Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I was in Vermont for Thanksgiving with friends many years ago. One evening over the weekend, we went to a bar popular with the ski tourists and there was this really awful ersatz reggae band playing the joint to wild whoops and hollers. It was the Hackney brothers. Had no knowledge of Death until a huge story came out in the New York Times a year or two later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 12:21pm Parq:

Doug, that may be the most bizarre "back in the day" story I've ever heard.

I was floored when I read the NYT article. I brought it over to my wife and I said, "Hey, weren't these guys that crappy reggae band we saw?"
Avatar    Fri. 9/26/14 12:30pm Alex In Illinois:

In Chicago, we are so used to excessive political ads, that we tune them out. So all of the absurdly early political ads have made the current ones more ignorable. What I don't like are the robo calls we receive, especially the ones from Americans for Prosperity trying to get my father-in-law who died last year to register.
  Fri. 9/26/14 12:32pm Mary Jo:

AH you are funny...it was great to be there. C'mon dedicate a song to him...
Avatar    Fri. 9/26/14 12:34pm Alex In Illinois:

Anyway, what I was trying to get at was that the too-early political ads immunized us against the ones that are now playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't ruled it out, MJ.

I've only seen one, when at the gym, on their TVs. I'm lucky in not having cable or listening to a lot of commercial radio, but I suspect the lawn signs for our local congressman, and for the poor bastard with the unenviable task of trying to unseat said congressman, will be sprouting soon. Plus I live a 4-minute walk from my polling place, and they plant the signs as close to it as they legally can, so it's a political Superfund site through early Nov.

Avatar    Fri. 9/26/14 1:40pm Alex In Illinois:

If you use a hollow string reel for your kite string, and you have the full length of the line let out, then the reel acts as a resonator with the wind playing the kite string so you have a musical instrument, with cool sounds emanating from the reel. That makes kite flying much more fun and interesting. I have not done that in years, but if I do, I should try to record the wind song somehow.

Good rumor. I missed that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:17pm Mike East:

wikipedia says it was him...in the UK ads, not US...Maxell, not Memorex
  Fri. 9/26/14 2:20pm Dean:

That's right. Memorex was Ella releasing a 400db 35KHz glass-shattering laser beam. My cassette of choice back then was Nakamichi, anyway. But I sure would love to have heard Ella scatting "Bela Lugosi's Dead."
Avatar    Fri. 9/26/14 2:22pm hyde:

i bought a *lot* of maxell c90 cassettes, myself
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

So did I. I was a mix tape maker and a live tape trader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:27pm efd:

"guys, we need one more song to finish the album. Anyone got anything"

"How about this: a rock & roll band, made up of LIZARDS."

... and five minutes later they were recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

And you can't even hear Huey on that song. I think he split the scene.
  Fri. 9/26/14 2:29pm johnk77:

that was before Huey joined
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

that would 'splain it

I'm listening while I work from my mom's house & really enjoying your picks. Thanks. - crow from the Well.

I know who this is! Thanks! Crow is Rex' "Sweet Corn Lizzie."

Glad to have your ears.

Dave Edmunds doing one of my favorite songs that I haven't heard in a while! How did you know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

I have a way about me. A great little John Fogerty gem.

Wow, Sisters of Mercy! Very nice.

A later bass player in SoM, Patricia Morrison, used to work the cosmetics counter at the Broadway department store in Whittier.

I have a confession to make. I was "tripping balls" as the kids say, the first time I heard this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:50pm Stevel:

Trying to remember if I've heard this cover before. Must have somewhere along the line. Very cool.
  Fri. 9/26/14 2:50pm Robert:

For years, hearing the most played recording of this, I thought the lyrics were, "Wha? Jesus! It's just a shadow, it's just a shadow."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 2:52pm Stevel:

I would imagine this tune would work well under acidic conditions.

Please, do not use prosciutto to patch your bucket.

I meant to tell you, two weeks ago at around this time (though in the Pacific time zone) I was in a record store in Portland and they played "Albatross" on their sound system. It was weirdly confusing and familiar at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 3:05pm Santos L Halper:

Thanks UM! Roses & Guns in CHI; love it

No shit. By friends...thanks for that anecdote, Evan.
