A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

fred, a jandek gig is one of the most extraordinary things you'll see in your life... only about 40 people turned up when he played sydney two years ago, and they were all speechless at the end of the set. the best thing i've seen in ten years, probably.

Have to say, I have really been loving the month of Lonnie Holley. Nice to have more of it to look forward to every week. Enchantment on the installment plan.

Dr. Holley is in. Good for what ails y'all.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:06am ausmanx:

Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:08am Adrian in London:

Dammit, I lost track of the day and have been listening to the Go-Betweens for hours instead of Trouble. Glad to make in in time for Lonnie, though. I see he now has a European booking agent so hopefully he'll make it to London at some point soon.

Whoops, fergot to sign in before.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:10am fred:

I've already made it known I'd appreciate bringing Lonnie Holley here for another edition of Sonic Protest. My track record says it may even be a negative... I should learn to just shut up
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:10am Rev. Turnip Druid:

No chickpeas here! Tale of woe! Whoa! ... Can't believe this is the first chance I've had to dig the Lonnie all month...
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:11am Cecile:

Adrian, that is so funny. I was going to tell ausmanx that probably seeing Robert and Robert from the Go-Betweens play solo would be like him seeing Jandek.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:12am Cheri Pi:

I Heart Go-Betweens.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:15am ausmanx:

ah funny. i completely detest the Go-Betweens; maybe it's an Australian thing!
  Tue. 4/16/13 10:16am r i s k y:

Beautifulness!
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:17am Cecile:

I liked them when they were lurching toward pop. When they got there, they were a little less interesting. But they've still written some of my favorite songs ever. Spring Hill Fair is pretty spotless, IMO.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:17am Cecile:

Also, I feel the same way about Jandek. Viva l'difference!
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:18am Rev. Turnip Druid:

VIVA THAT GRITTY NITTY!
  Tue. 4/16/13 10:18am common:

he's so good.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:19am Cheri Pi:

lurching towards pop is exactly the right descriptive. Viva Scritti Politti
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:20am fred:

Looks there's something too dumb/great to miss coming my way: the "Sun Ra repatriation project", with a facial composite done by a retired cop, that will be beamed to Saturn as part of the exhibition. No idea what else is planned, but this alone looks promising

Tue. 4/16/13 10:20am Chas in Pcola:

bought this guy Lonny holly's CD last month or so. enjoying it
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:21am Adrian in London:

@ausmanx That's OK. Er, are you an Australian living in the Isle of Man, or the other way round, or neither?! Don;t tell me you hate The Triffids too?
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:21am Cecile:

Actually, I like pop Scritti Polittl, well at least Songs to Remember, better than their other stuff.

Fred, that sounds like the most insane and wonderful event!

Yeah, maybe six more people. hahahaha
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:21am Cecile:

I like a lot of the Triffids songs. They were basically Echo and the Bunnymen if they were doing roots music.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:22am Cecile:

but some of my best friends just loathe them.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:22am Brian in UK:

@ausmanx, no teams Isle of Man man. Just realised Jandek played London two weeks ago.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:25am βrian:

Ezekiel Saw the Wheel. Man, that was a fun song to sing with a full chorale.
  Tue. 4/16/13 10:26am CW:

Wow wow wow. Entrancing, Lonnie!
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:28am fred:

@Cecile: with the toxic air about immigration and self-deportation around here, I think it's mighty smart. Then again, I'm a sucker for all things Sun Ra, so I'm an easy mark
  Tue. 4/16/13 10:28am harveyjohn:

I love me some this...
Intro/ extro spect...
Would love to contemplate but,
got'a appointment to get logos on my Hyundai plated...
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:30am ausmanx:

manx in sydney, adrian. and yes, afraid i'm no Triffids fan either. but i reserve my greatest venom for Nick Cave. i wish members of these bands would stop trawling around the bars cashing in on the work of their deceased leaders too. brian, jandek also sat in and played bass for Mikami Kan the night before his own gig, apparently... i would have LOVED to see that. can you get Lonnie to Sydney, fred?
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:31am still b/p:

Lonnie: "...Talking about how we treat each other."
An evening Post Office run found a bad unexpected notice of no late hours or box collection for tax day. Damn! But a woman customer held the lobby door open and an older gentlemen was cheerfully giving out -- for nothing -- a few postage stickers with a before-deadline postmark. No idea if it'll actually work, but the mood of friendly generosity contrasted nicely and notably with the disturbance and awful sadness of the afternoon. I've dropped into Boston several times in the past (not yesterday) for race day and stood as a spectator at the finish line right at that affected sidewalk spot.
Sorry to hit a note of grimness in this place of welcome diversion, but thought those better karma cultivators were worth mentioning.
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:34am Cecile:

sbp, thank you for that!
  Tue. 4/16/13 10:35am harveyjohn:

BRING IT!
... damn
Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:35am Adrian in London:

@ausmanx I saw The Triffids play with guests such as Stuart Staples, Melanie Oxley and so on at The Barbican a while back and had reservations. What transpired was a gorgeous celebration of "their deceased leader's" collection of songs. And if they can't do that, who can?

Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 10:47am ausmanx:

adrian, well they can and they will, but for me they're just lame flogging of a music which was pretty dependent on the charisma of the original front man. but triffids fans will disagree, and that's great if it works for them. but fred, anything you can do, my friend!!!

Avatar Tue. 4/16/13 11:12am Parq:

Funny thing about Rodriguez -- in the movie, they kept comparing him to Dylan, but in the three or so tracks featured in the move, I couldn't hear it. It wasn't until FMU started playing the rest of the album that I started hearing the similarity.

...@ last we hear some of Lonnie Holley's backstory...
- Occasionally we're reminded that this African-American Music (& all it's Forms) from the Deep South
- that is (simply) the best thing we have in life
- is so strong because it is steel forged in Racism & (ultimately) the advent of Slavery.
- Lonnie Holley reaches these most Human Roots
- whilst simultaneously opening to the expanding metaphysix & technology of our early 21st Century, & still aborning Space Age.
- Extraordinary.
