Heya, James and DCE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/27/14 12:03pm Carmichael:

Okee Dokee Tony, made it through the memorial mayhem. I can deal with a little pain.
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

Hair of the PAIN that bit me! (I'd better get a shot for that. Rabies or whiskey?)
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 12:06pm fleep:

@Carmichael I had no idea Godzilla was so sensitive to sunlight.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/27/14 12:07pm Brian in UK:

You know what is said 'No pain, no grain' Two fingers of red eye, DJ and a crocodile sandwich. Make it snappy.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Fleep!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

... and Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/27/14 12:09pm Carmichael:

Fleep, pale skin is a sign of royalty in Japan. Even for city-smashing, bus-throwing mutants.
  Tue. 5/27/14 12:09pm Dean:

Morning (from where I sit), all. Jon Rose is one of the artists featured in a movie by a buddy of mine, The Reach of Resonance: http://www.reachofresonance.com/ Well worth a viewing.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

So, I should say that the "Bad Alchemy" comps are all over the place style-wise, from improv/noise to off-kilter pop.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Interesting, Dean! I'll take a look post-show. (Greets. too.)
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 12:11pm Fleep:

@Tony Greetings from 964 miles southwards, drive time in current traffic: 14 h 49 min.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Today's show is the debut of my brand new cassette deck. Has pitch control, tho I don't expect to be using that today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/27/14 12:13pm Carmichael:

We're fixing US 50, Fleep. Add another 2 1/2 hours.
  Tue. 5/27/14 12:14pm Dean:

Other featured artists: Miya Masaoki (on cockroaches and bees), John Luther Adams (music generated from the Arctic Circle), and Bob Ostertag (music and activism).
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Is there footage of Jon Rose playing barbed wire fence?
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Günter Müller is also in the group on now (Nachtluft)
  Tue. 5/27/14 12:21pm Dean:

Tony, yes! It is the core theme of the Rose portion. Steve Elkins, the filmmaker, devotes a lot of time to Jon Rose.

Ah, I have a Nachtluft CD. Forgot it was Muller.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Btw, the tape on now is the purplish one on the right.
  Tue. 5/27/14 12:37pm Brueghel LeMoche:

Hola amigos! Congrats for your new cassette deck Tony! You could maybe consider a reel to reel for an special edition of tape hiss in the future!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Brueghel! And then there's 8-track hiss ... and clunk.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:49pm still b/p:

A cassette deck salvaged from former workplace sat around here quite a while before I tried, with great hope, to play something. But the Aiwa AD-6550 (made 1977-1981)...she won't move the tape. So sAD.
  Tue. 5/27/14 12:51pm Brueghel LeMoche:

This Loch Ness Monster song is gorgeous. There's a revival of that synth sound going on these days, no?
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Heya still b/p! I weep for yer fallen Aiwa.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

@ Brueghel: Yep, the kids can't get enough of those drums machines and analog synths.
  Tue. 5/27/14 12:55pm Brueghel LeMoche:

those 80's synth are to music what art-deco is to architecture
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 12:55pm fleep:

I believe the belts are the weakest link, they dry up and snap. Same with old VCRs.
I have a terrific cassette boom box that no longer works but I can hear the motor running just fine.
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

Dug the heck out of vol. 7. All over the place is basically where my mind's been all day, so this has matched up nicely.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

In case anyone was confused: the H.N.A.S. track that ended the last tape is only 7 second long.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it, James!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

The cassette on now is the green one, with the lovely Deborah Jaffe (of Master/Slave Relationship) on the cover.
  Tue. 5/27/14 1:04pm Brueghel LeMoche:

I think they were sampling Judy Ongg on that song, could be?
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Don't know Ms. Ong!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

er, Ongg...
  Tue. 5/27/14 1:09pm Brueghel LeMoche:

I only have one lovely tune of her "Miserarete" taken from a cassette! pizzicato5 compilation. I think it was her on that patchinco song
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

Damn you, pre/post echo.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

As is no doubt glaringly obvious by now, everything on this side of the cassette is Japanese. The other side is from all over.
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 1:22pm maestroso:

Argh!! I missed Kiyohiko Semba!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:24pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, maestroso!
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 1:27pm maestroso:

And no archives... what was the song, DJ Tony?
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:28pm Tony Coulter:

Nothing I recognized from elsewhere -- and no title is given.
  Tue. 5/27/14 1:33pm Dean:

I'm not hearing "hibernation." I'm hearing, "Hi! Turkey sh*t."
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Maybe that's the secret subliminal message.
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 1:36pm listener james from westwood:

Turn me on, turkey sh*t!
Turn me on, turkey sh*t!
Turn me on, turkey sh*t!
(etc.)
  Tue. 5/27/14 1:38pm Dean:

Even Judas Priest had the courtesy to backmask.
  Tue. 5/27/14 1:40pm Brueghel LeMoche:

wow this limpe fuchs thing rocks! btw the japanese part just reminded me a scene of the movie i saw yesterday night, kurosawa's "the bodyguard". where a group of geishas are playing an exotica piece, really fast and rockin' . Actually the soundtrack of that movie is really nice
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 1:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[splutters to wakefulness in the corner]
....whuh? Turkey sh*t?
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 1:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Yay! Cranioclast! Boo, missed that Hal McGee piece...
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, T*rn*p!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Oddly, I saw Master/Slave Relationship do a show in a bar sometime in the '90s.
  Tue. 5/27/14 1:48pm Dean:

The bar...was it Hegel's Spirits?
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:50pm Rich in Washington:

this is a great show, Tony!
Sadly, in new work environment, so listening to radio shows will be challenging, going forward.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

er, I meant to say this cassette came out in 1988, not 1989.
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 1:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

....and haven't heard this one since about 1991. Pitched much of my tape collection in a move. So glad SOMEONE ON EARTH still has these things.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Rich,

Sorry to hear about your new audio-hostile environment. Maybe you can get wireless headphones that look exactly like ears?
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:54pm still b/p:

I liked that. And backwards, the outfit is "a mini matinu," So...you know.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

Cassette on now is "Love, Pain and the (Whole Damn Thing)"
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:04pm northguineahills:

Don't think I've actually listened to the Kalahari Surfers before. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/27/14 2:05pm Carmichael:

OK, back from a brainless, destructive meeting. This music shall cure me, though.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, NGH! They are great, fer sure.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

and a hi ho hello to Carmichael as well....
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 2:08pm Chris from DC:

A couple of bands here that were just names to me previously. Very cool.
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 2:09pm Jeff Golick:

Bad Alchemy = good listening. Hiya, brother Tony and fellow GTDRers.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Chris! Every band/artist on these tapes has full albums as well.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Jeff G!

By the by, the name "Bad Alchemy" is taken from a Slapp Happy/ Henry Cow song.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:13pm still b/p:

Too bad Holly didn't sit on the windowsill playing it this way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/27/14 2:16pm cklequ:

My god, that was the best Jad Fair song i've ever heard....
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:18pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, cklequ!!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:19pm northguineahills:

Yeah, that was an awesome Jad Fair track.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Thinking back, I guess what I saw in a bar was a hybrid of Dog as Master and Master/Slave Relationship, as it was the duo of Hal McGee and Debbie Jaffe.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:48pm Tony Coulter:

The Only a Mother track just now is only 22 seconds long
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:53pm Doug as Master:

Been lurking and working. Thanks for a great Hiss, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

Doug as Master! I hail thee!
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 2:55pm Jeff Golick:

I'll have what she's having.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:55pm northguineahills:

This Asano/Rax Karal is the tops! Thanks Tony for a great show!
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 2:57pm Tony Coulter:

Yer welcome, NGH.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 3:00pm Tony Coulter:

This is zee last track of the tape....
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Tony, for sharing these Bad Alchemy tapes! Blows my mind that I could've been listening to these back in the late 80s instead of the crap I was hearing on the radio!
Avatar    Tue. 5/27/14 3:03pm Jeff Golick:

Outstanding tape mining, Tony. Thanks for the tour of Bad Alchemy.
Avatar Tue. 5/27/14 3:05pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Jeff! And thanks, all, for showing up. See you next week!
