Hola to you, Carmichael!
Tue. 5/15/12 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

aha, rich = ricardo! i don't think i knew you were one and the same. i am notoriously slow on the uptake. bring on the moldy old rekkids!
Tue. 5/15/12 12:02pm Brian in UK:

Afternoon Rich & gents.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:02pm texas scott:

hey Rich.
glad to see you here!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:03pm ricardo montalban:

Hey, Texas Scott, Brian! Good afternoon to you, sirs!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:05pm ricardo montalban:

I'm commenting here as Ricardo, an amusing puppet painted on my fist, but DJing as Rich.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:06pm Brass Knuckles:

pic of puppet, please.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:07pm duke:

She sounds very excited by the Sears #9235.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:07pm Brass Knuckles:

stupid woman. let me hold your hand through this explanation.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:08pm ricardo montalban:

I love this woman's voice for some reason. I wonder if she was a prominent voice actress. She sounds so early 70s.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:08pm MrFab:

So, Ricardo Montalban will NOT be dj-ing today? Ah darn, was hoping for some rich Corinthian vinyl!

Hey, Rich! *waves* looking forward to you killing ugly radio this morn.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:09pm ricardo montalban:

Hey! It's Mr. Fab!! It's rich corinthian vinyl today, much of it found in hillbilly thriftstores througout the NW
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:10pm ricardo montalban:

Here's the best sample from that Sears demo: goo.gl...
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:11pm duke:

It would have been better if the record he put on was the one we were already listening to. The Sears #9235 recursive stereo system.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:11pm listener james from westwood:

  Tue. 5/15/12 12:12pm Carmichael:

I now know how to operate my hi-fidelity stereo home entertainment system!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:13pm ricardo montalban:

I found a pile of radio spots and demo packages in a coastal junk store. I can only assume some programming director kicked the proverbial bucket.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:13pm texas scott:

give simulated woodgrain our regards
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:14pm ricardo montalban:

I once DJ'd as DJ Simulated Woodgrain Veneer
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:15pm duke:

Marlin is going to inject Jack with distemper and then give him the vaccine tonight on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:15pm texas scott:

that's dangerous!
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:15pm Doug S.:

Fine Corinthian leather radio!
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:16pm Carmichael:

"While Jim Fowler wrestles the deadly anaconda, I'll return to the studio for more film."
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:16pm ricardo montalban:

Mr. Fab is in the house. You should check out his amazing blog Music For Maniacs: musicformaniacs.blogspot.com
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:17pm ricardo montalban:

I like how Marlin says Rep-tulls.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:19pm ricardo montalban:

here's a brief sample of Marlin for any DJs out there: goo.gl...
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:20pm ricardo montalban:

I was disappointed that marlin doesn't try to approximate the chattering sound himself
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:21pm MrFab:

Why thank you, sir! I hope everyone here knows about Ricardo's legendary KBOO podcast/programs like "Kill Ugly Radio." Unmissable. (is that a word?)
Tue. 5/15/12 12:21pm Brian in UK:

Do not monkey with me, Marlin.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:22pm Arthur P.:

Wait, you mean we're not going to hear about the vaccine?!?
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:22pm ricardo montalban:

Aw, shucks, thanks Senor Fab!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:23pm ricardo montalban:

Arthur P: the flip was actually quite dull.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:24pm Brian in UK:

Rich. Dull, explain this concept. If it's like any vet I know it will cost just to listen.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:24pm listener james from westwood:

harvesting the vaccine from the snow leopards must have made for some fairly distempered felines.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:24pm Carmichael:

Don, you RAWK!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:25pm ricardo montalban:

yeah, I think he was a Magnavox organ salesman, demo guy here in Portland.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:28pm Carmichael:

Debbie's no slouch, either.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:30pm ricardo montalban:

She was apparently a whiz on some Yamaha keyboard, had something to do with the development or something.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:30pm BSI:

I recommend avoiding whiz on yamaha keyboard.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:32pm ricardo montalban:

I attended a Noise show where someone whizzed on a keyboard, but I don't know what make or model it was.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:35pm duke:

Theme From The Exorcist. Nothing inspires pizza purchase like demonic possession.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:36pm Carmichael:

Today's show description in a word: snappy!!
Tue. 5/15/12 12:36pm listener james from westwood:

please tell me lenny carr is depicted wearing a wine-colored tux with lapels wide enough to be visible from space.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:36pm listener james from westwood:

lol@ bsi!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:37pm ricardo montalban:

Carmichael: Thank you!
James: YES! How did you know?
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:39pm ricardo montalban:

His rendition of Go Away Little Girl is really creepy, too.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

it's funny; i read an article a few years back about how clothing warehouses, vintage shops, etc. in vegas were seeing massive interest in those sorts of mid/late-70s cuts and colors of men's formal wear. like there was a run on that era. weird how things come back around again.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:40pm northguineahills:

