- of course - not just Python - but The Beatles grew up on the Goons - imagine that in the 50s! - & George Martin's connection to them helped sell him - & same for Richard Lester - to the Beatles too...& I can't help but think prepped Martin to Produce their Psychedelia...

I haven't seen the Peter Sellers thing ..oh maybe some if it. I gotta see the whole thing for sure. Pell Mell, sorted...they are described as indie instrumental rock combo etc.
Sun. 1/26/14 10:41pm Eric the Half a Bee:

The Peacock/Frisell album cover image on the web seems to have the same size font for both, Peacock just has a longer name! Also, the label is Postcards (now distrib'd by Arkadia), the album/CD is titled "Just so happens".
  Sun. 1/26/14 10:42pm LovecraftDude888:

If I'd heard them in 1982 on wNYU I would have been intrigued but would have had no framework to categorize it..then again throbbing Gristle perplexed me at that time also!
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 10:42pm Dave Mandl:

Oops, right about the title. I mentioned that on mic. Thanks.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 10:43pm Dave Mandl:

Definitely different type on the CD, though. Frisell is a lighter typeface, mainly.
  Sun. 1/26/14 10:43pm LovecraftDude888:

I dunno I thought they reminded me a bit of Krautrock like Neu! that go on for minutes and minutes instrumental driving type of stuff
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 10:45pm David L.B. is RRN63:

... a little like the PostRock - pardon - "PostRock" now - just to complicate things further...

I don't even have any of their albums....sadly. Got tons of Sandy Denny, Fairport, and such, though. I used to be into Steeleye Span years ago a bit...only from listening to some guy on wBAI
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:01pm Snortley:

That neighborhood is full of great West Indian restaurants. Check it out if you're back there. Soldiers on Nostrand is good, too.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:02pm Dave Mandl:

@Snortley: I certainly will, thanks. But I'm a vegetarian. I assume that's not a problem?

  Sun. 1/26/14 11:03pm LovecraftDude888:

even own the Bert Jansch anthology. I used to live on Bergen and Flatbush for a time....never ventured to Flatbush that much though or that whole area, Leffert Gardens, etc.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:04pm Snortley:

Well, that limits things. Better go to Soldiers, as they have a wider selection.

I love everything by the Holy Modal Rounders.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:06pm P-9Ø:

@LoveCD: I think you're referring to the "Hour of the Wolf" show on WBAI, had a Steeleye Span tune as regular opening theme, but the guy was an SS and English folk-rock freak so he played other stuff of theirs heavily too
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:06pm Snortley:

There also used to be a West Indian vegetarian place on Church, just east of Flatbush, but they closed, too.

  Sun. 1/26/14 11:08pm Jim:

I remember seeing Jansch and Renbourn play at a local bar/listening room back in the 1980s. Really good show. Not long afterward, Kaukonen and Casady played "Hot Tuna acoustic" at that same venue. Also a very good show.

Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:11pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

The only Holy Modal Rounders I ever knew was "Boobs A Lot." At seven years old we practically peed our pants at that song every time. I still love it.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:11pm P-9Ø:

Ms Pseu was rockin the Katy Perry Friday night
Don't ask why, it's always complicated with her
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:12pm Dave Mandl:

Pseu's got incredibly eclectic tastes. Dyed-in-the-wool FMU gal.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:12pm pacific standard simon:

@Rabbit - Naw, it's Steve Weber. The Rounders joined the Fugs for the first album, then later re-recorded the song on their own.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:13pm LovecraftDude888:

I know that was disturbing....nah now they're doing a mass marriage on Grammys.....thought it was Katy Perry marrying Madonna or whatever but not
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:14pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

It struck me tonight as ironic and not ironic that you can't listen to the Grammys* on the radio.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:14pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Bert Jansch b. 3rd Nov. 1943

...oh - Fugs *&* Rounders - !
...I was ranting rhetoric on Pseu's about young people & contempo Top40. Just making a point & also venting - no critique of Pseu...
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:14pm pacific standard simon:

