Free trip to Togoland for the first person who recognizes the record today's three cassettes are resting on (see picture to the left).
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 11:38am Tony Coulter:

(Please note that Togoland hasn't existed since 1914. The winner of today's contest will be responsible for providing his or her own time machine.)
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 11:57am listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all!! Oh, if I had a time machine, I'd be waylaying high-seas shipping in the age of sail and bringing WFMU beaucoup doubloons!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 11:58am Tony Coulter:

Heya, James!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:00pm V Priceless:

ahoy, Tony and gang!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, V Priceless!
  Tue. 7/8/14 12:02pm Dean:

If I had a time machine, I'd crank it back four hours and get another hour of sleep!

The LP cover is completely unfamiliar, so I'll guess it's an obscure Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:02pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I don't deserve Togoland!
BEHOLD THE COULTER!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:03pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Got me swag yesterday. Staring down the barrel of the TC premium... its days are NUMBERED...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/8/14 12:03pm Andrew Waterloo:

Togoland? Is that where they invented the modern concept of take out?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:04pm DCE:

oh, hi there!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:05pm βrian:

Hola, Tony. Passing through, sadly. Mais je t'écoutes.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:05pm V Priceless:

Hey Tony and gang!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Weird thing: I'm not seeing comments on the playlist page, tho I know they're there 'cause I see them from inside the accuplaylist.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:08pm DCE:

where'd my hello go?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:09pm still b/p:

G'afternoon.
The house band/boat band for LJFW's salty brigands: Dub Loons. "Don't walk the plank -- step it!"
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:10pm northguineahills:

I didn't get a Dougie email, didn't know if this was happening.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hmm -- I'm still not seeing comments on the playlist page. I can see them coming in from the accuplaylist page -- but I can only see the first couple of words. So -- I have no idea what y'all are saying!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:14pm V Priceless:

weird...comments don't seem to be happening here...not sure anyone else can see this?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

That dog is speaking Latin!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:20pm Rich in Washington:

I almost missed the hiss
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

which one of us broke the comments machine?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Well, of course, you won't see this until later, but: The playlist system has frozen. Batman (aka Kenzo) has been alerted, so hopefully everything will be hunky dory again sometime soon.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:29pm northguineahills:

Hmmm..., is the comments board working?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:38pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Welcome back, true believers.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:38pm Rich in Washington:

Whoa!
It suddenly burst forth with a tsunami of typoarrhea!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:39pm Doug Schulkind:

A SYSTEM-WIDE PROBLEM WAS AFFLICTING ALL WFMU PLAYLISTING. (JOE BELOCK'S PLAYLIST OVER ON THE MOTHESHIP WAS SIMILARLY FROZEN.) THINGS NOW SEEM THAWED, THANKS NO DOUBT TO THE WONDERFUL KENZO AND HIS TEAM OF TRAIN GERBILS.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Staring down the barrel of Kenzo's premium disc as well. All my ears are doomed.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:39pm Rich in Washington:

Hello, Kenzo!
Thanks for unblocking the words.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Server caches overwhelmed. They have been relieved of their duties.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:40pm still b/p:

He restoreth my whozits and this whatsis right here. And we rightly give him thanks.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Ah yes, I now "see" the wonderful Kenzo, above. Wearing a lime-green-velour three-piece suit, I can only guess.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

Hooray!! We're back!! THANKS, KENZO!!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:41pm Rich in Washington:

I still have phantom Ken's Last Ever Radio Extravaganza syndrome.
It's an itch I can no longer scratch, yet there it is.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rev. Turnip Druid: I made it through half of the premium before reaching semi-insanity. May you find your half life.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:42pm listener james from westwood:

@still b/p: Live from the poop deck!
All: There's the comments! Here I am thinking, come ON, this is GOOD STUFF, come listen! Thanks, Kenzo!!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

Belated collective hello, EVERYBODY!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:46pm northguineahills:

Me too, Rich.....
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:47pm DCE:

PHEW
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:52pm Rich in Washington:

this is an amazing cassette, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:53pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

smoish!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Agreed! Comes with a nice booklet (not pictured)
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

Sadly, only 250 copies were made.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

So, no one recognizes the record today's cassettes are lying on? It's Winston Tong's 12" single "Theoretical China": rymimg.com...
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

Winston Tong was the vocalist for Tuxedomoon....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/8/14 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

