Hola, DCE and James!
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Bee Gees are always nice at the top of the show.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

... and greets to V Priceless as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:07pm steve:

hey Tony and friends
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:10pm DCE:

it occurs to me that I've never actually heard Sticky Fingers all the way through. How is that possible?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:11pm Michael:

Hey now Tony. And my fellow listeners. Finally got my swag and spun your disc this morn at work. Lotsa fun that so thanks!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:12pm northguineahills:

That's a tough one DCE. I have on vinyl, and I'm not the biggest Stones fan.
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:13pm Dean:

@DCE: Meaning you've not heard all of the songs, or you've never listened to it top to bottom? I, too, have on vinyl, an early acquisition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:13pm DCE:

I was always kind of skeptical of the Stones--besides Goats Head Soup which I loved instantly. Not sure why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:13pm DCE:

I've never heard the album. I've heard what's been on the radio and figgered "eh, I've heard it all sorta!"
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

@ Michael: Glad you enjoyed it! (And greets!)

Hola hey hello, Dean!
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:14pm Dean:

As this track started, I mistakenly thought we were being treated to "Winter" off GHS. No, I'd have to take SF or EOMS over GHS, I'm afraid.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Greets too to NGH!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:15pm Rich in Washington:

The Stones are one of those bands where I first became aware of the difference in terms of music between singles and album cuts - and how radio stations played the dullest material from a given band.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:16pm Rich in Washington:

Hellowww.. Tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

This is the "American bands who kind of sound like Yes" part of the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:19pm DCE:

nice!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:20pm Rich in Washington:

It's kind of Lark's Tonguish, too
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

w/ a bit of Gentle Giant too -- the usual suspects.
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:22pm Tailored Brian:

Listen to Her Satanic Majesty Request & Exile on Main St. Clay P. Is now Requesting Starcastle.
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:23pm Dean:

I'd say this is the "American bands who sound like European bands [e.g., Druid] who kind of sound like Yes" part of the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:23pm DCE:

Starcastle! I second the motion
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Tailored Brian!
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:25pm Dean:

Heck, yeah, Starcastle! Throw in an epic Angel tune, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:26pm DCE:

I love these ridiculously pompous lyrics!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

Both of those will be on my long-planed AOR prog show, for sure. But there is more American prog ahead today -- have no fear.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

Both of those = Starcastle and Angel
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:27pm listener james from westwood:

Outstanding. Calm sounds are my jam today.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:28pm V Priceless:

Yay!!
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:28pm Dean:

Loudest concerts in my experience: Yes at Anaheim Stadium, Angel at Santa Monica Civic, Meshuggah at the Pound.
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

stepped away from the world for a minute. Loudest show?
uh........ motorhead in weedsport NY. No contest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:33pm Andrew Waterloo:

Have to agree with Motorhead. The next loudest would have been METZ in a tiny basement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:33pm steve:

i love the flavor of emerging prog
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:35pm βrian:

Is Renaissance on the list?
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

....and seeing "METZ" made me think of Merzbow at the DC Arts Center in about 1989 or 1990. Second loudest giggy ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 12:36pm DCE:

and another vote for Renaissance, and some Camel while you're in the prog library
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Andrew & βrian!

I think I spot a Camel on today's distant horizon....
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:38pm northguineahills:

I've seen Merzbow a few times, yes, those were effin' loud awesome shows.
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:38pm Ear Ache:

Mahavishnu Orchestra-Birds Of Fire /ELP-Brain Salad Surgery/in Quad Tours Both fantastic.
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

speaking of prog goodies, believe it or not there's a new Clearlight release this year. With Paul Sears (of Muffins fame) & Hillage & other lovelies.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Heya Ear Ache!

@ Turnip: Interesting! Paul Sears is one of my favorite drummers.
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:40pm βrian:

Oh, how Annie Haslam would set my heart to fluttering ...
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:40pm Dean:

Yes's (Moraz at the helm) and Angel's piercing synthesizers took the volume over the top for those shows.

Great Clearlight news!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:43pm V Priceless:

any word on Clearlight still using Mellotrons?
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:43pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

TC: Had the obscene pleasure to play a set with Paul's project Thee Maximalists a few years back. With fellow Muffin Newhouse & Keith Macksoud (Present) & Elliot Levin (philly free jazz sax) -- a bucket-list item right there...
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:44pm delired chameleon:

Is this Infinite Symphony by Clearlight S.?
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@chameleon: the one I speak of is "impressionist symphony" - deets: www.progarchives.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Talking about Chameleons....
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:49pm Dean:

Prog Archives also has a great account of Albatross written by the band's former engineer.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah -- I saw that. Very interesting, actually.
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:50pm Dean:

Does Le Orme's Smogmagica count as "American" prog?
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Was that one recorded in the U.S. or sumpin? Or are the lyrics about the U.S. maybe? Can't recall either way.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