Pseu got a wild hair up her tush after I responded to her saying her audience was too old by saying I hated Katy Perry. So of course she had to play Perry.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:14pm P-9Ø:

@Rev>R.: and celebrated playwright and actor Sam Shepard was in the HMRs too
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:14pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

* It bugs me that it isn't "Grammies," but it's not.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:15pm P-9Ø:

See? complicated
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:18pm P-9Ø:

@ every witness present:

Just remember, please, that it was NOT me who used the terms "wild", "hair", and especially "tush" in reference to that esteemed "dyed-in-the-wool FMU gal"
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:18pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, and she called us hipsters, too -- that's like dropping the n-word, for the FMU faithful.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:19pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

It seems unfair that this commentary is on Dave's playlist comments page and not Pseu's, but... oh, yeah.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:19pm P-9Ø:

I'm, er.......distancing myself
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:20pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Tim Buckley blended Folk & Jazz - not that he's Brit or like Pentangle...
- Pseu had valid points - but so did we. I don't think Pseu wants any more on her page ! - though I don't know...
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:20pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, it was all there on Pseu's comments, too. Go read it. And now P-9Ø's stirring up the stuff by reminding me.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:21pm LovecraftDude888:

it's ok it was traumatic for all. I had the same reaction to much of the later 90s pop stuff..."How Bizarre" etc. or Chumbawumba.....good for a larf but nothing I would ever purchase
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:22pm P-9Ø:

@Pete from B.: Yeah, that's right, unfair. Let's say for the sake of fairness that we just pass seamlessly and effortlessly on to other topics

I always say if I were 13 years old again I would hear that stuff differently perhaps. I mean the newer, fluffier pop music stuff like Katy's stuff. She's not dreadful but it just doesn't impact me
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:24pm P-9Ø:

Wait! Hold up! LovecraftDude brought up Katy Perry!
I DID NOT stir up no stuff, got it?
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:24pm phat:

Ah, Chris Spedding!

...I just wanna make one more point: Contempo Top40 people may be 'Great Performers' & 'Talented' as everyone gushes these days
- but having Taste & Intelligence & Artistic Sensibilities are 'Talents' too fergawdsake...okay - ?!??...
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:25pm pacific standard simon:

Betcha Jack Bruce is in for a major re-evaluation after he croaks. And overdue.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:26pm 12539:

Pseu might play Juice Newton for you, LCD888.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:26pm LovecraftDude888:

wow gonna have to get that Pentangle box set at some point soon for sure...goddamn and it's cheap, too
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:26pm P-9Ø:

@pss: you mean J. Bruce is underrated?
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:26pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...people trash Clapton - but Cream was too important for me to jump right on that...
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Absolutely right. I meant to play the other song, so I typed in that title. Then I realized I'd actually cued up "Burned the Tables."
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:27pm LovecraftDude888:

haha the Juice Newton HP mashup. If I'm a bad boy she might. And I am.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:27pm pacific standard simon:

@P-9Ø - Ah, true, LD888 was first, you were second.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:27pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I wasn't really saying it was unfair, just that there's not a playlist comments page of her own in which to have this discussion, which isn't odd, except that there's one off-site, so it is odd. That always confused me.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

@LCD888: Pentangle are essential. Their first LP is very underrated. Actually pretty psychedelic.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:28pm P-9Ø:

@Rev: maybe you're right about Clapton, he's either mindlessly venerated or unfairly dissed
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:28pm fleep:

But there is. Pseu has a comments board now.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:28pm pacific standard simon:

@P-9Ø - By everybody but himself. ;)
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:28pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- that's just it Pete - she started Comments for her program & all this went on.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:29pm Droll:

. o O ( Yippie! More 6/8! )
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:29pm Dave Mandl:

Search for "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" on YouTube. There's a fantastic video of Pentangle doing it live at the time (1967?).
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:30pm P-9Ø:

@pss: Haha

@everyone else: Ixnay on the euPsay puh-leeze
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:31pm pacific standard simon:

"Sweet Child", on one of those Warner/Reprise budget anthologies, was my introduction to Pentangle, and remains a favorite.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:31pm LovecraftDude888:

time to go to bed..I meant the KP Juice mashup. ok.. wow the Lorde song is DREADFUL with stuppit video to match. Pretty vacuous. I just cannot get moved by that music at all.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:32pm P-9Ø:

@Dave M.: Yeah, Pentangle ARE essential. If anyone is due for rediscovery/reappraisal, it's they
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:32pm 12539:

Nice track title.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:32pm LovecraftDude888:

but I listened to a lot of Joss Stone the past year or two and she's good and talented!! Why can't she win?
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:32pm LovecraftDude888:

Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:38pm Dave Mandl:

@LCD888: Night, take care! Buy the Pentangle box.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:39pm pacific standard simon:

Does it come in a pentagular box?
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:39pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

OK, I guess I stopped checking.

There was a lot of surprise comments-board appearances lately on shows not normally using the comments board.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:43pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Great to hear the Guerilla Toss. They are a basement favorite here.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:43pm Wow N. Flutter:

Did people get personal towards Pseu ? I was thinking how good that for all that - no one called anyone else a poopoo-head - but maybe I missed it, &/or Comments were Deleted...
- Wonder if this Jimi Bass is Upside-Down? : )
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:48pm a little closer:

I think Hendrix just turned around and faced the wall when he played other folks instruments. That saved him all the trouble to restring the darn thing. :)
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:49pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Jimi played Bass on his own stuff too - on 'ElectricLadyland' - so - not unfamiliar actually...
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:50pm P-9Ø:

Yo,Whooda!
...you mean he faced a mirror? or...???
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:51pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- has been remarked that as a Leftie - Jimi is a mirror to all us other guitarists. True that !...
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:53pm Droll:

I guess that makes Sir Paul the mirror to all us bassists. I'm cool with that. Can't wait to see the best parts of him and Ringo on YT tomorrow!
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:53pm Dave Mandl:

All guitarists think they can play bass. Not true!
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:53pm Whooda:

Yes, just a stupid joke. Turning around would make the guitar neck face the wrong way,That's the dead-giveaway of a lefty player. Sorry for the lameness there.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:54pm Droll:

[weeping profusely on Mandl's shoulder]
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:54pm pacific standard simon:

Just reading about Pablo Casals -- he played at the White House for both Theodore Roosevelt (1904) and John Kennedy (1961)! Quite a span.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:55pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- oh no - Bass is in the Rhythm Section folks...frets're further apart too !; feels weird to go back & forth, actually...
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:56pm P-9Ø:

@Dave M.: True that. I started learning guitar and bass at the same time, and kept up on both, "neck and neck", cuz even when a wee one I knew they were separate thingies
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

Yes, bass necks are usually much longer. You need to be able to really stretch those fingers.
  Sun. 1/26/14 11:57pm 12539:

Thanks, Dabe!
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

A lot of times you can tell that it's a guitarist playing bass. There's something about the way they approach it.
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:59pm Droll:

For me the "Native Bassist" giveaway is finger picking and slap/pop. Guitarists cannot fake either.
Thanks Dave, have a fun week yinz!
Avatar Sun. 1/26/14 11:59pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- someone gave me a Bass - & after a bit - my guitar seemed all tiny & wrong!: you get muscle memory of where things should be...yup - I'm too noodley on Bass - even Jimi used Chords a good bit there you hear - & of course Noel Redding for him was converted to Bass from Guitar...
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 12:00am earrie:

Berry elephant.
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 12:00am David L.B. is RRN63:

- altho' I don't use picks - so I fingerpick anyhow...slap & pop are style choices too, though...
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 12:01am Dave Mandl:

Night, everyone. Have a great week.
  Mon. 1/27/14 12:01am P-9Ø:

@Droll: good pint, especially the fingerpicking approch to bass strings, guitarists aren't comfrortable with it the way "native bassists are
THANKS Dave!!!
Avatar Mon. 1/27/14 12:01am flat out pitch:
