Very sad to hear about Maxwell's. Hi Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:09pm Droll:

You've got to catch the Arrington interview -- he starts by gushing over Bruford's snare and use of space, then he starts singing. I need to find the full original for that.

Mr Partidge, as in Andy?

Yes, that Partridge.

Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: You can say "holy", but you'd better not be referring to a "hole"!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:20pm G:

holes are ok, as long as they are nonanatomical
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Carlin: You can say 'prick your finger' - but not 'finger your prick'...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:20pm rrg:

It's afternoon here too!

Just like you said.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:22pm rrg:

What was that you said? Holy Ssss?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:22pm Caryn:

@Matt: that just instantly brings to mind Robin saying to Batman, "Holy rusted metal. Batman!" About a rusted grate full of holes. As G said, nonanatomical holes are A-OK.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:22pm rrg:

Try some pie.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- pricked his finger & sprung a leak - SSssss...

Holy cyst, Batman!
Hey Caryn, we were on the same wavelength just now :)
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:23pm Caryn:

@RRN63: yeah, apparently the rule is, "It is ok to talk about the ass, as long as there is nothing going in or coming out of it."
  Wed. 6/5/13 3:24pm common:

that was soderberg, too...wasn't it?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:24pm Caryn:

Rob Lowe's non-moving face was unbelievably awesome, though.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:24pm rrg:

Liberace was a homosexual? is that what you're saying?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Why can't they just make a great Documentary? Only Dramas sell is why.
  Wed. 6/5/13 3:25pm lou:

Did George Liberace make an appearance?

...butt plugs + my lunch = another day at the orifice...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:26pm Tome:

...agrees with you wholeheartedly ...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:27pm Caryn:

Oh Irwin, it had a baseball subplot. All about pitchers and catchers, from what we could tell... *pa-dum-pum*
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Austin Powers expressed his shock upon learning that to me--I think he must've misheard something. I mean Liberace? I mean the next thing you know, they're going to say Rock Hudson is gay!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Irwin's like AustinPowers, rrg: He didn't see that coming
- like I felt reading Stephen Davis' Jim Morrison biog. (so much for yer great macho heroes)...or like I felt watching 'Velvet Goldmine' - but that's how the story goes...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:29pm rrg:

Trace Adkins...THAT guy.

I still say that Penn wuz robbed.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:29pm Droll:

I want to remember Lee for his wit and musicianship on the TV show. I guess it's just a matter of time before Michael Jackson gets the same film treatment, not looking forward to that either.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:30pm Caryn:

It has to be said, going into a Liberace bio based on a book written by his one-time drug-addicted boy toy, you shouldn't expect a detailed bio centered around his musical career. Bitchy drama is what you're getting.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

yer can say 'Hillbilly Bone' - butt yer don' wanna bone that hillbilly...paddle faster, I hear banjoes...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oddly enuff, Irwin's cat loved it, however...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: On the plus side, they've reconstructed Liberace's house from photos very accurately, and Debbie Reynolds plays his elderly Polish mother. She knew Liberace and apparently his mother as well, so appro casting there.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Liberace was probably nowhere near the worst person in LosAngeles...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:35pm Irwin:

@Matt: There were women in the film?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- no women - sounds dull as the seven wide screens of Sports @ the pub...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:38pm hamburger:

quite the interesting song
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I tot ToddHayne's 'VelvetGoldmine' about GlitterRock was really good, btw...just a lotta buggery for a male hetero, but nobody asked me...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:40pm Caryn:

@Matt: Michael Douglas knew Liberace through his dad since childhood, apparently, so appro casting there, too.
Actually, considering the people in the story, a better central character for a tv movie of his own would be Scott Thorson himself. I mean, after the Liberace relationship, he went on to squeal on the mob, end up in witness protection, get shot, be involved in various shady and bizarre dealings... The reviewer who said that the "BTC" epilogue text just telling us Thorson now lives in Reno was like making a movie about Lindsay Lohan's childhood and having the epilogue text be "LL now lives in LA" has it right. Kinda omitting a lot of stuff there.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:40pm hamburger:

cool band name, nobody asked me
Wed. 6/5/13 3:44pm Listening Out There:

Horace Silver isn't very tall.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: Just a dear mother, and she's dressed *dreadfully*...

