Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from April 3, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Twerps  Live in the WFMU studio   Favoriting Engineered by Ernie Indradat    Forming late 2008 around charismatic guitarist/vocalist Marty Frawley (son of Paul Kelly & the Dots member Maurice Frawley) and bassist Rick Milovanovic, Twerps have quickly risen to become one of Melbourne’s favourite pop bands. They’ve scored support slots for the likes of Deerhunter, the Bats, Yo La Tengo, Black Lips, Thee Oh Sees and Robert Forster. They play their own brand of warm and incredibly infectious pop, with elements of the 80s Flying Nun sound and 90s lo-fi. Marty’s cheeky but heartfelt songs are complemented by the crystalline guitar lines of guitarist Julia MacFarlane (ex Batrider). Lineup today includes Dion Nania on bass, Patrick O'Neill on drums. Thanks to Chapter and Underwater Peoples for hanging too. More info here    1:00:10 (Pop-up)

feedtime  Live in the WFMU studio   Favoriting Engineered by Juan Aboites    Solid peers of other down-and-scuzzy Oz combos like Thug, King Snake Roost, Bloodloss and Grong Grong, Sydney's legendary feedtime ripped through the 1980's and certainly gave raw power to the seeds of Seattle (in fact Butch Vig produced the band's last LP way before Nirvana used him). While feedtime made some headway in the USA thanks to Rough Trade distribution, they disappeared seemingly right as their sound sprouted its heirs, and they even resurfaced for a short bit in the mid '90's. Fast forward to their next return in 2012: Sub Pop has issued a 4 disc box of the band's output called the Aberrant Years, S-S Records has a collection of unreleased tracks (Today Is Friday) and feedtime tour the USA and hit Brian's show today! They slaughtered all in their wake last week in the NYC area on March 29th at Death By Audio, March 31st at the Cake Shop, and April 1st at Maxwells. feedtime = Allen, Rick, Tom. Some vocal assist from Carmel. First NYC shows! First radio session! More info at the Sub Pop page. S-S Records page. Cecile:

  3:23pm
Cecile:

Play some more X.
  3:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sadly I will be leaving early today as well (to catch another show--the Moody Blues), but I so want to hear this Archive!

@paula: I enjoy Aus/NZ rock immensely as well--a downright Antipodean Day today.
  3:25pm
Cecile:

  3:26pm
tim from champaign:

Aussie-A-Mania has been running wild in Illinois too. Electric Jellyfish were in Champaign and Chicago last week as well as feedtime in Chicago. I heard the feedtime show in Cicago was pretty ripping.

  3:36pm
Jack Detroit:

  3:37pm

  3:41pm
Jack Detroit:

@Matt, yeah, my local in Detroit can get it. I'm from Sydney so it brings back memories!
  3:41pm
Cecile:

yes, that's right.
But surely there's interest for another tour before 20 more years passes.
  3:42pm
Cheri Pi:

I will sign a petition to that effect, we want you nationwide feedtime, I know you're reading this.
  3:44pm
Jack Detroit:

If the chickens join in, some eggs may be laid.
  3:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jack 3:41: Bottoms up, mate!

  4:30pm
Cheri Pi:

I've been thinking about 12 strings recently too Braveness23.
  4:31pm
Braveness23:

I still haven't heard you rock out on your les paul. What's up with that?
  4:32pm
Cheri Pi:

Braveness23:

  4:40pm
Mike East:

someone came in yesterday to rent a 6 string acoustic. All we had available was a 12 string. He came back today wanting a refund because he restrung it with only 6 strings and "it didn't sound right." I gave him 20 bucks to get out of my office.
  4:43pm
Cecile:

YES.
I have the Primitive Calculators album. Pure hate on vinyl.
  4:45pm
Cheri Pi:

Oh snap I just listened to this comp recently! I love the Oz music. Cecile, did you ever get your copy of Krypton 10 (I think that's what it is)
  4:46pm
Cecile:

I did. Haven't played it yet. Still waiting on that loaned turntable (taps foot)

kat330:

@Mike: Agreed, a great Whiskey.

  5:15pm
glenn:

i'm a big fan of danelectro, especially their cheap and cheerful pedals.
  5:15pm
Mike East:

no, we've got those, too. The Danelectro is a bit different - doesn't have the resonator strings, and the shape is more of a teardrop.

Mike East:

Hey glenn - do you know anything about figuring out the model of a Gibson Acoustic? I've got a serial#
  5:35pm
jt:

three 45 minute sets? that sounds monstrous.

feedtime really affected how i learned to play both guitar and drums. overtones, harmonics, natural ring on guitar. on drums, slight shifts in timing affecting the feel of a beat that otherwise stays rock steady. still have 1st LP and Shovel on my "play along with this" drums playlist 20+ years later.
  5:36pm
Mr Donut:

Thanks, Feedtime!
  5:38pm
glenn:

not really. can gibson help? they should have a data base of serial #s, i would think. or, you could just send me the guitar, and i'll ask some questions. it might take a few years, though.
  5:39pm
kat330:

Thanks, BT and feedtime!
  5:40pm
kat330:

@Mike: Maybe "good at this" can help as s/he did me.

THANKS, Brian!!!