OK -- I may have to rein in the proggy-prog for a bit. Don't want to go into sugar shock....
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:54pm Dean:

Yes, Los Angeles (opening track title). There's a tribute to Laserium, too, which had recently begun operation at Griffith Park Observatory, synched to Pink Floyd.
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:55pm Dean:

I.e., recorded in AND about L.A.
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:57pm βrian:

What, no Yup?
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:57pm delired chameleon:

Go R.I.O./Zeuhl rules!
  Tue. 8/19/14 12:57pm Santos L Halper:

Loving the faux yes Tony. Chameleon esp are clearly Squire/Howe worshippers. And why not?
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:58pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

speaking of Present (or Univers Zero, etc), that's why the good lord gave us RIO, to ward off the sugar-shock whilst still feasting on th'prog...
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 12:59pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

or, what chameleon said!
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Santos L! Methinks they liked their ELP too.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

Here's an interesting prog list: rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 1:01pm Rich in Washington:

Tetsu is a good antidote for Prog-Sugar-Shock
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 1:04pm listener james from westwood:

"Prog Rock Sugar Shock" sounds like a candidate for a Marathon-premium CD title.
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 1:05pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Hell yes! LJfW has it! Make it so! I'll pledge now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 1:06pm Andrew Waterloo:

It sounds like something an evil villain would do to you.
  Tue. 8/19/14 1:09pm Dean:

A fun list! Symphonic Slam...haven't thought about them in a while. And there's a note about Gabriel Bondage, another one I've owned, sold, and forgotten. But most of those bands are brand new to me.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Better watch out -- I may just do what James suggests!
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 1:12pm holland oats:

  Tue. 8/19/14 1:35pm Captain Obvious:

Tony, I'm on vacation today, a rare opportunity to catch part of your show. I think I should try harder to do that in the future (Charlene Darling recommended your show)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 2:00pm DCE:

I am now sharing an office with someone. Someone who doesn't like ANY Bowie. Not any phase of his career. Nothing. Not sure if this is tenable.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:01pm Rich in Washington:

I always thought this song sounded like a Neu song.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

Heh, Posh Boy. He was a curious cat. I was working a record store where F-Word made an in-store appearance to promote their LP. No performance, just appearance.

Howard Werth recorded for Dangerhouse Records in the late '70s.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:20pm Rich in Washington:

He once told me - 'Everything after 1990 SUCKS!'
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:21pm Rich in Washington:

I loved those Howard Werth/Dangerhouse singles. He reminded me of early Eno.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:21pm Tony Coulter:

Who did: DB or HW? (Or God.)
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:21pm Tony Coulter:

Guess you answered my question....
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

Chicago goes Zappa!
  Tue. 8/19/14 2:24pm Dean:

More than a whiff of Bacharach, too.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

@Tony: my office mate. Nothing after 1990 is any good, according to him.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

Cubemate claimed to be intrigued by my description of Throbbing Gristle but got about 10 seconds into their Greatest Hits CD and took it off and gave it back without comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 2:26pm DCE:

yeah, TC, I was gonna say that Chicago really had a Peaches en Regalia kind of feel to it
  Tue. 8/19/14 2:28pm Santos L Halper:

Chicago also did "A Hit by Varese". More FZ conceptual continuity
Avatar    Tue. 8/19/14 2:32pm fred:

@Rich: your coworker might be suffering from Youth Withdrawal Syndrome, aka aging. YWS has no known cure, though a steady diet of live shows has shown promise in poorly controlled tests. Keili's show is not indicated unless desperate measures are called for
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 2:33pm DCE:

right you are, fred
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

There's your Camel. Now for some Cafe Jacques?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 2:35pm DCE:

I ordered it stir-fried, dammit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 8/19/14 2:36pm DCE:

but I'll eat it any way you serve it
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Cafe Jacques -- now there's a band I've never heard.
  Tue. 8/19/14 2:38pm Dean:

Do seek them out, and by "them" I mean the old LPs, not the reformed touring version of the band. Phil Collins appears on one of their records to vocalize. Rupert Holmes produced them. Proggy, jazzy, New Age-y MOR AOR.
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:38pm Rich in Washington:

@Fred: I only this week became acquainted with Keili's show and at first I was confused and scared. I was familiar with less than 5% of the bands played there. I felt like a codger who wandered out of the gated retirement trailer park. After a while, it was exciting. It was like tuning into a punk rock show for the first time, etc..
Avatar Tue. 8/19/14 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

I think death starts when you no longer open yourself up to new ideas.

Wow, this John Adams shares percussive strings ideas with Steve Reich's Violin Phase, Octet, and 18. Not in a bad way at all, a different take, very interesting. I want this record! (I guess one could argue the whole percussive string thing came from Stravinsky)

I'm not an Adams fan, either, but these shorter orchestral pieces live can be a lot of fun. Try "Shaker Loops" and "Short Ride in a Fast Machine."