Digging the recs....
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:40pm ndbob:

hello everyone!
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:41pm ndbob:

Hi Rich!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:41pm ricardo montalban:

Thanks northguineahills!
Tue. 5/15/12 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

g'day ndbob & northguineahills!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:41pm ricardo montalban:

Hi ndbob!
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:44pm Carmichael:

A legendary Sacramento pizza parlor was called Pizza 'n' Pipes. A guy sat up in an opera-style box and boogied on the pipe organ, with the various mechanical sound effects on the walls chiming in like magic. The pepperoni tasted so much better.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:46pm ricardo montalban:

Ugh. Bit rusty with my home DJ setup.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:46pm northguineahills:

Hello everyone. Been a little mum today, as caffeine seems to be ineffective. Time to go w/ maté
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:47pm Carmichael:

Speaking of creepy. These guys should be called the Rock Destroyers.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:48pm ricardo montalban:

Carmichael: We had a place in Vancouver WA (just across the river from Portland OR) called Uncle Milt's with a giant Wurlitzer and they'd play silent movies.
A guy would come out in a moth-eaten Pink Panther costume.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:49pm ☺☺☺☺:

I'm trapped in my basement and it's 1976.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:49pm northguineahills:

I have to see the Idlers rec cover.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:50pm northguineahills:

I probably have a half dozen Wurlitzer LPs of various prominence, but these have been awesome.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:50pm ricardo montalban:

The cover is painted in a Coast Guard scheme, red stripe. Just like a ship
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:51pm ricardo montalban:

Thanks, northguineahills!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:53pm ricardo montalban:

Royal Master Recordings is bottom of the barrel in my book. They only have two singers, this guy and a woman and they recycle backing music on different songs.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:53pm duke:

Is this the answer song to Where's the Beef?
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:53pm northguineahills:

I was curious as I have a friend who is a Cpt in the Coast Guard, and he would get a guffaw out of it.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:55pm ricardo montalban:

duke: yes! I think you're onto something!
Tue. 5/15/12 12:56pm Brian in UK:

Branding Iron Records. Christ.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:56pm Andy S.:

This show certainly has been a unique listening experience -- one that I hope never to repeat in my lifetime!
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:56pm northguineahills:

I'm more familiar w/ answer songs in the dancehall genre, but this works well too.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:56pm ricardo montalban:

Achtung: We're heading into wobbly Christian music territory
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 12:58pm ricardo montalban:

This guy reminds me of Calvin from The Beat Happening/K Records. Trippy cover art, too.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:58pm Brian in UK:

Is there unwobbly Christian music? Christ.
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:59pm Andy S.:

Enough of talentless white people singing about their mythical god!
  Tue. 5/15/12 12:59pm northguineahills:

Yeah, this is bringing up awkward memories of my childhood. Bad Christian folk guitars. I prefer Jesus hippie rock.
Tue. 5/15/12 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Hymns notwithstanding.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:01pm ricardo montalban:

you just never know. Sometimes the cover is so great: big lacquered hairdoos and weird clothes, but the music can be so dull. I have tons of trippy Xtian covers with sometimes great music.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:01pm Andy S.:

This track ("Just Believe") feels as long as "Stairway to Heaven." And at this point, I'd rather be listening to "Stairway to Heaven."
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:02pm northguineahills:

Please eliminate it!
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:02pm duke:

Now THIS is truly weird.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:03pm northguineahills:

This is Kenny G territory.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:04pm Brass Knuckles:

This track is killing it.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:04pm Brian in UK:

Is this the Paxton from Skip & Flip
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:06pm Brass Knuckles:

Why is this man squeezing his nostrils as he speaks?
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:06pm ricardo montalban:

I am sure that this record was mastered at the wrong pitch. I thought it was just this segment, but later, when Pat speaks, he too sounds speeded up.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:06pm Brian in UK:

Thought I recognised the name.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:07pm ☺☺☺☺:

Kenny G or David Lynch.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:07pm ricardo montalban:

Here's the whole segment with the pitch/speed corrected (by my ears anyway): goo.gl...
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:07pm ndbob:

yep - Gary Paxton has had quite a varied career to say the least
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:08pm duke:

@Brian Gary looks like those two women on the WFMU front page
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:08pm ricardo montalban:

yeah, Paxton was big producer dude. I think he also supposedly had an affair with Tammy Faye Baker.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:11pm MrFab:

I learned long ago that you'll learn more about America spending time in thrift stores than in any history class.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:12pm Brian in UK:

Makes the Monster Mash seem tame.
Nice one, Duke!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:14pm ricardo montalban:

yes, Fab. My wife and I have noticed tons more people at thrift stores lately.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:15pm Carmichael:

Janet Baez? Ode to Termites?
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:16pm northguineahills:

I was thinking WFMU's Kenny G.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:17pm ricardo montalban:

She was the right wing's attempt at making an Anti-Baez
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:18pm ricardo montalban:

Is it me, or does this sound like really early GG Allin, like GG and the Jabbers?
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:23pm ricardo montalban:

This is all little kids playing Marimba. On the back cover, they all have sombreros on.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:24pm ricardo montalban:

The distortion is in the recording. Pretty badly done from the sound of it.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:26pm MrFab:

Well, marimbas are a pretty 'buzzy' intrument. One of the things I like about 'em.
This is beautful.
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:26pm ndbob:

Quite a set here... I've heard that Janet Greene LP.. and it's hard to escape finding Merrill Womach Lp's at thrift stores:)
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:29pm ndbob:

Gary Paxton was also in the Hollywood Argyles, and was involved in lots of interesting records - there's a good CD of Gary Paxton material
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:36pm ricardo montalban:

yeah, he's got quite a legacy. Lots of odious religious records, too. I'll bet Kim Fowley has some interesting stories about him.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:37pm gratefulblac from Manchester (red side) uk:

Hi there Rich
Sounds like you enjoy your James Last lps
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:38pm ndbob:

Yep.. and I'd bet Gary has some interesting stories about Kim Fowley
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:38pm ricardo montalban:

Hey there, gratefulblac! Yes, that I do. That Paxton 7" would fit right in with Last's Giant Man song, wouldn't it?
Tue. 5/15/12 1:40pm gratefulblac from Manchester (red side) uk:

yes, always had a soft spot for his Beatles lp - Eleanor Rigby especially
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:41pm ricardo montalban:

have you seen the youtube clip of his band doing Hawkwinds Silver machine?
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:41pm Carmichael:

Here's a Wurlitzer link for y'all: http://www.theatreorgans.com/ca/tossd/tossd/organ.htm
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:42pm ricardo montalban:

The local (to Portland Or) references in this record are astounding, perhaps perplexing for those who didn't live here in the 80s.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:43pm gratefulblac from Manchester (red side) uk:

no way! sounds like that scene of a rock festival in Carry On Camping!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:43pm ricardo montalban:

references to Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh (Osho) and the cult showdown.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:44pm gratefulblac from Manchester (red side) uk:

do you mean carry on up the Khazi!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:46pm ricardo montalban:

Ironically, it's sunny and nearly 80 here today.
Tue. 5/15/12 1:48pm Brian in UK:

Sanyasins to the right. Was it orange as the favourite colour?
  Tue. 5/15/12 1:50pm ndbob:

I'm pretty sure I had this record.. found at the Tacoma 45 show
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:50pm ricardo montalban:

yes. Red, actually. My cousin was actually in the cult for a spell.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:51pm ricardo montalban:

yeah, that Harry Truman LP is pretty unavoidable is you live in the area. Maybe beyond.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:55pm ricardo montalban:

This LP too. I remember seeing several boxes of sealed LPs in a Christian thrift store when I was a teenager.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 1:58pm ricardo montalban:

The flipside to this John and Don Lampien record is great, but maybe too stupid for this show goo.gl...
(not that that's been stopping me so far)
  Tue. 5/15/12 2:11pm ndbob:

I need to go.. excellent show Rich.. I'll catch the rest on the archive
Tue. 5/15/12 2:12pm listener james from westwood:

was in the other room for a minute, and thought the soundtrack to "apocalypse now" had come on. now i hear it, far less ominous.
see ya later ndbob!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:12pm ricardo montalban:

See you, ndbob! Thanks for listening!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:14pm ricardo montalban:

This Ernest Hood lp is pretty peculiar in a sentimental way. Not technically a thrift store record as the artist's son gave me a sealed copy, but it's local.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:15pm ricardo montalban:

Ernie played on Flora Purim's Butterfly Dreams and Tales to Tell.
Tue. 5/15/12 2:24pm listener james from westwood:

found sound! yes!

- thought it was hurdy gurdy man - did Steve Hillage and butthole surfers ever do versions?
eh red as opposed to blue - soccer fan reference rather indian cultism!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:45pm ricardo montalban:

The BHS did. I'm not sure about Hillage, though.

The Bonzos doing "Give Booze a Chance" was a deep favorite. All that drunken slurring is classic...

  Tue. 5/15/12 2:51pm BSI:

Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:51pm ricardo montalban:

Nice one, BSI!
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:51pm ricardo montalban:

Tartaglia does the strings on this Richard Christensen album, as well.

BSI - think it was soon after Hairway to Steven lp - a career highpoint never again reached!
  Tue. 5/15/12 2:54pm BSI:

True enough, GfM(rs)uk: Hairway could never be topped.
Avatar Tue. 5/15/12 2:55pm ricardo montalban:

I agree. Sometime after bailing on Alternative Tentacles and into their T/G era, they lost something. Too many drugs? Not enough of the right drugs?

Thanks for a weird experience.