'elo my frans
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

E.L.O. to you as well, UM!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

My least favorite thing about cassettes: pre- and post-echo.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:17pm DCE:

Rambo's Fist, huh...haha.
  Tue. 7/8/14 1:28pm conrad:

I don't usually have trouble with the stream, but it keeps buggin' out on me this morning. Twice in the last half-hour I've had to close the pop-up and open it again. Anyone else, or is it just on my end?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

"The World, the Flesh and the Devil" is the cassette in the middle in my pic. The one with Catherine Deneuve on the cover (who knew she was in an '80s industrial band).
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

Dug the Tu Quoque comp! My heart sounds like the "Ritual du Plaisir" when I arrive at the FMU record fair.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

@ Conrad: There are problems happening today, yes -- basically server overload causing delays. Should be better now/soon.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

Tho the problems were with the playlist, not the stream, so....
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:42pm Chris from DC:

Interesting to hear T.A.C. I'm a fan of Simon Balestrazzi from hearing him on Scott Williams' show, and was wondering about this project.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

QUESTION: I will be taking two weeks off at the end of this month. My plan is to re-broadcast two old "Tape Hiss" shows during my absence, since those shows don't get archived. Anyone have any druthers as far as which shows get re-broadcast? I'll be here next week, so you have until then to cast your vote.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Didn't record the earliest shows, though -- so those are out.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

I realize it may be hard to remember what anything was -- but just figgered I'd ask!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

I would like to hear the Volkswhale, Glorious Moodmen, Kopf/Kurz one again. I know it was fairly recent, so maybe the second week?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Duly noted!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:52pm Chris from DC:

Pearls Before Swine live. Not sure how I missed that.
  Tue. 7/8/14 1:54pm MrFab:

I second Rich's nomination.

Love this Donald Duck-goes-Casio tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/8/14 1:55pm cklequ:

I'll second Rich's request. I missed out on all but 30 seconds of the Volkwhale,... I'd love to hear what i missed.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

@ Chris, MrFab & ckequ: Noted, noted and noted. Volkswhale for the lead.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, everybody, your individual playlist hellos are in the mail. Too much disruption today.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Oops -- jumped the gun! Accuplaylists and cassettes don't always mix.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:04pm Guido from Cologne:

This is pretty much Pierre Henri-ish , isn't it?
Love those good old experimental cassette sounds.
I'm about to get nostalgic!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Guido!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:07pm Guido from Cologne:

Hi Tony!
... and hi everyone!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:13pm DCE:

wonderful!
  Tue. 7/8/14 2:24pm Fredrik Nilseni:

Hi Tony. My toes are tingling. Thanks a lot.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

Heya Fredrik! A bit of vigorous exercise should take care of the tingling.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:33pm listener james from westwood:

I too wonder how only 1 side of the cassette can have bleed-through. Odd. The 1980s were a chaotic time, is all I can offer.
  Tue. 7/8/14 2:33pm Fredrik Nilseni:

OK, I'll do my aerobics to this last cassette.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

@ James: Actually, I am starting to hear bleed-through on this side too (arghh!!). It's still much less than on side B, though -- so far anyway!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

Or at least I heard it at the end of the last track and during the gap. Fingers crossed.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Are they saying, "Big bone, chicken leg"?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:38pm Rich in Washington:

Bleed through just happened to cassettes sometimes, didn't it? It wasn't something one could rectify during playback. Like some magnetic damage to the tape, yes?
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

I've had cassettes where you could faintly hear the opposite side in reverse along with the side you intended to listen to.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

That's bleed-through! Not much you can do about it.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

Thankfully, tho -- its barely happening on this side.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

Forgot to say: Lucas Trouble was in the band on now (Hymn)
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:47pm Guido from Cologne:

Amazing tapes today!
I'm about envoius! ;-)
Thanks for sharing theeese sounds to the world!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

My pleasure, Guido!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:53pm Tony Coulter:

More and more cassettes are getting reissued on vinyl or CD -- but not too many comps, unfortunately.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:57pm Guido from Cologne:

Yes, the comps ... best way to discover stuff ... but often enough theese present the best of te artists invoved.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:57pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:57pm V Priceless:

great Bowie track! Fine show, Tony! Thanx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/8/14 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the grooviness, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:59pm DCE:

awesome Tony--see you next time
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 2:59pm listener james from westwood:

Superb spread of sounds, Tony! Thanks muchly!
Avatar Tue. 7/8/14 3:00pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everybody! See you next week!
