Avatar 3:45pm
amEdeo:

I wasn't always on board with it, but I've really come around to "y'all". I feel like it covers a lot of ground in a playful and friendly way, without spending too much time singling out specific individuals.
Avatar 3:45pm
slugluv1313:

hi Kurt! hi everyone! yup, did not have internet for awhile :(
glad to be back :)
and inundating you all with Hungarian Satanic smiley faces, buahahahaha!
Avatar 3:48pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

welcome back, slug!

i've always been fond of y'all. the tennessee half of my family said it. it's a useful word. and it's just silly that 'you' is both singular and plural.
Avatar 3:53pm
Carmichael:

So is "aloha". No wait, that's hello and goodbye. Never mind.

Hi Kurt!
Avatar 3:57pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

ha! we were just talking about 'aloha' over here! that's what the beatles are singing at the end of 'hello, goodbye': 'hey-la hey-aloha,' since it means both hello and goodbye!
Avatar 4:02pm
Carmichael:

What a coinky dink! Don't you East Coasters say *yous* to differentiate?
Avatar 4:13pm
Jeff:

I'm trapped in a world of threes.

But this guitar jam is [er, was] fantabulous.
Avatar 4:18pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

god, i know. i broke my own heart hitting the wrong cd player there!

carm, 'youse' has pretty much fallen from fashion, and i'm a transplant. the new york accents are really disappearing!
Avatar 4:18pm
Carmichael:

Hey, just re-watched Heathers on Saturday, and the closing credits roll to Sly's great version of this song.

Yinz should check out this map of 'Merican dialects: aschmann.net...
Avatar 4:20pm
Green Mountain Man Mark:

but why do southerners say "y'all come back now" followed by a "you hear?" Why not Y'all come back now Y'all hear?
Avatar 4:22pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

cuz that'd just sound silly!
Avatar 4:22pm
Seanbelly:

I'm late, didn't miss anything did I?
Avatar 4:23pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i suppose if the plural "y'all" has been established then on second reference 'you' is understood to be collective.
Avatar 4:23pm

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...they use "y'all" in language instruction books for conjugation - I think that says something for it...
- 'aloha' means *more* than just hello&goobye: it has connotations of good will & right living...
Avatar 5:56pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...goodbye is a contraction of 'God Be w/Ye' of course...good timing for that
