Two Halloweeny Stories by Clay / Some Incidental Prog

|
Full playlist at http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/33460
Set: Introduction and Excuses
Set: Perfection's Hand - Clay Pigeon
Set: I suppose this story is loosely based on a recent hospice experience I had with my mom. Although she certainly wasn't like the woman in this story in ANY way. Actually, it was a humbling and life-changing thing, being in that place. I think hopice does magnificent things for families and those at the end of life. Maybe this story was a way of dealing with that experience now that some time has passed.
I feel bad that I didn't get to do an interview-based show. A real Halloween Special, as it were. And I realize that as a writer, I leave a LOT to be desired. Thanks to those of you actually make it through this episode.
Jordan De La Sierra - "Gymnosphere - Song of the Rose" - Gymnosphere - Song of the Rose - Music for the Well-Tuned Piano [This is the music in the background of the stories.]
Kris Kristofferson - "For the Good Times" - Me and Bobby McGee [Recorded by Janis Joplin (Kris' lover) a few days before her death,]
Set: 18:40 - The Fancher House
This story was written the night before the show. It is full of loopholes and errors, like the time I call Reverend Swan, Reverend Snow. I changed his name but evidently missed it one time. Anyway ... hope you enjoy it.
Gordon Lightfoot - "Is There Anyone Home" - Sundown [One of my all-time favorite songs.]
Flash - "Psychosync" - Out Of Our Hands [Featuring Peter Banks, originally from Yes.]
Starcastle - "Nova" - Starcastle [American Prog from St.Louis - very Yes-like]
Set: Goodnight from Clay
Flash - "Farewell Number One" - Out Of Our Hands
Thanks for listening everyone. Again, sorry for no interviews. Maybe next week. In the meantime ... HAPPY HALLOWEEEEEEEEN!!!! Remember to drop me an email:dusty@wfmu.orgalways remember ...

The Bat Bite PLUS 50 Great NBP's!

