Yeah, pseudoephedrine's an alpha agonist, so it can at high dose make breathing harder.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:17pm rrg:

I can only hear James Wolff here, on this program, and nowhere else. That's a shame but it also makes me feel like we're a bit special here.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:18pm Ike:

I'm ambivalent about Barnett's voice, but the lyrics are great. "The paramedic thinks I'm clever 'cause I play guitar/ I think she's clever 'cause she stops people dying."
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:19pm Mike East:

@Ike - I like it...my wife does a spot on impression of her.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:20pm rrg:

I liked that line too.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:21pm Alison Porchnik:

Hey Irwin, is Jason Moran related to Beans Moran, by any chance? Maybe he can help her break into the music biz. She's got quite a voice, I hear.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:21pm Monica:

this "planet rock" definitely caught me off guard!

i watched two of the full length movies by The Passionate and Objective Jokerfan mastermind Matt Farley this weekend, and would like to report that "Local Legends" is an excellent no-budget DIY flick

Hey, when is the WFMU doc coming out?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:37pm Parq:

After days of sub-zero temperatures, today's 12 degrees feels downright cozy.

I'm hot-blooded, check it and see. I got a fever of 103.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:41pm Droll:

I wonder how long it will take the FMU documentary to end up on YT... or if it will also come with director's comments like "Local Legends"
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:42pm Droll:

This is DJ Donna Summer?!?!?! Where did all the notes go? Is this at half-speed?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 3:43pm steve:

i also watched one of his older movies, Freaky Farley, which was good fun, but WAY different - Local Legends is a super heartfelt feel good bio pic about MFs life, Freaky Farley is an entertaining but intentionally silly horror/comedy b movie

Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:05pm rrg:

I can tell it's incorrect even before she sings the first line.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:05pm Parq:

Droll makes an interesting point -- what kind of extras will there be on the eventual DVD edition of the FMU doc?

Saw Jean-Marc Vallée's C.R.A.Z.Y for the first time recently.
Great flick all around. And a Patsy Cline rare release figures as a plot point.
  Wed. 1/22/14 4:08pm earrie:

Er, I guess it's 'C.R.A.Z.Y.' not 'C.R.A.Z.Y'.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:09pm rrg:

Mr. Ken from Hyde Park: you speak nonsense, sir, when you speak about our future summer wish for winter cold.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this perhaps proposes the options are prolonged subzero & stormy like now - or 90°F w/ 90% humidity like we had...gee, great choice...

@earrie Where did you see it? Is it online anywhere?

Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:18pm Mike East:

Last Sunday, the wnyc Joe Frank episode featured Larry Block's kid. That really gave me a new perspective on Larry Block. Anyone ever hear that one?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:19pm Madoshi:

Haha! It's the 'Detroit Techno Militia', not mafia. Good to know they'll be on the air. They're some of the best techno DJ's out there right now.

The 1970-71 "stoned hippie banter" might be my friends and I. Are the weathermen on there? The 12 drugs of Christmas? Enema Lady? "Changes" was my show, in between being thrown off the air, allowed back and studying at Upsala College.

Wunderschoen. The fundamental loneliness goes when we hear the impeccable style of Herr Ruttkowski.

Ms. deborah, really? That's so cool, if you can lay claim to that 40-year-old banter.

Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:48pm rrg:

So can Piaf, you know. Roll an R, I mean.

And yes, Irwin, I have to admit I like this guy too.

We ALL do. Right, team IC?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:49pm Droll:

I think a Ruttkowski-Shatner duet would work. They share a peculiar cadence & phrasing.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I rolled an R w/ Piaf in 1971...
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:49pm Irwin:

As far as I can tell Wolfgang does not appear in his vids. Either static shots of himself and an accompanist or galleries of painted portraits.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:51pm common:

that's the way to go.
  Wed. 1/22/14 4:51pm deborah:

rrg...I can certainly claim it. It was a great time in my life. My show played a lot of follk and commentary, including Dylan, others much more obscure and the great Phil Ochs whose song "Changes" I took as my theme. I was one of the few women on the station at the time. It changed drastically around 1972 and I graduated Upsala anyway. Came back later to teach there and run the Learning Center until it closed. Happily WFMU lives; it is my main radio station.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:53pm common:

did you really roll an r rev. rabbit?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:53pm Irwin:

Deborah: the version of "Suzanne" did not originate with the WFMU tapes found by Pea Hicks. Unrelated tape.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:54pm rrg:

You should get those recordings from Irwin, or Pea Hicks, or whoever has them.

