Argh. Was woken up at 4:00 this morning by a wet cat nose and loud purring. As I was petting the cat in the dark, something started to seem a bit off. Switched on the light, and wadya know -- not our cat.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 11:54am listener james from westwood:

That's bizarre! Is there a cat door through which this mystery cat could've entered?
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 11:55am Tony Coulter:

There is. Though the cat is so fat, I don't know how he made it. (Hey, James!)
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 11:55am Tony Coulter:

Fat, and he smells like bacon.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 11:56am Tony Coulter:

(He's gone now -- but the smell of bacon lingers.)
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Someone say bacon?!
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

The one thing I've missed since becoming a vegetable.

Hey Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/20/14 12:01pm Carmichael:

Heya Tony, and good morning bacon eaters! Tony, I will be in your neck of the woods in a few weeks. Visiting relatives, both alive and dead.

No undead relatives, though, I hope...

Over the weekend an acquaintance told of her 4 or 5 year old daughter's current tattoo fascination. Insisted on setting up a tattoo shop at home, insisted on Mom's help in drumming up business, and for one of her first marker-ink designs, put some bacon on someone's skin.

Tony, actually I'm visiting universities with my daughters (U of O, OSU and Southern Or), and a brother lives nearby. The deader ones are up in Aberdeen, where I'm also going.

I can't decide if this Esperanto is minimalist or a cartoon soundtrack.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:13pm Rich in Washington:

Now you know why Esperanto never set the world on fire. You greet people with the word 'fartas' in it.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

What did you say? Something about setting farts on fire?
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:15pm Rich in Washington:

I don't know if you were one of the people whose brain I picked in this; but a few years back some other folks and I were planning an all-Esperanto set but all of the music we found was uniformly dull, so we scrapped the project.

The inventor of Esperanto, Zamenhof, did live in Lithuania for a while, so there's that.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:16pm Rich in Washington:

I never, ever saw anyone light a fart on fire until I was an adult and my (then) wife's uncle came over for a barbecue. I guess he was infamous in the family for doing that.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: You didn't ask -- but I wouldn't have been able to help anyway. All I know about is William Shatner's great Esperanto horror movie.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:19pm Rich in Washington:

I still haven't seen that. Any good?
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:20pm Tony Coulter:

I think it's quite good -- very atmospheric. And Shatner isn't in hammy mode -- perhaps it's harder to be hammy in Esperanto.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

The film is called "Incubus" --it's from '66.

Just made some Habanero hot sauce from scratch. I put some pears, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, worcestershire sauce, unrefined brown sugar, cayenne, caramelized lime juice, and dark rum. It came out quite nice.

That makes you one of the Hillage People.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:26pm Rich in Washington:

Love Hillages stuff. Really good psychedelic hold out music. I also think his Rainbow Dome Music is an underrated ambient classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/20/14 12:26pm Carmichael:

I met Steve Hillage once at a party full of music industry ass-kissers. I had no idea who he was at the time, and he seemed rather pleased.

Greets, Brian! I wish...

@Carmichael: I've been in the presence of semi-famous people quite a few times, without knowing at the time who they were. It's a funny experience. A few times, it seems like it bothers them or that you're being aloof or disrespectful or something.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

I am a member of the Hillage Preservation Society.
  Tue. 5/20/14 12:29pm Dean:

Rainbow Dome Music and, to some extent, Green, are typically regarded as pioneers of the tech/trance genres. Hillage is brilliant, no doubt. I would love to meet him. A friend of mine and former guitarist for Switzerland's prog outfit Flame Dream met him in London back in the '80s. Report is he was cool.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:32pm Rich in Washington:

Just recently spotted Emo Phillips on the street. I was standing in front of the building that he was staying at, adjoined by KBOO studios. I was smoking out front. He sort of looked at me and I recognized him. He looked like he needed peace - but that's how he always looks, so I just nodded at him and kept smoking my cigarette.
It was like spotting a deer or sasquatch in the woods.
Avatar    Tue. 5/20/14 12:34pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Rainbow Dome & Fish Rising, both groove.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Must be odd to pick up John Waters when he's out hitchhiking. (He's extremely pleasant in person, based on my few, brief encounters with him.)
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:35pm listener james from westwood:

Someday I'd like to notch a Thomas Pynchon sighting. Although I've heard it's not as tough as it used to be.
Avatar    Tue. 5/20/14 12:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

It takes a hillage to rise a fish.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:36pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I couldn't imagine that. Waters hitchhiking. Pretty cool.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! "Fish Rising" is in fact my fave Hillage album.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:37pm thunderish' Jay:

Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

That "ha" was turnip-aimed.
  Tue. 5/20/14 12:38pm Dean:

Fish Rising is fantastic, as is the contemporary Gong stuff ("You," for instance). I love Khan, too, and didn't GTDR not long ago spin some stuff from Arzachel? Hillage must have been about 14 at the time!
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, thunderish' Jay! The NYC women have had to live without me for the last almost 5 years. I'm broadcasting from Portland, Or.
Avatar    Tue. 5/20/14 12:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Khan is a great one as well. Haven't played that one in ages...
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:39pm Jeremy N:

Hi Tony, all! Yep, it takes a Hillage to rise a fish!
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

  Tue. 5/20/14 12:41pm Dean:

Hillage's nom-de-axe on FR is of course Steve Hillside Village.