Set: The Bat Bite ... A Short Story by Clay Pigeon
Set: I was tempted not to post this show as I was disappointed with the way the production of the story turned out. As usual, I left myself no time as the show deadline approached. As an experiment, I grabbed a stack of instrumental LP's and kept rotating them behind the story at random. It seemed like a cool idea, but in the end it would have been much better had I picked music to fit each particular scene. Then again, it's not Dostoevsky so, who cares! I hope you enjoy it. I can think of certain things that inspired it. The way I was warned about the horror of rabies shots as a kid, for one. Living in Wisconsin in an old house that had an attic full of bats. My wife's sister getting scratched by a bat as a kid and having to get rabies shots.
Set: 30:00 -- 50 NBP's! 50 songs "Never Before Played" on the Dusty Show
It's amazing how fast you can exhaust a large record collection when you play them all the time on WFMU. Last week I found myself with "collection burnout." Basically, I felt I had already played almost all of my "good" records on the show over the course of a few seasons. So ... I scraped the bottom of the barrel and tried to find some stuff I'd never aired. To be honest, after hearing this program I think I HAVE played some of these tracks before. Not often though, if ever. I hope you like them. One thing I dig about FMU is the way it breathes new life into tired old music. Re-framing and re-contextualizing them.
Set: Tom Rush
Set: Rhinoceros
Set: Peter, Paul and Mary
Set: Nektar
Set: George Maharis
Set: Hawkwind
Set: Roxx Gang
Set: The Winter Consort
Mahavishnu Orchestra - "One Word" - Birds of Fire [A Miles Davis composition]
So that's it ... quite honestly one of the worst shows ever. Apologies. As much as I hate dropping the proverbial ball, it happens. That's the brutal reality of WFMU's archives. Suck or Impress, you're getting posted for eternity, warts and all. Anyway ... thank you for listening. I do appreciate it. If you'd like to write --- dusty@wfmu.org I read them ALL and really like hearing from you. I do intend to get back on the streets for interviewing soon. Just needed to give it a rest for a week or two. Until next time, take care and ... always remember. Clay P
Set: Trouble Is Evident from the Outset
I was intending to play a lengthy story that I had written a couple of days before the show was to air. "The Bat Bite." As you can hear, however, The tape deck in the studio began to malfunction. At first, I assumed it was my cassette that was defective. Although I did use a brand new, normal bias cassette for this episode, there are always inherent dangers with cassette technology. Jamming, binding, breakage, etc. Turns out, though, that the main cassette unit in the studio had begun to malfunction the previous night and was deemed "Out Of Order." The alternate cassette deck is the one that was "warbling" as the episode began. Needless to say, a couple of minutes in to the show it was evident that I would have to bail out of the cassette situation and fend for myself "live." I must say that ultimately the fault is mine. I should alwas have a back-up CD in the event of cassette failure. I didn't.
Wow. What a weird show. That will teach me to depend on a $1.25 cassette from CVS. Anyway ... despite the difficulties, it was fun. Thanks to Scott Williams and Fabio for sitting in and helping out. Therese, too. And to the callers who gave so generously of their chit-chat. This is the last show of the summer season. Kind of sad to see it go. I had fun with it (always like the summer schedule). Next week begins a new Dusty Show season and I hope you will make it a part of your week. I really appreciate your continued listening and support. I realize I haven't named the e-mailers in a while. That said, I certainly DO read all of your e-mail and it is always the highlight of my day to receive word from you. Here is the address: dusty@wfmu.orgHave a great week ahead and enjoy this magical fall. Life is so good. Thanks again, take care and ... Always remember ...
Thank you sincerely for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. It was thrown together rather hastily. I wish I had taken more time to do each state's little monologue, but that's not how it worked out. Still, it was fun and I hope you enjoyed it. Your input, thoughts, suggestions, opinions, etc., are always welcome at #1 Pigeon Place. Please drop me an e-mail! (NO!)dusty@wfmu.orgUntil next time, enjoy the week ahead and each day of your life. Take care and ... Always Remember ...
Thanks for checking out this episode of The Dusty Show. It was certainly interesting to wade into the crowd in the United Nations Plaza during the UN General Assembly. I was able to learn a few things and to feel some of the passion and pain felt by those involved. It was also good to see people allowed to demonstrate vocally in public without much interference from the police. I would also like to thank Andy Z and everyone at Revolution Books in Manhattan for their kindness and courtesy when I visited their store. If I have any disappointments regarding this episode it is that I didn't have enough time to produce it. Also, I am unhappy with the sound quality of this show. Doing it in analog fashion on cassette machines as I do, there is always some sacrifice of audio fidelity, however, this week it seemed worse than usual, with lots of loss of high-end frequencies. I will do what I can to improve it by next week. Station Manager Ken and I had a discussion about this and the posssibility of going digital. He did admit that it might be nice to hear the improved sonic quality of digital sound on The Dusty Show. At the same time he mentioned that it would be sad to lose the warm analog aspect of the show. This is an ongoing question on my end. Whether to go digital for improved sonic quality or retain the original cassette-oriented sound. I sometimes wonder if entire passages of what people say are not being understood by listeners. I feel that way sometimes, but my ears are fried by years of high-volume music. It is also rarely mentioned by listeners so I have assumed it isn't a problem. If any of you would like to weigh-in on this, I' would be interested in your opinions. I am often asked by listeners why I don't just go digital. It is difficult to explain my process of analog editing with cassette-based technology. And when I do, people think I am insane to go through the effort it takes to pull it off. Still, some of the techniques would be nearly impossible to recreate digitally, and so as long as there are RS-B11W's to be had and as long as I possibly can, I'll probably stay analog like the stubborn old Luddite I am. I sincerely hope that the people of Iran can find the freedom they so desperately deserve and that each of us will speak for them when we can. The same holds true for the people of Honduras and for the practioners of Falun Da Fa in China. May the world grow more peaceful and tolerant and may the wicked change their ways. I'd love to hear from you if you find the time. I like to know where you are listening and what's on your mind. Here's the e-mail address:dusty@wfmu.orgUntil next time, take care and ... always remember.CP - Manhattan USA
Thank you very much for listening. I wanted to make a little departure this week from the political fare I've been doing a lot of lately on The Dusty Show. After voting in the Democratic Primary a few days ago, I realized I knew NONE of the candidates and, in a moment of bald panic, I just starting flipping switches at random. I felt quite guilty about this and VERY hypocritical, mostly because of all the bloated posturing I've done on the show, pretending to be a bit of a political expert. Hogwash! My ignorance was plainly evident to me. So, I had to give it a rest this week. In my guilt and despondency, I happened past a dog park in Manhattan's lovely Madison Square Park. A little bell went off and I thought I'd do a show based around these enthusiastic dog owners. I have no dog, though my wife and I are considering getting a Whippet or Dachsund. These interviews took place at Madison Square Park and Union Square Park. I'd love to hear from you if you'd like to e-mail and make a comment or share a suggestion. Here's the e-address:dusty@wfmu.orgI hope this week is a good one for you. Keep listening and until next time ... always remember.CP
Laird gave me an amazing postcard with a picture he took of the burning towers, He, like many I interviewed, came back to the moments of 9/11 and it was easy to see the pain was still there. Thank you, Laird, for the photo. It will be treasured.
Led Zeppelin - "Stairway To Heaven" - Zoso
Thanks for checking out the show. It is a touchy thing doing a 9/11 show, especially in the NYC area. I was discussing this with Station Manager Ken, who said that most DJ's are afraid to broach the subject. I think I might feel the same way had I actually lived in the city in '01 and had I witnessed the horrors that day. Perhaps living in Milwaukee at that time gave me and gives me a detachment that makes it possible. I hope that I haven't been insensitive to those who may still find the memory of 9/11 traumatic. I realize some of my sound effects are pretty graphic. I also want to note that I don't mean to maliciously lift other reporters interview material for The Dusty Show. In the future I will attempt to be more careful about notating my sample sources in show notes. I had never really considered the legality of it and thought of it more like an art project, creating audio collage from existing sources to add to my own creative content.I hope that you didn't lose anyone in the 9/11 attacks. I hope that you have made your peace with events that day and that you and I can make it a point to spread love where we can and to make it a more peaceful world. That's it for this week. Drop me a line if you find time,dusty@wfmu.orgUntil next time, take care ... and ... always remember .........CP
Another show in the can. I enjoyed getting out and pushing further uptown in Manhattan as I generally hang out below Times Square. I guess I was hoping for an Election Night kind of vibe. In all honesty it was more sedate than I'd hoped. While there were certainly compelling people and stories to be found, the overall tenor of the event was a bit subdued. The magic does seem to have faded and people are obviously worried that Obama is dropping the ball. Time will tell. I was also hoping for a bit more "Town Hall" type dissent to "spice things up," but that boiled down to one guy racing by on foot yelling, "You're runing this country!" I taped him, and lost it on a technical error. THAT was frustrating. I did conclude one thing from all of this. I think I have fallen prey to the journalistic tendency to seek out the loud and the crazy and the sensational. Perhaps I even feel compelled to find that "someone" each week. It makes me understand the appeal of the FAR right and the FAR Left. It makes for more interesting TV and Radio. But, it is surely not representative of the better part of Americans. I think underneath it all I fear boring the crap out of you, which I'm probably doing with all this political content lately. Let me know. I am always interested in your opinions and thoughts. E-Mail me. I love hearing from the listeners.dusty@wfmu.orgUntil next time, have a great week and ... always remember.Clay Pigeon - Manhattan USA
