlane:

The squirrels sounded kinda like Roger Miller
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:36pm pacific standard simon:

Perceptive, Lane! Michael, do you have a Roger Miller LP that you can play at 45 RPM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Yes...but it would be wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

I just looked up the Squirrels. No connection
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 2:40pm βrian:

I used to follow the Tigers. But when I discovered the players weren't necessarily from Detroit, or even, Michigan, I dropped the whole sports thing like a hot potato.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:42pm pacific standard simon:

In the early '70s, you could find sealed vinyl copies of Fifty Foot Hose in Bay Area record stores for 50 cents -- it was notorious.
  Fri. 10/3/14 2:42pm psilocybe:

Psychedelic flatulence? I do believe that's my bailiwick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:43pm Uncle Michael:

Consult a nutritionist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:43pm pacific standard simon:

You may need to trim your bailiwick.

Thanks for answering my question, James. Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/3/14 2:46pm pacific standard simon:

I could probably listen to 3 hours of this music bed -- but I'd want to hear the lyrics, eventually.

Damned if I can remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/3/14 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

Simon, were you absent when I played it? It'll come around again.
Avatar    Fri. 10/3/14 2:50pm βrian:

One of my favourite shows, thanks UM. Just a pity it clashes with my Friday after work beer, otherwise I would be cheering you on.
Well, that's me caught up, anyway.
