"Here’s a question I asked myself: Would I rather have my phone records collected and readied for possible inspection by the National Security Agency, or have my genitalia scrutinized by the Transportation Security Administration? One answer is, why choose? In today’s America you can have both." — Jeffrey Goldberg

On Coronation Street, "Devendra" is a man's name. Is that true here as well? Sounds like it.

Corrie's Devendra is not a Spanish speaker, though. And everyone calls him "Dev".

Avatar    Wed. 6/12/13 3:20pm Ike:

Caryn, for some reason, the word "bitch" does not run afoul of the authorities, at least not in the last 20-25 years or so. You have to head into "shit" or "fuck" or the nuclear-level C-word (the one that Brits throw around recklessly to our ears) to get their attention.
Avatar    Wed. 6/12/13 3:20pm rrg:

"Homoeroticism" means "self-love", right? I mean, looking at the Greek roots and all that.

Shame on everyone who gives all their contacts, conversations, pictures, etc., to Facebook but complains about government monitoring. FB not only tricks users into doing all the information gathering for free, but cash in on it themselves.

Considering that Akhenaten had at least 4 wives, I think Nefertiti was used to him hanging out with other women from time to time. As long as she was number 1 wife, she didn't really mind.

- Reassuring incompetence? Not what we thot in the J.Edgar/Nixon days - or the Reagan - or the Duhbya days...
Avatar Wed. 6/12/13 4:54pm G:

wasn't it clear already in the late 90s that self-termed web 2.0 was mainly a way to get "muppets" to volunteer to create and aggregate terabyte upon endless terabyte of web content for free, just to be "famous" -- which in turn in copiable, savable, and parsable for whatever reason forever, if nothing changes? on one of my liter. discussion lists back then there was a palo alto dude who was clanging the alarm about that nearly every week.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/13 4:55pm G:

why should they contract with google when they can mandate google to give them whatever. much easier and cheaper
Avatar    Wed. 6/12/13 4:56pm rrg:

Same old story. It's only an outrage when the other guy (not "my guy") is doing it.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/13 4:57pm Caryn:

@Droll: incompetence in many authorities wouldn't reassure me (except in the sense that they make vast conspiracies way less likely to occur - at least successfully), but when the point of a company in many ways is to delve into your data to try and sell you stuff and they fail at it miserably? Then it's a delight.
Avatar Wed. 6/12/13 4:59pm G:

the younguns will save us from this. they are not gonna stand for having every keystroke of their online presence and every cell call recorded for parsing forever. polling already shows that older people fall for the security argument much more so than under 40s

Well worth checking out talks by William Binney & Thomas Drake on youtube - dubya era whistleblowers, the move towards mass collection of telecom/net data was happening even before 9/11,

The kicker is, the public can't be roused to do anything about it, game over.

Caryn, The only "analysis" you see at FB is on behalf of deodorant, insurance and car companies, which is hardly representative of the information FB collects, mines, re-mines, re-re-mines, and sells to others to mine. Even if they suck today, they'll get better and they'll have more information by then, too. You do not have any say in the control of the records they keep on you, what they're used for, or how long they're kept.

Mark my words: In the very near future all commercial telecommunications will be operated and paid for by advertising companies. Google is already in the phone business, and they already transcribe phone messages. In the future, they will offer free phone service and pay for it by listening in on your conversation and sending you ads about your conversation topics later.