Right, Tony! I double-checked my second copy of the disk. It is the reissue with bonus tracks, amen! Remains shrink-wrapped, oddly.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Talking of Portland, that's where Eric Schopmeyer hails from.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 12:42pm still b/p:

I saw Emo doing his standup in Boston many years ago, and remember 1) the drunky woman nearby who complained loudly and at length about how awful Emo was, and 2) the guy who was tossing comments at the stage until Emo engaged him directly with some heckler-shut-off stuff, and the guy took off his coat and put it on the back of his chair in an ,"oh, it's ON now" fashion and said something in a Kermit the Frog voice. He seemed to be a hopeless douchey mook who regarded this direct attention as a chance to show how wonderfully funny, talented and ready he was, the way someone else would welcome a sudden invitation to come up and play drums for a band.

anyone catch the news that Randy California's estate is finally getting around to suing Zep for rip-off of their tune "Taurus" as basis for Stairway? My guess is the estate will run out of gas (i.e. money) before the claim makes much of an impact on the big Z.

if I'm not mistaken, Zep did support Spirit when they first toured the US. Rumour has it Bonzo developed his "hands on" drumming approach from seeing Ed Cassidy do it. Interesting.

Hmm. Zep. Are there other bands who are known by such an abbreviated form of their name? Not counting acronyms like ELP or CSN & Y, that is.

I listened to Spirit yesterday, and while the one recurring portion is nearly identical to Stairway, the rest of it is different enough that I'd be surprised if they reach a legal win. If they do, there so many countless songs with at least that level of identifiable similarity to something else that everybody and his recorded-something brother should be flinging suits all over the place.

Congrats to you. The one dud I recall was when Kim Gordon played with someone-or-other. Everything about the performance was so bad it was good. But the regulars were not having it, nosiree. I seem to recall Michael Rosenstein of Cadence fuming. Rosenstein is a terrific writer, but the irony was palpable. I mean, this is FIMAV, no limits. But in fact there are limits, and Kim Gordon (truly, truly abysmal performance) tested one.

I talked to a guy while in line to see Gravity about the Haino trio the night before and he said he walked out, he basically said "I was waiting for something to happen and realized that I wasn't seeing the intro" and nearly asked him why he'd come to FIMAV at all.
  Tue. 5/20/14 1:55pm Dean:

So many FIMAV stories... And then Vision Festival right on its heels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 1:56pm Andrew Waterloo:

Yah, my next festival will probably be Guelph.
  Tue. 5/20/14 1:57pm Dean:

Still haven't made it there, but I used to chat with Ajay at FIMAV quite a bit. Try to catch shows in Montreal at Casa del Popolo, too. Not sure when they're next mounting a festival, but according to a friend there it's a winner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:00pm Andrew Waterloo:

I have the program from Casa Del Popolo

In the '90s, I went to see the revamped version of Daevid Allen's Gong. Guy behind me thought it was going to be Pierre Moerlen's fusion version and wouldn't stop bitching.

Just got back from lunchie walkabouts, so been out of the jibber-jabber. But that's funny, TC: I don't think I've EVER run into someone who preferred Moerlen's Gong to Allen's.
Avatar    Tue. 5/20/14 2:02pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I never knew such a thing was possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:03pm Andrew Waterloo:

yah, this guy seemed to take offense to the fact that I said hello to him
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:04pm Andrew Waterloo:

Casa de Popalo is June 4 - 22
  Tue. 5/20/14 2:05pm Dean:

Well, Holdsworth could be a draw to the Moerlen iteration. I wonder if Ron Wood ever gets people going, "Dang, I thought I was gonna hear Mick Taylor!"
  Tue. 5/20/14 2:05pm Dean:

AW, move to Montreal for June.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:06pm Andrew Waterloo:

I have been looking for an excuse to go there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

@still b/p: I'll just keep offing Jerry Vale till you get back. Groundhog Dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:06pm Andrew Waterloo:

It's only a 6 hour drive for me.

Heavens to Murgatroid!

I love this Kippington Lodge track.

Wish me luck; I have to enter phone tree hell for a spell.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael: Me too. There's also something vaguely kinky about the lyrics. Or maybe it's me.
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: Good luck! Don't fall out of the phone tree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/20/14 2:19pm Ike:

Hello DJ Vegetable! I'm out sick today. The Murgatroid was especially good music to be out sick to. Or just out to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/20/14 2:19pm Carmichael:

Just stepped out and looks like I missed some fun stuff. Thanks for saving the Vale tribute for me, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 2:19pm Rich in Washington:

It's YOU Tony! Dirty minded! Next thing you'll be telling us that there's some sexual reference in Steely Dan's name...

Hey, Ike! Herbal tea and accordions are the best cure for a common cold.
  Tue. 5/20/14 2:22pm Dean:

Was unaware of that Kippington Lodge release. Just ordered a copy c/o an Amazon promo. Can't wait.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 5/20/14 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

It's on several K.L. comps, I believe.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/20/14 2:31pm northguineahills:

I wonder if Eyvind Kang has this record.

Heya, NGH! They're kinda a Norwegian Fairport.

God rest ye merry Kong Lavring.

Hola DJ Tony, this is a great show!

Yeah, maestroso -- SS may be a better comparison, actually!
Avatar Tue. 5/20/14 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, maestroso!
  Tue. 5/20/14 2:39pm Dean:

Fairport Convention = FaCo? Steeleye Span = St. Spa? Kippington Lodge = KiLo? Kong Lavring = KoLa?
  Tue. 5/20/14 2:39pm Dean:

Brinsley Schwarz = B ... never mind.

There was - may still be - a really good Steven Wright thing on Netflix. It had a short film he'd made at the end of it. Pretty funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 5/20/14 2:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony. Awesome set!
