Live performance by Chuck Johnson

Wrap a raga around a Chinese melody, or an Elizabeth Cotton blues, or a Roscoe Holcomb-style Appalachian guitar tune, and you'll get an inkling of where Chuck Johnson's guitar technique comes from. Johnson's fingerstyle playing touches on those influences and on elements in nature, occasionally adding a touch of electronics to the mix. Chuck's newest release, "Crows in the Basilica," is out now on Three Lobed Recordings, with a heavy focus on what he calls "folk minimalism." Chuck Johnson dropped by Irene's show to play some of it live.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- miking acoustic not always easy, of course
- great tone (not to be nerdy - but what kind of guitar?)
- & great picking obviously (almost 'ragtimey' on 'Albion')...
Avatar 1:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'ragtimey' rhythm, maybe (not the song)
- good interview, & a lovely player - great technique, but in service of composing...

@gi, I just put up the page and it's the sound file at the top. Pops right up for me. @Van, Chuck mentioned he would be putting some of this out in the fall. I'll see if I can get a link. Meanwhile, his website appears to be broken but you can check it out later at www.chuckjohnson.net

Enjoyed Chuck, both his guitar and electronics!
  2:40pm
Robert:

Before I heard the lyric, I thought it was going to say, "The Battle of Verdun"! And the Union involved being the UK.
  2:44pm
Robert:

And of course, I thought the song was being very bitter, maybe sarcastic, the POV being that of the Irish shortly after the World War, fighting for their independence.
  2:45pm
Robert:

Get it? "Where would your Union be...?"
  2:56pm
ian:

Cold After the Rain...Thanks Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm
Irene Trudel:

@ian, you're quite welcome! Thanks everybody for tuning in today. Catch you next Monday at noon, and Lapland plays live.
  3:00pm
Robert:

Checking it out, I see it's unlikely there would've been Irish fighting at Verdun, but rather at the Somme, an imperfect rhyme.