@Caryn: Ahh, a connection on Michael's part as well! That's great. In any case the lack of Scott Thorson's post-Liberace story just means that we need to see Matt Damon in a sequel next year!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:44pm Alison Porchnik:

Sorry I missed all the BTC talk, especially Irwin's take. Boy, was that ... something.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:45pm G:

he seems tall enough to reach the keys
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:48pm G:

little pink rhyme schemes for you and me!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:50pm Joe McG:

Fun listener quiz: What famous John co-wrote this song with John Cougar Mellencamp?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I don't think they're obligated to bowdlerize the truth about people, & I don't want that
- but balance it w/ their gifts & virtues
...I think a filmaker is entitled to their own Impressions & Statement - but what really happens is only one person is gonna get the big $$$ to make a big Horrorwood BioPic - & that's gonna seal it in a lotta people's minds...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:51pm G:

John Prine co-wrote
  Wed. 6/5/13 3:51pm Cal:

@Joe McG: I'll take a stab. Elliot Spitzer?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:51pm Joe McG:

@Cal: We have a winner!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:52pm G:

*I cheated -- i was on the Uh-Huh wiki page to check if that was also the pink houses album
Wed. 6/5/13 3:53pm Listening Out There:

Anyone who listens to Irwin is a, uh, winner...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:53pm G:

or, whiner :)
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:53pm Matt from Springfield:

A-Ha winner! Or, should that be an A-Ha winner?...
Wed. 6/5/13 3:54pm Listening Out There:

"Irwin" is a no-whine zone...Irwin never whines...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:54pm G:

my bad :)
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: As long as you're not being a whine snob, whining that certain whines aren't "up to snuff"..
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- gotten in the habit of calling him 'John Cougar ConcentrationCamp' (was that a band??)
- but his latest album shows me an artist can surprise you :
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:56pm G:

contemporary country, the great FMU audience chaser !!!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:56pm Ike:

Alison, I got the vague impression that Irwin didn't like it very much.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:56pm G:

many whines are not up to snuff. just up to sniff.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:57pm Droll:

G, Imagine what the C&W fans have to say about your beloved Yes records!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:58pm G:

exactly. most people are narrow minded, just about all different things.

howe's pedal steel probably makes countryphiles plotz.

Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 3:59pm Irwin:

@Ike: It was a beautifully made film that I never have to watch again. It'll take a long time for the scars to heal.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- it's amazing (?!) no one's ever made a film about Elvis telling his *real* story...perhaps they fear an 'Merikuhn fatwa of sorts...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:03pm G:

Elvis Honesty has left the building
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:04pm Droll:

RRN, What do you mean by "Real Elvis Story"? Faked his death? Why he was really shaking hands with Nixon? Culinary favorites?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- rather be Beatles or Stones?
Andrew Loog Oldham (Stones original manager): 'It's not their [Beatles] fault they were the lovable ones in an unlovable world.'
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:06pm Caryn:

My fave Elvis story is probably the stories both Alice Cooper and Liza Minnelli have told of the night they and some others were invited to Elvis' place. Classic weirdness capped with Elvis and Linda Lovelace spending the night together.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:07pm davex:

Hello everyone, what is all this about Elvis faking his death? I thought that was Andy Kaufman.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:08pm G:

Like in Macbeth, kind of, Elvis could not die because he was not actually human.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:09pm Mick:

Let's you and her spend the night together
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:09pm Droll:

G, You're confusing Elvis with the animatronic made to replace Sir Paul after the car thing.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:10pm G:

i am so confused this afternoon, i admit it :p
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I mean - knowing the Physician's Desk Reference *sideways*, going into people's bathrooms & raiding their cabinet for pills - whilst simultaneously shaking hands w/ Nixon to get a DrugEnforcementAgancy police badge whilst also badmouthing The Beatles for being a bad influence on youth - so on...I sympathize w/ Elvis for being a great artist w/ bad management & stifled potential...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:11pm Mike East:

I read a bit in the NY'er today quoting Jerry Hall as saying her daughter's gold safety pin earring was "punk"...my blood began to boil. Sorry for the Jagger tangent
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:12pm Mike East:

I mean, maybe it'd be punk... if she hocked the gold for smack.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:14pm G:

with all the plastic surgery on Paul, I could buy animatronic visually. or, his plastic surgeon was a Madame Tussaud's fan
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- is she an Avril Lavigne fan? She dresses real Punk...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:16pm Lizardner Dave:

Man, that's like when the classic rock stations play "Heartbreaker" without playing "Living Loving Maid". Now I'll have to go to You Tube and listen to "I Got You".
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

McCartney's 71 fergawdsake! People talk about his eyebrows - like when did McCartney *not* have those eyebrows??...
  Wed. 6/5/13 4:17pm lou:

Just 'cause your mom is Sissy Spacek doesn't make you country, does it??
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:17pm Caryn:

@Mike: well, Jerry Hall can get an orgasm just by getting warm, so I guess for her, minor things have an exaggerated result. Sure, a gold safety pin earring is punk, And I'm sure her morning toast is manna from heaven, and a flat tire is a precursor to armageddon.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:17pm G:

i'd love to see what he looks like, actually. like a dorian gray thing. but we'll never know, will we :)
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:22pm Droll:

G, I also think Sir Paul could pull off the Elder Statesman/Avuncular role.

@revolution rabbit - did you hear Scharpling dis Joe Frank last night? (I myself am a huge Frankophile)
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:29pm Ike:

What's this about Joe Frank's new episodes? I didn't quite catch that.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:31pm Alison Porchnik:

Irwin will be airing five recently produced episodes at the end of his shows over the next few weeks.

Just as long as they don't start airing Alan Watts again. Ay Caramba.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I barely got a glimpse of Bronwyn's - but it looked like it might've been a place (Program) around here to get Political & vent...hard to know if ever woulda took off...
- I haven't picked up on Scharpling yet: Talk Radio to me means Harry Shearer (I may be alone here in that) & - Joe Frank. : ) That may be my loss.
- I have become a Hearty White fan very quickly - prob. inevitable, had my name on it...

Davex, No, flagrant loops like this are just plain torture. I'll leave it at that.

- As Julian Cope notes - (shortly) before The Stooges there was Blue Cheer.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:42pm Eyepatch Fox:

Let there be SmartPop.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:44pm Alison Porchnik:

I want 10 CDs'worth of SmartPop so I can listen all summer.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

KCRW's 'Morning Becomes Eclectic' & their Eclcetic24 stream *might* help a bit, A.P. - if you're up for NPR L.A. stylee...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- a 24/7 stream of good PowerPop would be quite welcome as an option on my fantasy planet (the sky is a lovely color & I like it)...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:54pm Caryn:

So, are the Joe Frank shows gonna start today or on a later Irwin show?
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:56pm Irwin:

The Joe shows will be announced. Probably start next week or the week after.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 4:56pm Caryn:

Good to know. Thanks, Irwin!

yeah, for sure...thanks Irwin!

he said he met him, and...meh. Then he did a little impression of him. Then he said that he has eclipsed Joe Frank [as a broadcaster, I presume].
The impression was kinda funny. I don't really think Joe Frank was ever such a giant that eclipsing him is a huge accomplishment. He seems to operate in the shadows of the mainstream anyway...though fans of him typically hold him in VERY high regard, with good reason, imho.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ha G!

_ I think Frank is one of those Stealth Giants - let's call them?; Flies below radar, then you realize every worth listening to says they are huge fans.
- Maybe it's 'cause I was in Southern California - SantaBarbara - but all the DrunkenPoets I used to hang w/ were all quite upfront about JoeFrank being Great...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah G - Playlist reloading @ same time delays it, methinks...I'm supposed to have 53 gig of nothin' left on this SteveJobsJetsons jobber here...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:13pm G:

let's try not to get too excited...

Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:14pm Mike East:

I gotta hang out with more drunkenpoets. I don't know anyone (outside this comments board) that knows who the fuck Joe Frank is.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- is that JerryHall's daughter w/ 'em??..
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:17pm Droll:

G, Done. No excitement whatsoever. Now, if Nile was there with them I'd make the teenage-girl "Squeeee!!!" sound.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:20pm Ike:

Goddamn it, I fracked up that comment. But I think you get the point. Switch to a credit union!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:20pm G:

hatas alert!!!!!!! contemporary country warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  Wed. 6/5/13 5:21pm lou:

Anyone been? http://countrybaril.com/
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:22pm Lizardner Dave:

But how big is his deck???
  Wed. 6/5/13 5:22pm Thierry:

I bet you can't smell the coffee roast today in front of that tavern like in the days of the picture!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:24pm Droll:

I love contemporary country: it's extremely high quality power pop except the arrangements add slide guitar and fiddle. They also typically buy their songs from pro writers instead of making entire albums of filler.
Great stuff: pro songs, pro session cats, pro engineers... C&W is every bit as good as disco.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:25pm G:

do they actually play instruments, droll? how quaint :P
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - I self-identified as another lousy caucasian male playing bluesbased guitar - but did not associate w/ musicians - the drunkenpoets were my friends.- tho' I were neither a Poet nor a Drunk. It was a necessary phase in my literate/intellectual development, being from a little town & uneducated. If you must hang w/ them, you must - be my guest...it might take me a while to find someone here in NewHampsha who knew JoeFrank...
- FlowerTravelingBand! - something else JulianCope clued me into...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:26pm Irwin:

@Droll: I like it because it's mainstream rock that's better than most mainstream rock. And it's storytelling in song.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:26pm Caryn:

Oh look, Toby Keith's place serves "freedom fries"... I thought that foolishness went away about a decade ago?
  Wed. 6/5/13 5:27pm Thierry:

First clued, then glued.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:31pm G:

Oh BTW Droll, while traveling to Maryland for family stuff last Friday I caught WPHT 1210 out of Philly playing the original "Can you give me an example?" spot more than once. Yes, some things just can't be killed.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- all true
- but then I smell a pernicious RupertMurdochFoxNews picture of the world being peddled in ContempoCountry - the Nashville Johnny Cash was giving the finger to, methinks
...maybe it seems quainter in NYC than it does here in smalltown NewHampsha (that's redundant but I'm making a point) - where's there's two whole radiostations of it, & postmenopausal coworkers who call that 'the normal radio' & *all* other music weird...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:35pm Droll:

G, I must not be trying hard enough. If they're still running the ad there's still hope I can receive a cease-and-desist.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:36pm G:

Find their advertising agency and send them links.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:37pm Droll:

Dear Select Quote,

I heard your ad. Again... Meh. I eclipsed you.

Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:38pm G:

Maybe they'd be ashamed to admit ownership.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

G: ...Playlist reloading seems like why posting a Comment is slow
- but *today* I gotta Copy my Post & actually close the Window & start over!
...like you're Kenzo or something...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- used to think Country was Rock just 20 years behind
- which would put Kuntry now in its' fin-de-siecle Grunge phase
- altho' I'm not sure that formula holds anymore Post-Mod 21st Century...
  Wed. 6/5/13 5:50pm Thierry:

I just caught up with the beginning of the comments, and man! Maxwell's is closing? The greatest venue on earth!
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:51pm Caryn:

The Nakura makes me feel like I'm watching one of my fave black & white films...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thierry: Joe Belock just had a pretty long interview w/ the owner on 'ThreeChordMonte'.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:52pm northguineahills:

RRN63: You're thinking too much! Outside of the rare outlier, there has been nair anything worthwhile out of 'Nashville' since the mid 80s (there are some notable exceptions).
  Wed. 6/5/13 5:53pm Thierry:

Thanks RRn63. Can't listen live too often these days. I'll check the archive.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yerknow - if yer an AlternaSnob

Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:54pm northguineahills:

I meant 'nary', not nair, the hair stripper brand.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I'm informed there's something called 'RedDirt Country' - which might be somewhere twixt Outlaw & AltCountry - ???...
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 5:59pm Droll:

Thanks Irwin, until next week, happy trails.
Avatar Wed. 6/5/13 6:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx Irster, Sir!

I'm on hold w/ the agency w/ the last $600 of my student loan money (The dole just ran out on me), and they are playing Randy Travis.
