Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 9:40am tim from champaign:

Howdy Joe!

Nuts, I just missed Gene Russell. I have his "Talk To My Lady" record. I think I'd be afraid to actually talk to his lady. Mr. Russell looks to be a bit of a bruiser.

Great Joni song. Fairpoint Convention does a wonderful job of this tune also.

Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:24am Lewis:

Thats about -13deg C for those of you who have a somewhat more rational scale for measuring T.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:24am Mike East:

I played my sister's GoGos LP last week cuz I was on "Vacation" and found in the same sleeve my long lost Johnny Mathis Christmas album. Was glad that I saved the sleeve to that one. So many memories with that xmas album.

Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:35am common:

thanks for playing altered images, joe! haven't heard this since i was a young-un.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:37am Joe McG:

You bet, fellows! Hey, Mike Sin!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:38am Cecile:

that's a hip 80s jukebox right there.

Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:39am Joe McG:

@Yvonne: :)
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:39am Jeff:

Hey, was the beginning of this Martin Denny piece used over the close of Pee Wee's Playhouse?
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:40am Cecile:

this is funny.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:41am Cecile:

I think someone should do a "you damn kids" show. This would be a great choice.
  Thu. 12/12/13 10:43am 12539:

Hey, Dizzy didn't mention twerking!
  Thu. 12/12/13 10:44am P-90:

Do the Mouse! You can do it in your house. Do the Mouse!
(The Gen-Xers know...)
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:44am Joe McG:

@12539: Somebody needs to cover it and get that one in!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:45am Jeff:

Okay, I tried asking The Internet. Somebody says the opening theme to Pee Wee's Playhouse is an hommage to Quiet Village, but written by (Martin Denny fan) Mark Mothersbaugh!

Yes, that Mark Mothersbaugh.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:48am Marcel M:

A bottle, your memory and me... that is an awesome line.
  Thu. 12/12/13 10:50am P-90:

---But the Pee-Wee closing theme was different. I don't 'member if it was a Mark B. original. When he's hired to do music for movies/tv/etc. he typically composes a theme and selects existing music for other bits on the show. Good Question about the closing
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:50am herb.nyc:

THE NEW HOPE, great band name, and makes sense for 1969. (yes, "a bottle, yr memory and me" is a great line - it immed'ly makes me think of song "he's got you". what's the line, "i've got your picture, he's got you" i think.)
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:51am Tome:

good set Joe wtg !!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:52am Lewis:

@jeff - that sounds very believable. Mothersbaugh has done a lot of sound track stuff where you wouldn't necessary expect it (e.g. rocket power and the one with the little kids on Nick and lots more)
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope this isn't too harsh, but... . Between the bottle, your memory and me, one of the three isn't going to make it through the night.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:53am tim from champaign:

@cecile - agreed! Those goddamn kids with their energy drinks and smart phones need some pull up their damn pants comeuppance!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:54am Joe McG:

Thanks, Tome! Havin' fun.
  Thu. 12/12/13 10:54am P-90:

@Lewis + Jeff: that Pee wee job was when he was breaking in, helped him get those other gigs later
  Thu. 12/12/13 10:55am P-90:

@KFHP: haha! good one
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:59am Joe McG:

@Ken: I'm still trying to figure out which one!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:59am duke:

@KFHP Great line, sounds like the start of a C&W song.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 10:59am Roberto:

Yep, Mark and Bob both worked on the Rugrats. I remember being surprised by that back when my kids was little and they was watchin' that there show.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:00am Cecile:

and Mark Mothersbaugh took over from Todd Rundgren for the music on that show.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:00am tim from champaign:

Hey cecile - I heard it's mighty cold up in your neck of the woods. How cold is it currently?
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:01am Cecile:

Pee Wee's Playhouse, I mean.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:01am Cecile:

It's about -5. It sucks.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:02am Cecile:

invictus was a great record label
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:03am Roberto:

You haven't heard the Joe Cocker version? Dude.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:04am herb.nyc:

in ref to the cold, i'm reminded of & paraphrasing a PJ O'ROURKE line now: "if the liberals are so fond of the outdoors & the environment, then let's just leave the homeless alone"
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:04am βrian:

"Joe Cocker, Live and in pain!"
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:05am Mike Noble:

confirmed, duck dunn & taylor mccashen wrote hitchcock railway.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:05am tim from champaign:

Woo doggies, cecile. It's about +5 here. It usually doesn't get this cold in central IL until February.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:08am Mike Noble:

@Joe I don't know if wfmu has it, but there's a band on Slumberland called The Terry Malts (who have appeared on EFD's show) who put out a flexi cover of "I could be happy" this year
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:08am P-90:

Mark B. was an early pioneer of the practice of a single composer/arranger doing entire scores alone, using synths, samples, etc.
Danny Elfman has since become the king of this (Simpson's theme, almost all of Tim Burton's movies,...)
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:08am Kurt Gottschalk:

ok, you made me laugh out loud holding the record cover up to the mic for us.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:09am Cecile:

it usually doesn't get this cold until January. ugh.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:10am Kurt Gottschalk:

there's generally two friday the 13ths per year but last year there were three (the first year i was on fridays). next year there's only one, which is good as i'm running out of ideas.

mornin' joe.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:12am Joe McG:

Hey, King Kurt! I think your Friday the 13th shows are fun. Looking forward to #6 next year!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:13am common:

hey ya kurt!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:14am Mike Noble:

I cannot find the title of the David Band painting on the cover of "I could be happy," so I cannot determine whether or not it is a portrait of Pete Townsend.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:14am tim from champaign:

Who plays guitar on "Live at the Whiskey"? Herbie played with some killer guitar players during this time. Also, did Herbie play topless at the Whiskey?
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:15am PKNY:

Feeling this Herbie Mann track, will have to see if I this particular record at home among the other Herbie records I've picked up.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:16am P-90:

Back in the day, it was occasionally female patrons who "played topless" at the Whiskey
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:16am Kurt Gottschalk:

hey common. thx, joe. herbie mann grand slam, yo!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:17am Joe McG:

@Mike: Thanks for trying! @tim: It's Sonny Sharrock, who we'll hear from shortly.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:18am herb.nyc:

TERRY MALTS flexi "i could be happy"? oh so excellent. (is there a WFMU person who actively collects flexis?)
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:19am tim from champaign:

Man, what a cut!
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:22am P-90:

@herb: DJ MAC collects, archives, curates, and reads and writes about the whole history of Flexis
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:23am Mike Noble:

@herb.nyc were you lucky enough to get a flexi? actually i'm not even sure if they sold out. Mac runs a makeshift flexi museum, but i don't know if terry malts would be up his alley.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:24am Cecile:

HEY AQUALUNG!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:25am Mike Noble:

here's that flexi altered images cover: soundcloud.com...
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:25am PKNY:

@P-90: to be fair, Herbie decided to rock a shirt for the cover of that record. Also, I figured it had to be Roy Ayers on the vibes, and searching for the cover confirmed it.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:26am tim from champaign:

@Cecile - good one! My favorite heckle is "Go back to France!"
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:27am slater:

epic Herbie
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:28am Joe McG:

@slater: The B of this LP is great, too, a Rufus Thomas song that Sharrock explodes in about 3/4 of the way through.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:28am KP:

Hey Joe. Car is parked and I'm in my safe eastside home.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:28am earrie:

Fine listening, JOe.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:29am Guido (Cologne):

Herbie Mann was a surprise.
I must admit that I only have a scratchy copy of memphis underground, thus I maybe not really appreciated this artist enough.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:29am P-90:

@Cecile: PLAY FREE BIRD! PLAY WHIPPIN" POST!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:29am Joe McG:

Thanks for sticking with me through the twists and turns, earrie. Hey, KP! "Safe at Home"!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:30am Cecile:

my favorite heckle of a bad artist was:
"booooooooooooooooo!"
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:30am Mike Noble:

hey flute jazz and carnatic music fans, i picked this up recently and highly recommend it: jazztimes.com...
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:30am Cecile:

sometimes cleverness is not necessary
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:31am Sumpin':

This song sounds like masturbation.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:31am Parq:

Interesting thing I just recently learned about Sharrock. He was responsible for the bracing guitar-driven music on the dizzy talk show spoof "Space Ghost Coast to Coast", which proved that, contrary to what your mother or your grade school teacher told you, people *will* pay you to just sit around and act goofy all day.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:31am earrie:

@Joe McG A pleasure.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:31am Cheri Pi:

Oh man, this album reminds me of my black cat who passed away last year just before Christmas, RIP Lio. wrapping gifts without you will never be the same.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:32am Cecile:

Parq, yeah. But Zorak always cracked me up.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:32am herb.nyc:

@mike noble - i don't have the TERRY MALTS flexi. i just love old school things, like cassettes and print zines. and thanks for DJ MAC info, you too @P-90.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:32am tim from champaign:

Mr. Sharrock is also a television show scholar.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:33am Cecile:

this song title sounds like something Drexciya would come up with.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:33am Joe McG:

@MIke: That album looks cool! I hope we get it here.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:33am P-90:

"Go back to France" haha those Red State types are so witty. But yeah, Cecile, sometimes nothing's like a good BOOOOO!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:33am Sean B.:

Joe, Had to sign in to chime in on what a really good set today you have brought us; Thanx for the great music this morning!. I hope all is warm with you man.

Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:36am Joe McG:

Thanks, Sean B! Stay warm out there!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:36am Cecile:

'Cile, I've heard that yelled at particularly ill-cast burlesque shows.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:40am Cecile:

Don't even get me started about burlesque shows. I don't mind when people work in the tradition, but when they recreate old, offtensive routines scene for scene, ye Gods.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:42am northguineahills:

Never got the burlesque thing myself, although I do like old-timey burlesque music.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:43am P-90:

I thought it was the "authentic", "vintage" stuff that gets the most cred from the New Vanguard of ecydisiasts
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:44am Cecile:

P-90, some stuff is better left in the past.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:45am Whosondephone:

Oh Boy! My two favorite DJs in a row today! :D

Qick last minute haloo!! Very Irene-y dreamy.

@Whosondephone: Scott McD and Fabio, right?
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:48am P-90:

Are we talking about the quaint, gentle, relatively tame stuff like slowly pulling off the gloves, wriggling w/feather boa, leaving the foundation garments on, etc? It gets boring fast, but it's like soft R-rated
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:49am KevinfromBayRidge:

Lemme try Quick

Susan Alcorn is great live....
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:50am Brian in UK:

Did I notice a hint of 'With a Little Help from my Friends' back there in the last set. Lawd knows where.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:51am Cecile:

No, we're talking about insulting routines about Asians and Native Americans. Not quaint.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:53am SeanG:

woo hoo!

Ohhhh...they did a lot of "Yellowface" and "Redface" minstrelsy stuff? The "exotic dancers'? Didn't know that
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:54am fleep:

And yes, another great show to clone from the archives. Gonna listen to this one in the fleepmobile.

Good work Joe!
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:55am Sumpin':

Do people who go to burlesque strip shows actually get offended? I'm guessing burlesque today is like something more for the ladies? I don't think dudes go to strip clubs and get huffy over dance routines.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:56am Joe McG:

Thanks for listening, everybody!
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:56am Cecile:

In this particular troupe. Not all!

A lot of people have modern clothes and modern music.
And other people use the old style to satirize the present time.

Also, there can be a lot of great singers and acrobats in burlesque. Not here.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:56am Guido (Cologne):

Beautiful show Joe!
think I enjoyed the last hour most.
CU next week.

(And yes, I dig JUNGLE EXOTICA and all that vintage burlesque stuff.)
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:56am P-90:

It says that British show ran until 1978?!! Really?
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:56am earrie:

Thank you, Joe.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:56am Cecile:

Sujmpin. It's not the nudity. It's the crappy ethnic jokes that even my earthy 90 year old in-laws would be embarassed to tell.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:57am duke:

Thanks Joe!
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:57am 12539:

Thanks, Joe.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:58am P-90:

I get it -- not the dancing, the comedy that went with it. Yow.
Avatar Thu. 12/12/13 11:58am Cecile:

I like the music. I like the dancing (if it's not just ass-wiggling). I like the sets. I like the corny MCs. But a lot of the humor if not dodgy, is outright offensive.
  Thu. 12/12/13 11:58am P-90:

Thanks for the delicious show,Joe McG
Avatar Thu. 12/19/13 7:05pm Holly in NC:
