No Mariano, now it's an hour of Clay and Fabio :)
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:10pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

"Classix" -- very efficient use of letters. This is the kind of thriftiness WFMU needs to embrace in these tight times.
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:10pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

At 7pm they'll both go at the same time.

Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:12pm V Priceless:

Clay - how on Earth did you stumble across a Cintron record??
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:13pm dale:

remember when every mall had an organ store? smarmy guy with full head of hair and a pencil mustache would push the button that said BOSS NOVA BEAT, then add a bass line, then tinkly out a melody lighthearted and gay....
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:13pm Matt from Springfield:

Cheap shot, Clay, using cute kids to solicit money! ... It's working! ;)

Hey Clay and Fabio and Volunteers and Pledgers and Pledgonnaires!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, I remember this guy!!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:16pm northguineahills:

@dale: when at the mall, I would ditch my parents when I was little and go to the organ store to fuck around on the organs.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:17pm mariano:

@Danne: right you are, Clay and Fabio I should have said.

hey fabio and clay, matt, dale, northguinea et al!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:18pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Dale -- there was a line on "American Dad" once to the effect of, "I'm going to go down to the mall piano store to find out how they stay open. Wanna come?"

I remember the guys standing in the front of the Wurlitzer store, hoping against hope someone would come in, rumpled suits and all, in their lonely cave of yellowed fluorescent light...
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Only to find Gideon's Listener Number...

Hey common!
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:19pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Kenzo: Oh yeah! BIG part of Pidge nostalgia, the organ store at the mall, demonstration organ playing outside... :)
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:20pm cklequ:

The fact that Clay measures mail in feet is reason enough to pledge.

William, it was really (helpful).
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:23pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I miss the era of malls with branches of local businesses in them.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:23pm dale:

my mother fell prey to an organ salesman (not in a dirty sense). she was 73 and she bought a lowrey millenium - seventy thousand fucking dollars! she was the first sucker in the country to buy one. they gave her a 30 year loan - at 73 THEY GIVE HER A 30 YEAR LOAN! we were lucky to sell it for half price after she passed.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Pete: Just look at the Pittsburgh mall in "Dawn of the Dead"--no major chains, I'd never heard of these stores! Hanover shoes, I know because they had those around Harrisburg, but still..
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Jeez, dale! That's brutal!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:25pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Hey, I just gave 180 bucks! #83900.
Why do you say East Orange instead of Jersey City? I live in Jersey City, but I once played in the WFMU studio in East Orange, right before Upsala closed down.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:32pm Matt from Springfield:

BAS!!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:32pm Danne D:

Bas :)
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:33pm Danne D:

@ted in JC - it's an FCC thing
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:33pm david_:

Is the show goal meter just for the individual episode, or the total for both weeks?
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:33pm dale:

noah webster of the dictioary fame lived and taught school in goshen back in the 1780s
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey ted--the station is still "licensed" to East Orange, so they announce that instead of where the studio is, in Jersey City. To top it off, the main transmitter is still where it always was--in West Orange.
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:36pm mariano:

Can you feel the love?
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:36pm Matt from Springfield:

"I think I love you, so what am I so afraid of??..."

@Lovecraft: Probably a Mid-Atlantic regional store.
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:36pm common:

i love hearing clay sing love songs to fabio!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:36pm Danne D:

@ted so basically the explanation Ken offered literally is that it's whatever the FCC says it is. So they could tell them it has to be Jersey City or East Orange or wherever they want - I think there was an article buried in an old LCD article where Ken basically said that around the time of the move.
  Thu. 3/6/14 6:37pm LovecraftDude888:

or maybe the brand...sounds familiar though. was a PA thang. i miss Brentano's bookstores that I will tell you
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:37pm dale:

i remember hanover shoes, maybe they had sunday circulars or ads like the mason shoe company.
  Thu. 3/6/14 6:37pm LovecraftDude888:

and Doubledays when it was good
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Yep, Sunday circulars, my Mom still looks through those.
Doubledays sounds familiar, Bretano's, I'll have to see if other folks on the Interwebs have reminisced about that.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:39pm dale:

journey to uranus? uhhhhh........
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:39pm david_:

heheh. heh.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:40pm Danne D:

There almost should be a premium that features all of these Clay hype pieces for each of the prior editions of Clay's Classics :) They are classics in and of themselves :)
  Thu. 3/6/14 6:40pm LovecraftDude888:

oh Brentanos books was great in its day. Waldenbooks was like, ok. Newberrys/Mcrory's drugstores were GREAT. like a 2 level one at my mall growing up....you could get custom tshirts done, eat ice cream, and all sorts of junk food while u waited
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:41pm dale:

i think the premium should be an hour long commercial like this for the songs - i don;t want to hear the whole songs, just clays promo for them.
  Thu. 3/6/14 6:41pm LovecraftDude888:

wait...do they still have JoAnne's Nut House? the candy kiosks?
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:42pm david_:

www.theonion.com...
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:42pm Cheer:

Premium sounds amazing!
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Clay: Look in the abandoned mall for the abandoned Radio Shack and there are plenty of microcasette recorders right behind the display of Tandy Color Computers and the NEW TRS-80 Model IV. They even still have a full selection of electronics parts and a staff who understands what they are.
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:43pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne/dale: Oh! Maybe not a $75 premium, since these are all free on the Archives...but that's an idea for a Meghan listener prize next year! Comp of Clay's best promos and ramp-ups featured on his show! :) I'll have to remember that one! :)
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@david: It's partially my fault...I go there to buy cords, plugs and odds and ends of electronica ;)

Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:47pm Danne D:

@M_f_S Rich Hazelton once did a whole premium of bed music, intros and outros of various FMU DJs :)
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:47pm Matt from Springfield:

"Just Say No, with Irene and Stan" ;D

Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: That sounds super-fantastic! Sometimes DJs don't reveal their beds--a one CD comp of your fave beds would be worth that money! :)
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:49pm dale:

yeah - we also had the ones that got police and fire and airport traffic.

sherwood schwartz used his own money to make the gilligan's island finale special after the series was cancelled. he didn't want it to be a neverending circle. he insisted they had to get off the island.

@steve: Byum! Byum! Bbbbwwwwwbbbwwwwum!
Avatar Thu. 3/6/14 6:49pm Danne D:

I literally think the last thing I bought at a Radio Shack was, um, a radio - right before Sandy. Realized I needed a transistor radio and though I'd never noticed them for sale there figured what the heck - sure enough they had a table set up with transistor radios :)
Avatar    Thu. 3/6/14 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):