I would SO love to have even one recording of the radio show I did when I was in university.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Piaf promised she'd say she saw nothing...
  Wed. 1/22/14 4:54pm deborah:

I know. Just heard you mention 1070-71 and "stoned hippie banter" and ears perked.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...now *that * is what FMU is for !...
  Wed. 1/22/14 4:55pm deborah:

rrg...We used to have tapes, some reel to reel. A lot were lost and some of the stuff was just spontaneous. We showed up on each other's shows a lot.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:55pm rrg:

And here's another one. Why don't I hear Lane Steinberg anywhere but here?

Though I must confess I don't get out much.
  Wed. 1/22/14 4:56pm deborah:

I mean 1970-71, Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 4:56pm Droll:

rrg, They're all on YouTube. You sound like a stoned hippie! How many times can you drop a clipboard on-air in an hour?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:13pm rrg:

I guess. I remember a French language cover of "Sweet City Woman" that played in Montreal in the early 1970s. I may be the only one who remembers that.

I feel about the same way the Big Lebowski does.

I heard a word yesterday that immediately reminded me of last week's grammar rant on this board: "Futherance".
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:17pm rrg:

If I can find the audio I'll let you know. But, probably--but for some reason I thought it was actually a cover by someone else, and not just The Stampeders themselves being politically correct (though I don't think that was the phrase in use at the time).

That is where the term "cover song" comes from: covering different markets. Originally it was white artists playing "Race Records" to cover both markets.

Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:22pm rrg:

Yes, fleep and Glenn and Droll and all: that's the song, and I sit corrected about "cover" versions and, well, everything. Just everything. All right?

Filthy hippies, slackjawed yokels, pop stars and fake Floyd. Irwin's show, in other words.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:24pm glenn:

i never had any idea they did it in french, so i had zero beef. thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Heh i thought that but then a couple of times the DJ read my comment. Instead of a moment of pride I was embarassed.

Love Iris. Great show
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:47pm rrg:

Holy cow. Have I ever heard Iris DeMent played on Irwin's show before? Can't remember.

Her voice is so odd, but I've always loved it.

Thanks for the reminder.

...may Iris DeMent in one ear & Blossom Dearie in the other guide me to my Sleep...

Irwin has found his inner Okie today.

Thanks for playing Tom, especially this one.

This is the first Iris Dement song I ever heard twenty something years ago and it melted my heart. What a great choice to play Irwin. Thanks for the memories!
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:51pm dale:

this and a childs song and driving wheel are just stellar.
  Wed. 1/22/14 5:51pm Laura L:

Speaking of unusual voices, you could play Jimmie Dale Gilmore sometime... "Midnight Train" from the album "After Awhile" for instance.

Winter closing in
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:52pm Parq:

I've clicky-starred the Rush, because it really is a favorite, but I agree that the DeMent was wonderful.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:52pm rrg:

There you go again, Irwin. You won't play Joni's version of this song (perhaps my favorite recording of hers) but you keep playing Tom Rush's version. Which I also like. But, well.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:53pm dale:

what does clicky starring do?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:54pm rrg:

It means people can see what you clicky-starred.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:54pm dale:

do i win prizes?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:55pm Droll:

What does looking to see who clicked do?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- it makes you feel like your opinion matters - when in fact it's totally inconsequential...if it wasn't, they'd stop me...
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:56pm rrg:

Iris opened for Nanci Griffith. On whom I've soured for some reason.

I need to introspect about that.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:56pm Parq:

This Neil Dick is what Ira Kaplan would sound like if he didn't have talent.
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:57pm rrg:

Hey. It's almost 18:00. WTF?
Avatar Wed. 1/22/14 5:57pm Mike East:

the only function it serves (as far as I can tell) is that if you hear a song you like, you click a star. Then when you want to remember what songs you heard and liked, you can go back and see. When you click on the songs in your clicky catalogue, it links you back to the playlist where you found them and you can easily play that track in the archive, as long as its time stamped.

Neil Dick snapped me back from the Tom Rush revery. What a segue!

Jimmie Dale's voice drives me batty. Same with Victoria Williams.

Thanks for a fine program, Irwin. The only thing that can follow that is...dinner.

Bye, all.
