"Wow, you're strict." <-- That's what she said. :p

Genres are so arguable. (Was just reading a lit book about that.) But the rhythm is more rocky than jazzy, kinda, yes?

Question I posted to Twitter earlier:

DJ signatures on @WFMU’s most-played recent release. Q: Is it David Bowie, Wire, Yo La Tengo, or My Bloody Valentine?

it's just that life's been good and i have lots of friends i could hang out with, dave.
  🎃 Sun. 4/14/13 9:27pm 12539:

I'd guess Yo La Tengo. Also, it's been out longer than the others, hasn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 9:27pm G:

YLT Fade. Has Evan played Wire? (His initials are on that image of the DJ signatures)
  Sun. 4/14/13 9:29pm sweet cheri:

dave that was me at 9:24,(sorry about that)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 9:29pm G:

You could probably match every set of DJ initials up to the playlist date and the matching track numbers from the CD.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 9:30pm Droll:

Sanford & Son Theme is a Qunicy tune!

I'll bet on Bowie w/most plays. Kenzo turned down my request for a copy of the playlist database for my nefarious "Big Data" project to definitively answer questions like this.

- not betting anything...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 9:35pm Dave Mandl:

Any more guesses?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 9:36pm G:

As 12539 mentioned, YLT has been out longer, that also gives them better odds. Bowie only out a few weeks, but getting much play since then
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 9:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...FMU has strong YLT ties - & a broad appeal across DJ's??...

@earrie: Nope, upcoming has no RSS feed. FWIW, it's not exactly RSS-like, since items get added to it not chronologically, but randomly (i.e. the next two items added might be one for July and one for tomorrow), and also get edited a bunch.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Often think Soft Machine not enuff credit for earliest Fusion?? Approaching Fusion from the *Rock* direction - people like Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce (Cream), Hendrix's drummer Mitchell (& Densmore drummer Doors in U.S.) came outta Jazz...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:06pm Dave Mandl:

But SM were big jazz fans. Not sure if they played much jazz when they were younger, but they definitely listened to a lot of it.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:06pm Dave Mandl:

And Matching Mole (Wyatt's spinoff) was also very fusion-y.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tull come in for a lotta abuse - but saw them few years ago @ 60's Fest kinda thing - & didn't seem revival - seemed business as usual for them! Good songs, musicianship, energy - check.
- Haven't actually seen all Zep DVD, but enuff to say what I said...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:09pm Dave Mandl:

I'm not going to talk about Tull here, but if you're interested in drummers look for "Dharma for One" at Isle of Wight. It's on YouTube. Incredible playing by Bunker. He is so underrated today.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:10pm Droll:

LZ is the most important guitar-powered band that's all about the drummer. The close second is The Who.

Kenzo, I am a frequent playlist search user, but you moved the "SELECT WHERE" SQL entry field and I can't find it!

I always assumed the 2% Rock quota applied for large values of 2%.

Yes, I'm in Seattle, +3hr from the mothership. And the show complements dinner, it does not compete. Dinner wins every time.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:11pm Dave Mandl:

I've always thought Moon was kind of overrated. Very good, but not as good as his rep.
  Sun. 4/14/13 11:11pm sweet cheri:

i hope you don't mind me saying that this has been a real fun show,,thnx again dave..
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:12pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Cheri.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:15pm Droll:

DM, It wasn't Moon's chops, he's fall-down sloppy drunk most of the time. His voice on the instrument is so unique, a signature player -- it only takes 1-2 measures before you know it's Bruford, not White, or Moon vs. Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting to actually hear some MacLise than just know he was early Velvets.
...Moon...he was inconsistent but very expressive & out before Baker or any of the others tried anything like that in public in Rock/Pop. Others may have been more solid or technically together - but they're more like diligent Jazz students (very good ones) & Moon more creative (altho' had Jazz antecedents like Krupa or whomever)...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Droll: Whatchu talkin' about?
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:23pm Droll:

Kenzo, The link to download the FMU playlist database isn't working. Should I just screen-scrape? Also, do you know a good way to substitute ö with o? I missed Motorhead by Motörhead on Motörhead. 1033.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:24pm G:

@Droll: The Bruford/White argument has been endemic on Yes discussion lists since the 90s, and even back on alt.music.yes (usenet). There was a working/touring drummer on there who schooled us on some drummers being very distinctive about how to be just microseconds ahead of or behind the instruments, really affecting the feel of the song when done just right, and exactly how they would strike various parts of the kit differently in different situations, etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's not unrelated that the early Who (Moon the youngest) were speeding their gonads off on ModPills, & then Moon became more & more alchoholic...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: True, of course. And he was a good drummer, very fast for the time. But a lot of what he played was impressive mostly to people who don't know about drums.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

Bruford of course was one of the best, and White, and Collins. Being a Tull fan I also loved (and still do) Clive Bunker and Barriemore Barlow. Few drummers could touch Bunker. It's a shame how little credit he gets.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:28pm Dave Mandl:

Bruford was much better in Crimson than Yes.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:29pm Droll:

G, Microseconds are forever in jazz. Swing feel and sloppy feel and tight feel is sub-microseconds at dance tempos. I contend the "difference" between analog and digital recording are those measurable sub-microsecond delays, not the subjective "harsh/brittle" golden-ear crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:29pm G:

Clive was from Luton, up the street from where I lived in England (Harpenden)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:31pm G:

@DM: Ever heard Bunker's solo album? I haven't...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:33pm Dave Mandl:

No. Must be fairly recent. Also, he played with a few bands after Tull.
  🎃 Sun. 4/14/13 11:35pm 12539:

Dave, you, Irwin and EFD should do a three-way Drummer Throwdown special, like the battles Clay Pigeon has been doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:36pm G:

Yep, 90s. Also a live album of him doing Tull songs with a band in Italy in about 2004.

Yes, wiki says Bunker's post-Tull bands were: "Blodwyn Pig, Robin Trower, Jude, Aviator, Jeff Pain (aka Dicken, formerly of the UK band Mr Big), Manfred Mann, Jack Bruce, Gordon Giltrap, Anna Ryder, Uli Jon Roth, Electric Sun, Steve Hillage, Vikki Clayton, Solstice, Glenn Hughes and Jerry Donahue."
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: I'm totally up for it. And I'm sure they would be too. Great idea.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:37pm Droll:

DM, Everything is much better in Crimson than in Yes. Except for notes per minute, a metric by which Yes wins (and ELP beats them both... handily)

12539, Right, make the ringer (Dennis) judge.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

@G: Can't say I've heard every one of those, but I don't think he ever matched his playing in Tull. Seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mitch Mitchell was pretty close to Moon's territory; think the Experience isn't considered enuff as a Band - as it's always about Jimi.
...Agree totally about these other drummers being underrated - but not letting go of the Moon thing that easily...He was too expressive, too innovative (Rock *before him* was Ringo & Charlie Watts - both underrated in their own ways too anyhow) - & too exciting still to hear. He was fatally unwell, & gradually diminshed, which clouds the issue perhaps. Also - he was perfect in the band he was in. If we're gonna open up to Jazz musicianship standards - then Rock is mostly gonna be the snotty no-count punk upstart anyway...well - not Bill Bruford & his sort...
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:39pm Dave Mandl:

I don't disagree about Moon. His playing on "My Generation" was completely new in the rock world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:40pm G:

@Dave: I'm sure you know this, but I just looked it up. He quit Tull because he got married just as they were starting on a huge world tour, just as he'd told them all along would happen if he got married.
Avatar Sun. 4/14/13 11:41pm Droll:

G, He wanted to spend more time with his family? That excuse doesn't work with businessmen or politicians and it's certainly not going to work with rock musicians.

@Droll: It's working fine. It just happens to be empty today. Data lines, odd and even days, depending on the last digit of your cookie.

It was his call, Droll, and there goes history! Like Gabriel leaving Genesis in significant measure because of his wife's childbirth issues...

Yeah, supposedly because he got married, but Tull was going in a very different direction and I don't think he was into it. Also, Ian Anderson was kind of a tyrant and kicked all the original members out of the band one by one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:51pm G:

The other members of Yes called Anderson "Napoleon" behind his back. OK, not always behind his back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 4/14/13 11:52pm G:

...& yet bandleader skills, frontman egos, & drill sergeants are all part of the Spinal Tap chemistry of it all too. Where would stoned art student Townshend be w/out Daltrey's fists - Joey & DeeDee w/out Johnny's bully army background - ?...
