Hola, not Hole. Please...no Hole.

This is a fine remix of See You When I Git There but I miss Lou's timeless spoken-word intro: "Pardon me, do you have change for a quarter? I gotta make a phone call."

Oh thank goodness. Thought you were playing Grouper & my head almost exploded! Yay for no exploding heads tonight.

Thank you Garfield for making me a Lou Rawls fan when I was a wee little one.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:10pm efd:

hey everyone! Settling in to ye olde boxcar studio, nice to have you along.

Holly, I ate some grouper the other day - does that count?
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:11pm Holly in NC:

Grouper the fish is super delicious, all over that ;-)
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:11pm efd:

@Uncle Michael, I have an answer to your query from a couple of weeks ago, direct from the man himself: John Carter DID sing the lead vocal on the "Winchester Cathedral"-style Coke commercials.

Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:15pm Uncle Michael:

I keep trying to get behind the Moulton remixes but I just prefer the originals. The Philly Int'l 40th Anniversary box set is all I need.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:15pm efd:

@Rev TD, "Box scarred" is a great way of describing every WFMU DJ for the next four weeks.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:16pm Uncle Michael:

"bock scarred" is a beer reference
  Wed. 2/20/13 9:17pm Marmalade Kitty:

Steve, your avatar reminds me of Salem the magical talking cat :)
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:18pm Rev. Turnip Druid (xBSI):

Box Car: It's the wee slender studio that looks into the live-music room, yes? I was privileged enough to do a set in there for Scott W a year-plus ago. I can see how Marathon Time in there would drive DJs insane.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:18pm Rev. Turnip Druid (xBSI):

.... Anyway, I hope to do some good financial damage for FMU this year...

Greetings from Melbourne, all. Evan, I'm hoping you'll talk about the "Roadrunner"-as-MA-state-rock-song proposal tonight ... and maybe play some Modern Lovers?

Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:22pm Uncle Michael:

Ok, I have a Rockpile question...
  Wed. 2/20/13 9:22pm pete:

Whoa- Billy Gibbons & Co. covering the Wildweeds? Nice!
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:23pm Holly in NC:

@UncleMiichael - while *I* think Hole has some great songs, I also think the likelihood of efd playing Hole is about same as him playing Grouper, so we're both safe ;-)
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:23pm steve:

Uncle Michael - ive been looking for an alternate (slightly slower and sloppier) version of Roadrunner that was in a 1990s skateboard video forever, and have never been able to find it.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:23pm efd:

ha, good one G! Maybe that was subconscious on my part.

Eddy, unfortunately being in the upstairs studio limits my ability to be spontaneous and I don't have any Modern Lovers up here with me. Maybe next week!
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:23pm Uncle Michael:

Yesterday I was watching this old brit tv episode that was a look in on Rockpile at Eden studio during the recording of Repeat When Necessary and Labour of Lust...

And at one point, Edmunds is laying down a vocal for *his* version of Nick's "Endless Gray Ribbon," which Nick would eventually record himself for Labour...

Roadrunner Pedantry Watch: The single and album versions of Roadrunner were recorded a couple years apart. And there were two more recorded in between with Kim Fowley (excuse my french) that came out several years later. All sound a bit (or a lot) different, different lengths, instruments, etc. And those were just the four versions that were done before the first album. For that alone, it should be the state song.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:34pm G:

@Matt: Even back in Latin (where Spanish etc. come from) "day" and "night" were a different gender (respectively, male and female) than you'd think by looking at their endings. C'est la vie!

@John - As an ex (& forever) Massachusettsian (??!!), I completely agree Roadrunner NEEDS to be state song.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 9:38pm Uncle Michael:

Roadrunner is a pretty good litmus test. When it comes on and you bounce around the room...some people get it...and some people don't.

Dollar were quite popular in the UK in the earliest part of the '80s. I didn't remember they were as good as that single. As for Roadrunner, nobody beats the original(s), but if I needed a cover, it'd be the Jazz Butcher by a mile.

I hear a little Hawkwind in this too.

...and yes, I finally saw Apache Dropout. Came through Fort Wayne last week. I like 'em!

"Of the various rock and metal bands out there today that strive to take us on a DeLorean ride back to the time of handle-bar mustaches and full-on bush, Hot Lunch and their self-titled debut album are certainly some of the most authentic that I’ve come across. The record’s 10 tracks are alive with the vibes and tones of rock-n-roll’s pinnacle. From high-energy, driving rockabilly to progy, stoner grooves, these guys put out an album that will make a great birthday gift for you or your dad.

Feel that organ!

Hot Lunch are a trio +a singer. So, not really a trio. :)

Yes to Pinnacle! Gotta get home (2 minute drive, LOVE new most excellent coffee tea shop) back in a few..
Wed. 2/20/13 10:19pm eddy in australia:

@John: Scary! Actually, a lot of the "New Melbourne Jangle" bands (not my tag, I promise) are influenced by the GoBs - they're the gift that keeps on giving.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 10:19pm Stevel:

Man. Pinnacle. How did I never listen to them in someone's basement? Its in punk crossover territory.
  Wed. 2/20/13 10:20pm RevolutionRabbitNov63:

Hawkwind - yeah - Lemmy, Motorhead
...Speed Metal started earlier than I thot, I think

How did I never do bong hits to this in 1974?

+ to the title "Quasar Queen"! + to the double Qs!

I'm still not buying Hammered Satin's T-Rex regurge. Liked The Darkness for recycled glam better.

Quasar Queen is the new anthem!

  Wed. 2/20/13 10:23pm john:

Yeah, Eddy, that name is a little unwieldy, but if you're picking influences you could certainly do a whole lot worse. Personally, not sure you could do a whole lot better!
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 10:23pm Stevel:

How, specifically, does a quasar queen come at a person?

@Stevel, I know the station got the reissue of the Quick LP that came out a few years ago, I don't think I have anything of theirs personally.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 10:48pm Holly in NC:

efd, you'll laugh - i have a deal w my housemate that he's not allowed not to use our crappy non-cable internet connection wed 9-12 pm (my year round b-day/xmas present to him is netflix , which takes *all* the bandwidth) anyway, he's across town & called me to make sure I could access your show ;-) heh.

2. ?
3. Big Profits

that sounds like a money-making plan straight out of The Honeymooners :)

Did that have Sonic Youth people in it - or just sound like it - ?
- I like.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:13pm G:

@MK: try this:

wfmu.org...

that's the current schedule

just change the 30 first to 29 (hit enter), then 28 (hit enter), then 27 (hot enter), etc., and you can scroll back through schedules for prior years...
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@Kitty: The easiest way, going back to 2001, is the Internet Archive caches of the schedule page:
web.archive.org...*/www.wfmu.org...

The homepage itself goes back to 1996, you can click on links within that to find out what the schedule used to be.
  Wed. 2/20/13 11:14pm Marmalade Kitty:

thanks G
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:14pm G:

also, MK, comment timestamps on shows will tell you what time it was live, but that only helps as far back as comments go...
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:15pm Danne D:

@marmalade got some good tips there :)

I'm back now as I finished the liner notes for my prize CD :)
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, cool trick G!
Wed. 2/20/13 11:15pm eddy in australia:

@Steve: I'm in Melbourne, too. 1-4pm is reasonable but it's a little weird listening to the Funk when it's nearly 90F outside (I just relocated from NY).
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Danne of the Liner Note(s)!

@G, not so much - in his fever dreams he wants someone to well, apply suction to something below waist level - so instead I gave him a huge shot of Jameson's. Will check his breathing shortly.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:55pm Uncle Michael:

I suggest you start recording and compiling living tributes. "Hi, we're Hot Lunch and whenever we're on the Internet, we listen to wfmu.org!" That sort of thing.
Avatar Wed. 2/20/13 11:56pm efd:

@Uncle Michael I have to say, with utmost respect, that was one reason I was so pleased to be able to do that John Carter interview.
