A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I once worked at a magazine that had a notice on the wall reminding the men who were working there that they were British and, as such, shorts and flip-flops were BANNED from the office as acceptable summer attire. I sort of agreed...

Good grey morning. I have to admit I am more interested in the handwritten type on this painting than the subject itself. Why wear flip flops to work when there are so many nice sandals out there? My favorite store name here in NYC is SHOEGASM, and yes the sign is in all caps.

Avatar Tue. 4/23/13 10:38am Andrew Waterloo:

@Ike, maybe when I was younger and it was late spring when it's just the mornings that are cooler. I don't understand why people would want to walk around in malls, work, and city streets in flip flops.

I rather wear flip-flops than heels.
Avatar Tue. 4/23/13 10:40am Vivian:

I hate the sound that flip flops make and they're terrible for your feet. I confess, my shoe of choice is either chucks or tevas, depending on the temps.

Hi Trouble, I agree with you about the Rodrigues movie. It has some flaws but I thought it was great. After seeing that movie, many of my friends wanted to see Shuggie Otis live. Unlike Rodrigues, Shuggie live these days is missing a spark. Kind of uninteresting considering the length of time since his II album was first recorded. Shuggie has not continued to evolve and be inspired. I don't blame him, I understand. He's had it rough. But I don't think I would go see Shuggie Otis play live any time soon.

@Adrian talking of Rough Trade. I made it to RT East with the intention of buying John Grant but ended up with Aaron Neville & Fela Kuti's Gentleman.
Does JG's new one pass muster?

Trouble, you're really hitting all the right notes today--not just being eclectic for eclecticity's sake (is that a word?), but having a feel for how beautifully certain records flow together that aren't "supposed" to. It's a true gift you have, and we're all the richer for it. (I'm not even being ironic.)

Here, here, Mark. I've only been listening for about 30 min., but the show I've heard so far has been sublime.

Just Socialize the damned Libraries & PostOffice already! The U.S. has such a pathological paranoia of Socialism - meanwhile the 1/10th of 1% steals our lives away...

Why is Harry Partch's Daphen of the Dunes identified as an Illusion of Safety track? And forgive me if I mistaking the track -- but that's what comes up when I click on the IOS track.
