Definitely not "guano" -- welcome back for today, Bethany...

Hi Bethany!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Yay Bethany!
Slavic Surf rock by way of Polovetsia! Great start!
  Wed. 1/23/13 3:05pm rrg:

Hello, Ms. Bethany. I'm here for the "music from 1964" that you promised...
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Will today be an "A440" or a "Stochastic Hit Parade"? Or something in between?
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:07pm fred:

Good afternoon Bethany. It's always a pleasure to hear your show
  Wed. 1/23/13 3:07pm rrg:

Hey, tell me where those little thumbnail images on the comments are coming from.

I don't have one.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey G, 12539 (Bethany's adopter!), and rrg!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:08pm Cecile:

@rrg: Need to register or sign in to the WFMU Friendship Society at the top of any page. Then you can upload your pics (and even GIF animations).
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:08pm fred:

@rrg: You need to create a profile (there's a "register" link on the top of the page) and upload a picture as an avatar
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:08pm slugluv1313:

hi Bethany! always love hearing you on WFMU!

Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:11pm Mike East:

I get a Mike Patton vibe from this. I dig it.
  Wed. 1/23/13 3:12pm rrg:

@fred: Thanks. I guess I never noticed or bothered. Irwin's playlist doesn't display any avatars.

If I register, does that mean I get to also "reserve" the handle that I use when posting?
Avatar Wed. 1/23/13 3:13pm other david:

Yay, A440 - always a treat! Nice to hear you back, Bethany :)

*pulls seat up to the bar*
  Wed. 1/23/13 3:13pm rrg:

Oh, and thanks G and Matt as well (don't mean to slight anyone...).
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:14pm Mike East:

yes, rrg - and you don't have to do any math

Hi OD! First Guinness is on me!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:15pm Ike:

Hello! @rrg, the Friendship Society just started, so Irwin's next playlist will have avatars.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:17pm G:

@rrg: Yeah, the system was made live during Dark Night of the Soul last Weds, about 12 hours after Irwin's most recent show...
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:17pm ranjit:

Party like it's 1964!
Avatar Wed. 1/23/13 3:18pm other david:

@Matt: this cannot end well!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:18pm rrg:

No math! Why did no one ever tell me this?

Oh, because it just started (thanks, Ike).

I'm in, so I'm the one-and-only rrg. Though I don't know whether forging remains an option for evildoers.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:18pm Mike East:

is this Nicola Conte someone's bed music? or is it used on some WNYC promo spot? where have I heard this?
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:20pm rrg:

He's not a slacker but he's often LATE.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:23pm rrg:

This is tied into Facebook and everything. Shall I ignore that or embrace it? So much to decide while listening to music from 1964.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:23pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: It's a special occasion with Bethany here. Besides, as long as one only mixes musics with beer, we should be fine. Cheers! *clink*
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:23pm Mike East:

i'm going with WNYC promo. I'm almost certain of it.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:23pm fakerrg:

Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:23pm Sem Chumbo:

Nice work, Bethany: you drew a crowd but it is not pesky at all. Pretty good spectacle and clamour, too.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike East: I definitely have heard it somewhere before--I s'pose it gets around.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:25pm fred:

@Matt from Springfield: I'm actually drinking a Guinness at this very moment
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:25pm G:

@rrg: The only way for someone to get your name and be logged in is to guess/find your password.

When not logged in, someone could name themselves "rrg", but because they are not logged in users can see it's not you.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:25pm rrg:

With authenticated postings it would now be easy for Kenzo (or whoever's doing this) to implement the ability to delete or edit one's own comments. Correct one's own typos. Without having to bother the DJ.

So there's an up side to it all.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:27pm Ike:

Irwin disappears at the same time as NYC getting its first "hot country" station in 17 years? This CANNOT be a coincidence!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:28pm rrg:

Is there any way to tell that a commenter is logged in apart from the presence of an avatar in the comment?
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:29pm G:

Let's see. Hot Country today, last week Christian. 60 stations in the NYC area.

OK, I'll manage to live :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:29pm G:

This is a test. I'm not really G, I'm really rrg pretending to be G. Exploring the limits of the WFMU Friendship Society limitation.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:29pm Droll:

RRG, Good question, we lurkers would love to know.

@rrg: your post as G linked to your rrg profile. voila, transparency :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:33pm Ike:

@Other David, touché. But I'm sure the lizard men from Alpha Centauri are in on this somehow! They are secretly running that radio station, I just know it!
Avatar Wed. 1/23/13 3:33pm other david:

Howdy Sean - Matt's paid for the first round of Guinness :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:34pm rrg:

All right, so I can pretend to be someone else (hi, G) but the linked name still goes to my profile. So, a modicum of accountability.

But I would have implemented this so that you can't use the name of another registered user. You still want to allow funny handles, but you want to prevent superficial forgery.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:36pm G:

@rrg: No one even needs to hit the link to your profile to see which profile posted a comment. Anyone can just mouse over the pseudonym to see which profile actually generated the comment.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:36pm danjoseph:

Greetings from south slope, great to hear you on the air again Bethany!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:37pm fred:

@rrg: I think that kind of forgery could get you banned, and the registration process requires a real email. Much harder than the old way
Avatar Wed. 1/23/13 3:37pm Bethany Ryker:

...yeah...you guys just talk amongst yourselves ;)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@Bethany: All right! I'm Stoched! 440x over!
Hey Sean! Only the first round, though :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:38pm Andrew Waterloo:

awesome set Bethany.. lots of yellow stars
Avatar Wed. 1/23/13 3:38pm other david:

@Ike: this fascination of yours with lizard men from Alpha Centauri is unhealthy and unrealistic - there are billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars - so what about THEIR lizard men, huh? Stop pinning everything on Alpha Centauri lizards, my brother in law is one & he doesn't even like hot country music.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:38pm G:

Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:42pm rrg:

Hey, Bethany, "Have I the Right?" by the Honeycombs is a song from 1964.

I'm just sayin'.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Is that a philosophy question? That's a good one, on form and function.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:43pm G:

Irwin doing Bethany. What a kidder!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:43pm G:

@Matt: *Every* question is a philosophy question, if you avoid taking it superficially. :)
  Wed. 1/23/13 3:43pm Janitor:

I'm the real winner of any ale fight--the mops and bucket are MINE! :)

To save money, let's ale fight from glasses already purchased--that oughta go well.

Bethany, If it's cold outside I typically leave my apartment, go down the stairs to the building exit, realize I forgot something, go back upstairs, and repeat that 2-3 times until I have everything. Plenty warm after that regime.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:49pm rrg:

Oh! I know this because Irwin played it a while ago.
Avatar Wed. 1/23/13 3:49pm other david:

@Bethany: when people favourite a song on your show - does it pop up/alert you, the DJ, in any way? I sort of hope not, lest it influence show direction and whatnot.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:50pm Carmichael:

Hi everyone. And Hello Bethany!
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:51pm rrg:

You can "favorite" a song? Wow, you can.

This is too much to process in such a short time.

But I have no idea what to use for an avatar.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:55pm rrg:

Not a judgement, other david. Merely an observation.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Virtually every other Anglo outside the U.S. spells it that way -- you're more the telltale by noticing :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:55pm rrg:

Or should I have written "judgment"?
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:55pm G:

Rob one off the interwebs, rrg. Get several for when you get bored with the first one. I yoinked my current one off google street view and cropped it.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 3:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Now Re: your avatar, rrg: isn't your name "Ron"? You could allude to that with a Ron Burgundy or Ron Swanson pic. The possibilities are infinite! (And frequent, as G points out).

I mean, as long as you're playing music from 1964.

@G - probably no different then as it is now, except there were no cars back then
  Wed. 1/23/13 4:02pm Laura L:

On deadlines here, but how can I let go rrg's question about "judgment"--yes, no "e" after the "g" in the good old USA (as opposed to the good older UK). Hi Bethany--excellent show--thank you!

Oh yeah, Moreton End Lane *totally* looked the same from Luton Road in the 70s. -- By contrast, in Brasil the place I lived in the later 70s is completely and utterly changed (the lot across the street was vacant then; I was out in the boonies past the car racing track at the outer edge of Sao Paulo)
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 4:05pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Nice street photo--makes me want to look at it to the tune of "Thick As A Brick".

@ rrg, I have to delete it from "judgement" and "acknowledgement" in manuscripts all the time--it's a US vs. UK thing.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 4:09pm rrg:

Bethany, it's a fine show. Also, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" by Manfred Mann is another song from 1964.

Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 4:10pm G:

re "Thick As A Brick": And I first heard that CD, oops I mean album, when I lived on that street. In fact, there was a very British-ethos Catholic boys school up the street where my younger brothers somewhat unhappily went. (I was old enough to be trusted to commute by train daily to the American School in London.)

But mainly in 72-74 I was buying small-run 45s that were on the American charts and barely released in the UK. The record store thought I was a preciously young DJ, but I was just keeping up with music by special ordering stuff off of the US charts that was not on the UK charts or radio at all...
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 4:11pm rrg:

Right, "acknowledgement/acknowledgment" is another one of those.

I confess that I prefer the shorter forms that we use here in the good old USA.
Avatar    Wed. 1/23/13 4:11pm Matt from Springfield:

There are "organised" "realisations" and other such S's instead of Z's in British/Commonwealth spelling, yet they still tend to put a Z in Elizabeth and Brazil.

Elisabeth and Brasil is a further preference, indicating a Continental Europe/outside Anglosphere perspective.

I confess that I don't really mind, either way. Although US media etc. seem to take it to extremes nowadays: why express a concept or historical event by using a few words, when you can reduce it to an 3 letter acronym...

This has truly been wild for me. I am a long time listener. Incidently I have an old FBI file gained by my march-planning work with Martin Luther King in Chicago. @MfS: America broke on BBC radio (prior to US success) a few months after I moved there. All of us at ASL knew of them. They were actually military brats and had gone to a different US-curriculum school. But yeah we had plenty of fairly well-known actors'/actresses' kids at ASL. Wow, the day Linda Blair visited the school was a big day for the drama kids at ASL... And Elton John played the gym twice when he was gearing up to conquer the US as a rock act (rather than his previous milder approach)...
